FamilyA Woman Who Disguised As A Man For 43 Years To Feed Family Is Honoured In Egypt by Itulah(op):
An Egyptian woman who disguised herself as a man for 43 years in order to make a living for her daughter after the death of her husband was honored Tuesday by the government as the “ideal mother” of Luxor governorate.

The Social Solidarity Directorate of Luxor said it was awarding the “woman breadwinner” award to Sisa Abu Daooh for her years of hard work providing for her daughter and her grandchildren.

The 64-year-old Abu Daooh lost her husband while she was pregnant and after giving birth, she found herself without an income. Her situation was complicated by a local culture opposed to women in the work place, which forced her to dress as a man and work outside the home to support her baby daughter Houda.

She worked making bricks and polishing shoes in the street among other jobs. Eventually, she married off her daughter to a man who later fell ill and couldn’t work. So, being a resourceful woman, Abu Daooh kept up her work as the breadwinner of her family.

She donned a local “jilbab” – a loose, full-length robe with wide sleeves – as well as a white turban, or sometimes a men’s hat known as a “Taqiyah” and black masculine shoes.

“I preferred working in hard labor like lifting bricks and cement bags and cleaning shoes to begging in the streets in order to earn a living for myself and for my daughter and her children,” she said.

“So as to protect myself from men and the harshness of their looks and being targeted by them due to traditions, I decided to be a man … and dressed in their clothes and worked alongside them in other villages where no one knows me. She added that she worked in an array of jobs, from “polishing shoes, to construction to agriculture.”

At the moment, Abu Daooh says she is polishing shoes, which earns her a “decent income.”

Her daughter Houda said: “my mom is the one who still provides for the family. She wakes up every day at 6 a.m. to start polishing shoes at the station in Luxor. I carry the work kits for her as she now advanced in age.”

Abu Daooh gave thanks to those who had helped her along the way.

“Thanks to everyone who has helped me. I hope to see Egypt in a better situation.

PoliticsRe: Why Buhari Wins All The Polls Online(opinion) by Itulah(m): 9:48am On Mar 17, 2015

TheLeader:
Ever wondered why Buhari wins all the online polls? Here is what I think-

I think its because the bulk of the populace that actually know what's going on in the country are the ones that have access to the internet and know how to use it, hence the overwhelming support for the opposition online. We've seen Buhari sweep polls conducted by even AIT and GEJ's aids...Surprising huh?

Why doesn't this necessarily replicate itself when it comes to the poorest of the poor?

Most...yea most Nigerians in our numerous villages that constitute the bulk of the country don't have access to the internet...or can't use it. At best they are stuck with NTA and the network news on radio...I need not state how one-sided the news here can be. Furthermore, these people(some of my friends and relatives included) are predominantly illiterates so might not have the ability to rate the Government's performance objectively, hence their inclination to vote along ethnic/religious line rather that the capability of the candidates.

...so next time you see 400 like in 3 minutes for the opposition, don't wonder if persons have multiple accounts and can switch between 50 of those accounts in 3mins just to click like...nt feasible right? well I thought so too.

These persons are just the majority of enlightened Nigerians trying to salvage whatever is left of our once great country before it is too late.

"If you try, you might fail, but if you fail to try, you've failed already".

Now you know why Buhari wins the polls online.

Health5 Health Benefits Of Smoking by Itulah(op): 5:15pm On Mar 12, 2015
Who says smoking cigarettes is so bad ... well, aside from the World Health Organization, Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and every medical board and association on the face of the Earth?

But should smokers be fortunate enough to dodge all that cancer, heart disease, emphysema and the like, they will be uniquely protected — for reasons unexplained by science — against a handful of diseases and afflictions.

Call it a silver lining in their otherwise blackened lungs. Although long-term smoking is largely a ticket to early death, here are (gulp) five possible benefits from smoking. Breathe deep.

1. Smoking lowers risk of knee-replacement surgery

While smokers might go broke buying a pack of cigarettes, they can at least save money by avoiding knee-replacement surgery. Surprising results from a new study have revealed that men who smoke had less risk of undergoing total joint replacement surgery than those who never smoked.

The study, from the University of Adelaide in Australia, appears in the July issue of the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism. What could be the connection? Knee-replacement surgery was more common among joggers and the obese; smokers rarely jog, and they are less likely to be morbidly obese.

After controlling for age, weight and exercise, the researchers were at a loss to explain the apparent, albeit slight protective effects of smoking for osteoporosis. It could be that the nicotine in tobacco helps prevent cartilage and joint deterioration.

2. Smoking lowers risk of Parkinson's disease

Numerous studies have identified the uncanny inverse relationship between smoking and Parkinson's disease. Long-term smokers are somehow protected against Parkinson's, and it's not because smokers die of other things earlier. [10 Easy Paths to Self-Destruction]

The most recent, well-conducted study was published in a March 2010 issue of the journal Neurology. Far from determining a cause for the protective effect, these researchers found that the number of years spent smoking, more so than the number of cigarettes smoked daily, mattered more for a stronger protective effect.

Harvard researchers were among the first to provide convincing evidence that smokers were less likely to develop Parkinson's. In a study published in Neurology in March 2007, these researchers found the protective effect wanes after smokers quit. And they concluded, in their special scientific way, that they didn't have a clue as to why.

3. Smoking lowers risk of obesity

Smoking — and, in particular, the nicotine in tobacco smoke — is an appetite suppressant. This has been known for centuries, dating back to indigenous cultures in America in the pre-Columbus era. Tobacco companies caught on by the 1920s and began targeting women with the lure that smoking would make them thinner.

A study published in the July 2011 issue of the journal Physiology & Behavior, in fact, is one of many stating that the inevitable weight gain upon quitting smoking is a major barrier in getting people to stop, second only to addiction.

The relationship between smoking and weight control is complex: Nicotine itself acts as both a stimulant and appetite suppressant; and the act of smoking triggers behavior modification that prompts smokers to snack less. Smoking also might make food less tasty for some smokers, further curbing appetite. As an appetite suppressant, nicotine appears to act on a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, at least in mice, as revealed in a study by Yale researchers published in the June 10, 2011, issue of the journal Science.

No respectable doctor would recommend smoking for weight control, given the toxic baggage accompanying cigarettes. This recent Yale study, however, does offer an inkling of hope for a safe diet drug to help obese people control their appetites.

4. Smoking lowers risk of death after some heart attacks

Compared with non-smokers, smokers who have had heart attacks seem to have lower mortality rates and more favorable responses to two kinds of therapy to remove plaque from their arteries: fibrinolytic therapy, which is basically medication; and angioplasty, which removes the plaque by inserting balloons or stents into the arteries.

There's a catch, though. The reason why smokers have heart attacks is that smoke scars the arteries, allowing fat and plaque to build up in the first place. So, one theory as to why smokers do better than non-smokers after such therapies is that they are younger, experiencing their first heart attack approximately 10 years before the non-smoker.

A study published in an August 2005 issue of the American Heart Journal, however, states that age alone is not enough to fully explain the survival differences and that "the smoker's paradox is alive and well." No alternative theories have been put forth since.

5. Smoking helps the heart drug clopidogrel work better

Clopidogrel is a drug used to inhibit blood clots for those patients suffering from coronary artery disease and other circulatory diseases leading to strokes and heart attacks. Smoking seems to help clopidogrel do its job better.

A study by Korean researchers in the October 2010 issue of the journal Thrombosis Research builds upon work by Harvard researchers published in 2009 that demonstrates the benefit of smoking at least 10 cigarettes a day. It seems that something in cigarette smoke activates certain proteins called cytochromes, which convert clopidogrel into a more active state.

Again, no respectable doctor is encouraging patients to start smoking to get the most out of clopidogrel. But this and the other four "benefits" of smoking reveal how tobacco — perhaps not unlike other potentially toxic plants — might contain certain chemicals of real therapeutic value.

PoliticsRe: Martin Luther Agwai's Speech At Obasanjo's Birthday That Made Him Lose His Job by Itulah(m): 4:16pm On Mar 11, 2015
skedman:
What Ex Sure-p Boss said at Obasanjo birthday that made him lose his job. The SURE-P Chairman Martin Luther Agwai was sacked todayby President Jonathan. What still baffles people is the main reason why he was sacked. Rumours had it that his being sacked was based on the speech he gave at the 78th birthday of Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo. Check out his speech below and tell us what you feel; Leadership remains one of the most relevant aspects of an organizational context, more so, that we are in a world where the security and business climate are increasingly competitive and volatile. It is probably correct to say that leadership has been a feature of all cultures throughout history. It is difficult to imagine any country where effective leadership is more important than our country, where drum of insecurity and songs of ethnic solidarity and national disintegration are going on daily, and every day can present life and death challenges. As John Maxwell stated, everything rises and fall on leadership . More than anything else, leadership will determine our success or failure, and history has continued to show us frequently the impact of leadership. It is absolutely necessary that our leaders at every level should be visionary and strategic. The world has changed and continues to do so in a very profound and disturbing way. The future is already here in the present, and for most leaders, and nations it may have come as a surprise or shock. In this new reality of chaos, uncertainty, interdependency, and opportunities, the challenges for leaders are greater and the need for a new type of skillful and competent leadership becomes more urgent. The challenges being presented to the leaders of the present and the future are greater and can be divided into 3 components -changing challenges to leadership, changing social structure and changing economic dynamics. The only constant factor in all the 3 components is Change and that is part of what (informed me to introduce the Change Management in the Nigerian Army in 2004.) is to be addressed by the leaders of today and tomorrow

PoliticsIvory Coast's Former First Lady Simone Gbagbo Jailed 20 Yrs by Itulah(op): 7:14pm On Mar 10, 2015
Ivory Coast's former first lady, Simone Gbagbo, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for her role in the violence that followed the 2010 elections.

Gbagbo, 65, had been charged with undermining state security.

Her husband, former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo, is awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

More than 3,000 people died in the violence that followed the presidential poll after the ex-leader refused to accept defeat to Alassane Ouattara.

She and her husband were arrested in 2011 after troops stormed a bunker where the pair had taken refuge in the main city, Abidjan.

And it was in the same city where Gbagbo - once called the "Iron Lady" and known for her fiery speeches - faced trial. She was also accused of disturbing public order and organising armed gangs.
'Ashamed of Ivorian justice'

She denied witness accounts that accused her of personally distributing arms to the death squads that operated in Abidjan during the five-month conflict

I know that when applying for a job, the applicant must submit his/her CV together with application letter, but i've heard a lot about "cover letter" of recent and i find it difficult to fathom out the difference of the cover letter from application letter. If they are truly different, do applicants submit both at same time together with CV? PoliticsAPC Jittery Over Victory On Boko Haram, Accuses GEJ Of “positive Propaganda” by Itulah(op): 12:15pm On Feb 27, 2015
According to a report by International Cable TV Al-
Jazeera, Nigeria’s opposition has accused President
Goodluck Jonathan of using the fight against Boko
Haram as “positive propaganda” to win votes in next
month’s election. These accusations follow the release
of a video by military commanders showing the army in
combat against the armed group. Al-Jazeera’s
correspondent Ms. Yvonne Ndege, reports:

[WATCH]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYVsfBANigM

Ayo Oyalowo of the All Progressives Comgress speaking
with the Al-Jazeera reporter concerning the release of a
video by military commanders showing the army in
combat against the armed group said;
“This video that has been released for us looks like a
joke… if we want to play games let us play games if we
want to act movies let us act movies… The government
said they have won a battle and they are showing us
aerial bombardment but why are they not taking
journalists, press people to go to the place… We see a
government that believes in propaganda in making
delusions look like reality.”
Nigeria’s leading opposition party has often been
accused of capitalizing on the onslaught against the
country by Boko Haram as a major campaign issue
against the sitting President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
and the recent victories over Boko Haram is seen to
have dealt a big blow to their campaign which assumed
high momentum as a Nigerians of the fears by many
Nigerians of the group’s amplified dominance.
Meanwhile key opposition figures have spoken to water
down the impact of the military’s victories as most
recently observed in the demand by leading BBOG
campaigner Oby Ezekwesili, that the military provide
prove of its victory. The opposition party strategists are
currently its approaches as it sees the Boko Haram
issue as its only and ultimate joker to achieve victory at
the polls.

PoliticsHouse Sets Partisan Politics Aside And Applaud Pres. GEJ On Boko Haram by Itulah(op): 7:49am On Feb 25, 2015
APC hails troops, blames president for allowing
insurgency to fester • Jonathan condemns bombings in
Kano, Potiskum • Nigeria: Israel crucial in fight against
sect Muhammad Bello, Onyebuchi Ezigbo, Jaiyeola Andrews in Abuja, Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano and Michael Olugbode in Maiduguri with agency report
Setting partisan politics aside, the House of
Representatives on Tuesday applauded President
Goodluck Jonathan and the Nigerian military for the
latter’s recent recapture of several towns and
communities that had fallen under the control of the
terror group, Boko Haram, in the North-east, particularly
Borno State.
Similarly, the All Progressives Congress (APC) showered
the same praise on the troops, but blamed Jonathan for
allowing the insurgency to fester and the resultant
deaths of 15,000 Nigerians.
But their praise coincided with the condemnation by the
president of two suicide bombings yesterday at bus
stations in Kano and Potiskum which resulted in the
death of 27 persons in both cities.
Prompted by a motion of urgent national importance
moved by Hon. Muhammad Tahir Monguno (APC,
Borno), the House praised the military for its bravery
and steadfastness, noting that in previous months, Boko
Haram had nearly over-run Borno State, but added that
the tide was turning against the insurgents as a result
of the gallantry of the soldiers.
According to Monguno, prior to the new offensive
against the terror group, Boko Haram had subdued
some communities, hoisted their flags in the local
government headquarters and subjected the people to
despicable acts of torture.
“Almost all the local governments taken over by Boko
Haram have now been liberated, so the armed forces
require some encouragement from us in the parliament,”
Monguno stated.
Arguing in the same vein, Hon. Abubakar Momoh (SDP,
Edo) also commended the effort of the military in
chasing out the insurgents. “We were aware that a few
months ago, Boko Haram unleashed a reign of terror on
many parts of the North-east. But today, this has been
curtailed,” Momoh said.
“We need to commend the military and the Commander-
in-Chief, President Jonathan, who made it possible for
the soldiers to operate effectively,” he added.
Similarly, the Deputy House Leader, Hon. Leo Ogor
(PDP, Delta), observed that the development in Borno
and other places “is a sign that the military is working”.
“It is therefore important to appreciate what they are
doing. We also need to commend other nations – Chad,
Cameroun and Niger – for assisting us in fighting this
battle.
“We need, also, to commend the Commander-in-Chief
for his bold steps in ensuring that there is security in
the beleaguered areas within six weeks (before the
elections),” Ogor said.
Also, the House shifted the consideration of a motion
sponsored by the Minority Leader, Hon. Femi
Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos), seeking to nullify, on
constitutional grounds, the use of soldiers to provide
security during elections, till today.
If Gbajabiamila’s request sails through, the House may
resolve to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the
role played by military personnel, and any other person
(s) who featured in the said audio tape saga in the run
up to Ekiti State governorship election.
It may also call on the federal government, the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the
military authorities and other stakeholders to obey the
ruling of the Federal High Court, Sokoto, which declared
that deployment of soldiers during elections is
unconstitutional.
In this regard, the House may urge the federal
government not to deploy military personnel during the
elections in compliance with the decision of the court.
But as the House commended Jonathan and the military
for the routing of Boko Haram in some sections of the
North-east, the opposition APC elected yesterday to
limit its praise to the troops.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai
Mohammed, the party said the president bears a huge
moral responsibility that would haunt him for a long
time to come for deliberately allowing the Boko Haram
insurgency to fester, leading to the deaths of over
15,000 Nigerians and the displacement of over three
million others in the past six years.
The party further alleged that Jonathan deliberately
allowed the Boko Haram crisis to fester because he and his team saw it as their trump card for winning re-election in 2015.
On the military, APC said the string of victories recorded
by the troops over the insurgents had confirmed its
stand that the Nigerian military can hold its own
anywhere and anytime, if provided with the necessary
equipment and if the morale of the troops is not
undermined.
It said by his own admission that he and his team
“underrated the capacity of Boko Haram”, the president
has finally owned up to his globally-acknowledged
incompetence, a development which, in truly democratic
societies, should be part of a statement of resignation
by a leader whose terrible error of judgment has caused
so many deaths and inflicted so much pain and sorrow
on his compatriots.
APC said: “The truth is that Jonathan deliberately
allowed the Boko Haram crisis to fester because he and
his team saw it as their trump card for winning re-
election in 2015 by currying local and global sectarian
sympathy with a Muslim-group-killing-Christians
narrative that totally distorts the fact that Boko Haram
is a band of marauders who have no consideration for
ethnicity, regionalism, religion or any other thing beyond
their mad disposition to terror.”
It recalled that the APC had raised the alarm on many
occasions, including during an appearance at the British
Parliament in 2014 when the party’s spokesman had
warned that the PDP and the president were using the
Boko Haram crisis as a trump card to retain power in
2015.
“Is it not curious that the same president who has
stood by while Boko Haram decimates a whole section
of the country over the past six years has suddenly
realised there is something he could do to crush the
sect in six weeks?
“Is it not curious that a military that has been globally
acknowledged for its successes in peacekeeping at
regional and international levels has suddenly found
itself unable to tackle a band of criminals?
“Is it not curious that the necessary fighting equipment
that have not been made available to the military,
despite the injection of over $32 billion into the defence
and security sector since 2008, have suddenly become
available?
“There are more questions to be asked: At what point
did President Jonathan begin to have a clear idea that
Boko Haram is a major threat to the very survival of our
country? Was it after about 300 innocent girls were
abducted from their school in Chibok or before?
“Was it after hundreds of boys were slaughtered in a
secondary school in Buni Yadi or before? Or was it
before or after the Nyanya bomb blast that led to the
deaths of hundreds of people? Just when did our
president wake up to his primary responsibility?
“The truth is that after their Boko Haram-as-a-trump-
card strategy blew up in their face and their electoral
fortunes plummeted, the PDP-led Jonathan
administration came to the realisation that a stepped-
up campaign against the insurgents is needed to revive
their electoral fortunes, hence they then decided to pep
up the military and rally regional troops - the same
suggestions from the opposition that the administration
has pointedly ignored over the years - to combat the
terrorists.
“President Jonathan, who is also the Commander-in-
Chief of the Armed Forces, must take responsibility for the monumental cost, whether of his incompetence or his political strategy-gone-awry or both, apologise to the nation and immediately back down from seeking re-election.
“The president must not be allowed to profit from an
error of judgement that has cost 15,000 lives, forced
over 3 million out of their homes and cost the taxpayers
$32.88 billion.”
The party also expressed concern at the efforts of the
Jonathan administration to make Boko Haram leader
Abubakar Shekau look invincible, with the president's
statement that Shekau would be caught before the
elections.
APC said while Nigerians would undoubtedly be happy
and relieved to see the end of Boko Haram, they must
be wondering what would have happened if the
plummeting electoral fortunes of the president had not
forced his administration to push for the six-week
postponement of the general election.
“They must also be wondering what would have
happened if the elections had been scheduled for 2016,
instead of 2015,” it stated.

PoliticsMoro calls Jonathan ‘God’s greatest gift’, says Buhari cannot stage upset by Itulah(op): 7:18am On Feb 25, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan’s emergence as Nigeria’s President is a great blessing to the country, the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, has said. Moro told newsmen in Abuja on Monday that Jonathan has effectively used the transformation agenda as a tool to launch Nigeria on the path of progress and development. According to Moro, “the greatest gift that God has given to the country today is Mr. President.
“Dr. Jonathan inherited from past administrations moribund social infrastructures. Our roads were impassable, our hospitals, as they say, were mere consulting units. At a point, some of them were not even qualified to be consulting institutions “Our schools lacked direction, and at a point, the standard of education was nose-diving at a very alarming rate. “Our airports were eyesores. Our drive towards providing sustainable, clean drinkable water for the people was non-existent. Our agriculture was nose-diving to a level that food insecurity threatened the nation. I can go on and on and on.

“What is just simply required is the goodwill of the
Nigerian people, their support and cooperation to
capitalize on this launch pad to development that the
transformation agenda has provided for Nigeria.”
Moro expressed confidence that Jonathan would win the forthcoming presidential election, noting that the
candidate of opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), lacked the
capacity to stage any major upset in the forthcoming
general elections.
“Today, I have enumerated the various achievements of this present administration, even in the face of daunting insecurity in the country, the daunting distraction from the opposition.
“This government has remained focused and building on the very foundation that it has laid to take Nigeria to the next level of development,” Moro posited.
