Nairaland GeneralRe: What's Your Opinion About The Left Hand? by IOMN(f): 2:31pm On May 17, 2013
I'm left handed. My parents tried to force me to be right handed for a little bit when I was younger, but I couldn't do it. So, they just let me be. My parents would just remind me that when guests were around to hand them things with the right hand.

naptu2: Please check the other thread. You'll see tonnes of evidence of affordable housing, employment programmes, etc. I didn't want to keep reposting, but maybe I'll have to. Please check the other thread. We've thoroughly thrashed this issue (and I still have more to post). Come one, come all to this thread https://www.nairaland.com/1280369/why-eko-atlantic-legal-makoko

Come find out about Lagos HOMS, the YES programme, the destitute's home, LASMI, the urban regeneration programmes, the skills acquisition centres, Katyeri Market and many more (Mapet has promised to make his contributions today).
Cool. I will definitely review. I'm very curious to know what the plans are and the progress towards them.

naptu2: http://www.businessdayonline.com/NG/index.php/news/latest/41677-fashola-explains-current-government-intervention-in-makoko
Not in a single statement did he mention the creation of AFFORDABLE housing and AFFORDABLE communities. If people from Makoko village were offered a viable alternative to living on the water, most would take it and then it would not be seen as a move for the mass eviction of people from the area. There are plenty of people from fishing villages all around the world that do not actually live on the water. Also, Fashola is attempting to just be strategic and keep tensions low amongst the people in Makoko, which is why he was so careful with his words. It's an attack on the poor. There are scores of community development professionals teaming to create viable and sustainable solutions to Nigeria's social problems, which include initiatives geared towards poorer people, but let's face it, the poor is not his focus. He is only preoccupied with displacing these people because that is the easiest and most immediate thing he can do.
EducationRe: 2013 JAMB Poor Result: What Caused It? by IOMN(f): 12:31pm On May 06, 2013
Tony Spike: Gosh, too much of badly-written English on this thread. This is more worrisome than the topic of this thread.

The truth is that high school students all over the world are becoming lazier by the year. This syndrome isn't limited to Nigeria alone, the social distractions (and temptations) are too numerous to ignore. Evidently, I believe bulk of the blame should be apportioned to the candidates, many of whom are obscurely unperturbed about their future. Instead of them to study hard, they would rather search endlessly for shortcuts to success. Well, as a matter-of-fact, I attempted JAMB exams thrice myself in time past, so failing JAMB exams shouldn't be the end of the world.
The bad English gives me a headache sometimes.
PoliticsRe: Lagos To Demolish Makoko Floating School by IOMN(f): 8:02am On May 06, 2013
I can't help but think that the appropriate people didn't get their "kickbacks" so they decided to deem the school a violation of building code or the government feels this new approach to construction on water implies the permanency of Makoko village in the area. Either way, I think it's reckless to make such a decision to not approve the structure without providing a reasonable alternative. Children need access to education to minimize the likelihood they'll become miscreants. Let them have the school. angry angry

I think the government forgets that children are the future and the opportunities that are provided to them today will affect the future of Nigeria.
RomanceRe: Describe The Person You Would Never Date by IOMN(f): 8:09pm On May 04, 2013
My biggest pet peeve is an insecure male, especially because I am so easy going. I guess I am one of the few women who would like someone to present themselves as themselves. If you try to be someone you are not, then that is the easiest way to piss me off because it amounts to wasted time for the both of us. If you are not the smartest, then don't try to come off as an intellectual. If you aren't some fashion guru, don't try to pass off your look as gucci. Stop it!

You can only put on airs for so long anyways.
PoliticsRe: FG Rejects Lagos’ Offer For Power Distribution Companies by IOMN(f): 9:55pm On Apr 25, 2013
Reference: Are you talking about micro or macro generation scales because the only advatage solar power has is scale (you can generate any amount of power you wish). The downsides are just too many. If it was that attractive carbon-fuels, nuclear and other renewables will have gone extinct by now.
I understand your perspective, but I would actually have to somewhat disagree. I think it more so has to deal with lack of knowledge and familiarity. Purchasing the raw materials for the solar panels or even the solar panels themselves is cost effective in a country like Nigeria because of the lack of access in the first place and over time the installation would more than pay for itself. Solar energy implementation is becoming more and more affordable everyday. On a micro scale, you could technically construct a solar panel energy system yourself, but I doubt how many people would want to bother with that and user error is a problem; however, it would foster greater community responsibility on power generation. On a macro scale, it is by no means impossible if you standardize production, installation and upkeep, which it would be easy to train people to do. However the biggest profits are mainly gained in the initial installation phase, which is a problem for some. I think it would be great to charge people an affordable flat monthly or yearly fee and then incorporate a portion of those payments into some community social responsibility initiative.

Anyways, I tend to be an idealist. I am speaking of these things with the absence of corruption in mind grin. One can hope and dream smiley smiley smiley

cashflowpc: The only solution to the Nigeria power problem is Solar Energy.

And

As a matter of fact, solar energy is now cheaper!
I cannot possibly understand why in the world solar energy has not been adopted. It absolutely baffles me. It seems like a complete no brainer. It would especially solve the rural access issue. The process is not as intricate as installing electrical power lines either. I think solar is roughly almost 90 percent cheaper to install. I am getting angrier just thinking about it angry. I think the only reason why there is not a widespread adoption is probably because the profit margins are considerably smaller.
RomanceRe: Why Some Ladies Remain Single For Life by IOMN(f): 9:36pm On Apr 22, 2013
These "9 Reasons Why Some Nigerian Ladies End Up Single For Life" was extraordinarily nonsensical.
As a single lady, I personally found the 9 points understandable; however, no mention of the man's role was made!
Just as women have things confused, there are many men who have things confused as well. If you are not willing to do what you are supposed to do as a man, you cannot expect a woman to address those nine considerations. If I am supposed to hold myself to this "higher" standard, then men get your shit together too.

Just because you have a penis, does not make you a man.
If you are a "man" with no self respect, no self discipline, self centered and does not consider other human beings, loose and obsessed with "conquering" women, and expects a women to do all the work and make up for your ridiculous shortcomings, then you will be a single "boy" for the rest of your life.

Men should be able to do the following upon marriage...
-Provide for yourself AND your family-- Take care of those bills!!
-Be able to be the head of the household--Aspire to lead your future family as a Christian man with love, compassion and understanding. If you are not a loving man, then do not expect love and respect in return.
-A man is supposed to lead the teaching and disciplining of the children and be strong in spirit.- The man sets the tone for disciplining. If you are undisciplined, expect your children to be the same way.

Or if you are lucky some desperate women will marry you and you will be the terrible husband that blames a woman for all your household's problems. angry

Christianity EtcRe: If Someone Slaps You Would You Turn The Other Cheek. by IOMN(f): 11:38pm On Apr 21, 2013
I'm going to address this from a historical perspective....
From my understanding, during the time of Jesus, slaps were handed out using the back hand to basically humiliate lower class persons. Individuals used the right hand to slap because using the left hand was completely out of the question (the left hand was used for "unclean" purposes); therefore, the slap landed on the right cheek. Turning your right cheek to reveal your left cheek was a way to prevent the person from hitting you again and somewhat demand respect from the person. Open hand slaps were uncommon because they held a different meaning than dislike for a person.

My personal perspective:
It depends on the motive of the slap and the age of the slapper. I most likely would have chased him down, grabbed him and just scared him with threats so he doesn't do something like that again.
PoliticsRe: 10 Most Developed States In Nigeria: What Do You Think? by IOMN(f): 8:25am On Apr 21, 2013
Vision2017: Delta shouldn't make the list. Truth be told, there are only 2 major cities in Delta and these are Asaba the state capital and Warri. Other glorified towns cum cities are only but a mere shadow of what a city should be. Delta is mostly beclouded by thick bushes and forest virtually everywhere. Nothing is happening in Delta and I can't help but wonder why Delta made your list of the most developed state in Nigeria. Delta remains a dungeon where wild animals thrives
I am neutral on this topic, but you just made me crack my ribs with your comment. lol cheesy

cap28: the goodjoehunt - has it occurred to you that your govt may be responsible for these incidents in order to force the american public to accept the repeal of the second amendment which permits all americans to bear arms. I mean it makes sense - create terror, blame it on foreigners resident in america and then come forward with a solution - confiscation of all weapons belonging to anyone resident in the US.
Historically, roughly half of Americans have always been in favor of gun control. The recent gun control bill was supported by most Americans. Also, confiscation of all weapons would never fly. The main point of the bill was the extent of the background check. The second amendment would still stand. It only failed by 6 votes in the senate-- It was pure politics. The issue is the National Rifle Association (NRA) sees this as their turf. They give a lot of money to political candidates (they are practically the reason some politicians were elected), and they did not "initiate" this bill. You don't bite the hand that feeds you and for many senators, the NRA is that hand.
TravelRe: How Long Does It Take To Get A Job In The US by IOMN(f): 2:49am On Apr 21, 2013
Allohrandy: @ poster, Life is not easy for Greencard resident in America and it is worse for an illegal or overstay Immigrant in America.. things are really difficult in American and it will be almost impossible to get a good job without having the green-card unless you wanna be involve in illicit businesses like selling drugs or 419..The only jobs you can get is menial jobs and you wont be able to pay your bills, rent or save money with menial jobs .you cant even apply for a bank account or a drivers licenses without your paper .. Without having the right documents, The US of A is a really cold place to live in for a Nigerian because nobody is going to offer help you. I know of a Nigeria in LA that also came in with a visitor visa and the only job he could find is a waiter job in a Restaurant, he doesn't get paid by the owner of the restaurant and he only depend on tips from the customers.. So I think its better you stay in Nigeria and get your green card before coming down to the States.. its far better to live in Nigeria than to live in America as an illegal or overstay immigrant
I agree. Being an illegal immigrant will be hell in the USA, especially since you have career aspirations in mind already. It would feel terrible waiting tables in the U.S. knowing that you have IT skills. Also, this is a terrible time to come to the U.S., unless your visa will permit you to work or you find a job where your workplace will sponsor your stay. Immigration reform here is real, and Americans are pissed off at immigrants. They are imposing fines on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services E-Verify system also makes it much easier to pinpoint who is legal to work in the U.S. So,chancing it is risky, and once you get deported don't even think about seeing the U.S. again.

Also, what part of the USA are you looking to relocate to and what kind of job are you looking to secure? The city and state you settle in makes a difference
