Four months after their inauguration, President Muhammadu Buhari will today meet members of his economic team amid a myriad of economic challenges. Among other issues, the recent economic decisions by the government, particularly the border closure policy and implementation of the Finance Act 2020 as it relates to the hike of the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 7.5% continue to take a huge toll on the citizenry.https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/tough-issues-as-buhari-meets-economic-team-today.html

The district of Gayari in Gummi local government area of Zamfara state, who was abducted by gunmen last Friday, has regained freedom, Daily Trust has learnt. A source told our correspondent that the district head was released by the gunmen after days of painstaking negotiations on what should be paid as ransom before his eventual release. “They demanded for N40million; later they beat it down to N16million and finally N5million was paid as ransom before they released him. However, they held on to his son demanding for delivery of two new brand motorbikes before they could release the son of the district head,” he said. The spokesman of the state police command, SP Muhammad Shehu, confirmed the development to our reporter, but however kept mute on whether ransom was paid or not. The district head, Alhaji Hassan Muhammad Gayari, was last Friday kidnapped by suspected bandits in his residence in Gayari town of Gummi local government area of the state along side his son. About 100 freed Chibok girls studying at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) on Wednesday staged a protest over alleged stringent feeding policies in the school. The girls, who reportedly became angry after officials confiscated food items banned from the hostel including soft drinks and snacks, started the agitation on Tuesday at night before they packed their luggage and attempted to leave the campus on Wednesday. There was commotion at the campus gate in the morning after security refused to allow them exit until the girls were persuaded to return to their hostels following a meeting with officials. The federal government has awarded scholarship to freed Chibok girls into a foundation programme at the AUN since their release following negotiation with Boko Haram insurgents. signed by the university’s Vice President, University Relations, Abba Tahir explained that the protest had ended following a meeting between the management and the protesting students aimed at resolving the matter. “This morning, we are hosting a meeting with our New Foundation School (NFS) students from Chibok on ways of improving their welfare and giving them the unique AUN campus experience we promised their sponsors, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs”, the statement said “This meeting was prompted by a misunderstanding earlier in the morning between a section of the girls and some of their supervisors over the interpretation of policies by the management of NFS aimed at further consolidating their personal comfort and security,” it added. The release noted the AUN’s resolve to achieve the goals of the foundation programme which focused on “personal healing, educational development, and gradual community reintegration for the Chibok school girls”. The Presidency has backed the protests organsed by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the killing of its chapter chairman in Adamawa State, Pastor Lawan Andimi, by Boko Haram. Presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, in a statement Tuesday, said the actions of CAN in recent days represented the peaceful right of all Nigerians to protest and express their views on matters of religion, ethics, politics and society. Shehu, who said the origination of their protests was the “shocking, unacceptable death” of Pastor Andimi at the hands of Boko Haram, stated that President Buhari felt their pain, and that of his family, for his loss. He said the President and every member of his administration, both Christian and Muslim, believed that “all life is sacred” as contained in CAN’s placards. He said without citizen involvement, there is no miracle with which less than half-a-million policemen can effectively protect a population of 200 million, adding that CAN is right to arouse popular consciousness to this duty to the state. The statement read in part: “Whether you are Christian or Muslim, all Nigerians and their beliefs must be respected. The duty of all of us is to uphold the rights of others to worship according to their faith – and to respect the rights of each other to do so freely in the spirit of brotherhood and respect – and without interference. “This means, however, that we must stop false claims that only serve to divide one community against the other. There is no place in Nigeria for those who politicise religion. This is the President’s message to both Muslim and Christian communities alike. “One more thing is this: it is the added need for citizen-consciousness to stand up for nation. Nigerians, only Nigerians can defend their nation against these abhorrent killings and all sorts of crimes worrying us as a nation. “From the prayers and advocacy by CAN, citizens need to take an important lesson, which is, that our people must rally around the flag. Together, they rise to defeat the enemy and defend the state. In Nigeria, some groups rally against the government instead of the enemy. This is not right. It has the effect of playing into the hands of the enemy of the state. “We will not defeat the terrorists, nor speed the return for those citizens, young and old taken by them by division in our own ranks. To pull apart is to play into the hands of the terrorists: this is what they want.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/presidency-backs-cans-protests-over-insecurity-pastor-andimis-killing.html |

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ilorin Zonal Office has arrested a senior official of the Kwara State Ministry of Finance, Mrs Olajumoke Rhoda Oyawoye for allegedly defrauding job seekers under the guise of helping them to get job in both federal and state employments. Oyawoye, a level 14 Kwara State civil servant, allegedly received various sums of money amounting to about N3million from her victims, who were seeking jobs and issued them fake offer of appointments. However, trouble reportedly started when two separate petitioners, Solomon Moronfoye and Salako Olalekan Abdulgafar approached Ilorin Zonal Office of EFCC alleging that Mrs Oyawoye claimed she had been helping people to secure employments to federal parastatals and state civil service. Moronfoye said, “I met her on the 27th April, 2018 at my church in Offa, she informed me and other church members that she used to help people get employment to Kwara State Civil Service Commission and Federal Government Parastatals, she told me that the money for the state employments is N250,000 per slot while the one for federal government parastatals is for N350,000.” He said the suspect collected N2 million from him and promised that the applicants have already been employed. He added that in September, 2018, he discovered that all what the suspect said was false and the people she collected money from through him were pestering him to return their money but she kept giving excuses. According to the EFCC, items recovered in her apartment include Curriculum Vitae (CVs) of her victims, offer letters of appointment of both the Kwara State Civil Service Commission and federal government parastatals, among others. The anti graft agency said the suspect would soon be charged to court upon the conclusion of its investigation. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said claims by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), that President Muhammadu Buhari is winning the war against insecurity is misleading and mere propaganda. The All Progressives Congress yesterday said Nigerians voted President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and 2019 to, among other things, win the war against terrorism and generally secure the country. The APC, however, stated that despite the opportunistic and pocket of attacks on some soft targets, Buhari’s administration’s resolve to degrade Boko Haram “is not in doubt.” APC Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement yesterday, asked Nigerians to stop attaching Boko Haram with any religion, saying the sect is neither a Muslim nor Christian group, but a common enemy. He also said that “currently, no inch of Nigeria’s territory is under the control of Boko Haram” as bandits, kidnappers and other criminal camps were being cleared with the criminals suffering heavy casualties on a daily basis. He said the armed forces were now better equipped with their welfare prioritised; “previous insurgency-ravaged communities are being rehabilitated and resettled; gone are those days when attacks particularly on the country’s capital city of Abuja and other parts of the country were routine.” He said the terrorists were attempting to stoke religious sensitivities by pitching Christians and Muslims against another “through their recent pattern of cowardly attacks. “We must not fall for this divisive ploy. In our respective spaces, we should understand that these violent extremists are our common enemies, and are blind to religious and political affiliation and socio-economic status.” He said the nation’s leaders and all others in positions of influence and authority must show leadership and temperance in their utterances and actions as doing otherwise would be acting the scripts and playing into the hands of “these fanatics seeking to divide us and pitch us against each other.” He stated: “Recently, public commentaries on the activities of Boko Haram and bandits, as well as other forms of criminality in the country is assuming a dangerous ethno-religious slant, unfortunately influenced by insensitive and selfish partisan narratives by short-sighted groups and individuals. This is a red flag that must be checked for our collective well-being. “Understandably, the aftermath of an attack will trigger inflamed responses particularly from those affected. We however have a duty to rise above simplistic narratives and politically-tainted criticisms which are oftentimes misplaced and counterproductive.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/nigerians-elected-buhari-to-end-terrorism-apc.html |
Exposing some vital information about personal life on social media is very dangerous and it threatens security of lives and property, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Pantami, has said. Pantami, who spoke weekend as a guest lecturer in Federal University of Technology, Minna during 29th convocation lecture, wondered why some Nigerians post pictures of what they eat, where they live, where they work and some other vital information about their personal life on social media. Speaking on the convocation lecture titled: “Datafication of Society: Economic and Security Issues in Producing and Using Public and Private Data in Nigeria”, the minister said: “Some people when you visit their social media platform for one week, you’ll be able to know their State. You’ll be able to know where they live in Niger state or in Abuja. You will be able to know where they traveled. You will be able to know the mosque or church they attend every week. “With this, you will be able to know the total number of their children, you will be able to know where they work. In fact, you will be able to see the number of their ticket while traveling from Abuja to Lagos. “Whatever you need, you will get it there. Some of them go to the extent of even posting their ID card, or driver’s license, or even their data page for passports. Why? Because we don’t respect our personal data”, he said. According to him, there are many implications attached to such practice as “experts” use such revelation for evil. “Whenever you collect data, that data is very important and that is why even data about your personal life, should something that is important to you, but today we don’t understand that. “Today, there are so many experts in the world, so many underground experts in the world that you don’t even need to tell them about. You don’t need to give them any data. Tell them that I need more information about this guy. They will go through his Twitter, through his Facebook, identify his movement, what he has been doing, where he works. With this, within a day or 24 hours, they will produce a comprehensive report about that personality for you because we don’t have anything that is hidden. Whatever we do, it is there. “Some people reach the external people posting the picture of their lunch or dinner on social media. It is very common, sometimes, exposing our kids that are not up to five years of age to the dangers of this life. You will see him snapping picture with his kids and posting on social media without even knowing the implication,” he said. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said Nigeria would work to fix security lapses that led to the United States restriction on immigration from Nigeria, presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said in a statement yesterday. In a bid to have “productive relations” between Nigeria and the United States, Buhari said he had appointed a minister to lead a committee to study and address the new United States visa requirements. “Nigeria remains committed to maintaining productive relations with the United States and its international allies, especially on matters of global security,” Adesina said. He said Buhari had established a committee headed by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, to study and address the updated requirements. Adesina said the committee would work with the United States government, INTERPOL and other stakeholders to ensure that all updates are properly implemented. He expressed the Nigerian government’s commitment to maintaining productive relations with the United States, especially on global security. On Friday, the United States Department of Homeland Security announced temporary travel restrictions on six countries including Nigeria. It said the United States would suspend the issuance of visas that can lead to permanent residency for nationals of Nigeria, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, and Myanmar. For Nigeria, the restriction is the suspension of the issuance of ‘immigrant visas’ to Nigerian passport holders only. The suspension comes into effect on February 21, 2020, and does not apply to other U.S visas such as those for official, business, tourism and student travel. Citizens from Eritrea, Sudan, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar are also barred from certain types of US visas. People from these countries will, however, still be able to visit the US as tourists. In 2018, the US issued more than 8,000 immigration visas to Nigerians, twice as many as all the other five nations combined. “These countries, for the most part, want to be helpful but for a variety of different reasons simply failed to meet those minimum requirements that we laid out,” acting Homeland Security Secretary, Chad Wolf, told reporters. He said officials would work with the countries on bolstering their security requirements to help remove them from the list. Mr. Wolf said non-immigrant visas given to people for temporary stays, including visitors, those doing business or people seeking medical treatment, would not be impacted by the new rules. US President Donald Trump first introduced a travel ban in 2017. It currently closes US borders to citizens from seven countries, most of them with Muslim majorities. It now restricts citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela and North Korea. While the government has suspended most immigrant and non-immigrant visas to applicants from those countries, exceptions are available for students and those with “significant contacts” in the US. Atiku, PDP react Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in a reaction, asked the US government not to implement the suspension on all Nigerians but target only government officials. Atiku in a statement yesterday by his Media Office said the policy on all Nigerians was sad, calling on President Donald Trump to consider adopting measures that individually target those in government who “have failed in their duties.” The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also said Nigerians should hold the Buhari Presidency and the APC responsible for the negative impact of the sanctions imposed on the country. The PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan described the sanction as another huge misfortune allegedly brought by the Buhari Presidency and the APC which it said had continued to wreck the nation with its “compromised handling” of security issues, in addition to escalated bloodletting and human rights violation. They have been given too many opportunities to lead Nigeria right. But look where we are today? Since 1999, this country has been flailing about, lurching from one disaster to another mediocrity. Today, that mediocrity, under achievement and underperformance defines an otherwise great nation, Nigeria. We have spent untold trillions trying to fix electricity, roads and other mundane issues that other countries have since taken for granted. We have not been able to produce anything from scratch as a people. Between these two parties, they wrecked the nation. Yet people who should keep quiet in remorse, having eaten the future of the children of Nigeria regularly mount the rostrum and lecture the rest of us! Look at education.https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/why-apc-and-pdp-must-be-deregistered-i.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has told the Presidency not to politicise or trivialise demands by Nigerians for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari as a response to his alleged failure to guarantee the security of lives and property in the country. The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, said the Presidency must accept the “apolitical verdict” which transcends ethnic, political and religious boundaries. It said Buhari had accepted his alleged failures when he said on Tuesday, that he was surprised at the deteriorating security challenges in the country. The PDP urged the “National Assembly to stand with Nigerians and resist any attempt that would make it succumb to any form of harassment, intimidation and innuendos from paid agents and cabal in the Presidency who have shown that the interest of ordinary Nigerians is not their priority.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/pdp-to-presidency-dont-politicise-security-situation.html |

Scientists in Australia have become the first to recreate the new coronavirus outside of China in what they have called a “significant breakthrough”. Doctors said the copy could be used as “control material” for testing and “will be a game changer for diagnosis”. That could involve an early-diagnosis test which could detect the virus in people who have not displayed symptoms.https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/coronavirus-cure-in-sight-as-australian-scientists-recreate-virus.html
