Go check the record of a certain Samuel Eto'o for that same year. He was 3rd best player in the world for that year.

I think 2013 is a huge opportunity for another Nigerian to win APotY award since 1999. No top African performer now. Eto'o and Drogba are out. Yaya is the major obstacle. If Mikel and Moses play well at Confederations cup, a Nigerian may clinch it.

JideTheBlogger: Victor Moses, if Chelsea can win Europa league+ FA cup
If he plays active part. You don't win POY award with sub role. That's why I fear Yaya may still clinch 2013 with his consistent performance at City, despite disappointing AFCON, where, inspite, he was still CIV's best performer with 2 goals.

Benni did well at 1998 Nations cup. He also did well in Porto. He is a fine striker.

Essien would have won APOY award if he wasn't unlucky enough to be playing in Eto'o's time. Yaya did not do more than Essien did 2004/6 to win APOY. Adebayor scored 30 goals for Arsenal (never mind the fact he lost more than twice scoring opportunities) and won APOY award.
Sports › Re: African Footballers That Never Won Apoty Award by Jarus(op): 8:42pm On Mar 08, 2013
Observation: all but Benni McCarthy are midfielders and defenders.

Also, all the winners from 1993 to date are strikers/forwards (Yekini 93, Weah 95, Kanu 96, Ikpeba 97, Kanu 99, Mboma 2000, Diouf 2001, Diouf 2002, Eto'o 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, Drogba 2006, Kanoute 2007, Adebayor 2008, Drogba 2009) , except Yaya Toure (2011, 2012) and probably Amuneke (94) and Hadji(98) who were attcking midfielders.

Telling us goals decide the game and people see you only if you score. A midfielder has to do 3 times more exceptionally a striker, a defender 5 times and a goal keeper 7 times before you can win award.

We have serious problem in this Nigeria, if supposedly educated people think an innocent article written by a well known oil and gas publisher (whose publication, Africa Oil & Gas report, is regarded as most authoritative in the industry), to correct a misinformation, is a paid agent playing a tribal card. We are in trouble in this country.

coolted: I DIFFER. The writer is playing same gallery we all know. Why hasnt he written THIS article before? HE has a lot to gain. IT IS ON RECORD NORTHERN LEADERS ARE MAJOR PLAYERS IN SS OIL BLOCKS producing or not
Why will he write the article? He wrote a rejoinder. Is rejoinder written without a trigger article? Somebody claims that 'northerners' own 83% of Nigeria's oil blocks, he replied, not because he is a northerner, but because he is an oil & gas journalist and knows much about the industry and want to save people from being miseducated.

thelastPope: Igbinedion has no oil block! Stop spewing trash. You were a baby in 1991 yet you knew that, lol. Lucky bailed his father out when he almost went bankrupt in the early 2000s. Of all his business, only his secondary school was doing well. Igbinedion has started and crashed so many businesses, we have lost count. He has absolutely no oil block. Blatant lie!
This is not an opinion for that matter, it is a fact, an event. Denying this is like denying Babangida was ever a President of Nigeria.

How on earth will someone be disputing what is announced on TV, reported in newspaper, well known by everybody literate enough to read newspaper in 1991.

Hear from Jubril Aminu, IBB's petroleum minister:

Among the top Nigerians we gave oil blocks were Adenuga, Arthur Eze, Igbinedion, Dantata, Mai Deribe, Lulu Briggs and Michael Ibru. Ibru actually was the first person I talked to on this matter. We gave them oil block and it became a status symbol. It became a question of: How can this man have oil block and I don’t have a block? Who is he? Instead of their Rolls Royce and their big palaces, now oil block became status symbol. I was enjoying the fun. They all came; we addressed them and we told them what we wanted. I remember saying to them: If only one of you is successful, my point would have been made. And I got the full support of President Babangida.

Sibrah: The 83% ownership of oil block still depends on the volume of oil being produced under Northerners owned oil blocks. The fact that the article here has named more southerner than Northerners doesn't prove or disprove anything except the provider of this article is implying his list contains all the owner of oil blocks in Nigeria.
He did not only name names, he analyses the production and activity. Read well.

Akinosho is an encyclopedia of O&G in Nigeria.

thelastPope: Hahahahahaha! You guys have been exposed! Give it up! It isn't really new to many of us. We have known for years. Even before 1999.

Imagine claiming that igbinedion and ibru own oil blocks. lol. Give it up guys. Paying a Yoruba guy to betray us southerners again won't work this time. He is on his own. We know the truth and that is why Saro Wiwa was killed. Saro Wiwa kept saying this till he was killed. That is why militancy started. It isn't news to us. It isn't only the oil blocks they have cornered. They cornered customs, army positions, PHCN and many others. People with little or no qualification were running major departments. Some with diploma in Islamic studies. If you ever worked in the ciil service, you will weep for Nigeria. The northern oligarchy ran Nigeria aground. Thanks to OBJ, he balanced the army. Thanks to GEJ now, he is normalizing the civil service. That is why you see them whining and attacking Deziani, the head of immigration, minister of aviation and the chief of army staff, accusing them of tribalism. lol. You guys will have to earn anymore respect from us. Simple!
This is nadir of ignorance. Even as a 10 year old boy in 1992, I knew Igbinedion and Ibru were part of the first indigenous guys IBB sold oil blocks to in 1991. You didn't even read the part where the author wrote that of all of them, only Adenuga is still producing today. Others have either sold them off or left them idle.

lacasa: by how much of a businessman you are.

When Jibril Aminu handed out oil prospecting blocks, in the first comprehensive effort “to encourage indigenous participation” in 1991, he gave blocks to companies owned by Folawiyo, Abiola, Adenuga, Udoji, Ibru, Igbinedion,(all Southerners) as much as he gave to enterprises set up by people like Saleh Jumbo and Mai Deribe.

Between 1991 and 1993, we suddenly had over 25 companies, that were Nigerian E&P companies and they took themselves so seriously that they set up an association they christened “Nigerian Association of Indigenous Petroleum Exploration Companies”. But what did these people do with the acreages? They were mostly clueless about how to progress things.

Out of that class of awardees, only Mike Adenuga created what you could really call an E&P company. He is the only one producing oil today, from his own block.

Akinosho, a petroleum geologist, former news reporter, and one-time community newspaper editor, is now publisher of the well-regarded African Oil+Gas Report

I hope those who say Adenuga is about Glo can read this. I have heard about Mike Adenuga far back 1991. People don't even know that he is an oil magnate, making billions even before Glo.

Yeah, but that's too far/early at this stage in my opinion. You appeal after you reach a deadlock. He hasn't even had any meeting the officers.

Another thing about Lagos is that petty thieving (snatching) tendency is as old as the city itself.

The patriach of our family (99 years this year) was telling me few days ago how his bicycle was stolen in Lagos in 1945. He parked outside, entered a shop, and before he came back the bicycle had disappeared. I wonder how that thief would feel, if he is still alive, looking back at what he did 70 years ago.

@OP very well said.

@Ajanlekoko you will always have my respect for being consistent and saying the hard truth that some us don't like to hear.

I remember vividly that 7 years ago, 2006, 2007 and old-time Nairalanders can bear me witness, it was possible for you to attend 2 Bank interviews in a week and also get recruited simply by gate-crashing at the venue of aptitude tests.
At that time, shortly before I completed my NYSC a friend of mine woke me up with a phone call on a saturday morning at 7am informing me to hurry up and get dressed to attend a bank aptitude test at 10am same day, when I asked him what bank was recruiting, he told me it was Unity bank...I just hissed, dropped the call and went back to sleep. (no offence to Unity Bankers by the way )
Agreed. 2004-2008 was a boom period (whether it was bubble that was destined to burst is another kettle of fish) for the Nigerian labour market. There was almost more demand than supply sef. Banks - nay financial services industry in general - were recruting almost on daily basis, with fat pay. People, especially qualified folks, were spoiled with choices. That was the period some of us entered the labour market, and probably wise enough not to resign after one year to Masters abroad as some of our mates did after earning fat pays for 1 year. I remember telling StanbicIBTC to hold on, refusing to go pick my offer letter, while waiting on Vetiva. I remember not hsowing up at Accenture tests invitations, asking KPMG to shift my interview date for me etc.

Things are no longer that. You hardly have options today. Even with my 4 years experience, I spent almost 1 year actively nosing for a move before one fell on my lap last year.

1992 - 2 months.
1993 - 5 months.
1994 - 5 months, all the way till January '95.
1996 - 6 months
2001 - 3 months
2003 - 6 or 7 months (i forget)
2007 (or 2009, not sure) - 6 months.

That is the one I can remember.
Omho, the bolded almost made me grow grey hair at home. Plus my school had another 5 months internal problem/strike, making me stay at home for 11 months altogether!

But that was the only major ASUU strike I experienced, others were 2-3 weeks warning strike. I lost 1 year, spent 5 years for what was supposed to take 4 years. But we thank God.

There are some things that are not clear here.

What type or types of tax is being assessed according to the letter? Is it income tax or VAT?

If it is income tax, is the business located in FCT? Otherwise, FIRS has no business taxing an enterprise's income. Their jurisdiction is only incorporated entities. State government of the site of the business is responsible for the collection of income tax of individuals, partnerships and enterprises.

If it is VAT, then it is FIRS' jurisdiction.

In any case, N70m is absolutely ridiculous for an entity that earns N8m as turnover. But since your friend's books are not assessible to them, they must have used deemed (guessed) turnover.

With a turnover of N8m, worst case scenario is a VAT of 5% on turnover, which comes to N400,000.

There are many issues associated with it, but obviously, someone just wanted to pull a fast one on you.

Don't report to higher authorities yet, call the guy on phone and tell him that you have handed it over to your lawyer to look into the issue. He will be scared.

Although it is highly unlikely that they come to shut down your business (in any case, no distrain can be carried out without court order), just to cover yourself you can also write to FIRS, attentioning Head of VAT (if it is VAT), seeking for more time to gather your records together and telling them the assessment covered period that pre-dated your business.

But obviously, from the situation, one hungry FIRS officer is just trying to milk you, even though you also have taxes to pay (which may even be higher than the tip he is asking for).

Please I presently work for a small consulting firm and I have been with them for approx. 3 years now but the problem is although PAYE tax is deducted from my salary every month I have never received a tax clearance from the company within these years. When i querried the Accountant he said the reason why they don't apply for individual staff tax clearnace is because what is being deducted from our salary as PAYE is very little compared to the actual amount. Please i would like your assistance in knowing my actual PAYE from the detail below because i want to ask the company to start deducting the actual PAYE and get me my tax clearnce.

Basic salary: 36,000.00
Housing allowance: 30,000.00
Medical allowance: 24,000.00
Dressing allowance: 15,000.00
Training allowance: 15,000.00
Total 120,000
Your actual PAYE, based on new Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) which took effect June 2012, is calculated thus:

GROSS ANNUAL PAY= 120,000*12 = 1,440,000
Less Reliefs & Allowances
- Pension 7.5% of Annual Basic, Housing & Transport = 792,000*7.5% = 59,400
- Consolidated Relief Allowance = 200,000+ 20%*1,440,000 = 488,000
NB: Monetised medical allowance is not accepted as a relief

TAXABLE PAY = Gross pay - Reliefs = 1,440,000 - 59,400 - 488,000 = 892,600

TAX

First 300,000 @ 7% = 21,000
Next 300,000 @ 11% = 33,000
Remainder 292,600 @ 15% = 43,890

TOTAL ANNUAL TAX = 97,890
Monthly Tax = 8,157.50

NOTE: I converted to annual, did the calculation in annualized figures, and reconverted to monthly, because I don't have time to be dividing by 12 at every stage. The relief and tax rates are stated in annual terms. It will result in same thing, except for months you earn extra income like christmas bonus, 13th month etc.

Meanwhile, your company is only postposing evil day. It can't escape the tax. When the authorities come and carry out audit, they will not only recover at actual rate, but also impose penalty and interest, which, together, can be up to 31%. For a small company, this can hit his P&L seriously in the year of audit, except he has been making provision.

TCC is just evidence that you have paid your taxes. It is issued in a year for taxes paid in previous year. You will notice from your payslip that a monthly deduction called PAYE is deducted from your salary. That is your monthly tax. It is remitted to state government of your state of residence on monthly basis. So the TCC is the evidence that you pay your taxes for the last 3 years (or less if you haven't earned taxable income for up to 3 years).

If you don't have it, there are some trasactions with state governments, especially Lagos, that you won't be able to do or forced to pay tax again at the point of having that issue with state government. In lagos, if you are caught for traffic offence, wants to process land documents, change car ownership officially etc, your tax clearance is required.

Ok. I now get you. Such manufacturer's product is either zero-rated (which according to the VAT Act can only be non-oil exports, goods purchased by diplomats or for philantropic activity) or exempt (oil exports, drugs etc) .

In the case of zero-rated, you can recover your input VAT (VAT you paid to the raw material supplier) by completing appropriate forms with FIRS and presenting evidence. They will however need to audit you to ascertian you genuinely suffered the VAT.

If exempt, you cannot recover the input VAT you suffered. You have lost if permanently and add it to your cost of production.
