There's a switch contact inside the AUX jack. You must plug in the cable into it in order to change to AUX mode.

Have you tried replacing the spark plugs? Check also the fuel pressure.

I agree that fuel consumption can be a problem.

Maybe the problem is in the transmission mounts.

I would check the fuel tank vent tubes.

It is possible if you can find shocks and springs that is compatible with the current configuration of your car's suspension.

Great info. Pushing down the bumper is a good technique to know if the shocks are still good.

AC is a sealed system so you don't have to refill it unless there's a small leak.

I know some e36 cars in the UK have an M52 engine.
