this is the explanation from CIC for FSWP. i know FSWP's been phased out but i think it provides an insight into this Bachelors degree thing we got on our WES ECA.

(Maximum 25 points)

You can earn selection points for your education.

To get points, you must:

prove that you earned a Canadian diploma or certificate, OR
have your foreign education assessed by an agency approved by CIC to show it is valid and equal to a completed Canadian credential.Footnote 2

You must include your Canadian credential or your foreign credential and Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report when you apply.
Education Maximum 25 points
University degree at the Doctoral (PhD) level or equalFootnote 2 25 points
University degree at the Master’s level or equalFootnote 2 OR University level entry-to-practice professional degree (or equalFootnote 2). Occupation related to the degree must be:

NOC 2011 Skill Level A, and
licensed by a provincial regulatory body.

Note: Degree program must be in one of these fields of study: Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Podiatry, Optometry, Law, Chiropractic Medicine, or Pharmacy.
23 points
Two or more Canadian post-secondary degrees or diplomas or equalFootnote 2 (at least one must be for a program of at least three years) 22 points
Canadian post-secondary degree or diploma for a program of three years or longer, or equalFootnote 2 21 points
Canadian post-secondary degree or diploma for a two-year program, or equalFootnote 2 19 points
Canadian post-secondary degree or diploma for a one-year program, or equalFootnote 2 15 points
Canadian high school diploma, or equalFootnote 2
Travel / Re: Canadian Express Entry/federal Skilled Workers Program Connect Here by iphie25(f): 10:08pm On Apr 11, 2016
while filling out the forms, i noticed that there's nothing like professional degree. This is all i find there.

1)You must provide proof that you completed your post-secondary education. Examples of proof of education include a diploma and/or degree. Examples of post-secondary education are:

Trade/apprenticeship

Training in a specific trade, such as carpentry or auto mechanics;
Training in a profession that requires formal education but not at the university level (for example, dental technician or engineering technician); or
Training not at the university level for which a certificate/diploma is awarded.

Bachelor’s degree

ok one of the forms says this:

Diploma" means a diploma, trade certificate or apprenticeship certificate. "Degree" means a University degree.
A "professional degree" prepares a person for a certain profession. People need to be licensed to practice in the profession. The degree program must have been in: medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry, law, chiropractic medicine, or pharmacy. Examples:

First professional degree in: Medicine (Doctor of Medicine), Veterinary Medicine, or Dentistry
Doctor of Dental Surgery degree
Doctor of Medicine, Chiropractic, Optometry, Podiatry, or Veterinary Medicine degree
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree
Bachelor of Law
Juris Doctor

"Trade or technical school," sometimes called "vocational school," means a school, usually at the college level, that teaches skills needed to do a certain job or craft.

To get the correct number of points, make sure you choose the answer that best reflects your case. For example:
If you have TWO Bachelor degrees, or one bachelor AND a two year college diploma, choose" Two or more certificates, diplomas, or degrees. One must be for a program of three or more years.
If you did not earn a Canadian degree, diploma or certificate, you may need to have your foreign education assessed by an agency approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. They must show that it is valid, and equal to a completed Canadian credential.

pretty much corresponds with what i got on d doc checklist page.

This is an academic degree awarded by a college or university to those who completed an undergraduate curriculum (also called a baccalaureate). Example: a Bachelor of Arts, Science or Education.

Master’s degree

This is an academic degree awarded by a graduate school of a college or university.

Ph.D.

This is the highest university degree, usually based on at least three years of graduate studies and a thesis. Normally, you must have completed a Master’s degree before a Ph.D. can be earned.

Concentrate on the Remark, the remark wasn't written for fun, it explains better the evaluation and captures the fact that its a First Professional Degree needed to practice, which is exactly how CIC stated what can count for a professional degree. Meanwhile, haven't you heard from them yet?

I heard from CIC o.... but it was a generic reply. For WES I guess I didn't ask them d right question...so d reply led nowhere. Well I've asked them a specific question and I'm hopin to hear from them on tuesday at the latest.

Really? Does that mean that they evaluate Nigerian Law credentials as a Bachelor of Laws and not as a Bachelor's degree?

yeah they evaluate it as first professional university degree. which is better than the ambiguity that trails WES' evaluation of law degrees undecided
google detailed evaluation criteria federal republic of Nigeria IQAS, a pdf doc will show....read from page 23 i think. just that like Chima said it takes ages to complete cry . infact slowlybutsurely says it takes about a year....so its useless to try them. well i dont want to be bothered by this thing again o cheesy

I don't it matters whether they evaluate it as Bachelor of Laws or a Bachelor's degree.

The most important point here is that it is a professional degree and so the required points would apply.

Reference the definition from CIC as follows:

Master's degree, OR professional degree needed to practice in a licensed profession (For “professional degree,” the degree program must have been in: medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry, law, chiropractic medicine, or pharmacy

And yes, they are accredited by CIC.

You can get your assessment from:

Comparative Education Service – University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies
International Credential Assessment Service of Canada
World Education Services
International Qualifications Assessment Service
International Credential Evaluation Service
Medical Council of Canada (professional body for Doctors)
Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (professional body for Pharmacists)

Cheers.

Thanks Chima...pls do you know any lawyer who was successful...applying with WES' ECA?

for lawyers who would want to assess their degrees in the future, i think IQAS(if its an accredited body by cic) has a better understanding of the Nigerian Law Degree than WES.

yea. the thing is that WES 'may' evaluate an mbbs or bds or bpharm or pharmD as a bachelors degree while another evaluating body may evaluate them as professional degree.
I quite understand your dilemma. I notice that the entry qualifications for job occupations under the NOC are an indication as to what is required to enter a career in that job field. Sometimes it does not match up with what the cic requirement to gain a point on that educational level is.
It appears to me that WES is evaluating your LLB as an equivalent 4 yrs bachelors degree in Canada (not necessarily the equivalent of a bachelors of law degree in Canada) and as an equivalent first professional degree required to practice law in Nigeria.
The issue is whether the b part of the statement is in conjunction with the first or is made as a "stand alone" and if the first professional degree required to practice law in Nigeria is same as that in Canada.
Just like WES evaluates a Nigerian nursing diploma; RN as a 3 yrs training in a hospital......which literally does not place a nurse anywhere on the CRS right now. Ideally they should fall into the "2 yrs diploma" category but since the ECA does not state that it's like a stuck in limbo phase.
Very ambiguous something. You would definitely want to clear this up to avoid an allegation of "misrepresentation" at the PR app stage. However you should not be worried about your EEP as you have not yet responded to an ITA and up until that point you can still modify your profile if need be.

Yeah...I'll most definitely want to clear this up b4 I accept d ITA because i'll lose 15points if it's not a professional degree angry

this is why WES is not the evaluating body for mbbs. The MCC evaluates a Nigerian mbbs as a professional degree.

Yeah I know. The degree in question now is law degree...I was only making a comparison with what I read somewhere as regards MBBS.

What do you think about Zandora's comments below?

ok i need to ask a question. for starters is ECA meant for canadian degrees? if the answer is No then it means some of these terms refer to your home/ awarding country. i.e the first professional certificate required to practice in a given profession. they wont be expecting you to produce a canadian bar license or degree. infact if you have any of these two, you dont need to bother with WES. WES is solely for foreign degrees. thats my opinion sha, although i have sent a detailed mail to WES, hoping to send one along these lines to CIC. in time we'll surely come to know the true position. wink

Also that you have a bachelors of Law degree doesnt mean you wont take the bar preparatory course(s) and exam, the articling and application for admission into the bar too. you must still undergo all those processes before you are admitted to practice in canada, im sure cic recognizes this fact so why will they ask me to reassess a canadian degree or license. the more i think of it, the more ridiculous it'll be to ask a person with a canadian LLB and or license to reassess their qualification as that would have been done by the NCA before recommending further courses/exams to take or even asking you to go back to law school. this usually happens when you want to study in a common law jurisdiction but you studied in a civil law jurisdiction and vice versa. starting law school all over again is tantamount to saying your previous degree isnt equivalent to a recognized canadian degree in law. well Im still not a 100% percent sure but i'll continue to share my findings as i stumble upon them.
no sleep today....im nocturnal anyway cheesy cheesy cheesy

Iphie....you are right all along, I think the problem with the back and forth between our amiable Dupyshoo and Nittaj is 'English'. What is the difference between Bachelor Degree and Bachelor of Laws? They are both first degrees, nomenclature is the difference and since CIC has elaborated on how we are to read ECA report of which the requirement for those classified as professional degree is 'First Degree required to practice' which is what is required here and the Credential and ECA remarks already stated it is 'Bachelor of Law' which is 'First Professional Degree'....it shows it is to be taken as such and gets the same marks for Masters. Furthermore, the Canadian Equivalent which is what is causing controversy is to be noted that Canadian equivalent will always state whatever is assessed and is acceptable as a Degree, Diploma or Certificate, there's no ECA report that will state its Canadian Equivalent as Bachelor of Law or Masters of Law or PhD Law, it will always be Bachelor Degree or Masters Degree or Postgraduate Diploma etc, it is the Credential and Remarks that will mention the specific.

Ahhh!!! Finally I can rest. I've been so worried eh...15marks no be here and beyond d 15marks sef...I started wondering if I was going to be affected in anyway if I get ITA with my current EEP.
Thanks JesusDway wink grin

If you look at the comments after Zandora's post, you will see that I commented after that and the conclusion then was Law graduates from Nigeria can only claim Bachelor's degree.

Bachelors degree in what? This question has deepened my confusion. Again the NOC requirements for lawyers on cic's website specifically states Bachelors Degree. I even read somewhere dt MBBS is regarded as an undergraduate Bachelors degree but it's still a professional degree.

This is what the CIC website states in relation to assessing law degrees:

For Express Entry, we only accept professional degrees in these fields:

medicine,
veterinary medicine,
dentistry,
podiatry,
optometry,
law,
chiropractic medicine, or
pharmacy.

ECA assessment results for Law:

Bachelor of Laws
Juris Doctor
First professional university degree in law
First professional university degree in law, preceded by [x years] prerequisite undergraduate study

Now in order to fall into the category 'Master degree or professional degree needed to practice in a licensed profession' you have to have either a Master's degree or the professional degree. Firstly, you don't have a Master's degree. Secondly, Canada requires any foreigner working in a regulated field to take their exams before they can practice their profession in Canada, therefore you can't use your law school certificate to practice in Canada as you'll have to write a Canadian Bar exam. A Juris Doctor degree is earned by completing law school in order to practice law either in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other common law countries of which Nigeria is a part of but like I said, you can't practice law in Canada, only in Nigeria. As a result, your degree and certificate will most likely be evaluated as a Bachelor of Laws.

this was Zandora's reply to someone in 2015. i dont know if she still holds this view. it'll be nice if she can help us out here.

Please house I am sorry i intend to re-quote superchi I don't know what caused the mixed up.I am sorry hence I paste a fresh copy here.of course,i told you guys that I knew how to quote here not quite long.so don't feel offended.

You are on point bro, this attitude by our fellow countryman/woman in Canada was what forced me to pay an immigration consultant a whooping sum way back in 2013 for the April or May 4th,2014 FSWP before the launch of EE in Jan 2015 because my paddyman during my school days who migrated few years after our graduation with the help of his senior brother always refuse to help me with information on immigration each time I call or write him to inquire 1 or 2 things.

Then things were not as tight as they were now.each time I call him or write him he will ignore my call or mail and I was like gush!! why wasting my time calling or writing him.I began making enquiries until I settled with an accredited immigration consultant, signed a 5 year contract which is still binding till date.I stopped calling or writing him until after a while he called me and started pleading that i should forgive him bla bla bla.I know he knew what he was doing because i see it as just being selfish. He wouldn't want another person to succeed like him afterall I didn't contribute to his success.I have never asked to give me anything only to help me with some enquires/questions when I ask.

My consultant has being very helpful with sincere and geninue advice.I knew about this thread, how to post/reply quotes few months back,January precisely.am using it to gather more advice and tips to complement the advice my consultant offers me.I read in past posts were some people wrote that it is a waste of money to engage the services of immigration agents.is worth it if you can afford it.it is not totally wrong. They must be licenced tho or else you are on your own. They understand the system very well and how it works.Immigration laws changes every now and then because they are experts they quickly adjust to it and update you immediately. They file appeal on your behalf and pursue it to legal conclusion if anything goes wrong but you must be armed with authentic papers.Help you in your job search, take it upon themselves to make sure you get maximum exposure to employers via the strict job bank and match you with prospective employers.

However, only a fraction of few have been able to surmount the hurdle on solo effort.I stand to be corrected tho but is a fact.

I am surprise that my friend engaged the service of a known immigration lawyer to process his wife's papers last year. She joined him thereafter last sept.with the lawyer's connection and contacts she is doing a nursing course right now after her HND qualification in Mass Comm at IMT Enugu.my paddy understood the herculean task to do it that is why he opted for a lawyer paid him and he got the job done.

I want to stress further on the line I highlighted.Of the truth I tell you my consultant told me that high targets are set for people applying as singles that's just the truth.whether a woman or a man.If you must beat the CRS score as a single dude then you must be < 30,have Masters or Phd,Excellent IELTS score and other factors to favour you.

IELTS has being the bane of many even at that couples with some good IELTS score,WES ECA Report and their kids are not given stringent conditions like someone who is single.that is why your CRS shoots up the moment you provide details of your familyl status in the EE profile.

Thanks and May God see everyone through in Jesus name.

I don't quite agree with u on the single thing o...the extra scores you get for being married are already given to u if ur not married i.e if you are given 20marks for ur spouse's Ielts it is deducted from d total marks u can score, whereas if ur single the 20 marks isn't deducted. Again a lot of pple here have processed their applications themselves without an IL...but then I just got into d pool so i'd let d gurus answer.
