Summary of the story...each man to his kettle...each studio sticking to what they know best...Disney will keep reeling in billions even if they bring out an average animation.
True. The only Studio that can match or Challenge Disney's Animations might is Universal.

They are the ONLY one who can churn out billion dollar animations asides Disney. grin

True that, Disney has been holding it down in animations for years now, i am just surprised how an average animation like Frozen 2 grossed 1.4b.
It's been long awaited since the first.

Many expected it to gross over a billion. I expected $1.2bn but surprised it toppled the first with $1.4bn.

Technically, DC competes with Marvel not Disney. And even WB (the studio that produces DC movies) can't touch Disney when it comes to animations. Disney literally built the empire they control today from animations, so go figure.
Very accurate. I couldn't have said it better. cheesy

You are telling me what i already know about DC and animation bro..they should copy Disney and prosper...WB is a big company...they can actually push thier animations with better budget, cinema runs and better marketing, some DC animations will just drop without prior notice and it will most likely slip under the radar...i for one would have actually paid my last kobo to see Batman:Under the rood in theatres...do DC even have theme parks for thier comic heroes? Abi to make money dey tire dem?
Lol, well WB tried to copy Disney decades ago after the success of The Lion King, but they failed woefully. That's why you see them mostly focused on direct-to-video released films.

The recently created Warner Animation Group— WAG(2013) has just 2 hits(LEGO MOVIE and LEGO Batman movie) in about six movies(theater release) and the latest was an epic disappointment— LEGO MOVIE 2.

I think WB is just sticking to what they know they do Best. The last DC animation theater release was a flop— Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Since then they've stuck to DVD/streaming.

How many studios you've seen tried Superhero Animation in Theaters? The one I can remember recently is Sony's Into The Spiderverse with such huge budget($90mn) and modest box office success. It's high risk genre or business if you ain't Disney or Universal, that's why you don't see other Studios put up much challenge to these TWO.

Although WAG is becoming more ambitious with it's future projects— Space Jam 2, Scoob! Tom and Jerry and Dr Seuss's properties.

And yes, WB do have DC themed THEME PARKS.

This slipped under the radar and still managed to gross 1.4 billion dolls...DC might make better animations but forget Disney have a firm grip on Box office success magic...these lot can market an average flick into a money spinning ball.
Frozen 2 was always meant to gross over a billion. And it had intense marketing and nice release date.

DC don't make animations for theatres. They are solely meant for direct-to-DVD or streaming platforms or Digital. And their production budget are far lesser than Disney's.

Besides DC animations are Adult Oriented. Also different Genre.

and this is what i wrote this morning...

note the emphasis on "potential".

it means a studio primary aim aim is to turn out a huge profit that can finance a sequel if need be, although a sequel is not a guarantee.

the truth is every medium to high budget film aims to make enough profit just so they can have the luxury to have options.

a high grossing film has a higher chance of making a sequel than a low grossing film.
True, let's agree to disagree.

See wetin Birds of Prey cos, for 2 whole days na box office calculations and permutations, like say na how Naija go take qualify for World Cup. Lol grin grin

Birds of prey is a flop and I predicted it well.

After one week, it is resting on 85 million. Its initial budget is 84 million. I doubt it will reach 200 million after one month. Damn

Sonic is expected to run past birds of prey.
Yea we'll see at the end.

DandeNumeruno:
i want to correct this misconception of yours.

have you ever wondered why high grossing films always seems to have sequels?

read this article below and maybe you'll learn a thing or two.

https://www.thestar.com.my/lifestyle/entertainment/2016/06/02/why-are-there-so-many-movie-sequels
You are the one misunderstanding me.

The article you posted doesn't contradict mine. Those sequels mentioned was only greenlit after the Massive success from the Original not necessarily actively planned.

Few of them were planned with sequels in mind. The majority was only greenlit cos the Original's money was too sweet to reject. Which I stated in my initial post.

If you reread my post you'll see where I said if a movie is a massive HIT a Studio can decide if it wants a sequel or not. That's also dependent on the Studio's greed or want for quick/easy money.

For example, Joker could get a Sequel cos of its massive profits not because it was planned. It was a one-off.
TV/MoviesRe: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by IngeniousLeez: 7:58pm On Feb 13, 2020
grandstar:
The general rule is a film makes profit if it achieves revenues that are 3 times production cost. I'm sure Birds of Prey is therefore already profitable.

I've not seen it but I suspect it may become a video game which is another big source of money. What of toy figures etc?
Na so my brother.

Everybody has invented his or her own box office statistics to suit his/her own narrative.

When the general rule of thumb is very CLEAR. Make 3x your budget and you're good to go. If you make more than that SWEETER for you.

Nope it can't spun it's own gaming franchise. Highest the movie characters port to another existing Game IP. It can go to any of the franchise WB has from MK 11, Injustice, to Batman and Superman. Etc.
TV/MoviesRe: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by IngeniousLeez: 7:19pm On Feb 13, 2020
DandeNumeruno:
BIRDS OF PREY has a production budget of 84 million not 97.

i)to break even and turn a profit, you multiply the 84 with 3.5. the result >>>294 million.this means a profit of 44 million. not enough profit to finance the production budget of a sequel. the extra profit from DVD sales and streaming won't be enough.

ii) to turn a profit, you multiply 84 with 6, the result>>> 504 million. this means the studio has earned enough to finance a sequel without touching the profits from the DVD sales, streaming etc.

allow me to use KNIVES OUT to further buttress my assertions.

KNIVES OUT on a mid budget budget of 40 million broke even at 120 million, and made bank at 300 million. 40 x 6 = 240 millions. you know what this means right?

it means KNIVES OUT has outperformed. it's a resounding box office success at 300 million with only a mid production budget of 40 million.
Using another movie box office success to compare another Is a different ball game entirely as a movie's success can be different from another.
For example if a movie grosses about 10x it's budget and another make 5x its budget doesn't necessarily take away the success of the lesser successful one.
So stop comparing A to B as budgets, genre, target audience, release date/season (summer, winter, spring, autumn) cast etc. makes each one unique in it's own way. It's more or less comparing Apples to Oranges.

A movie is primarily made to make profit not start sequels. What you are saying only applies if it was meant to kickstart a franchise. Because in the first instance where do they get the money to make such films— from prequels or what?? cheesy

Some movies are made not with a sequel in mind. Some movies are meant to be one-offs, so depending on the success of the film like 10x-20x it's production budget may warrant a sequel depending on the studio's ambitions or plans.
Joker was primarily meant to be a one-off no matter it's gross.

The point is : WAS IT SUCCESSFUL OR NOT.

DandeNumeruno:
didn't know that BIRDS OF PREY was a medium budget, thanks for the correction.
but it doesn't matter. the same rule applies to both high budget and medium budget films.
What you fail to understand in mekaprime's explanation is that Birds of Prey or Shazam is essentially a low budget movie for a Superhero Movie.

In general film terms it's medium budget but Superhero genre it's different.

An average Superhero Movie budget is about $120mn at least for the past decade. Anything from $100mn down below is considered low budget. Mid budget is from $121-180mn. Then high or massive budget is from $181-250mn and above.

Anytime when a DC film hits theatres struggling, Suddenly everyone is a Box Office guru. So the GURUS pls tell me and expatiate the success levels or difference between these scenarios. "Cos I'm not understanding".

@Dandenumeruno, Koicereloaded, Mekaprime, Armadeo JeromeBlack Urahara etc.

If we all Agreed $500mn is the profit point of Birds of Prey at production budget of $84mn. That's 5.95x it's production. Right. Kindly explain this then.—>

Doctor Strange grossed $677mn in the box office and was produced for $165mn, that's about 4.1x its budget. And it was deemed a very successful HIT. THEN EXPLAIN PLS how does B.O.P need 5.95x it's own budget which is half of Strange's to be profitable. undecided

What of Ant-Man with a $130mn production budget and final gross of $519mn. That's 3.99/4x it's budget. It was DEEMED financial success. Then how come does Birds of Prey need a similar gross when it far significantly cost less to produce?? huh

Or suddenly box office calculations has changed which I'm not aware of.

All I see is Cherry Picking and nitpicking on what's favorable to one's argument. undecided

A&T must be regretting acquiring WB by now.

the studio has been nothing but a sinkhole since acquisition lol.
Guy u funny DIE. You think with such massive undertaken or acquisition they'll start gaining profit within 2-3yrs.
So tell me how has Disney's Fox acquisition been going. Really smooth Right? cheesy

In case you don't know WB has brands they could run to: Games, Merchandise, Comics, Theme Parks etc. DVD sales could still boost profitability after theatre run.
Only WB Montreal (Game devt department)alone sef will cover those loses. You hear of MK 11 ?
Or the Incoming New Batman and Superman Games (Rocksteady) those ones alone will amass over $1.5bn with their exclusive deals. Even old Injustice game still brings the bucks.

You know how many IP franchise WB has that could spin money in the future. Harry Potter, LoTR, Matrix etc.
Even topping HBO and CW with that is a steal for the TV department. AT&T got plans mate with HBO Max giving their woeful Streaming platform a huge boost.

Seems WB has been recouping their losses somehow, cos these Flops and underperformers year round would have warranted some high profile sack since. grin Expecting some movement in the next 3-4months.

KoiceReloaded:
There's multiple tiers of box office runs;

- Profitable box office run.: Typically requires a box office of 5x-6x production budget. This is what studios are aiming for.

- Semi-Profitable: Gross is typically in the 2.5x-3.5x production budget range. Sequels tend to happen in this range, but studio will need to rely on ancillaries to cover the marketing expenses. This isn't what studios hope for.

- Non-Profitable: The film recouped its production budget and marketing expense (broke even), but unable to generate a profit, even with ancillaries.

- Typical bomb: Unable to break even.

Shazam falls within the 2nd tier. It wasn't exactly a success story but successful enough to pursue a sequel. The studio is disappointed, but not enough to cancel future plans.

BoP is in the 4th tier.
Okay, I agree with this one.

But Birds of Prey ain't flop status yet until after a Month. It could still gain LEGS. I don't see Sonic troubling too much if it holds well against it this weekend.

WB will owe a lot of people for sure because there is no way it will break even at this stage.

but come o, for a while now. WB has been on a string of box office bombs.

RICHARD JEWELL, DOCTOR SLEEP & THE GOLDFINCH all bombed abysmally.

BIRDS OF PREY bombing makes it a quadruple of bombs on a stretch lol.
WB needs to sack at least half of their marketing team, with the strings of underperformers and flops all through 2019 from start to finish. Only Joker was it's saving Grace. That's why they marketed the hell out of it before premiere.

That jinx seems to follow up till this year. WB must be the biggest loser last year with all those epic fvvk ups.

From Godzilla, to Detective Pikachu, Doctor Sleep, LEGO MOVIE 2, The Kitchen. Heads need to roll.

Birds of Prey is not a FLOP. How would you give a movie flop status in its first weekend when it almost makes back it's movie budget in opening weekend worldwide?
Yes, disappointing. But flop, no. It still even has time to make some more money as this whole month got far weaker slate of films.

It's only competition is Sonic indirectly a family movie. If it holds up well to Sonic this weekend then it might break even or even make profit.
