Politics › El-Rufai: Power Sector Gulped N1.7 Trillion In 3 Years by jarawa(op): 11:47pm On Jan 23, 2020
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state on Thursday said Nigeria’s power sector has gulped a sum of N1.7trillion in the last three years. The governor disclosed this at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while briefing journalists on the outcome of National Economic Council (NEC) meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He said the situation of the power sector is a national emergency that requires all hands to be put on deck to interrogate why the sector is not working for the overall progress and benefit of Nigerians.

The governor, who gave an update on the two Committees constituted by NEC on the “Review of the Ownership Structure of Distribution Companies”, said, the solutions to the nation’s problematic power sector might be painful because the government could not continue to finance a sector that had gulped N1.7 trn without much progress. He said the NEC approved the proposal to co-opt Association of Electricity Distribution Companies in Nigeria and Association of Electricity Generation Companies of Nigeria as members of the committee, adding that they expected memoranda from members of the public to proffer final solution to the electricity problem.

“The National Economic Council appointed two committees last year, I was privileged to chair and we brought a progress report to the council. “We all agreed that the electricity supply industry is broken and the situation of the power sector is a national emergency that requires all hands to be put on deck to interrogate why the sector is not working for the overall progress and benefit of Nigerians.

“There is the will on the part of the committee members to really go into the root of the problems and speak to ourselves in an honest national conversation and find a way to fix this sector because this country will never make progress, will never create jobs until we industrialize with a functioning electricity sector,” he said. Speaking further, El-Rufai added: “There are other issues. The entire sector is broken, the tariff is an issue, the way the privatization was done is an issue to many. So, there are many issues. What we have agreed on is that there are fundamental problems in the electricity supply industry.

“The federal government has supported the electricity sector with N1.7 trillion in the last three years and this is not sustainable. So, solutions must be found, those solutions are not going to be nice, they may be painful but the only way to solve the structural problems in the industry is to take some very difficult decisions.”

Politics › Malabu: EFCC Failure To Serve Charges Stalls Adoke, Others’ Arraignment by jarawa(op): 6:41am On Jan 23, 2020
The arraignment of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke and his co-defendants accused of fraud in respect of Malabu Oil scam was yesterday stalled at an FCT High Court in Gwagwalada. This was due to the failure of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to serve all the defendants with the charge sheet in the alleged fraudulent activities in the $1.1b Malabu oil deal.

EFCC’s lead counsel, Bala Sanga, said the commission had not served the second defendant, Aliyu Abubakar, because he had been on the run and was only arrested Wednesday morning.

He said the commission wanted to ensure that Aliyu’s presence in court would be ascertained before others would be served, noting his surprise to see the lawyers to the defendants in court.

However, Aliyu’s lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), objected to the prosecution’s claim that his client was on the run, saying his client voluntarily appeared in court. Adoke’s lawyers, Paul Erokoro (SAN) and Mike Ozekhome (SAN) said the EFCC had refused to serve the 42-count charge on their client despite that he had been in the agency’s custody since December 19, 2020.

While six of the seven defendants were represented by lawyers in court, the fourth defendant, Malabu Oil and Gas Limited was not represented by a lawyer; howbeit, represented by one of its officials, who told the court that the firm had not been served.

Kutigi adjourned the hearing to today.

Crime › Akwa Ibom: Two Burnt To Death For Robbing Pregnant Woman by jarawa(op): 9:43pm On Jan 22, 2020
Two suspected armed robbers have been burnt to death after robbing a pregnant woman at the Abak Road Boulevard, in Uyo local government area of Akwa Ibom state. A witness who preferred to be unnamed said about four robbers surrounded the woman when she got down from a motorbike at about 9pm on Tuesday night. According to him, the motorcyclist drove off after dropping his passanger but was forced to turn back on hearing screams from the pregnant woman.

He stated that on sighting the motorcyclist, two of the robbers fled the scene after successfully dispossessing the lady of her valuables. He, however, said the other two robbers were not fortunate as the motorcyclist immediately alerted nearby residents, who engaged in a battle with the hoodlums.

He said they were able to rescue the woman adding that she sustained a severe hand injury in the process. “Luck ran out of two of them when they were overpowered by many men who beat, stoned them with building blocks and locked them up in the same tunnel and set them ablaze,” he said.

A resident of the area, Mrs Arit Archibong lamented that the boulevard area has become a den of criminals for some years now. She added that about four rape cases were reported within the tunnel in December 2019, blaming the crime on power blackout and lack of security in the area.

Police spokesman in the state, Odiko Macdon, confirmed the incident but frowned at the jungle justice meted out to the hoodlums, noting that such act has no place in law. “It is unfortunate that they were already set ablaze before we got there.

Jungle justice has no place in the law. Every accused is innocent until proven guilty by the law. “We have liaised with the state waste management authority to evacuate the remains while investigations are ongoing to unravel those behind the act,” he said.

Politics › Amnesty International Reacts To Killing Of Rev Andimi By Terrorists by jarawa(op): 4:53pm On Jan 21, 2020
Amnesty International has condemned the killing of Reverend Lawan Andimi by Boko Haram terrorists, saying the situation “is appalling.” Responding to the murder of the cleric by Boko Haram, Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, in a statement said: “Amnesty International is appalled by reports that Reverend Lawan Andimi, the chairman of a local chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), was killed by Boko Haram yesterday. “With this horrific murder, and an increasing number of attacks in recent weeks, Boko Haram has again shown its brazen disregard for the sanctity of life.

These deplorable crimes must not go unpunished. “It is appalling that Boko Haram followed up the killing of Rev. Lawan Andimi on Monday with an attack on his village – in Chibok local government Borno state. Amnesty International, reminded the terrorists that targeting civilians is a crime under international law.

“Boko Haram must immediately stop its attacks on civilians. All those responsible for war crimes and other human rights violations and abuses in Nigeria must be brought to justice in a fair trial.” It called on the Nigerian authorities to re-double their efforts to rescue the hundreds of civilians still detained by Boko Haram. Since December last year, Boko Haram has been escalating attacks on civilians, commuters, infrastructure and humanitarian facilities across northeast.

Reverend Andimi was abducted by Boko Haram when they attacked Michika in Adamawa State northeast Nigeria on 3 January 2020 during new year celebrations. Initially, he was declared missing but he later appeared in a video released by Boko Haram on 5 January, in which he pleaded with authorities to secure his release. Michaka has been repeatedly attacked by Boko Haram.

Health › New China Virus: 10 Things You Need To Know by jarawa(op): 1:52pm On Jan 21, 2020
Over the weekend, the number of people infected with a new virus in China has tripled. As at Tuesday morning, four persons have already died from the virus while over 200 are now infected.

The outbreak of this coronavirus has spread from Wuhan to other major cities. But what exactly is this new virus and how easy is it to contract?

Here are few things you need to know about the virus:

1. At the moment, there is no vaccine that can protect people against this type of coronavirus. It is a new strain that hasn’t been seen in humans before, which means doctors still have lots to learn about it.
2. Based on currently available information, the World Health Organization has not recommend any restrictions on travel or trade as a result of outbreak of the virus.
3. The first human cases were identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019. There have not been any other suspected human cases reported prior to this.
4. Given the type of virus, the incubation period (how long it takes for symptoms to appear after catching the infection) is days, rather than weeks.
5. It is not yet known how or when the virus became infectious to people. 6. Experts believe the first cases were transmitted by an animal.
7. Authorities have confirmed that it can be passed from person-to-person.
8. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe disease. It’s not yet clear how bad this new coronavirus is.
9. It is not yet known how the virus was transmitted. Other coronaviruses, such as Sars and Mers, came from cats and camels respectively.
10. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.

Politics › I Won’t Reopen Borders Now — Buhari Says In London by jarawa(op): 7:06am On Jan 21, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari says reopening of the land borders will not happen until the final report of a committee set up on the matter is submitted and considered. He said this yesterday while holding a bilateral meeting in London at the sidelines of UK-Africa Investment Summit 2020 with President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana.

Buhari said the partial closure of Nigeria’s borders was not caused solely because food products, particularly rice, were being smuggled into Nigeria; but also because arms and ammunition as well as hard drugs were being ferried into Nigeria.

He said he could not open his eyes and watch youths being destroyed through cheap hard drugs, and compromised security caused by unbridled influx of small arms. “When most of the vehicles carrying rice and other food products through our land borders are intercepted, you find cheap hard drugs, and small arms, under the food products.

This has terrible consequences for any country.” He said it was regrettable that the partial border closure was having “negative economic impact on our neighbours,” but added that “we cannot leave our country, particularly the youths, endangered.” The president said the Sahel region was awash with small arms accounting for severe security challenges in Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso, Niger and Nigeria.

“We are in fact the biggest victims. We will get things sorted out. Our farmers, especially those who grow rice, now have a market, and are happy, and we are also concerned about hard drugs and weapons. Once the committee comes up with its recommendations, we will sit and consider them,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo, while showing understanding of the need for Nigeria to protect her citizens, pleaded for “an expedited process, because the Nigerian market is significant for certain categories of business people in Ghana.”

Politics › Fani-kayode To FG: No Going Back On Amotekun by jarawa(op): 10:03pm On Jan 19, 2020
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has said the South West will not succumb to the federal government’s decision to stop the region from operating a security outfit, codenamed ‘Operation Amotekun’ to guarantee the security of lives and property in Yoruba land.

Chief Fani-Kayode, who spoke with newsmen on Sunday, in Abuja, said Amotekun was a regional initiative aimed at safeguarding the people in the South West from external forces, adding that no threat or intimidation of any kind from any quarters would stop the project. He said the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami’s constitutional interpretation that the move was illegal was just his personal opinion.

He asked the federal government to explain why there is Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in the North East and Sharia Police in the North West, adding that the South West leaders had resolved to stop the incessant bloodletting, raping and killing of innocent people in the region by marauders. “Anybody that feels that they don’t have to support the people of the South West is mistake. And anybody that believes that we can be in anyway intimidated by stepping down and saying we will not protect our people from those killing is mistaken.

“There is no going back and it is something we have firmly resolved about. We speak as one, we stand as one, we are solidly behind the governors. Every group in the South West is behind the governors. It is across party line.

“Whether you are PDP or APC, it doesn’t matter. The fact remains that those of us that claim to be the leaders in the South West have taken a decision. We will protect our people no matter what it takes, no matter what it cost,” he said. On federal government’s declaration of Amotekun as illegal, the former minister said, “That is just an opinion by the FG, by the Attorney General. He is a man like you and I.

He is entitled to his own opinion. I have been in government for many years and I know that government officials often say things that are often meaningless; that have no substance or basis. “So our opinion is different. In any case, whatever he says, whatever court says we have the right to self-defence.

People are being slaughtered. The leader of Afenifere’s daughter was slaughtered, Baba Olu Falae’s farm raided, he was kidnapped and beaten like a dog, he was insulted. “Thousands of our people are being slaughtered in the South West and somebody will come and tell us that his interpretation of the constitution is that we don’t have the right to self-defence.”

Politics › FG Disburses N55.3bn To Youths, Poor Persons In 6yrs by jarawa(op): 7:58am On Jan 16, 2020
The Federal Government has disbursed $155 million (about N55.3 billion) out of the $300m World Bank funded support to youth empowerment and poverty alleviation in Nigeria since when it was launched in 2013. The World Bank earmarked the $300m to support the Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) to help Nigeria reduce poverty and to increase opportunity for youth employment and social service delivery.

The acting National Coordinator of YESSO, Hajiya Hajara Sami, told newsmen yesterday in Abuja that about $155m has been disbursed to over 500,000 beneficiaries across 16 states. She said, “The programme is a package of $300m the Infrastructure Development Agency (IDA) out of which, because the end date is fast approaching and we needed to disburse quickly there was a restructuring. So far, we have expended about $155m.”

Hajara who spoke on the sidelines of the “social protection practitioners and academic dialogue” in Abuja, said stakeholders are exploring opportunities of extending the programme when it reaches closure in June. They also suggest that a new programme be launched to deliver more positive impacts on the youths and vulnerable Nigerians.

Hajara said at least 80 percent of the 500,000 beneficiaries are still on the programme. “We have public welfare that deploys beneficiaries to labour intensive activities and they are paid N7,500 every month. We also have skills for jobs driven by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) and they are paid N7,500 every month. “The last is the targeted grant transfer to cushion effect in the Northeast.

We have a comprehensive data base of all Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast. Later we added special grant transfer targeted at the physically challenged and they are given N20,000 every quarter,” she explained. The National Coordinator, Community and Social Development Projects (CSDP), Mr. Abdulkareem Obaje, said just like YESSO, the CSDP is ending by June 2020.

“These two projects are critical in lifting Nigerians out of poverty and we are going for a successor project from June 2020. So this dialogue is to take a critical look at the challenges and successes and how the successor programme can make it even better” he noted. In her remarks, Mrs. Maryam Uwais, the Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments said she is confident the dialogue will propose solutions that will place the strengthening of the social protection system in Nigeria in the right direction.

“As we keenly await the outcome of these social protection practitioners and academics dialogue, I am hopeful that it will build upon the already existing efforts, partnerships, and provide a foundation to generate evidence about poverty in Nigeria, the impact of current social protection programming and remaining gaps,” she noted.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said the Federal Government would engage more qualified teachers to increase the teacher-to-pupil ratio in the country. Buhari, according to a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, said this at the State House in Abuja while receiving the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers led by the union’s national president, Nasir Idris.

“We’ve created a dedicated platform under the National Social Investment Programme called N-Power Teach, which engages qualified graduates to man the gaps of basic education delivery in Nigeria.

“The aim of this, and many other Government programmes, is to increase the teacher-student ratio at the primary school level thereby enhancing the quality of students moving to secondary schools.”

Politics › Daily Trust 2019 African Of The Year Arrives Nigeria by jarawa(op): 4:20pm On Jan 14, 2020
*says “I have always longed to visit Nigeria”

A South African, Rosie Mashale, popularly known as Mama Rosie and founder of Baphumelele Children’s Centre, who emerged winner of the 2019 Daily Trust African of the Year award has arrived Nigeria. She arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Tuesday at about 11:52am onboard Ethiopian Airline flight number ETH911 operated with an Airbus A350-941. However, it took her up until 1:30pm to get through immigration clearance, collect her luggage and access the car park where a second team of Daily Trust delegation were waiting to receive her.

The visibly excited Mama Rosie told our correspondent that it’s her first time in Nigeria and was grateful to the Daily Trust for the opportunity. She also said she’s looking forward to knowing Nigeria more as she’s always longed to visit. “This is my first time in Nigeria. I am excited to be here, definitely. I’m looking forward to see the country really. All along, I have been longing to come to Nigeria,” she said.

Recall Mama Mama Rosie was announced winner, the Daily Trust African of the Year Award, the most prestigious award by a newspaper in Africa, in November 2019. The decision was done by celebral seven-member award selection committee led by the former President of Botswana, Festus Mogae. She won the award based on her breathtaking humanitarian services that is seeing her save thousands of HIV-infected children who have been abandoned.

“Her continuous courage and dedication to save the lives of thousands of abandoned children affected by HIV and AIDS” earned her the award, the immediate-past Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust, Mannir Dan-Ali had said in a statement.

The abandoned children are mostly known as ‘children-no-one-wants.’ HIV and AIDS are endemic in South Africa, infecting and killing hundreds of people, leaving babies as orphans, many of them also infected.

In 1989, when Mama Rosie moved to Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s poorest townships, as a teacher there where she saw children scrounging for food in a garbage dump, and brought them into her home to feed them. This was the start of a remarkable programme that has been sustained since then and has now fetch her an Iconic pan-African award.

Crime › Wanted Lagos Cult Leader, One Other Arrested For Robbery by jarawa(op): 6:30am On Jan 14, 2020
The police in Lagos said they have arrested a suspected secret cult leader, Bamidele Moses, alias Badoo, who they alleged had been terrorising residents of the Bariga area and its environs. The arrest of Moses, who was said to have been on the police wanted list for many months allegedly for multiple murders and robbery, followed the earlier arrest of one of his gang members, Sodiq Olowolayemo, 23, with whom he had allegedly conspired to rob a man, Jude Saka, of his Bajaj motorcycle on December 8, 2019.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said that on November 1, 2019, following information received about the activities of some suspected cultists in the Bariga area, the police began investigation on the movement of the gang. Elkana added that the police received another piece of information last Friday that the gang was planning to launch an attack in Ilaje, Bariga.

The police spokesman said that based on the strength of the information, detectives from the Bariga police station moved to Ilaje, Bariga, where they arrested Sodiq, a resident of No. 10, Onenaya Street, Bariga. The suspect was said to have confessed that he conspired with Moses to rob Saka of his Bajaj motorcycle. “The suspects have been on the police wanted list for series of traffic robberies and cult violent attacks in Bariga,” Elkana said.

Politics › Tension In Bauchi, Sokoto, Imo As Supreme Court Resumes Hearing Today by jarawa(op): 5:53am On Jan 14, 2020
... Kano, Adamawa, Benue, Plateau calm

Tension is high in Bauchi, Sokoto and Imo states ahead of today’s resumption of hearing of appeals challenging elections of seven governors at the Supreme Court. The seven outstanding governorship appeals before the apex court include the elections of governors Umar Ganduje (Kano); Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto); Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa); Bala Mohammed (Bauchi); Samuel Ortom (Benue); and Simon Lalong (Plateau).

Governor Ganduje’s election is being challenged by Abba Kabiru Yusuf (PDP) who is contending that he was winning the election in majority of the local governments in Kano before it was declared inconclusive and a rerun ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He also alleged widespread irregularities in the March 23 rerun election in the state. APC’s Ahmed Aliyu is challenging the election of Governor Aminu Tambuwal.

He is alleging over voting and other irregularities in the election. Aliyu polled 511,661 votes against 512,002 votes by Tambuwal after conclusion of collation in the rerun. Governor Emeka Ihedioha’s election is being challenged by the APC candidate, Hope Uzodimma, the Action Alliance (AA) candidate, Uche Nwosu and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Ifeanyi Ararume.

Although the allegations of irregularities in the election by the AA and APGA against Ihedioha were dismissed by the Court of Appeal, there was a dissenting judgment in favour of Uzodimma’s appeal. CJN forced to adjourn hearing At the hearing of the Kano governorship appeal yesterday, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, retired to his chambers after complaining about the congestion in the court hall. Supporters of governors of Kano, Sokoto, Bauchi, Adamawa, Imo, Benue and Plateau states had thronged the court premises as early as 6am. Director of Litigation of the Supreme Court, Ibrahim Gold asked persons who had no serious business in the court room to leave.

The CJN was again forced to stand down and eventually adjourned the proceedings over the ill-health of one of the justices on the panel, Justice John Inyang Okoro. Other justices on the seven-member panel were Sylvester Ngwuta, Olukayode Ariwoola, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Amiru Sanusi and Uwani Musa Aba-Aji.

Bauchi

The battle for the soul of Bauchi State erupted at the court premises when persons believed to be supporters of Governor Bala Muhammad pelted the convoy of the former governor, Mohammed Abubakar, with water bottles after he came out of the court and raised his hands in a sign of ‘four plus four’. Reports show there is anxiety in the state. Meanwhile, former governor Abubakar of the APC has described the attack as a “last minute ditch effort” by Governor Mohammed to influence the outcome of the governorship tussle before the Supreme Court of Justice.”

In a statement by his media aide, Ali M. Ali, the former governor called on his supporters to remain calm to what he called “resort to uncivilised conduct from supporters. Such shameful conduct is reflective of the violent behaviour of their benefactor.” But the state Commissioner of Information and Communication, Dr Ladan Salihu, denied the allegations, saying he must have been pelted by his own supporters who felt shortchanged by his administration and his hand sign of ‘4+4’, which is an attempt to return to office.

Sokoto

In anticipation of the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment in the appeal by the APC governorship candidate, Ahmed Aliyu, challenging the election of Governor Tambuwal, the police have beefed up security in the state. The adjournment of the appeals on Monday stirred more speculations in the state that the move is to enable the appellants curry favour from the judiciary. But Governor Tambuwal, through his media adviser, Muhammad Bello, urged his supporters and people of the state to exercise patience following the adjournment of the case.
