justwise: That is possible depending on how much your rent and bills are.
Well, such a person would have to cut his coat according to his cloth. I was able to survive comfortably in London with around £500 per month in 2009/2010. My rent then was £320 inclusive of all bills and a lil above £40 for zones 2 & 3 travel card and 30 pounds mobile phone bill. Always cooked my own food.

Oyibo babes na free. If you carry hand go put for Naija babes, you are on your own. As you dey top up her oyster, na so u go dey buy lycamobile top up join meanwhile she could be earning same or even more than you.

Are you saying that someone working 20 hrs a week won't earn enough to cover living expenses?

honourableseyi: I have been reading about £7,200 maintenance fee for a year. Please if someone is going for an undergraduate program which is 3 years and has nobody to send money to him from Naija or anywhere . After he must have exhaust the first year maintenance fee, what happens with the remaining 2 years tuition and maintenance fee? I mean how can someone source for it? Can it be source for over there doing part time job? Thanks
You can earn enough for living expenses (NOT TUITION FEE) from part time work.

Stop overworking yourself mate. Apart from saying that there's been no improvement in the last decade, every other aspect of the article especially on the attitude of Nigerians is spot on.

It has got nothing to do with the government of the day.

You call me slave boy but you are probably posting this using a device manufactured by the 'oyibo'

naptu2: So, you mean that you agree that the problem just suddenly started in the 1990s? I disagree. It started waaay before then and it didn't start suddenly, it was more gradual.
I do not agree that it started in the 1990s but from the late 80s through the 90s, it increas at a geometric progression.

Then i paused to ask myself if the stress is worth it - then came to a conclusion that it dosen't especially when it is coming from a foreigner who with due respect knows scarcely about Nigeria and Nigerians.
I rest my case.
Typical of a Nigerian. If you didn't care to read the article, why bother commenting at all? Unfortunately for you, this foreigner seems to know Nigeria more than any Nigerian does.

I agree with the author 99%.

naptu2: I've read most of it, but I didn't get to the end. I agree with some of the author's points and disagree with others.

But that doesn't change what I wrote above.

(By the way, it might still make it to the front page. I've noticed that threads are moved to the front page in cycles. Not all threads can make it to the front page and the threads that do make it to the front page are not moved to the front page at once).
The only part I disagree with is the author's assertion that there has been no improvement in the last 10 years.

naptu2: 1) Everybody wants his/her thread to make the front page.

2) Everybody thinks that his/her thread is important.

3) It is not possible for all threads to make the front page.

4) Nairaland is a general interest forum, made up of different sections (politics, music, movies, fashion, food, etc).

5) The front page moderators try to reflect this diversity.

6) The front page moderators also have to promote threads that will increase traffic (some of those newsy/political stories only interest nigerians, while music, celebrities, movie, etc stories interest nigerians as well as non-nigerians).

7) The moderators also have to promote breaking news, mega stories and stories that are trending in other fora.
Did you read the thread I'm making reference to at all? If you did, you would be asking for it to hit front page. It's already 4 page long without being moved to the front page. Just incase you'd like to read the article, here's the link;

Sincere 9gerian: And why should an article written by a foreigner and is 100% negative about my fatherland make the front page? I dont think it should make front page.

Yes, we have our problems and negatives but there are also positives and lots of things to celebrate in our country. For instance, we are about to conclude the BIGGEST privatisation process, atleast in Africa. So far, the TRANSPARENCY in the whole process is unprecedented. Examples of positives abound in this country. Yes, we have to work, as individuals and as govt, to curtail the negatives BUT it is not in the place of any white man to sit in judgement over the affairs of our country
The article is front page worthy. The only part I disagree with is where he said that no progress has been made in the last decade but coming from someone who only came to Nigeria 3 years ago, he could be excused owing to the fact that he obviously doesn't know where we were 10 years ago.

Apart from that, the article deals with the orientation of the individual Nigerian and I think reading the article in full will cause a sane mind to ponder and reflect and maybe see how one can be the change one so earnestly desires.

I can bet my breakfast you didn't read all of the article.

Nairaland GeneralIs Nairaland Becoming A Playground? by jamesibor(op): 11:08am On Aug 23, 2013
Good morning Nairalanders. I ask this question because for sometime now, there has been less serious topics hitting the front page than say 'gossips' and topics that end up turning to tribal wars.

Last night, I sourced a deep and comprehensive article written by a British expatriate oil worker who has spent 3 years working in Nigeria. This article provided an indepth analysis of Nigeria, Nigerians and problems militating against Nigeria's greatness.

Going by the quality of the article, the response it could generate, the deep message it conveys and the call to action thereof, one would have thought that on first sight, the article would have not only be moved to front page but also made sticky for at least one week to but alas, after many hours of trying to get the Mods attention by suggesting through several ways that the thread be moved to the front page (by my humble self and other well meaning Nairalanders) for further intelligent discourse, the Mods have turned a blind eye to the thread not withstanding the fact that Afam4eva was seen viewing the topic more than 12 hours ago.

It is also worthy of note to mention that from the time I suggested that the thread be moved to front page to now, the following threads have hit the front page;

"Gay guy beaten and arrested in Ogun state"

"Amosun launches 150 cabs in Ogun state"

"My Affair with Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of COZA"

"Firm introduces refined garri"

among others.

It is on this note that I ask; IS Nairaland becoming a play ground?

Seun, Mukina, OAM4J, Afam4eva and Sexkillz, why is this all important thread not on the front page?

https://www.nairaland.com/1407845/truth-nigeria-nigerians-british-expat

This thread doesn't only need to be on the front page but needs to be made sticky for st least a week for proper reflection by the youths who are our leaders of tomorrow and are in the majority on Nairaland.

PoliticsRe: An Expatriate's Indepth Analysis Of Corruption In Nigeria by jamesibor(op): 8:17am On Aug 23, 2013
ono: @james_ibor,
That's the ''class'' distinction and 'degree'' thing the British expat explained from the start of his article. It's not like the corruption plague is not rampant in other places of the world. But the one in Nigeria is UNIQUE. It's a SPECIAL kind, and like X-Imhotep rightly pointed out, it's in OUR genetic make up. Corruption par excellence.

I have seen that many folks on this board can read articles, and reading they sure do very well - like my little 6-year old girl. But when it comes to comprehension, it's a different kettle of fish altogether. Many Nigerian ''readers'' can hardly comprehend what's been read. It has degenerated to that level. Yes. So so sad.
Yea. Another quote from the article

james_ibor: "It is the degree, or extent, of corruption which makes Russia different from the UK, not the form. Understanding this concept is important in describing Nigeria."
and,

james_ibor: "As I said before, you’ll find such practices everywhere, but to nowhere near the extent found in Nigeria."
PoliticsRe: An Expatriate's Indepth Analysis Of Corruption In Nigeria by jamesibor(op): 7:52am On Aug 23, 2013
saxywale: It's because we no longer see bribery as corruption.
Hardly you would even see a multinational company(even the one the expat works for) in Nigeria that is not also corrupt. They pay honorariums and send gifts(another term for bribery) to get approvals, win contracts, get licenses e.t.c The oyinbo expert must be aware of this as well.....but he's making his cool cash and knows the system very very well.
He probably lives in banana island, has burtlers, has escorts and soldiers to protect him. Who doesn't enjoy living like a king.
If you read the complete article you should have read this part as well

james_ibor: "The police chief of a sizeable Thai resort town has his fingers in many pies, but he’s not interested in shaking down street vendors.  His minions might in order to supplement their salaries, but generally once the boss has his cut of most of the action, he’s not interested in sweeping up every last baht.  As a result, commerce can continue relatively unmolested.  The same is roughly true amongst the Sheikhs of the Middle East.  Bung the Crown Prince a few million for the contract, and he’ll allow the project activities to go ahead pretty freely.  He’s not interested in making an extra $10k by insisting you hire his brother’s lorry fleet to transport the gravel.  Such restraint may also be practical: the dodgy official in the UK isn’t going to be interested taking pennies if he risks getting fired or going to jail, he’ll have a minimum price he’ll work for.

But Nigeria has the same problem I saw in Russia: an almost pathological insistence of securing for yourself 100% of everything that is available, and not a kopek or kobo less.  I have observed before that Russians would rather have 100% of nothing than 50% of something, and the same is true – but on a far greater scale – in Nigeria"
PoliticsRe: An Expatriate's Indepth Analysis Of Corruption In Nigeria by jamesibor(op): 7:43am On Aug 23, 2013
99cent: I think people like YOU are one of the problems of the country.
Nigeria is corrupt everyone knows that. I'm only asking you how another "corrupt nigeria" article will change the country. answer d question.
this not the first time oyibo god man has declared Nigeria to be corrupt. is it?

if you have any critical thinking skills or sense you will see that even the oyinbo guy himself said he will stay in Nigeria (he's most likely making a LOT of cool cash to do so) and he will survive comfortably because he knows the system and can play the game. hahahahahahahah that is the KEY to the whole article right there that nobody is talking about.

He has chosen to participate in the corruption in order for him to stay in Nigeria and continue making money as an expat in the oil and gas industry. since he is NOT nigerian and corruption is a "Nigerian" thing, he can comfortably participate in corruption and blame it on Nigerians because corruption is inherently a Nigeria characteristic.
It's very obvious by the highlighted that you didn't read the article, so there's no point arguing with you on an article where if you cared enough to read the first and last paragraphs, you wouldn't have made such blunder.

ba7man: If there was a way this post could be summarized without affecting the key message, it deserves to be on FP. All Nigerians need to read this.

This is a neutral point of view and its also the truth. The truth is always bitter but its acceptance leads to improvement.
Summarising it will not only make the article less interesting but also take away some salient points and messages. Every paragraph seem to carry a specific message.
