On September 1st, 2025, a court in Finland sentenced Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed leader of a Biafra separatist group, to six years in prison. He was found guilty of terrorism-related crimes, tax fraud, incitement to violence, and breaking Finnish law. The shocking part? Within hours of the verdict, many of his supporters—most of them Nigerians—stormed the official social media accounts of the Finnish Government and the President of Finland, leaving angry comments, insults, and trolling messages. So the question is: Is this really a smart way to show support for Ekpa, or are his followers directing their anger at the wrong people? --- ✦ What He Was Convicted Of ✦ According to Finnish authorities: Ekpa was inciting violence in Nigeria through constant “sit-at-home” orders. He was linked to groups accused of carrying out violent attacks in the South-East. He was also found guilty of tax evasion and misconduct as a practicing lawyer in Finland. The crimes happened between 2021 and 2024, but he was convicted in 2025. The sentence will be served in Finland, though the effects of his actions were mostly felt here in Nigeria. --- ✦ Nigeria’s Response ✦ The Nigerian Government praised the verdict, describing it as a “win against terrorism.” Officials like the Attorney General and the Chief of Defence Staff said the ruling proved Nigeria was right about Ekpa’s role in fueling insecurity. There are even talks that, after serving time in Finland, Ekpa might still face extradition to Nigeria to answer for more charges. --- ✦ IPOB’s Response ✦ Interestingly, IPOB (the group Ekpa claimed to represent) quickly distanced itself from him. Their spokesperson said Ekpa was never an official in IPOB. They also made it clear that his conviction is “his personal issue” and has nothing to do with the movement. --- ✦ The Trolling Storm ✦ After the court ruling, Ekpa’s die-hard supporters turned their anger towards Finland. They flooded the official Twitter (X) pages of the Finnish Government and the Finnish President with: Accusations of “oppressing a freedom fighter.” Emotional messages about “Igbo rights.” Straight-up insults and trolling. This now raises another debate: Is trolling a legitimate way to protest? Or is it just embarrassing Nigerians on the international stage? --- ✦ Bigger Picture ✦ This case shows the problem of diaspora politics. Ekpa has been living in Finland since 2007, where he even tried to enter politics. From there, he declared himself “Prime Minister” of a government-in-exile. But now, his activities abroad have led to real bloodshed and insecurity back home in Nigeria. It’s a lesson on how actions taken overseas can still have dangerous effects locally. --- ✦ Final Thoughts ✦ The Simon Ekpa case touches on a lot of big questions: 1. Where do we draw the line between freedom of speech and incitement to violence? 2. Should the Nigerian Government do more to curb diaspora-led militancy? 3. Is trolling Finland’s leaders really helping the cause—or just damaging Nigeria’s image? Over to you, Nairalanders. What do you think?

Introduction Asthma, a chronic disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathlessness and wheezing, affects a substantial number of individuals globally. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 339 million people worldwide live with this condition. In Nigeria, a nation of approximately 200 million people, the prevalence of asthma is growing. Despite this, comprehensive data on the disease’s epidemiology, management, and impact remain elusive. This article elucidates the necessity and benefits of establishing an asthma registry in Nigeria, from enhancing the disease's understanding to improving its management and outcomes. The Prevalence of Asthma in Nigeria Understanding the burden of asthma in Nigeria has been challenging due to the lack of nationwide, systematic data collection. Studies have reported asthma prevalence rates ranging from 13% to 15% in adults and up to 20% in children, implying millions of affected individuals. Given these high rates, a well-structured asthma registry becomes vital for better disease understanding, planning, and management. Understanding an Asthma Registry An asthma registry is a systematically organized collection of data about individuals diagnosed with asthma. It includes demographic information, medical histories, asthma severity, medication use, hospitalizations, emergency department visits, and outcomes. Such a registry can provide insights into disease prevalence, incidence, and trends over time, and it can help identify gaps in care, inform policy and resource allocation, and guide research. Why Nigeria Needs an Asthma Registry Informing Epidemiology and Research: An asthma registry can offer an accurate picture of asthma prevalence and incidence, identify trends, and observe the disease's natural progression. It can also help identify risk factors, trigger patterns, and population subgroups most affected by asthma in Nigeria. This evidence can drive research into asthma's unique aspects within the Nigerian context, informing interventions. Improving Asthma Management and Care: By collecting data on treatments and their outcomes, an asthma registry can reveal which approaches are most effective, leading to improved management guidelines. It can also highlight gaps in current care provision, enabling health authorities to address these deficiencies. Guiding Policy and Advocacy: Reliable data can inform policy decisions and guide the allocation of healthcare resources. It can justify the need for increased funding for asthma services and provide a baseline for evaluating policy and practice changes. Furthermore, data from a registry can bolster advocacy efforts, raising awareness of asthma's impact among policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the general public. Facilitating Education and Training: The trends and patterns highlighted in the registry data can inform the education and training of healthcare professionals, ensuring they're equipped to manage asthma effectively. Enhancing Patient Care and Quality of Life: Ultimately, the insights gained from an asthma registry can lead to better patient care. By understanding and addressing the challenges faced by individuals living with asthma, healthcare providers can enhance patients' quality of life and reduce the societal burden of the disease. Challenges and Considerations in Establishing an Asthma Registry While the establishment of an asthma registry in Nigeria is vital, it is not without its challenges. First is the need for a standardized data collection system, ensuring that the same information is consistently collected across the country. Secondly, a robust data management system is necessary to handle the volume of data and facilitate its analysis. Thirdly, privacy and security concerns around patient data must be carefully managed. Lastly, sustained funding is needed to maintain the registry and analyze its data. Conclusion The establishment of an asthma registry in Nigeria is an essential step toward a more accurate understanding of the disease's impact and the effectiveness of interventions. It will facilitate evidence-based decisions at all levels - policy, healthcare provision, and patient management. Despite the challenges associated with its establishment, the benefits of an asthma registry are compelling. It is time to invest in systematic data collection and analysis to guide Nigeria's fight against asthma and improve the lives of those living with this chronic disease. |

Parthenogenesis and the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ- Idowu Oluwaseyi The Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ, a cornerstone of Christian belief, has been a topic of considerable discussion, debate, and interpretation throughout the ages. Parthenogenesis, a natural phenomenon where offspring develop from unfertilized eggs, has been proposed by some as a possible scientific explanation for this miraculous event. While far from being a commonly accepted theory, it offers a fascinating perspective when pondered theoretically. Parthenogenesis, which translates from Greek as "virgin birth," is a recognized reproductive strategy in many species, including some reptiles, fish, birds, and insects. While it's indeed rare in mammals and unknown in humans, the complete absence of it cannot be definitively stated given our continually evolving understanding of biology. In the hypothetical scenario of human parthenogenesis, the offspring would be a clone of the mother, as no paternal genetic material is involved. This means that, theoretically, if Jesus was born of parthenogenesis, he would have inherited Mary's genetic material exclusively. However, this presents a challenge as parthenogenetic offspring are typically female, due to the lack of a Y chromosome. Yet, one might argue that exceptions exist in biology. There have been instances in other species where chromosomal alterations can lead to changes in the typical sex determination. While extremely rare and not fully understood, these exceptions leave a minuscule window of possibility for a male human parthenogenetic birth. Moreover, recent scientific advancements have demonstrated induced parthenogenesis in the laboratory, whereby mammalian eggs are stimulated to develop into embryos without fertilization. This suggests that, theoretically, parthenogenesis in mammals might be possible, albeit under very specific and controlled conditions. In this light, if we allow for the uncharted territories of biological science and the existence of divine intervention, one might argue that the birth of Jesus Christ could be viewed through the lens of parthenogenesis. In conclusion, while the idea of parthenogenesis explaining the Virgin Birth pushes the boundaries of our current scientific understanding, it offers an intriguing point of intersection between faith and science. It's a reminder that the exploration of the natural world can sometimes illuminate, in unexpected ways, the mysteries that have captivated human thought for millennia. |

A research conducted by Researchers at the University of Ilorin has established that Garri can throughly alter performances of athletes in sport programs thereby increasing chances for sport successes. This research study investigated the effect of concentrations of “Gari” solution on endurance ability of school children in Ilorin metropolis, Nigeria. The design of the study was experimental that involves the manipulation of a particular variable. In order to provide solution to the research problem, four hypotheses were drawn. Forty[40] subjects were randomly selected as sample from four male secondary schools in Ilorin metropolis and they are those that are not actively involved in sports, but within the age limit of 12-13 years. Standardized instruments were used for both the experimental and control groups. The results of the experimental groups showed a significant difference on the effect of concentrations of “gari” solution on endurance ability of school children in Ilorin metropolis within 6%, 7%, and 8% respectively. The three groups with treatment improved tremendously on their performance over the result of the post-test and that of the control group. This showed that each percentage of the treatment has improved the performances ability of the school children in endurance activities of 4km run/walk. Based on the finding, it was recommended among others that, coaches, athletes and others involved in endurance activities should cultivate habit of taking “gari” solution to enhance their performances. https://eajbsc.journals.ekb.eg/article_16127.html |
