Car Talk / Re: Can Your Engine Oil Do This ?... by ivoryhouse(m): 1:37pm On Mar 16, 2020
Hey Dru, I like what you're doing, encouraging the ignorant to use quality synthetic lubes especially as recommended by the manufacturer.
I would also like to point out that there is a plethora of great lubes out there and Mobil 1 EP is just one of many.
Keep it up

Really long time...dem no dey hear word! Someone bought a nee transmission on his h2 that came in from the US in December 2019. He had serviced the transmission with the wrong fluid and it started shifting erratically, and they convinced him to buy a replacement. And he may end up doing same to the engine as he doesn't want to vet genuine parts for it. That's the story of majority of car owners in Nigeria. They can't spend N50k on parts but can spend N400k on an engine or transmission...it crazy
sooperrescue:

Long time. I saw a guy carrying 5 litres of mobil 20w50 with pride and I asked him for which car and he said Toyota muscle and I told him to go to his car and bring the oil cover and he did and discovered that he needed 5w20. His mechanic later told him to buy Glife and he grudgingly went to buy. The owners know the oil being used on their cars. A customer was using Mobil 20w50 on his range rover evoque and he spent 1 3m to fix it. If no one is advising them like the Op is doing right now, they will say that mechanics are the cause but we have told them but they will never hear.

Truth about low budget Nigerian used cars is, you will spend money before you drive them or before you enjoy driving them. You'll get a '99 sienna for about 500k but you'll spend a little over a N100k just servicing and sorting out basic suspension parts. So, yeah, budget about N700-N750k for it, unless you want to drive it as is wink
Car Talk / Re: What Is And Isn't A Muscle Car by ivoryhouse(m): 6:36am On Mar 15, 2020
There a many new generation muscle cars, not close to it but real muscle cars. The Dodge brand is one if the last remaining companies to still build muscle cars. Their Challenger and Charger are bona fide muscle cars, so is the Chevrolet SS, Cadillac CTS v, Ford Mustang Shelby Gt350R, Chevrolet Camaro Zl1, Equus Bass 770, and the Mustang Gt Fastback. Permit me to share pictures of these awesome muscle cars.
abbeg:
I noticed a lot of Nigerians, and people in general don't know what s muscle car is.
A muscle car is a front engine, 2 doored, rear wheel drive coupe manufactured between 1964-1975. Note this.
This means what we commonly refer to today as 'muscle cars' are actually totally different vehicles.
Chevrolet camaro.: One of the most popular muscle cars ever, the Camaro was revived in 2008, but as a SPORTS car. With turbochargers, excellent handling sleek, sporty lines and a beautiful interior, it has all the makings of a typical luxury coupe. The fact it bears similar name's as it's ancestors means nothing.

Dodge charger and challenger: The modern day dodges are about the closest thing to a real muscle car one can find nowadays. Sporting large v8s and bold muscular looks( in the case of the challenger) they try to carry on the legacy of their forefathers. Although the charger is now a 4 door family sedan, rather than the menacing beast it was in the 60s and 70s.

Ford mustang: Much like the Camaro, the modern day mustang has evolved into a sports coupe. With excellent handling and a redesigned and "sportier" exterior, it has all the looks and charm and performance of a modern day exotic, rather than a straight-line monster.

In short..... Muscle cars are dead. Gone. Finito.
What we have now are evolved versions of the classics. The last "muscle car" was probably the Pontiac firebird trans-sm in 1978, although it didn't check all the boxes either. Emission laws and the oil embargo pulled the plug on muscle cars.
The modern day versions sometimes sport a v6, or a turbo-4 and in some extreme cases; an electric motor. Not very "muscular", but a lot more "sporty". Turbochargers are a supercar thing.
The line between supercar and muscle car is blurring by the minute. If we begin to call anything that isn't a Volvo a "muscle car", we are only disrespecting the legacy the classics left behind for us.

I have this ac wahala(not cooling) with my rav4 for a while now. Changed compressor and condenser last month as recommended, still not cooling. The ac guy now thinks its electrical. Who knows the right place to track and solve this problem once and all in Lagos?
Did tou replace the valves? And you're not clear, isn't that the compressor has no power or it blows but isn't cooling? Most times, we just change compressor and condenser but forget to replace other more sensitive parts. Drier accumulator, valves and other really sensitive parts should be changed, especially drier accumulator which BTW should be replaced every time the air conditioning system is opened. See Mosbus, and if you can afford it, Radautoworks will restore it to factory settings

There a lot of great used car deals out there. I've got a 1994 jeep wrangler limited, 2001 for N250k and it ran and drove with great body panels. You just have to know where to look and what to look for. There are brands you shouldn't buy used, for even N10k, though. Don't let longer throat for big car put you in trouble grin

Car Talk / Re: ......20w50 Oil Does More Harm To Your Engine if it is not needed ... by ivoryhouse(m): 5:47am On Mar 15, 2020
I don't quite blame the lube oil companies. The average Nigerian won't research, so you see a graduate paying heed to a stark illiterate mechanic that works from under a tree, literally. Then I wander how someone will spend N5m to buy a car and find it difficult to buy quality lubes for it. Many prefer used parts and it baffles me. Ladipo gets over N1b worth of sales per day and I advise anyone who can to also cash out, since they won't listen to sound advise.
sooperrescue:

You have been very busy trying to convince a lot of die hard 20w50 fans. Great job. The state of naija used cars points to one direction. Wrong use of engine oil. I have always believed that there is a grand conspiracy to destroy our cars by the oil companies. Recently, Sahara group and Nnpc just introduced their 20w50 oil into the market and with the way they are hyping the oil, that means that they will reduce the population of cars from our roads. Even though we talk about voided warranty, when we use 20w50, it is the company that provides the warranty that is voiding the warranty. A lot of new cars are being serviced with 20w50 by the authorized dealership and you will now ask, who will provide the warranty if that oil is being used. And when you use the oil that is not recommended for your car, the car is gradually being destroyed. Kia and Hyundai took over the market share from corolla because of elizade policy of using 20w50 to service their cars and these same dealers are now using the same 20w50. I have gone round several dealers offices and they are all using 20w50 oil for their new vehicles. Either it is deliberate or they are ignorant. But I think it is the money making factor that is driving them to destroy the cars and sell more cars. Cars 45 are carrying the burden of the poor maintenance culture in the country. I have never seen anyone who took their well maintained cars to sell to them. At their yard, you will always find disgusting cars there and it is these holy motorists who were once proud owners of these cars that dumped them there. Mechanics and parts sellers are smiling to the banks all the time because we want to tell people that we know more about the car than the manufacturer.

Car Talk / Re: Is Toyota A Better Company Than Mercedes? by ivoryhouse(m): 3:42pm On Mar 02, 2020
This is car talk so people will have differing preferences when it comes to car brands, like pretty much all else in life. I'm neither a Mercedes nor Toyota fan but there are certain cars manufactured by both I would own. Toyota's Tundra '09, Toyota Land cruiser 2004-2008, and the Lexus ISF are great. For the benz, it's their GT (the one with gull wing doors) that I like.
What I find rather disturbing on this forum, is the lack of decorum, especially in the way we address each other. Guys, really, it's possible to share your views without calling others names. It's the abuse that keeps a lot of people off the comments section. If we want this forum to be much fun, we must try and be more civil in all we say.

Good day car gurus, I’m having a problem choosing a car to upgrade to

I’ve been using a 2005 corolla sport for about a year now and I’m considering upgrading my car to either Lexus is250 2008 model or Toyota Corolla sport 2012. The only problem I’m having is if the Lexus is good and economical for Nigerian roads

PS: I travel a lot and I’ve never had any major issues with my 05 corolla... Hoping which will serve better between the 2012 corolla and 2008 is250

I need enlightenment please

2010 Camry

OJLion:
Good evening sirs
About to buy my first car now (Glory be to God) but I’m confused because I’m not too automobile savvy. If na phone now nobody fit sell me but when it’s cars then I’m a dummy. I have a budget of 2m and I’m offered two options, A 2010 Camry , a 2008 is250 and a 2008/2009 C300 all in the same price range so I’m confused. What I’m looking for is speed for long travels because I travel frequently, durability and fuel economy (though not really a paramount concern) and availability and price of parts. Please help your boy out.

The pilot is your best bet, going by your list. Try and get the pilot with 4wd.

ElRazur:
Good morning people. Abeg, I need to hear your views, opinion and personal experiences with some of these cars listed below.

Ford Escape (2009 onwards but not the newer design though)

Acura MDX (2008)

Mazda CX9 (2008+)

Infinity FX 35 (2008)

Honda Pilot (2009)

I need something that could tackle Naija road but do so with some degree of comfort and good handling. Coming from an Xterra, I appreciate the overall off road capabilities of that car but I need something more refined.

Please people, this is not a thread about how one car is better than the other but what will probably fit into my need.

I have looked at the Acura MDX and Mazda CX9 a lot more just because they both appear to offer that good ground clearance, relatively newish design, good off road capabilities, good handling and shape of both have grown on me.

I also like the Ford Escape - I've had experience with the 2004/5 model, however, I have no clue as to how the more boxy 2009 version will handle Naija roads and level of comfort.

Anyway, enough story. Make I hear from you people. Thank you all in advance.

May God deal with some dealers.
My 2001 Ford Mondeo bought from Cotonou in August for 1M almost ruined my life even though most of the repairs i paid for were normal routine maintenance (AC Compressor, evaporator & blower, 2 oxygen sensors, front brake pads, 1 spare tyre, 1 complete set of fuel pump (car rejected two before i was told to get a complete set) and front shock absorber but i wasn't expecting the repairs to pile up within the first 6 months.
I deployed the car on Uber /taxify but i never overworked the car within the 3 months its been on the platform but the car has set me back by 210,000 naira .Two weeks ago , i observed the vibration and jerking in traffic which has been reoccurring but when i slide the gear into neutral or Park , it stops. The mechanic said i need to get new engine seats and service the car ( done 8000km/6000miles already on Lagos roads ) before 10th of January next year.
Its a sad situation really seeing a Tokunbo car draining your pocket.
You most likely bought a salvage mondeo. One thing with savage cars is that you will spend money replacing parts for a few months, after which you start enjoying the car. Most dealers won't buy clear title cars because they cost a lot more than salvage title cars. Just ensure you bug good quality parts, otherwise you'll be replacing parts for a long while
