FamilyRe: Married Civil Servants In Today's Economy, How are you coping? by Itzlinda(f): 6:22pm On Jul 10, 2023
Dimaya:
I am writing this post in response to my initial post that made front page yesterday in which a lady said she won't get pregnant until her husband starts earning over 200K

See here:
https://www.nairaland.com/7729988/girl-wont-get-pregnant-husband/

People's reactions got me thinking heavily because nobody addressed the obvious elephant in the room:

unreasonable civil service salaries

In the original post's video, it was established that Nigerian civil servants starting out with a degree ( level 8 ) earn an average of 75K monthly.

And it takes as much as 15-20 years before they can earn close to 200K monthly.

With the current high cost of living (particularly food, transportation and housing), it seems the government doesn't expect civil servants to be able to support their families on their salaries.

This begs the question: does the Nigerian government pay enough for civil servants to get married?

And also, if you're a married civil servant earning less than 100K, how on earth are you able to meet your obligations today?

How?

PoliticsNGX All-share Index Crosses 60,000 Points For The First Time Since 2008 by Itzlinda(op): 11:58am On Jun 28, 2023
The Nigerian stock market closed in the green today, with the All-Share Index (ASI) rising by 1.3% to cross 60,000 index points.
The market’s positive performance is being attributed to the suspension and arrest of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, and the changes to Nigeria’s foreign exchange operational framework.
Market operators are now expecting that the reforms in the monetary and forex policy will lead to an inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the market.

Equity trading on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) closed trading on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023, in the green territory as the NGX All-Share Index appreciated by 1.3% to cross 60,000 index points.

This is the highest point the ASI has reached in over 15 years.

Investors sentiment has remained positive as the market cheered some of the economic decisions of President Bola Tinubu especially the changes to Nigeria’s foreign exchange operational framework.

President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies (which Nairametrics dubs Tinubunomics) appear to be having a ripple effect on Nigeria’s economy and it is no surprise that the capital market which is the barometer of the economy is having a positive outing.

Market performance: According to available statistics obtained by Nairametrics, the equities market on Tuesday closed with capital gains of N421 billion.

The All-Share Index (ASI)- the barometer that measures all share prices at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), continued its winning streak as the benchmark index gained 1.30% to settle at 60,108.86 points, the highest point in over a decade (precisely 5 March 2008 when it was 66,381.20).
Gains in MTNN (+2.77%), Zenith Bank (+4.62%), and GTCO (+5.20%) buoyed the broad market’s strong performance.
As a result, the year-to-date (YTD) return rose to 17.28%, while market capitalization gained N421.19 billion to close at N32.73 trillion.
Analysis of today’s market activities showed trade turnover settled lower relative to the previous session, with the value of transactions down by 4.01%.

A total of 763.70 million shares valued at N12.53 billion were exchanged in 9,463 deals. Access Holdings (+3.61%) led the volume chart with 111.67 million units traded while GTCO (+5.20%) led the value chart in deals worth N2.69 billion.

What operators said: Former President of the Chartered Institute of Brokers (CIS) and the Managing Director of Arthur Steven Asset Management Limited, Mr. Olatunde Amolegbe said the main driver was the beginning of the cleanup programme by the president at the CBN.

He noted that market operators now expect that the reforms in the monetary and forex policy will lead to an inflow of foreign portfolio investment in the market.

“This was the main driver of the market. The changes at the CBN should lead to changes in the monetary and forex policies which are expected to increase foreign participation in the market.
Recall that the previous policies of the CBN had hitherto led to a sharp drop in participation by foreign portfolio investors from 65% in 2015 to less than 10% in 2022. The new reform will lead to an increase in appetite by this class of investors in our market,” he said.
Group Executive Director, Investment Banking, Cordros Capital, Mr. Femi Ademola, said the markets appeared to have suffered significantly from the regulatory flip flops of the CBN in the past few years.

According to him, the regular interventions in the market and the deluge of circulars and policy actions from the apex bank had resulted in volatility in the market.
He noted that the implementation of the recent naira redesign policy affected the market quite negatively and pitched the populace against the CBN Governor.
Stocks snap 4-year losing streak: Nigerian stocks seem on track to snap a 4-year losing streak for the month of June.

Stocks are currently up 7.78% in June and look set to close the month positively after going four years on a losing streak.
The NGX All Share Index is also up 17.28% YTD.

If El Rufai had business with Mark, then it just lays credence to what I've heard, that El Rufai likes to work with competent young people
That claim is actually true. Most of the key agencies are headed by guys under 40. Kaduna investment agency is headed by Nur khalil. He was 25 when he was appointed. He's now 28.

His ssg, Dattijo who contested for kaduna central senatorial District and lost to pdp is just 43. He was 35 when elrufai brought him from UK and appointed him as ssg.

Elrufai really tried for the youth, perhaps that's what would consume him.

Most of his boys are abroad trained tho. Rumours had it that if you no get foreign certificate, he won't rate you with your buk or lasu degree

100%

When i see a skinny person with bad skin and bad dentition, it is meth until proven otherwise.

They usually look much older than their real age and it is close to impossible to keep a job or maintain property while on ice. It is the brother of crack in that respect. Dry skin with plenty of sores, teeth that first look jagged and sharpened then burnt and then start falling off. Hollow cheeks and appearance looking like they used football age on their documents.

In one particular respect meth is worse. Its high can last 12 to16 hours while crack's high is usually less than an hour. So, someone on ice can be crazy for close to a full day (as i found out during certain Emergency Department shifts) while someone on crack will quickly come off his high and simmer down. This means the guy on ice has a longer period to go on rampage and cause damage compared to the crack guy. The other side of the coin is that the guy on crack will soon start looking for his next fix to get another high again because of its short duration high.
Is it true that adhd drugs like adderall and ritalin are just legalised meth?

Most of those policies were actually for good governance but it seems Nigerians don't want it

How can reducing the redundant ministry workers, firing incompetent teachers, demolishing illegal structures be points to vote out a governor

Many governors just employ and overblow the Civil service just as a means of welfare to people

Well we will get what we deserve
Bolded is what most people prefer. Unfortunately elrufai think otherwise.
They say these teachers have kids and families that depend on them for for survival and he should not have fired them. He should have provide some soft landing for them like sending them back to school to be trained again.

Nigerians are just emotional and are not ready for the sacrifice that comes with the functional society.

Even some educated people see him a someone that lacks human sympathy. They believe it as wickedness that someone spent years to build 2-3m house and you come and demolished it without compensation.

Nonetheless, some part of the informed population are rooting him, it is remain to be seen if the people who ox is gored could actually cost him the election.

People are angry with elrufai. He sacked many workers that are redundant. Clipped almost 80% of primary school teachers after failing competency exam.
If you go to ministry now in kaduna, you can actually see just 10-20 staff in a ministry.

He also Demolished many houses and structures that were built illegally. Demolished and relocated many markets.

Ban okada in around the city.

You know Nigerians don't like orderliness and due process and masses see most of his policies as anti-poor.

Add that to the enemies he got in the Christian dominated southern part of the state, APC might actually end up losing the state to pdp

The truth is Kwankwaso owns kano at this moment. Nobody matches the loyal supporters he has the state in the state.

And funny thing is, the only thing got him such love is abroad scholarship program.

From 2011-2015, he sponsored more than 4000 student to study in various countries in the world. He also offers local scholarship where he sponsored Kano student to local private universities in the country like Igbinedion, covenant etc.

So like everyone has someone that benefited from the government, My cousin was trained as Pilot in Jordan. and you dont need to know anyone, just submit your document and you will be called if you are eligible. so this single act alone won him the heart of almost all the everyone.

You go see someone wey never take local flight but was sponsored to dubai and place on $200 monthly allowance.

Its good to have a different voice here.
Are you based in the North and which state...

Saying APC is loosing Kano, do you mean the state will swing to NNPP?

How can everybody be somehow involved in politics in the North, I dont really understand..
I was born and brought up within Kano metropolis and still living there.
Yes, the state is going to NNPP, I don't think there is anything that can stop that. Both Buhari and Ganduje have angered people so I don't see APC winning unless they introduced something we have never seen in the state-That's use of the gun in the election, but as long as it is thugs and usual cutlass they are using, nothing will stop NNPP from winning the election.

There is only one person in Kano APC that has mass appeal in his region, Barau Maliya, the only senator that won his re-election in the last election and there is no way his influence can win the election for APC.

This is actually not something new in Kano. Incumbent party lose Election in Kano twice since 1999. Kwankwaso lost his re-election in 2003 despite incumbency, and Shekarau anointed candidate, Sagir Takai lost to Kwankwaso in 2011.

On your last question, the people did not just vote and go come home. Everybody has the party and the candidate he is supporting. Almost everyone is involved in the campaign committee and organization for the candidate they are supporting.

so on the election day, people voted, waited, and escort the result to the collation center. so unless you use gun, there is no way you can chase away 200 people that are guarding their votes.

Kano is already lost. Ganduje can only rig in one out of the 3 senatorial, APC is greatly outnumbered in kano, unless they use federal might to rig, which is highly unlikely.

Alasan doguwa, the present majority leader who killed 15 people to secure another term is just arraigned today for murder.

It is not possible to rig election in the North like it is done in the south.

There are just no mercenaries to do that. And almost every body is some how involve in politics here
