I was there today. My former high school is close to the Brooklyn Heights so I pretty much hang out there a lot. I have some friends that live around there.

CelebritiesRe: Fallout: Beyonce Under Fire For Blackface Photos. by InkedNerd(f): 6:34pm On Feb 26, 2011
AngieFan:
The photographer has already said it was Beyonce's idea. He said that she 'voluntarily' opted to use the paint. In any case Beyonce is an A'lister with enough money to buy that magazine 100 times over if she wanted to and she has enough clout to tell them to piss off if she wanted to. It was not like the shoot was for 'Vogue who hardly use black models anyway.

To all:

If you don't understand why certain groups of black people find these images offensive then perhaps it would be wise to keep mute on the issue instead. Racism is still very much a big issue in Black America and one of their own to voluntarily adopting an image that was significantly used to degrade black people less than 70 years ago has opened a wound that is yet to heal.
Oh ok. I was unaware of the part about the photographer. Thanks for sharing. And yes, racism is still very much alive and well here in the US. I think because people outside of the US see certain images on tv, they assume that all is well over here. Not too long ago, I was at a Russian neighborhood with a male friend of mine and we were being affectionate with one another and I got a dirty look from a young Russian couple that was walking by. The scars of racism are still very fresh within American society. Some people may look at it and say "Move on" or "That was a long time ago" but that just not the case. Its a very touching subject both for African Americans and African living in America [especially for those Africans who have grown up or lived in the US for a long time].

Ummm, for your sake I hope what you just said was a joke undecided. R.ape is about power not sex and its a violation of any man or woman. And fyi, men do get r.aped as well both by men and women [yes, its possible for a man to be r.aped by a woman].
Nairaland GeneralRe: Your Assessment The Past Two Month by InkedNerd(f): 6:19pm On Feb 26, 2011
Yes, I have sat down an assessed the past two months and I have come to the conclusion that I need to make major changes in my life cry. Emotionally, I've been through hell and back [within the last two months] and I really need to make myself a better person. That is my goal for this year and the rest of my life.

I understand  wink

but you never know after having one or two kids you might just go one size up and find it even more comfortable
lol, you're right. It might happen but I'm hoping and praying it doesn't. I wanna look like my grandmother when I'm really old. The woman has had 4 kids and her legs are still toned!!! I'm a gym rat/health freak [in a good way] so there is no way I will purposely let myself slip grin.

like what? too fat, too slim, too pear shaped, too thick? what exactly would you feel uncomfortable with after 4-5 kids at at 30+ and she has never been a skinny person so i don't think she's let herself go very far
I'm not trying to bash her--I'm a slim girl so for me to imagine myself at her size, it would be bit too much for me. Yes, for a woman who has had 3 kids she looks ok. I've seen women who are younger than her and have had only one child and look horrible. I don't think she too fat and I definitely don't think she's slim. Its just not not how my body is so I would be uncomfortable. I've always been a slim/athletic girl so I hope this clarifies why I made my previous comment.

Tunmi:
The first picture honors Fela more than the second one. The entire thing just reeked of disgust.
1. The blackface was unnecessary. There are Nigerians lighter than and the same complexion as Beyonce.
2. The make-up is horrible. Could they not get someone from the set of Fela! the musical. Where is the color, the life?
3. The outfits are horrible. What's with the leopard print? (which was made by her mother no less)

It begs the question? Was this just to promote her mother's business or to promote something else because it is an insult really.
Hmmm, good point

Weirdest shiyyt, I met a Ex at the subway today. 12 million plus folks and  I RUN into this chic. I didnt even know that it was her until I sat next to her (and she tapped me on the shoulders) that it was her. She probably thought I'd be mean to her if we ever met again.Me, I'm naturally friendly and funny so I guess my attitude (talking and yapping away like I had seen a friend I hadnt seen, and had been eagerly awaiting to see, in 10billion years) threw her off. . . . she called me lata talking bout "Even though I was mean to u b4 we broke up your easy attitude when we met again (today) had me happy and feeling bad at the same time".

Wateva! CAN I hit it again?!  grin[/quote]Smh, all you have is sex for brains.

You guys realize that there are other pictures apart from the painted face? Since speculations seem to be the other of the day I can as well join in, In order to show the different shades of Africa colors, maybe she was showing the different african shades ranging from light to dark, that is why in some pictures she was light skinned and the other was dark. shocked

Rubbish!!!
She wasn't showing off any different colors. With all honestly, some people are up in arms about it because they feel that given the fact that its Black History month it was especially offensive. Some people feel that as a light skinned woman she was being absentminded to the issues and struggles of people of a darker shade.

@Everyone: For those of you who don't live in the US or are unfamiliar with African American history, for someone to paint their face in blackface is highly offensive. Blackface is a style of theatrical makeup that originated in the United States, used to affect the countenance of an iconic, racist, American archetype, that of the darky or coon. Its basically used as a theatrical means to portray Black people in a negative manner. A lot of you seem to be forgetting that she is not the photographer or creative director behind this shoot. I'm not saying that it means that she doesn't have enough sense to say something just because its someone else's "artistic vision" but a lot of people are speaking about it as though she came up with the idea for the photo shoot. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if she could care less if it was offensive to Black people. After all, we're talking about a woman who once did a photo shoot with a company that is known for their racist marketing practices and ads.
