Car Talk / Re: When Did You Buy Your First Car And How Much Was It? by ivoryhouse(m): 8:06pm On Jan 29, 2020
cuteralph101:

How I spent over 2.6 million on a car that gets me sad, embarrassed and frustrated. Now I am getting depressed…

Last year 22 June is one day I can't easily forget. I just got myself a Toyota Camry 2007 for my 25th Birthday. I bought the car for 1.8m from a very good friend of mine (8 years together). He buys and sells used and foreign (tokunbo) cars although not a certified dealer. He drove the car down to my loc and I accessed the car I was shocked as it was far from what I expected. On inspecting the car, I was not so impressed, despite having a california plate number like heck this shit supposed be better than i anticipated. The sound of the car was too noisy, the vibrations from the dashboard, the windscreen cracked (about 28inches), the interior a bit neat but the sound system to the gear lever area was not so neat. I began to doubt the prize of the car but we already negotiated at 1.8m. I asked if this car is okay, he affirmed that it is and can't sell a problem to his brother.

I drove the car out to look for a car diagnosing company but it was a rainy day had to come back not being able to get a car company to check the car. The car consumes fuel a little bit more than conventional 4 plugs and it raised further doubt about the roadworthiness of the car but what do I know car was moving although skips when entering gear 3. I didn't know much about all this as overtime I didn't put the discipline of owning a car with this being my second car am so ashamed. Went back home I asked my friend what's wrong with the car he affirmed again that nothing is wrong. A month later I started noticing oil stain where I park. I bent over and saw oil dripping my heart almost skipped while this is a small issue (I knew this later) I trembled…this car is just a month old. I spent 31k fixing this shit cos I was too busy to inspect the repairs. A week later the same issue occurred. This was getting too much.

This got me sad and mad and I was already regretting the choice of getting a car. I later opted for a car company (My worst mistake). Oil seal was fixed 4 times in 7 months oil keeps dripping from the engine. Between this period the car abruptly stops on the road and sometimes won't even start after parking. I suffered all this with a faulty steering pump which causes the steering to be stiff. Some car companies aren't trustworthy and won't likely be the solution to your car problems...but they got my car moving each time it breaks down and I paid the exorbitant cost for minor repairs for fear of this roadside mechanics. The drill continued and I kept repairing and kept paying. The worst happened in March this year when I had a hit with a reckless driver. The bonnet bent a little and bumper beyond repair. I painted the car after 11 days. I told a panel beater working with the painter to bring the car home for me on reaching close the car stopped. Suffered to get it home as the car keeps draining charged batteries.

The next day I called the car company to come take the car for checks and possible repair. The next day I was told the engine has to be ringed that it's not the alternator. Bill of 169k for everything. I opted for a new engine (2AZ and was billed 300k for everything by the same company). I also bought shaft for both legs (55k). The former engine I was told is now scrapped and would be sold for a small amount (I left it for them). The car was with them for about 7 weeks as I wasn't around. When the car was out, AC no longer working. I called and was told the compressor is bad and needs to be changed. Why me! Bill 148k Like my God what have I done...? I spent 96k to fix AC (I had to call someone else from the neighboring state). I discovered that the AC had been fixed before and resulted to change most of the AC components. had to rethink this whole spending, right now my windscreen is bad can't see well when it's raining, my headlamp bad not bright, my exhaust very noisy unwanted sound from the manifold and consumes fuel, the legs need to be checked again (camber bushing or what do they call it) and interior needs fixing. Other issues although not certain is the suspension.
After penning my frustration in this piece Nairaland kept banning me from uploading…I gave up trying. The worst right now my gear doesn't select after a journey of 112km to and fro where I base. I need to share this experience so people can learn from this.
The estimate for expenses carried out so far on repairs so far should be over 850k in one year (major repairs: New Engine + Shaft 355k, AC 96k, Legs [fixed twice] 64K {break pads, hub, tie rod, bushing etc}) (minor repairs: oil seal repair 4 times around 80k (new oil every time to put a new oil seal), Nozzle + Plugs + Fan + Key starter 44k, Exhaust (net) 10.4k. Others: painting 60k and panel beating 15k. (all of this excluding gear) Bought tires several times as they keep peeling off from bad alignment although Belgium tires. There are others I can't remember right now. All this excluding fuel. I honestly can't continue like this. Cars been parked for 4 months now. I cant kill myself

Am sad cry
The car's issues are fixable. The companies have been over billing you. Create a thread here when you're ready to fix it and people here will help you. Just make sure you keep all business on your thread so you don't get fleeced.

What are you saying? Why would a brand new compressor fail in 2weeks, except it's the crappy Chinese knock off of a knock off of a knock off that cheapskates buy for their autos? Get a brand new compressor and your AC will chill like factory AC for years...and please don't mention used manual compressor, I beg you

VirtIQ:
I would love to know how copart works.
Does it mean i can win a bid of 700$ for a benz suv if i place a bid. How possible is it. What other payments would i be making once bid ends. Does import duty vary on whether its accidented car or not.
I need to know some of these things.
Make sure the car is close to the port. It's salvage, and you're buying without physical inspection(well, you can pay $200?to have someone inspect it-dont know if its still $200) so prepare your mind for surprises.
You can bid by yourself, read copart terms & conditions. The charges are there in black&white.
Calculate all fixed costs before bidding. Fixed costs like copart charges (you'll find them in T&C) , trucking, shipping & clearing charges. This will give you an idea of what the landing cost will be. Goodluck

Car Talk / Re: ENYO Petrol Station Charging Extra Fees For POS Transaction by ivoryhouse(m): 9:58am On Nov 04, 2019
uboma:
Hello fam,

I hope everyone is having a good day.

I was at one of the Enyo Petrol Station outlet yesterday to buy fuel and was told that they charge NGN50 for every POS transaction from NGN1000 and above.

They claim this is in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria guidelines. I was given a leaflet (shown below) where the notice of charging extra fees is listed.

Is it the same with other Petrol Stations in your location?

Easy fix. Pay cash. The N50 stamp duty is fraudulent

I can’t see at night when driving, does anyone have any contact for people that sell bright led bulbs for Camry both highbeams and low beams and fog light thank preferably 10,000lumens 6000k xenon white light
Go to Ladipo, they are available.
And for those asking him to clean the casing and adjust the beams, when these lights age they dim. The options are to replace or replace. LEDs are brighter and if the beams are set right, will not endanger other road users.

What of fuel pump.

This is how I maintain mine. When starting my car, I try not to turn my ignition switch quickly. It's best you turn it on, at this point you will hear a warm sound from the fuel pump. After that fell free kick start the engine. My fuel pump is going to 2 years.

Very funny..why not push the car to start, who knows, you may prolong the fuel filter and pump and tank that way

Ceoking6:
Ghana our west Africa brothers have been silent in approval of sa treatment.

A time would come when Ghana would start their xenophobia worst than sa own, I say this becos each day hundreds of Nigeria youths are making the trip through the porus boarder of Ghana only to go do fraud and institute corruption in various groups known as HK's.

Ghana's always have the Ghana must go treatment in their heads, we have refused to talk to our so called youths who claim to be finding better opportunities but go to better opportunities countries to bastardise it.

Tomorrow we would start forming victims
Where do we get these rhetoric from? What makes you think Nigerians are more corrupt than other African nationals? South Africans have been doing drugs and violent robberies decades before Nigerians started flocking to the country. BTW Zimbabweans control the drug cartels in parts of South Africa.
You mention Ghana, those ones are even worse. Gbanains have been defrauding nationals from every other part of the world who go to Ghana with the hopes of buying some legendary Ghanaian gold.
Africans generally envy Nigerians because our mindset and attitude to work is quite different from theirs. Nigerians intimidate other African nationals, without making any concerted effort.
A friend had an interview (when she lived in Ghana) slated for 9am, and she got their at 8.45am while the Ghanaians didn't start strolling in till way past 10am.
Nigerians, please stop accusing fellow Nigerians of being the problem whenever there is an issue because you're only giving abusers more reason to victimize our brothers and sisters in diaspora.
Finally, all nations commit one level of fraud or the other but still get up to defend their citizens that have been victimized,in any country on earth.
Be proud, be bold, be encouraged, we are Nigerians!

Car Talk / Re: Warning!!!! Don't Buy Synthetic Engine Oil by ivoryhouse(m): 6:07am On Sep 05, 2019
EgunMogaji2:

Honda makes cars, amongst other vehicles, but not oil. They simply rebrand oil that meets their specs.

To save money you can find the source direct.

I still say that you can use any of the locally available oils but you have to be fastidious with oil change intervals.
The locally available oil may work for much older cars but do not protect newer cars so I would recommend using much better quality synthetic oil on newer cars

Politics / Re: Ihedioha Should Open Imo Cargo Airport Built By Okorocha - Sam Onwuemeodo by ivoryhouse(m): 2:22pm On Sep 02, 2019
stephanie11:
The governor of Imo State Chief Emeka Ihedioha should be advised by well meaning Imo Citizens to open the Imo International Cargo Airport built by the former governor of the State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, for operations, which the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo had also commissioned.

The opening of the International Cargo Airport has now become increasingly necessary following the Federal Government’s moves to close the Enugu Airport for renovation works. And when such action takes place, the next option for Imo people, South-East people, Nigerians and the rest of the World especially the businessmen and women in this part of the Country would be the Imo International Cargo Airport.

The former governor had built the International Cargo Airport to open Imo State for business to the rest of the World. And the current governor should take cognizance of the fact that although Okorocha built the International Cargo Airport, but it does not belong to him, but to Imo people whose money, in the first place, was used in financing the project.

The governor should look beyond Okorocha and see what the State and her people stand to benefit if the Cargo Airport is opened for operations, both now and in the nearest future. Especially when everything needed to be done had been done and what is left is to open the venture for business.

The governor should also be advised to allow the Judges or the State Judiciary to move to the Ultra-modern Justice Oputa High Court Complex also built by him which the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad had described as the best across the nation on the day he came to Commission the project. Leaving such edifice unused and allowing weeds or grasses to take over the Complex is a disservice to Imo people.

It is also proper to advise Governor Ihedioha to equally move the Police to the new Police Headquarters and the Prisons to the new Prisons Headquarters also built by his administration along Aba Road. It is not advisable to leave such gigantic structures unused. And although the Police Headquarters and Prisons Headquarters he built could be adjudged Federal projects, the governor can go for refund.

The former governor had built these amazing structures to decongest Owerri, the State Capital and also create cities within the Owerri Municipality. And the idea had paid off because Owerri has now connected Obinze, Umuguma, Nwaorubi, and so on.

Chief Ihedioha should equally be asked to open the two flyovers built by Owelle Okorocha which he closed few days after his inauguration and reduce the rate of playing Politics with projects that have direct bearing with the people. The two flyovers had been in use for about four years before his emergence as governor and closing them with the aim of discrediting them for Political reasons won’t serve Imo people in particular and the general public any useful purpose. Owelle had built the flyovers and tunnels to stop traffic-jams in Owerri and to save lives.

The governor can do all these to mark his one hundred days in office, all in the interest of Imo people and the general public.

Special Adviser (media) to the former governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha

Here's a once in a lifetime opportunity of owning a Hummer H1! With less than 100,000 original miles, clean interior, strong 5.4l v8 engine unique to only the 1995 H1, it's hard to beat! The car is being sold as is! It has a damaged radiator cooler and condenser, otherwise, it's good to go! I've taken pains to capture every relevant part so look closely at the pictures. A rearward side window is broken. The interior has no issues;no rips and the leather is not cracked!
Engine is in perfect condition! The owner bought it for use on his farm but he needs money for a project and has to let this go!
Asking price is N3,150,000.

Goodluck!

Business / Re: What Is Your Experience With Shoptomydoor by ivoryhouse(m): 3:52pm On Sep 20, 2018
Hello, I have been shipping with shoptomydoor for over 4 years. The experience has been good until recently. Shoptomydoor delivers and a bit timely too but just don't let your items stay beyond 14days..oops, 21 days ( I actually have items in their warehouse, till date that they started billing me after 14 days and when I pointed out to them that they advertised 21 days, they did some abracadabra and said they reduced storage charges), they will use mysterious charges and make you abandon the goods, while they still bill you in your warehouse even after they have auctioned the items off!

Anyways, back to my present issues...they used to charge a little over $3 / pound until recently when the took it up to over $4 / pound, without informing their customers. I introduced a friend to shoptomydoor and we ordered items. Our 21 day storage elapses tomorrow and shoptomydoor is asking her to pay N42,237.65 for clearing, duty, and local handling while the shipping cost is N44,332.90. There is no hazmat in the shipment. They have been giving really shoddy reasons why its so much higher than their advertised 10% of actual price.

They asked her to change the delivery address so the cost will reduce. She did this, and the reduced the shipping cost while the other cost remained as is. Shoptomydoor, you have to do better than this. I have introduced over 10 friends who have shipped out and I'm really disappointed at this new trend.

I have my own issues with you and I will created a separate thread when I'm ready. For now, kindly sort out my friend's issues before the 21 day period elapses. Her unit number is UNIT NG131944. I've uploaded the cost for all to see.

I haven't said you should not deal with shoptomydoor, just read their terms and never ever let your items stay beyond the 21 day period as their advertised rates of calculating demorrage are nowhere near their real calculations. Moreover, they'd rather auction your items than accept any kind of offer from you.
