Ok, if you wanna believe that then so be it. By the way, I've even heard of transgendered relationships in Nigeian culture. When I find the link, I'll come back and post it.
RomanceRe: What Does A Ring Really Mean? by InkedNerd(f): 4:49pm On Jun 02, 2011
@OP: All a ring means is that I have a piece of [probably expensive grin] mental on my finger. Nothing more. In my opinion, it's a waste of money. Just be a good husband/partner, that's all I ask. I could care less if my significant other bought me a ring--I barely like jewelry anyway.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Why Email & Phone Numbers? by InkedNerd(f): 3:44pm On Jun 02, 2011
Ooops, sorry. What I actually meant to say was casual sex, not booty call. Its just that booty call was the only word that came to mind when I typed my first comment. A booty call is late night summons often made via telephone to arrange clandestine sexual liaisons on an ad hoc basis.
i.e. The student's mother was ignorant of her son's booty calls >>> http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=booty%20call

lakal:
It's funny when people say something is or is not part of the culture. Are you the authority on what is or is not asa yoruba?

I have seen elderly Yoruba women (my great-aunt) with tattoos (a giant snake or something on the back, but I only saw part of it obviously, covered by wrappa). I never asked what the significance was, but it looked like a old-time religious tattoo, even though she is now a very staunch Christian.
lol oh so you haven't noticed that certain people like to pick and choose what is part of ones culture and what isn't. Welcome to nairaland lol grin

For more info you can check out these books:
"One More River to Cross" by Keith Boykin
"Brother to Brother" an anthology edited by Essex Hemphill
"Male Daughters and Female Husbands" by Ifi Amadiume
"The Alyson Almanac" by Alyson Publications
"Lesbian Lists" by Dell Richards
"Out In The World: Gay and Lesbian Life From Buenos Aires to Bangkok" by Neil Miller
"Postcolonial, Queer: Theoretical Intersections" by John Charles Hawley
"Encyclopedia of African literature" by Simon Gikandi
"Boy-Wives and Female-Husbands: Studies in African Homosexualities" by Stephen O. Murray
"African Intimacies: Race, Homosexuality, and Globalization" by Neville Hoad
"Homosexuality and religion: an encyclopedia" by Jeffrey S. Siker
"The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Volumes 1-3" by Edward Gibbon [there is mention of homosexual practices within African and non-African cultures in this book]
"Hungochani: The History Of A Dissident Sexuality In Southern Africa" by Marc Epprecht

Some of these books are not directly on the subject of homosexualiy in Africa but its still info if you wanna check it out. Some are also on homosexuality before and after colonialism. There is even evidence of transgenderism in pre-colonial Africa among traditional African religions. Just thought I'd mention it. There are tons of other books out there, its just a matter of looking for them. Even in other non-African cultures, there is still evidence of homosexuality. With certain tribes in pre-colonial Burkina Faso and South Africa, lesbians were regarded as astrologers and traditional healers. In some areas of pre-colonial Africa, a number of tribal groups in Cameroon and Gabon believed homosexuality had a medicinal effect on a person. In pre-colonial Benin, homosexuality was viewed as a boyhood phase that males passed through and eventually grew out of. Please take into consideration that the pre-colonial African concept of homosexuality is not necessarily the same as that of the Europeans when they first came to Africa--there is a difference between the two concepts and how they were viewed both in pre-colonial and post colonial Africa. There same goes for other non-African cultures [excluding Europe]. There are loads of information out there. If you'd seek it rather than just write it off as the white man's habit then perhaps you'd see that it actually did exist.

[quote author=Shy-One link=topic=674064.msg8380729#msg8380729 date=1306204132]@ Poster

Language regardless of where it originates is ONLY a form of communication.

When your mate - male or female - starts pulling that Foreign Language BS - just start making up words that he/she doesn't understand either and vomit those words at him/her.

That's what I would do.  My guy is Yoruba - if he and I have a disagreement and if he EVER starts speaking Yoruba intentionally after a disagreement (which to this date he has never done) - if he EVER does it - I will give him back what he gives me.

I find that if a mate starts speaking a foreign language and won't translate it - 9 times out of 10 it is negative and they are A COWARD.

So start making up words and adding it to half words that they know what it means and SPIT IT AT THEM.  Show them that ANYBODY, ANYWHERE ON THE PLANET can do the same thing.  That foreign language crap means nothing.  They ain't slick.  It's done in a manner to hurt you and it's done in a tone of pure disrespect.  It's irrelevant what it means - THE INTENT is the only relevancy.

So to wind the long story short - POSTER SPIT SOME SHYT back at his IGNORANT a.zz.  Then dust your feet and walk away.[/quote]Hmmm, interesting. I never thought of it in that manner. Personally, I've never experienced what the OP has but I don't necessarily think I would call the person a coward. I guess its because I'm fascinated by languages. When it comes to situations like that, I keep in mind something very important that my father once told me which was one must keep in mind that language is no man's monopoly. lol, unfortunately, he learned that the hard way which I find funny since he seems to like immersing himself in different languages. I remember having a conversation with one of my former professors and she pointed out language isn't just a means of communication--it's also a means of exclusion.

flawed thinking. It's just like provocative dressing (brea.st and bu.m exposure); we most definitely would want to screw a flirty chick if the chance presented itself and we could get away with it; but most definitely won't be wifing/marrying her as it's not the image we want of our spouse.
