The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 31-year-old man who allegedly inflicted injuries on his housemaid for eating pieces of meat. The spokesman for the command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday that the suspect would be charged o court on today. Jinadu gave the assurance that the police would diligently prosecute the case to deter other residents of the state from maltreating their servants and violating other people’s rights. NAN learnt that the suspect was arrested and handed over to the Apapa Police Station by members of the Sagbokoji community in Apapa where he lived. The suspect, simply identified as Mr. Okpara, was said to have beaten and injured the seven-year-old girl because she allegedly stole and ate some pieces of meat from his wife’s restaurant. Reliable sources at the Apapa Police Station told NAN that the man and his wife had been maltreating the minor. The sources said that the couple used to tie the minor’s hands and beat her with wire. “The people in the community led by Mr. Davis Aderemi, Vice Chairman, Sagbokoji Youth Community, called the police station and reported that case on August 31 at about 10.30p.m. “About 50 community people came to the station for solidarity with the victim. “They claimed that, after beating the girl, she ran away from home and hid herself in a pit before she was discovered by some people who reported the case to Aderemi,” one of the sources said. The girl is currently receiving medical attention at the Apapa General Hospital. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2011/09/05/man-injures-housemaid-for-eating-meat/ |

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) said the speedy disbandment of the Presidential Election PetitionTribunal constituted by Justice Ayo Salami may have finally exposed the real reason why he (Justice Salami)was removed as the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA). Ayo-Salami In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the partysaid all other illegalities committed by the NJC and President Goodluck Jonathan in removing Justice Salamiaside, it now seems clear to everyone that he was actually eased out to pave the way for judges, whom thosebehind his removal perceive as ‘friendly’, to sit on the tribunal.”That Justice Dalhatu Adamu, Acting President of the PCA, quickly dismantled the panel, even as time isrunning out to hear the case filed by the CPC challenging the President’s election, seems to be a confirmation ofthe rumours making the rounds that President Jonathan was afraid that his election may be overturned by the oldpanel, hence he acceded to the illegal recommendation of the NJC to remove Justice Salami. ”Even if there is no sinister motive for the action by Justice Adamu in dispersing the judges sitting on the case, which is possible, his hasty action – at a time the controversy over the way Justice Salami was removed is at itspeak – is enough reason to sow the seeds of doubt over his action,” it said.ACN said the disbandment of the election petition panel now makes it difficult for anyone to believe thatenlightened self interest is not the reason why the President ignored the Constitution in aligning with therecommendation of the NJC on Justice Salami. The party said if the removal of Justice Salami and the disbanding of the tribunal is considered along with the fact thatPresident Jonathan is a party to the pending case before it (tribunal), it seems more evident than ever that the Presidentfailed to abide by the Code of Conduct for Public Officers, as contained in the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution.”Paragraph 1 of the Code states: ‘[a] public officer shall not put himself in a position where his personal interest conflictswith his duties and responsibilities’. ”This is one more reason why the President must reverse his action on the Justice Salami case today. Otherwise he would expose himself to the accusation – and rightly so – that he allowed his personal interest to dictate his conduct asthe President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” ACN said. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2011/09/06/real-reason-for-justice-salamis-removal-now-clear-says-action-congress/ |

Outstanding sportsmen and women, as well as sports administrators have been pencilled to receive the National Merit Award to be given by President Goodluck Jonathan this year. Sports Minister, Alhaji Suleiman Yusuf disclosed that at least three sports personalities would receive national awards from the federal government. Yusuf said he has forwarded the names of the expected beneficiaries to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim. He said the award was one way President Jonathan would use to motivate Nigerian youths to excel in sports. In his words: “I have told the athletes in Maputo that they too can get national awards for doing the country proud. Those we have forwarded their names for the award are accomplished ex-internationals, coaches and athletes. “We want them to be rewarded for what they have done for the country.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/sportsonthehour/2011/sept/06/sportsbreak-06-09-2011-001.html |
A family of four was yesterday found dead, in Nkwelle-Ezunaka town, Oyi Local Council Area of Anambra State, in what seems to be suffocation, due to emissions from a generating set. Mr Peter Nwoye, 46, his wife Ebele and two children, Chisom and Rapuluchukwu, who hailed from Ezinkwelle village, were last seen on Sunday night when they went to bed, but failed to come out of their four-bedroom bungalow at 7.30, Monday morning. When all efforts to gain access to their house proved abortive, their next door neighbours, forced the door open, only to see them lying with lifeless with foam coming from their mouths. According to Peter’s immediate elder sister, Mrs Theresa Umeagwu, the family had slept with the 6 .5 KVA generator, which was put in one of the rooms, which the neighbours heard worked till the next morning. “I rushed here from my husband’s place when they told me my brother and his family was found dead this morning. I was told that their big generator continued working until this morning when it stopped on its own. I came in to see the whole family wiped out, and was told it was because, the generator was on,” Mrs. Umeagwu said. But Daily Sun investigation gathered that the family usually chained the power generating set at the back of the house. An electrician, who identified himself as Oduche Nnagbo said, he did the wiring job for the family, and had on many occasions witnessed them making use of the set from outside the house, and wondered what could have pushed them to drag in the heavy generator that fateful night. In his words, “I am the one who handled the wiring for the generator. I have always known it to work from outside the house. So, I’m surprised to hear that they slept with it yester night. I even heard the police have taken the generator away.” When the Anambra state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Emeka Chukwuemeka was contacted, he said that it was not yet clear what befell the family, but that the generating set and their vomit was taken as exhibit, so as to discover the true cause of their death. https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?action=post;board=9.0 |
State House Correspondent Vincent Ikuomola takes a look at the activities of President Goodluck Jonathan in the first 100 days. He submits that not much has changed around the power house despite the transformation agenda. How much can a political office holder achieve within the first 100 days in office? This is a recurring question. But for many, the take off always has a way of determining the level of delivery. This explains why many want to assess President Goodluck Jonathan’s first 100 days in office as a preview of the remaining 1,350 days. The days since May 29 have been eventful. The circumstances of his emergence, with the division that the pre and post-election period occasioned called for concerted efforts to rescue the country. Many saw his emergence as a “fresh air” in Nigerian politics, but the recent happenings in the country have quietly dampened the euphoria that greeted his election. Serious challenges in bringing on board men and women who could elicit confidence in the administration and curtailing the rising wave of insecurity soon emerged. Before the oath taking ceremony, President Jonathan promised to hit the ground running. He even took time off to relax at the popular Obudu Ranch Mountain Resort where many believed he went to prepare his team list, which did not come until after a month in office. And so, in the first 30 days, the president operated without a cabinet in place. Reacting to worries expressed by the people about the inability of the government to take proper shape in more than three months, the President enjoined the citizenry to wait till middle of next year as the administration just took off. According to him, “what I request for is that by middle of next year we will meet again, but this time around to compare notes whether we are on the right track.” He also said his main “concern is how do we do things differently, that is why we are working and we have constituted the economic team and we are coming out with different things, even in the ministries, because we must do things differently.” One area that the government has promised to record progress in very short period is in turning around the economic fortunes. The first step towards this was in getting the Managing Director of the World Bank Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to return to the Finance Ministry as Minister and coordinator of the economic efforts of the administration. Official statistics which is not always reliable indicate that there has been some level of improvement as the Foreign Reserves reportedly rose by 10 per cent to $34 billion, while the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was said to have grown month over month from 6.7 per cent in May to 6.9 per cent in July. The growth recorded in the economy is believed to have given the country a slot among the top three investment destinations of choice in Africa in a survey by the independent Africa Business Panel in The Netherlands. Also, as part of efforts to improve power generation and supply in the country, the President approved the pioneer board for the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading (NEBT) Plc. Besides, some major action steps were taken in the power sector, like the removal of heads of generation plants in the country and the approval of N19 billion to pave way for some of the power projects springing up in the country. Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority was also set up to facilitate direct investments into infrastructure with the priority areas being Power and Roads. Road projects The Jonathan administration approved funds for the rehabilitation of the East – West road in order to facilitate transportation of goods and services around the country. The Federal Government also awarded contracts for various road projects across the country whose impact will expectedly soon be felt nation-wide. Also, an enlarged National Economic Team was set up to initiate the administration’s transformation policies and another team to see to the implementation of the policies. A 12-man Justice Sector Reform Implementation Committee has been set up. He also signed into law the Freedom of Information Bill, a move that many have described as capable of lifting the veil covering governance. His countenance on the celebrated case involving the former Speaker of House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole for an alleged corrupt practice in the early days of this administration has been variously interpreted. Those sympathetic to the President say he should be praised for allowing the law take its course, while others claim he was the brain behind the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) move. However, the administration’s inability to tackle the insurgence of Boko Haram, and the recent bombing of the United Nations Abuja building, coupled with the handling of the crisis in the Judiciary have blighted the first 100days of the Federal Government. Boko Haram has become more daring each passing day. The group proved by its unprecedented bombing at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja under the nose of the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim. Not done with that and some of its activities in some states in the North, the group recently hit the United Nations, Abuja building, killing over 30 people with scores injured. Though the government said it was on the trail of those behind the dastardly act, a statement that has become a refrain since the October 1, 2010 bombing in Abuja , apart from the two arrests made, every other effort seems to be on the pages of the newspapers. Beyond lip service, the President’s commitment to rule of law and the doctrine of Separation of Powers was tested by the judicial crisis rocking the country. President Jonathan’s appointment of an acting president for the Court of Appeal has persistently and consistently attracted knocks from lawyers, human rights activists and lovers of democracy who argue that it amounted to taking sides and politically weighing in on a matter that could threaten the health of the nation. Controversy unlimited The other controversy stirred up by the president was that of the proposed single term of six years for the president and governors. To many Nigerians, the agenda was a needless distraction, especially when the administration had barely taken off. Another area where the president was scored low was in the area of timing or response to issues. Many had complained about his delayed visit to the UN building, scene of the recent Abuja bombing and Lagos and Ibadan, Oyo State following the flooding of both cities. Both incidents brought to question the decisiveness of the president on serious national matters. On the international front, the president seems to have done fairly well, especially the role he played in installing the winner of the Ivorian presidential election, Alhassan Quatara after so much effort by the incumbent president, Laurent Gbagbo to remain in power. He was among the first leaders to accept the National Transition Council in Libya, a move that was initially condemned for not been in tune with African Union, AU position. Three hundred days gone, 1,350 more to go. Is President Jonathan in position to transform Nigeria? A poser, no response yet. |

Many cases of malaria infection result from ignorance and misconception among sufferers, especially among rural community dwellers. Some common misconceptions include the belief that eating dog meat can cure malaria. Friday Okafor, from Okijaniha Local Government Area of Anambra State, who cooks and sells dog meat in Umuawo, a community in Oshimili Local Government Area of Delta State, proudly touts his conviction that eating sauce made with dog meat can cure malaria. This middle-aged man, who has been in the business since 1999, kills and prepares two dogs for sale everyday. His customers sold on his culinary abilities and their expectation that dog meat was a therapy for malaria. “Eating dog meat cooked with lemon grass, mint leave and some other spices certainly cures malaria,” said Mr Okafor. “Some of my customers come here to seek cure for their malaria. When they eat the dog meat and drink the water [sauce] on a regular basis, they get cured of their malaria. The water of dog is part of human being’s water. Dog is part of human being.” No need to ask the food vendor about the propriety of eating a close relative, then. But Mr. Okafor, who alleged that none of his four children and himself had succumbed to malaria in a very long due to regular consumption of dog meat, however did not doubt the fact that exposure to mosquito bite causes malaria, just as he believes that stagnant water could be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Umuawo itself is a densely populated community of about 250,000 people which serves as a market, a beach and a major gateway to neighbouring communities. Huge mounds of refuse and unkempt environment can be said to be a defining characteristics of this sprawling community. The only source of potable water appears to be rain water, as residents have fouled the Niger River that flows through the community and also serves as place for doing their laundry and cleaning slaughtered animals. Although a sizable number of the people of the community patronise Mr Okafor, a medical doctor who spoke on the condition that his name was not mentioned in print said there was no scientific proof to show that eating sauce made with dog meat would cure malaria. “If any relief comes to a malaria patient after drinking sauce made from dog meat, it must be the herbs like lemon grass, mint leaf and others like that are added to it,” he said. “They all contain some medicinal value.” Living with refuse A visual survey of the Umuawo area shows a pool of stagnant water close to the refuse dump, which is about 30 metres from the police station. The mammoth dump, which stretches for about 300 metres, is tucked between the popular Ogbe-Orie market and the community abattoir on the bank of the River Niger. A 75-year-old community leader, Emmanuel Nwachukwu, told NEXT that the community has made several efforts to get local and state officials to clear the refuse heap. He pointed out that the dumpsite had remained a health hazard to residents of the community, and had cost them time and money treating several bouts of malaria attacks, which in essence have resulted to economic loss. Another resident, Kingsley Ochia, decried the poor environmental condition of the community and the attitude of residents towards keeping their environment clean. He said this had increased the rapid reproduction of mosquitoes in the area. “I use ‘Ota piapia’ and mosquito coils to kill the mosquitoes,” he said. He, however, said it was regrettable that the use of this chemical has negatively affected the health of his children as they suffer frequent nasal congestion and cough. The only solace for Mr. Ochia was the local health centre at Ogbe-Orie, where he said he seeks remedy whenever his children suffer from malaria attack. Josephine Alert, a petty trader whose shop is located by the entrance to the refuse dump, said the heap has always given her a nightmare as mosquitoes and other creeping insects have almost taken over her store. She complained of incessant malaria attacks; but she is also a proud owner of two treated mosquito nets which were freely given to her during one of her frequent visits to the hospital. She said it was lamentable that the government of Delta State stopped the process of evacuation of the refuse it recently embarked upon, thereby dashing the hope of the residents for a clean environment. Investigations revealed that evacuation of the Umuawo refuse heap was suspended by the state government when the earth-moving equipment used for the evacuation was moved to the new Asaba airport. “It is our hope that Delta State government will, as a matter of urgency, evacuate the mountain of refuse at Umuawo before an epidemic of malaria and other diseases break out,” said Mr Nwachukwu. A national scourge The prevalence of malaria in Nigeria has become a major source of concern to the government, donor agencies and citizens. Of about 500 million global cases reported annually, Nigeria contributes about 134 million. This means only a tiny fragment of the population of 150 million could be said to be free from malaria attack. Studies show that children under five years of age and pregnant women are the most vulnerable group; with close to 300,000 children dying every year in Nigeria, which represents about 28 percent of total deaths associated with malaria in Africa. Similarly, about seven in 10 pregnant women in Nigeria suffer from malaria each year, while 11 percent deaths occur during pregnancy due to the disease. Worse, there is this erroneous allegation that the use of mosquito nets could lead to death. But Chioma Amaja, Director of Integrated Vector Management (IVM) of the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCPN), whose consistent campaign for the control of malaria over the years has earned her the nickname “Mama Malaria”, described such rumours as untrue and sheer mischief. A total of 35.7 million of the nets are said to have been distributed by NMCPN in 22 states between December 2009 and April 2011. Mrs. Amaja, who said a proper and regular use of nets would create a barrier between man and mosquitoes, thereby help to save lives, however cautioned against improper use of the nets, including the use of the nets for fishing. “If more people in the house use nets, they will be protected, and if more people in the community use their nets, mosquitoes will be driven away to other places,” she said. “Once you get the nets, you air it for 24 hours in a shaded place. It could be inside the room, but don’t sleep under it until after airing it for 24 hours to allow the insecticide to be expelled, after which you can now spread it over the sleeping place.” Godwin Ntadom, another official of NMCPN, described malaria as a complex and deadly disease with a new case contacted every 10 seconds and two deaths per minute. He said the burden of malaria includes negative social and economic implications, such as absenteeism from offices, farms, markets and schools; and could seriously affect tourism in Nigeria. He, however, called on Nigerians to urgently embrace anti-malaria programmes. “Because of the health burden that malaria imposes on its victims, people in non-malaria areas may not be eager to travel to the malaria-prone areas thereby inhibiting the flow of knowledge, skills and cross-fertilisation of ideas,” he said. http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5740809-146/story.csp |
