Career › Re: Finance And Economics, Which Is Better? by Jarus(m): 3:50pm On Jun 29, 2011
Well said, Chamber.

My additional advice is that it is better to obtain first degree in Economics and add professional qualifications and/orsecond degree in Finance.

Economics is wider and as an fresh Econs grad you will fit into more roles, and dare I say, have better prospect, than a fresh Finance grad.

Are you suggesting that there are other reasons for SLS studying Sharia and Islamic Studies in Sudan (nothing wrong with it anyway)?
So you think Sanusi studied Sharia 1991-1997, because he knew he would become CBN boss 12 years later and Islamize the economy with his Sharia knowledge?  shocked

To me, being an Islamic scholar and banker/economist are not mutually exclusive. He can be both. Everybody has private life, everybody has private goals. Sanusi has said many times that he has an eye for Kano emirship in the future. Who knows, his acquiring Islamic knowledge may be in preparation for this future role. He has 2 degrees in Economics and 20 years banking experience, what have his other legitimate personal pursuits got to do with his job?

Obasanjo, after a successful military career and 2 times as President, decided to go and study Theology, that's his personal choice, even if he had studied Theology in the thick of his career.

I also have some temper issue I'm struggling to deal with, but honetsly some people/actions are so annoying that if you dont't give it back to them hot, especially immediately, they will try it next time and take one for ride. Some sense of 'fulfilment' and satisfaction also comes with it.

But, a capital BUT, one has to be measured & calculative in it.

For example, last year I put one newly recruited gragra guy and his equally new boss that are always trying to prove fake efficiency in order to impress, to their right places. In order to show that they are working, when they make a simple request that could easily have even been done thru phone, tehy send mail, copying everybody including our function oga patapata group-wide(an ED and No 3 or 4 in Group wide hierachy). I have corrected him many times, but his gragra self would not listen. One day he sent one of such mail, a reminder on earlier request, copying all of them again. Thankfully, I had sent that him to him but he forgot, that was how I caught him. Come see the nasty response I sent him, 'replying all', including the ED. Since I had a good argument(that he was asking again for something I had sent him, and portraying me as inefficient), I fired the email back to him, with stylish turenchi, ending it with ' next time, please check your records well before sending thsi kind of mail, as this will not do teamwork, our core value, any good'. His oga(also copied, but on vacation) saw teh mail and tried to defend him, but it was weak. Nobody replied her, All the ogas(including the Group ED) read our email exchange but kept mute, did not intervene). Since that time, the guy fear me no be small. In

Hello peeps,
I'm now in roofing and plastring stage of my ongoing project, to Allah be the glory. I have spent 2.2m to this stage.

Please who has an idea on how much it will cost to do the roofing? From planks to roofing sheets to every other costs associated with roofing. I plan to use a moderate but beautiful roofing sheets.

Also, how much will plaster the house?

I sent 1.3m to my project supervisor yesterday and I have to have an idea on what the money can do, to compare with what he will tell me.

NB: I am focusing now on the 3-bedroom main building and abandoned the BQ temporarily(which are both at same stage now).

Much as I disagree with Katsumoto, he is clearly the type I can argue with, not the uninformed Jamallah whose post was clearly hate-filled and lacks substance.

Now, that said, Katsumoto, I find highly disagreeable your claim that Sanusi's belief is too hard to hold such a position.
I will put a question to you: Let's forget what happened to him in the last 2 years, if Erastus Akingbola's name has come up as CBN governor, would anybody has raised issue about his religious inclination? Erastus was a Pastor taht praeched on the pulpit, a professional, almost full-time pastor. Does that make him less qualified for CBN apex bank job given his illustrious(at least pre-2009) banking career? I have read Sanusi widely and I am not aware of his belief that is dangerous for that position. Is it because he is an Islamic scholar(just as Erastus was a Christian scholar)? If that Sudan degree had been in Christian Theology, who would have raised issue about his personal religious inclination. Guys let's be fair. This man is a Fulani prince, entitled to acquire Islamic knowledge, especially as he is a future emir. That does make him less banker/economist. Like I have said before, I strongly doubt Sanusi will pursue a primordial goal.

@Jarus, I appreciate your views but how much better if you will just restrict yourself to moderating.
You  have jumped into the fray one time too many and you may not be able to get out of it next time, thereby
reducing your influence as a moderator.
Thanks. But being the moderator does not mean I should not voice out my opinions. I have personal political opinions which I have been voicing out before I became a Mod. A newspaper editor that is at the same time a columnist is free to express his personal take on issues in his column, and as editor, give everybody fair reportage. Threads bashing Islamic banking are proliferating in this section, despite the fact that I personally support Islamic banking, but I did not touch them because I believe people against it cannot be stopped from expressing their views and as teh Mod I must accomodate every opinions.

CALL FOR SPONSORS - 2011 EDITION
Salam alaykam waramotullahi wabarakatuhu,
Ramadan 2011 is about one month away and insha Allah this Nairalanders' Iftar event will be witnessing its 3rd edition.
As you can see from this thread, which has been in existence for 2 years now, the maiden edition took place Ramadan 2009 at Mama Cass Restuarant, VI, Lagos and bankrolled by a member(name withheld). The 2nd edition, which took place last year, was done twice. First, sponsored by contributions from a number of members(brothers and sisters), was held at a Restuarant in Ikeja Lagos, while the second was solely bankrolled by Brother Majorola and held at Ikoyi Lagos. They were all very interesting and enhanced brotherhood(and sisterhood) among Muslim Nairalanders.

This year, insha Allah, the trend will continue. We therefore invite heeled brothers and sisters to earn Allah's bountiful rewards associated with feeding fasting Muslims, to seize this opportunity by coming forward to sponsor or co-sponsor the events. Insha Allah, we plan to have at least 3 in Lagos, and possibly in other places like Abuja, Kaduna and Kano for Nairalanders there.

HINTS:
1, The sponsor(s) will organize venue, which may be private house or Restaurant
2, The venue should not be too far, like the Lagos extremes(Ikorodu, Epe etc) may be too far to come. So residents of such areas willing to take up teh challenge may arrange a venue in more accessible areas like Island, Mainland, Ikeja etc
3, Sole sponsorship may cost between 30-50k depending on attendance, so should take note of budget.
Islam › Re: Nairalanders Iftaar - Season 7 by Jarus(op): 10:12am On Jun 28, 2011
If we have up to 4 sponsors, we will do it insha Allah. But the issue is attendance. Attending the 4 times is hardly possible for many people, meaning the only one or two will be well-attended and others scanty.

Meanwhile, let me initiate the call for sponsors now.

creating policy by fiat and force are outdated and they will never stand the test of time.
Remind me of the opinion polls conducted by Soludo's CBN before initiating his Bank Recapitalization process.
If a CBN governor can not use his initiative to determine what is good for the economy and doing so is regarded as 'force', then maybe we don't need a CBN governor again, all of us should just sit down and determine every policy!
Business › Re: Putting Sanusi's Islamic Banking In Perspective by Jarus(m): 9:54am On Jun 28, 2011
i am muslim but perhaps not your type of 'muslim'. let me tell you the issue here is pluralism.
First, stop telling us you're a Muslim. You're not the only Muslim here. Second, other countries where Islamic banking windows are available are also plural societies. So what exactly is your problem and why are you afraid of someone taht is purely optional?

Two, Islamic banking is not Sanusi's idea, not to talk of 'constipated'. He did not create it by fiat. It was initiated in the Joseph Sanusi days, and I even remember reading about Jaiz bank's activities far back 2002 or thereabout.

in the first place banking is not the priority of muslims in the north. a populace that has been decimated by corruption, feudalism (the like promoted by sanusi and his fore fathers)
Who told you Islamic banking is for you in the North?
Business › Re: Putting Sanusi's Islamic Banking In Perspective by Jarus(m): 9:25am On Jun 28, 2011
Furthermore, being someone that has read more than 3 dozens of Sanusi's articles written over a period of 10 years, I have a fair idea of Sanusi's thinking. If anybody will use his post to favour any religion or ethnicity, I can vouch that it is definitely not Sanusi. Sanusi has seriously criticized religious(Islamic) demagoguery in the past, even went to the extent of fighting dirty Kano's most popular Islamic cleric, late Sheikh Adams Ja'afar, and SLS was seen as a persona non grata in Kano. He has taken up Yarima and co, who in his(Sanusi's) opinion, was manipulating Islam for personal political ends in the past. SLS, to me, is definitely not someone that will initiate a policy not in national interest!
Business › Re: Putting Sanusi's Islamic Banking In Perspective by Jarus(m): 9:17am On Jun 28, 2011
The above said, I am a Muslim and a Yoruba man. I have also found myself agreeing with SLS in more than 90% of his actions and policies. The issue of non-interest banking falls into the 90%.

A lot has been said on this issue on NL and, not being someone given to protracted debates, especially with those who do not see beyond their ethno-religious noses, I have decided to stay off the debates and threads.

The issue of Islamic banking has been on CBN table since the Joseph Sanusi CBN governorship days. It gained further currency during the Soludo years. Now, Sanusi is continuing what his predecessors have initiated and somebody here is shouting religion and ethnicity, an issue that did not come up during the Joseph Sanusi and Charles Soludo years, simply because they were not Muslims. I even remember writing an article, published in Guardian newspaper, sometime around 2006 on this issue of Islamic banking. This was pre-SLS.

What exactly is wrong with Islamic banking? Islamic Finance is gaining momentum in top financial systems the world over and somebody here is crying foul for the simple reason that the man leading the plugging of Nigeria into the new global in-thing is a Muslim. Even global accounting and financial professional bodies like ACCA and CFA and introducing Islamic banking into their syllabus. More and more countries are introducing Islamic financial system as alternative to the conventional system, which is purely optional.

I know this post will receive flaks for no reason than that the I am a Muslim. Not a few other forumers will be surprised that 'oh, this is what religion can do to someone. oh, gosh, imagine Jarus defending Islamic banking'. My own opinions have never been dependent on what anybody will say of me. I care less about all those trivias, after all I know people, including on this forum, to whom my only offence is being a Muslim'.

i must question the motive of the moderators on nairaland.is nairaland becoming the mouth-piece of CAN?or maybe those "christian leaders" dramatizing the so called "islamic bank"?

how many threads are going to make headline on the preview board?isn't becoming propaganda on nairaland?

too many threads have already being created all about this "islamic bank".if i got billions and i want to open a non-interest bank aka islamic bank, why would the government or the central bank stop me?not even the president got that power in Nigeria to do that.is nigeria not said to be a free country where different practices are tolerated?

almost 5 threads have already being made on this topic.you can use google for it:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADFA_enNG415NG415&q=nairaland+islamic+bank

i can even see someone repeating his post in more than 1 thread to spread his message to southern muslims.what a cheap attempt.
I am an officer of Nairaland, but I must say I find the above fact disturbing. But like any media outfit, I recognise the fact that the owners reserve the right to use their outfit to pursue any goal!!!
