See virus flying around in this thread:

Any CV. that doesn't contain your age and what you graduated with will end up in the dustbin. So you expect the employer to be finding out what you graduated with when he has more than enough CVs on his table? And you think it is for nothing that job adverts expressly set age limits on jobs?

I now know why some people are still jobless.
Politics › Man Accused Of Trespassing Into Presidential Villa Freed by Jarus(op): 1:20pm On Jul 01, 2011
A 29-year-old man accused of jumping a fence and trespassing into the Presidential Villa in Abuja was on Wednesday freed by an Abuja chief magistrate, after he told the court that his father sent him to greet President Goodluck Jonathan.
Trakiriowe Oyinmikbi, who hails from Patani Local Government Area, Delta State, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal trespass but told the court that his father, who was a one time president of the country in 1982, sent him on the mission to the villa.

Chief Magistrate Azubuike Okeagu, after listening to the accused person’s explanations, said his behavior during court proceedings showed that he is mentally deranged and consequently discharged him.

Prosecutor Philips Akogwu had earlier told the court that on June 26, one Sergeant Hamza Ahmed reported at Asokoro Police Station that the accused was arrested when he criminally trespassed into the presidential villa by jumping over a fence close to Gate 4.

He said that the accused could not give satisfactory accounts of his mission to the villa when interrogated and committed an offence contrary to Section 348 of the Penal Co

so how is your friend better than the Abati wey you dey castigate?
Get me right. I have not said I have a problem with him accepting the job. Spokesperson is a job reserved majorly for journalists and a journalist clinching one, to me, is not out of order. But the difference between Segun and Abati is, even prior to this becoming public knowledge, Abati had appeared compromised but still hiding the guise of public commentator. Add to that the Abuja land gate. But for Segun, nothing suggested he was doing some people's bidding before taking up the job. He was still his known self until he took up that job - a job you can't go against the interest, at least in public, of your principal.

let's give it to that man. he even rejected attorney eneral position by abacha as well as marwa's sallah ram gift.
Politics › Re: Reuben Abati To Replace Ima Niboro As The Vioce Of Gej by Jarus(m): 11:01pm On Jun 30, 2011
Abati is the most overrated pundit in Nigeria(I have a friend that must now hear this from me; he likes Abati so much that he underwent few weeks coaching under him when we were in school
The only thing I read from him are those comical satires just to have a good laugh. I stopped taking him seriously even before the Abuja land saga. I realized he is no longer as fire-spitting as he used to be some 5, 7 years ago.

To nail my suspicion about his compromise, I wondered why a public pundit will do a 10 series articles on a presidential candidate when he's not his official media person, if he was not paid to do that. He also played an active role in the launching of Jonathan's Facebook book. So this is why I'll not be surprised if he is named GEJ's media person. His pen language has been poiting to that since.

Business › Re: Putting Sanusi's Islamic Banking In Perspective by Jarus(m): 7:28pm On Jun 30, 2011
My lost post elaborately addressed  the question you raised here, but will try to summarize. But before that,  I must commend your demonstration of understanding of Islamic issues beyond basic and your civil articulation of points. It's been long I had this kind of engagement on Nairaland, as opposed to the kamikaze, bring-down-the-roof style of many people on discussions that border on Muslims/Islam.

That interest is forbidden in Islam is express as contained in the Qur'anic verse you brought forward earlier in the thread. But like any other religious issue that is inferential rather than express, the issue of whether working in an interest-dealing bank is forbidden is controversial among Islamic scholars. Some say it is also forbidden, as it constitutes contributing to interest, some others say 'see, if we abandon modern banking, we are going to lose, so it is expedient that Muslims also join'. Sanusi belongs to the latter and I have read him criticize the former camp before(one of the reasons I doubt his Islamic banking is to satisfy a set of people and not in national interest). His opinion should be respecte and that doesn't make him less Muslim, while those that say 'look, don't touch interest banking with a long pole' are also stricter Muslims.

The Sanusi I know doesn't appear to me as someone that will want to satisfy a certain set of people at the expense of national interest, not least interest-criticizing Muslim clerics he had fought in the past. His Islamic banking push is to plug Nigeria into the alternative banking system being adopted in various countries the world over.

Unfortunately, neithe you nor me has mind-o-meter to read his motivation.

Business › Re: Putting Sanusi's Islamic Banking In Perspective by Jarus(m): 5:15pm On Jun 30, 2011
I'm happy we at least agree on the common ground that there is nothing wrong with Islamic Banking prima facie. Our area of divergence seems to be in the motive - you doubt Sanusi's motive, while I don't.

Now, in fact one of the reasons I sincerely doubt SLS is out to tilt the economy in favour of North/Muslims, is that he worked in conventional, interest-dealing bank, rising to CEO. I honestly doubt somebody strict enough to force Islamic principle on people will do that.

I am a Muslim and I have read quite extensively, albeit in English, on Islam. One thing in modern Islam is that there are difference of opinions on certain issues in Islam among Islamic scholars[by this I don't mean the Sanusis o, I mean great authorities on Islam like Sheikh Albaani(from Albania), Sheikh Munnajid & Ibn Baaz(from Saudi Arabia) etc]. The issue of interest in Islam, as you pointed out in that Qur'anic verse you quote, is quite clear - it is forbidden. But does that make anybody engaging in it a bad Muslim? I don't think so, in as much he doesn't fall short on other basic areas(like praying 5 times daily, not killing, lying etc).

To be continued. Gotta to catch my company's staff bus now.

Sports › Re: Oliseh : 'Odemwingie is the only world class player Nigeria has' by Jarus(m): 10:21am On Jun 30, 2011
A world class player, by my own reckoning, is one that will make the First 11 or First 11+3 in any team or club in the world.
How many Nigerian players satisfied this criteria?

Only few African players like Eto'o, Drogba, Essien are unarguably world class. Adebayor, Toure brothers, and maybe are arguably too.

How many Nigerian players can make the First 11+3 of Brazil, Argentina, Barcelona, Man U etc. The nearest we have are Mikel and Taiye Taiwo.

odedele:
I have my reservations about the appointment of a seriously controversial and strongly opinionated person like Lamido Sanusi to head a conservative institution like the Central Bank. Those who are appointed to such position are hardly heard except on strictly professional matters. Their textual works and lectures that you read are more in the areas of their professional callings. This was not the case with Lamido Sanusi who has written more articles on Sharia and socio-political issues fifty times more than you will ever find on his works on economics or monetary policy.Sanusi's intellectual materials are articles like “Shariacracy in Nigeria: The Intellectual Roots of Islamist Discourses, Shariah and the Woman Question,” Institutional Framework of Zakat: Dimension and Implications,” On the Islamisation of Politics & the Politicisation of Islam” Between the Shariah and ‘Barbarism ” The Shariah Debate: A Muslim Intervention” Why are we surprised when this man started acting like he is a Chief Imam of the Central Bank of Nigeria as he champions the impunitive introduction of Islamic Banking in a constitutionally secular state like Nigeria.
So, for someone that has Islamic knowledge, you expect him not to contribute it to Islamic discourses. Of what use is such knowledge then?

My problem with many Nigerians, including people like you, is that you expect someone to hide his religion(especially if he is a Muslim) before he can be acceptable. In Erastus Akingbola's IB, spending first 15 minutes of work fellowshipping was norm, if not mandatory. There was even a bank, Omega bank, now rested, then managed by Pastor Agbetuyi, where there was no line between religion and banking. Nobody raised an eyebrow. Now because Sanusi is a Muslim that did not hide his religion, hell is being let loose, and he's declared not fit to head CBN. What happens to his knowledge of economics/banking?

Look, I'm not an Islamic scholar but an Accountant and Economics grad, but I also have a couple of published articles that touch on religion, does that make me unqualified to head any government agancy in teh future? Oh, sorry, it's on Islam
