@jarus i also follow him, i know the series he quoted your "private" mail to him. You said "our" mind. You too can be a celebrated columnist because i also wait for your facebook notes, and it also make sense, give it a trial. You can go beyond the "letter to editor" you normally do
Sorry to correct you, I have gone beyond letters-to-the-editor since more than 5 years now. What I write is 'Opinion' or 'Commentary', full half page, and on two occasions, Daily Sun and Leadership have given my articles 'Guest Columnist' status, the ones Atedo Peterside, Nasir el-Rufai and Eddie Iroh are given. An higher education-focus magazine in Abuja has also just approached me for permanent column writing in their new outfit, which is expected to hit the newsstand soon.

firstly, i never wanted to go to unilag, in fact i dislike lagos as a city. Secondly, if u call those guys i work with well grounded, then u really do not know the meaning of that word. Sorry for the generalisation, but the truth is there are significant number of unilag graduates where i work and they are not impressing anyone at all. However, grads from OAU, UI, UNIBEN AND EVEN UNIJOS ARE MILES AHEAD OF THEM. Sorry, just my candid observation. NB. Is an FG hospital we are talking about here, hence any incompetence cannot be hidden.
agreed uniport is not the best school, but truth is i dont regard unilag graduates that much. I mean these guys dont care about anything academic. All they do is club and are usuallly so materialistic. I dont care who did that rating, but for sure unilag isn't that a great school anymore. Am not hating, just stating it as it is. A lot of my colleagues just happened to be products of unilag. And these guys are not impressive at all. Saddest part is they dont seem to care at all. I give it to OAU, UI, UNIILORIN AND EVEN UNIJOS. My opinion. Thanks
Really? Then where would you put OAU, Unilag and UI?
The funniest post on nairaland? where should we put UI, Unilag, Ife, ABU, Uniben, Ilorin. Very funny
Country Ranking University Name World Ranking Category Article H-Index Citation Google Scholar Impact Collaboration Total
1 UI 931 B+ 72.38 29.11 63.16 30.09 46.22 45.35 286.29
2 OAU 1388 B+ 53.35 15.32 18.47 23.68 23.02 30.25 164.08
3 Unilag 1515 B 35.17 18.50 20.27 16.76 16.29 27.76 134.75
4 UNN 1525 B 45.20 16.91 12.93 18.59 15.53

Jakumo:
How could anyone forget the master satirist Olatunji Dare, who played such a pivotal role in the ridicule of military dictators, back when Dare was a columnist for the Nigerian Guardian. That man's prose was a sheer pleasure to read, though since he relocated stateside, he only sends the occasional piece to a less well known newspaper whose name escapes me now.
He now writes for The Nation and he's on my list, if you check up.

Young folks of our generation know little about Olatunji Dare. At the height of his punditry career, most of us were in primary/secondary schools then. Dare Olatunji is regarded in the industry as Nigeria's most cerebral political columnist in the 90's. He's an elder in the art now, and even in his current Tuesday columns in The Nation, you still see class in his writings.
Politics › Re: For The Last And Final Time: Benue Is Not North by Jarus(m): 9:54am On Jun 17, 2011
This thread is complete rubbish.Nobody has ever said Benue is Hausa/Fulani.Some Yorubas are northerners while some Igbos are South-south.They owe their allegiance to their zone.Even a Yorubaman from Benin is not a Nigerian.

Jbenue is an illiterate for coming out here to deny the obvious just because of inherent tribalism.Babangida,Gowon,Abdulsalami have ruled Nigeria for 19 years and they are Northerners.Remember that Abacha is Kanuri and not Hausa. So when you add it up,the Northern minorities have held the office of Presidency for 25 years out of 50.

I personally would rather have alliance with Fulani man that is truthful than a chameleon from Benue.I also advice every Igbo man never to believe in this unholy brotherhood extension because they killed us mercilessly between 1966 and 1970.

The only true Southerners are SW,SS and SE.Kogi and Kwara Yorubas are not Southerners
Thanks for educating him jare, if he will listen.
Some people don't know teh difference between North and Hausa/Fulani. North is a region consisting of probably more than 100 tribes, Hausa/Fulani are two of those tribes.

Maybe he should look for Middle Belt on the Compass.

I am a Yoruba from Kwara and a northerner.

violent:
TINUBU DISOWNS THE ATTACK ON HID AWOLOWO

Free English Tutorial for MODS:

When you use disown
in a context, the object should take the place of a Proper noun!

It's not heard of in the history of grammar to disown an "action".  The verb "disown" is commonly used in the context of parents regarding their children and can also be used of children regarding their parents or siblings!

"Tinubu denies the attack on HID Awolowo" makes for better written/spoken English.

PS.  This is a part of my personal initiative to combat national illiteracy.
Stop contributing to national illiteracy by miseducating people here.

The statement, 'disowns the attack',  is perfectly correct, grammatically.
Disown, according to major dictionaries, means 'to refuse to acknowledge or accept as one's own'.

Attack, as even used in that sentence, is not a verb(action), but a noun(thing).

They attack HID.(action, verb)
The attack on HID (noun)

The second is clearly operative there, not the first. That is your goof 1.
Goof 2: You said 'disown', when used as a verb, the object should take the place of a proper noun. This is incorrect. You can disown an action. In fact, major dictionaries define 'disown' as 'to refuse to acknowledge'. Now tell me why you can't acknowledge an action.  I refer you to that quote by Mason Cooley: "Fearful of sentimentality, I disown my tears and melting heart". Tell me 'tears' is a proper noun!

NB: To be double sure of my stand, I consulted answers.com and dictionary.com.

Nigeria has lost yet another fine banker, one of the very few in the industry. Worked, silently but assidously, with Fola Adeola in building GTB. While FA took the bulk of the credit, this guy too was a great brain behind him. And like someone has said earlier, how he maintained low profile while running such a high profile bank, and devoid of controversy, is beyond one's imagination.

Very humble. My GT friend told me how he used to be free with them all, eating at canteen with everybody else. And this must be true, the only time I saw him physically was when I went to cash money from GTB HO ATM sometime late last year. I was surprised seeing this man with no security details or even personal aides when he walked down to see somebody off.

I have actually heard he's been down with the big C since a couple of month ago.

Does this now confirm that Cancer has no cure?
Politics › Re: How 37-Storey NECOM house Was Sold To Bankole's Firm For N4 Billion! by Jarus(m): 9:40pm On Jun 14, 2011
As the asset accountant of my company, I deal with property valuation from time to time and this valuation appears fair value for sale purpose.

First, my company's asset around that house, has its land, of about same size with this NECON housr, valued at 600m in Dec last year. Given the fact that that structure is an old one, 4 billion is a fair price.

Also, in sale of asset by auction, the price should not be compared with the market value of that asset. The auctioning entity would normally give allowance for the buyer to make gains too. Consideration will also be given to the fact that he will spend additional costs to bring the property to fitting shape.

So comparing with market worth of the asset is not right.

As for Reps' car, if the depreciation policy is 3 years, a vehicle bought in 2008, no matter the value then, will have zero value(N10 scrap value) in 2011, after 3 years. So any amount sold gives a profit on disposal. But most organizations use 4 years as depreciation policy; if that's the case in FG accounting, then a jeep bought for 10m for example, will have NBV of at least 2.5m in 2011, hence except the vehicles have become severely impaired, the 200k price was ridiculous.

Jarus kuku dey around.

Trying to add 2+2 together in personal development.

Call it adult education, yours sincerely is looking forward to getting his first accounting professional certification this week. cheesy. And like I have always said, even with 3 years Accounting experience and Accounting professional qualification, I am still not convinced Accounting is my career destination. My first love remains Economics. This is why I am giving a shot a Msc(Economics) from Lag, after I realized I have been postponing same programme in a UK institution for 3 years now. I got Durham admission in 2007 but didn't go. Dropping work for the programme has not been an easy decision and I realize more and more commitments keep coming up(marrying, personal projects etc), which made me consider what I had always boasted I can't do: Masters in Nigerian university.

Now, attention has shifted from Msc to MBA as quality foreign degree I'm targetting to shore up my CV, all to prepare myself for my ultimate career goal: to be a top economic shot in Nigeria!

WOW . . . . WOW . . . what a spin!! lol

I like the way you felt the need to add there that the VP was not a member of the "cabal" -- interesting! Not sure but do you have any supporting evidence of this to offer? lol
The whole game then was:
The Cabal (who did not want power slip from their critically sick boss, to, constitutionally, his vice)
Vs
Rest of Nigeria(who wanted constitutional provision to take its course, and presidential powers transferred to VP)

Now, how will the VP, who will be the beneficiary of the demand of the 'Rest of Nigeria' be part of teh group that wanted power remain with an ailing YRD? VP GEJ clearly wanted power transferred but was helpless an dgutless to come out(not to be seen as a betrayer, at least) and speak against the actions of the cabals who had overwhelmed him. That was why teh first action he took after being given presidential powers was to sack the cabals in teh cabinet.

For once be sure to be your research first. Dora never canned Yar adua. If you had followed what really took place, you would have known that she was pivotal in ensuring the man remained president till his death, by her action during the last days. I even suspect that was part reason why she was retained as a Minister when the then VP was made President.
Are you sure? Because from what I know, Dora was initially protecting the president, saying all was well, that the president will return this date, that date, that the president did this, did that(can't remember teh specifics again). Then it was a battle between the cabals(including Segun and Dora), who have access to info; and Rest of Nigeria, with the VP and other non-cabal cabinet members confused and didn't know where to belong. That time, Dora and Segun were the ones coming up with information about the president's state, but most times, it was easy to discern their 'info' were half-truths.

Suddenly, Dora came out to deny ever knowing anything YRD's real state of health, claiming her conscience was what directed her to come out open, bla bla. Since then, she turned against joined teh camp of 'rest of Nigeria'.

This is why I'm surprised, you said Dora was with YRD till death!

Jarus, the fact that you would not have done better in his shoes is a bit defeatist but even if we accept that, the crux of the matter presently is his attempt to rewrite history and spin it to his favour.it makes us the public look silly and mkes it look like he is a bearer of some secrets that changes the whole picture.
Then we are finding congruence. The part I found revealing, actually, is where he mentioned Dangote et al as those that persuaded Obj to drop Odili. Never imagined Dangote, Otedola were so actively involved in high level politics to the extent of picking VP. The cabal part is already public knowledge and even if Seguns adds one or two new things, it can't change the whole picture, on the role of each and everyone of them.

And a disclaimer: I don't 'roll' with Thisday Editorial crew to the extent of them influencing my opinion. True, I communicate fringely with 2 of them but we just compare notes(one on economic, and the other, more regularly, on political developments); that's all. And the network started just during the last elections period.

Is it that as the spokesman for the president, he should have told the public how sick the president is? or tell the public what is happening to Yaradua in Saudi Arabia (doubt he visited him in Saudi arabia) or allowed near him

Even Dora only made a u-turn when she realized YRD may not survive the ailment. Talk of one being a hypocrite and the other loyal to their principal till end!

Jarus, like they say in the south;ALL THAT ONE NA WASH WASH!!

I am one of those who believes that Segun did no wrong in accepting that job.
the problem is his conduct in it.
It is even more disgusting that instead of hiding his head in shame  or pursuing his career away from the glare of the public,he seeks to rub it in on an already traumatised public by writing silly articles in which he thinks he is enlightened and we the public need enlightenment to save us from the darkness that pervades our polity.
confering on himself a relevance that he has since lost is not only egotistical but slightly delusional in my view.
This spin will work for some but i doubt i can be convinced and i believe neither would most right thinking Nigerians.
Not even Alaistair Campbell can spin this one right.
you don't need a whole book to apologise for your role in that govt.
Hmmnnn, as you know, I've never been a rigid critic or dyed-in-the-wool leftist. My opinions have always been moderate/midway, not criticize everything/everybody. So I'm not sure I was for you before  grin
My knowing one or two people in Thisday crew has not affected my judgment, either. I have never been a critic of Segun, even at the height of the Yar'adua health conundrum, because I know I would not have done better if in his shoes. As the image maker of the President, I did not expect him to do anything contrary to the interest of his principal. This anybody should have known before taking up such job.

I however agree that he is better off moving on in his career than narrating all those stories again.

But I have a few questions for all of us here:

1, You are a journalist by profession and Special Assistant on Communication/Media Adviser/Chief Press Secretary or whatever the nomenclature is, is a post usually reserved for media men. Now, is getting such a position, especially without begging for it, an achievement or a rise in one's career? Will you take the job, if offered? Are editors or even public affairs commentators not allowed to take a job reserved for their profession because of their criticisms

2, Will you be the mouthpiece of a government and work/speak contrary to that government?
