majesticguy: The Six Triple Eight(2024):6.9/10
This biopics tells the inspiring story of the 6888th Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit in WWII.
Good: The storyline is powerful and sheds light on an important part of history I never knew happened until now. Kerry Washington’s performance as Major Charity Adams really stands out—she brings depth and emotion to the role. The soundtrack, especially the song “The Journey” by H.E.R., fits perfectly with the film's tone and adds to the emotional weight.
Bad: While the story is strong, the dialogue sometimes feels a little overly dramatic and forced. The pacing also drags, which makes the film less engaging at times. On top of that, the production quality, including the sets and makeup, doesn’t always hit the mark and can make the film feel less convincing.
A great effort to honor history, but it’s not as well-made as other top biopics like Hidden Figures or Selma. I have not been able to bring myself to watch it ever since The Critical Drinker questioned the necessity of making a whole ass movie about postal workers in WW2 |

A woman and her very aged parents were almost burned to death in a fire started by her lunatic ex-husband, in connivance with her own blood brother (who is also the son of the same aged couple that were almost killed in the fire) , yet all some of you could talk about was her occupation in Italy.
There is something very wrong with some of you who come online to comment. Shameless, insecure a-holes |

Mynd44: We should go back to more financial things like land, shares, jewelry etc.
It can help solve the wife's financial needs but then we start having issues of dowry theft which sometimes is perpetrated by the husband himself Women cannot own lands in some cultures. That is the sad truth |
Family › Re: Bride Price And Dowry Are Not The Same Thing And Can't Be Used Interchangeably by Ishilove: 10:33am On Jan 02, 2025 |
Mynd44: Yes. Y the problem is that if we continue to do this, the practice if dowry will die and end or be limited to pots and pans.
But dowries are a financial bank for the wife against an abusive or irresponsible husband.
It also helps in cases of widows as they already have property to care for them. Culture evolves and is sometimes modified to reflect the realities of the changing times. Bank shares, like you mentioned has never been considered a dowry because from the very outset of time, items used as a woman's dowry were the local items used to run a home. The pots and pans was an integral part of the dowry because that is what she will use in the kitchen which was considered her first office. Families will need to be enlightened that dowries should no longer be limited to kitchenware but extend to other tangible and intangible assets. |

bende7t: In Nigeria context, dowry must be provided by the man as a disguise under a traditional wedding list which comprises of most of those items shown in the pictures above. While I agree with ur pride price postulation. This I know! Oga, nothing like 'Nigerian context'. What you call " Nigerian Context" is simply wrong usage of the term. |
Family › Re: Bride Price And Dowry Are Not The Same Thing And Can't Be Used Interchangeably by Ishilove: 10:25am On Jan 02, 2025 |
pocohantas: I always thought dowry is what is paid for the groom, as in India. But going by your explanation - dowry in my place is what we call IDU ULO. It is a compulsory gift from the bride's family to the bride and the standard is kitchen wares and baby items. If the bride's family has a lot of money, then you can see items like refrigerator, big gas cooker and oven...etc.
In the past my mum said they were always given sewing machines. So I guess the items are modified to meet the times.
I am surprised people are casting aspersions on Southern women because many places in Igboland practise this. I wouldn't know why it doesn't get as much noise as the marriage list. This is a woman's dowry. We also practice the same in my place, although we place more emphasis of clothes and kitchenware. |
Family › Re: Bride Price And Dowry Are Not The Same Thing And Can't Be Used Interchangeably by Ishilove: 10:22am On Jan 02, 2025 |
Mynd44: I have heard Nigerians use "bride Price" and "Dowry" interchangeably and they seem to think they are the same. People just assume the bride price is the dowry or that they mean the same thing but this is a wrong assumption.
I knew this in Social Studies when I was in Primary 5 and it shocks me when people who I think went to school around the same time (not the current era where I don't understand the curriculum) make the same mistake. Perhaps people just think because they are both possessions and gifts exchanged around the time of a wedding they mean the same but nah. They are very distinct things.
So here is the major difference
From the definition above
1. Bride Price is given to the family of the bride by the groom and/or his family and this is mostly set by the Bride's Family.
2. Dowry is the property or money given to the bride by her family when she marries and she takes these things to her marital home.
In some cultures, Dowries cannot be sold by the couple as it is wealth that passes through only the female line so only the bride's daughter can inherit them. Thats why you see where some families have jewelry that their great grandmother used and a female descendant still wears it. It can even be shares of a company etc. The error is so common, it is almost now widely accepted as meaning the same. |

cococandy: This scenario of chasing her into the woods is bringing back some memories. I think I might’ve heard of this case. Shame on him. He was busted with the elevator cam footage of he and the little girl, just before he dragged her into the woods and molested her to an inch of her life. The kid was about 13 or 14 years old, if my memory serves me right. Messed up the child badly. The American judge, when passing sentence observed that he was not remorseful. Added to that, this perv was a repeat offender. A Vietnamese Nairalander posted a newslink of an incident involving this same individual. The guy was actually smirking in the photo, even while under arrest in Vietnam for sexual assault. He somehow escaped justice, ran to the US and continued in his evil ways until his cup became full. I think after he was exposed on NL, someone on the forum reached out to the prison authorities and the phone he was using to login to NL to rant and make noise was confiscated and that was the last we heard of him. His name is something Moshood |

I can't remember what kinda help he needed from Nlders, but there were many of our resident redpillers willing to communicate with a prisoner to help him get justice in faraway America. Until a nice Nlder dug out his case file and we saw he ______ a minor. I think he smashed her skull or something in the process. So all his family abandoned him. Onegai: See, she's definitely trying to mess with you.
But legally, she has not ended the marriage.
Right now, you can legally say she abandoned the marriage because she moved out. But she can argue she only went for Christmas Holiday (because it has only been 2 weeks).
And since she told you VERBALLY the marriage is over, it means nothing. Because she can deny it later on in court. Verbal anything means nothing.
However, if you send her a MESSAGE stating anything about your lawyer, that is a legally acceptable thing that can stand in court and her lawyer can say "Odafe360 ended his marriage, yunno".
And there's no such thing as "Lawyers will send Divorce Papers to her" in Nigeria, Nigerian Marital Act requires 2 years of continuous separation before you can file a Petition in court and serve your spouse (see how Nollywood is teaching people nonsense like "divorce papers will be served" . And if she calls your bluff and says "oya make your lawyer contact me", what next, bro?
Which is why I said you should reply her on a call: "please this decision you have made, put it in writing and send it to me". Calmly. No sweat. Don't mention anything else, no lawyers.
If e sure for her, make she write am.
Hold your mind, na man you be. Don't react in anger or pride or rage, Respond in calmness.
Let's start working on you. A new, improved you
Remember, this is a process, a journey that never ends. And at the end, you will grow for the better. As long as you learn to respond, rather than react. When experienced and mature people write, the difference is always so refreshingly clear. I am learning a lot from reading your posts 👍👌 |
