Foreign AffairsMilitary Stage Coup In Niger by jaybee(op): 7:45am On Feb 19, 2010
Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:09

Niger's President Mamadou Tandja was detained by mutinous troops today after a coup in the African uranium exporter that left at least three soldiers dead, military sources said.

Three Nigerien military sources said the coup was led by a soldier named Major Adamou Harouna.

'The coup leader has succeeded. It is being led by Major Adamou Harouna,' one source said.

AdvertisementThe president and the ministers are being detained not far from the presidential palace, the sources added.

Earlier in the day plumes of smoke were seen rising from the palace after soldiers attacked the building where Tandja was holding a meeting, sparking several hours of gunfire in the capital Niamey.

Political tensions have been high in Niger in recent months over Tandja's extension of his rule, which drew widespread criticism and international sanctions.

State radio, which had been broadcasting normally, began playing military music.

Witnesses said machine gun and heavy weapons fire erupted in the city at around 12pm Irish time.

Four hours later most shooting had eased.

Hospital sources said at least three soldiers were killed in the clashes. Earlier, a Reuters witness saw five injured soldiers at a hospital.

An intelligence officer, who asked not to be named, said the violence was a coup attempt that the presidential guard was trying to put down.

A French diplomatic source called the incident a coup attempt but said the fighting was short-lived.

Soon after 3p, a Reuters witness said soldiers from the presidential guard had reinforced positions around state television and radio installations.

Broadcasts continued as normal though the city's main markets had closed.

Police sources said they believed the attackers came from outside the city in armoured vehicles.

'It goes to show the political crisis is deepening. This indicates that there is growing discontent against Tandja, even in the loyalist camp,' said Control Risks analyst Rolake Akinola.

'We will see increased political and regional pressure for Tandja to concede (political) ground.'

Tandja drew criticism and sanctions after dissolving parliament and orchestrating a constitutional reform in 2009 that gave him added powers and extended his term beyond his second five-year mandate, which expired in December.

The move, which removed most checks on Tandja's authority, abolished term limits, and gave him an initial three more years in power without an election, drew international criticism.

West Africa's regional bloc ECOWAS suspended Niger and the United States terminated trade benefits, while former colonial power France also criticised Tandja last year.

ECOWAS, which has for months been attempting to broker a solution to the deadlock between Tandja and the opposition, said it would send a mission to Niger to assess the situation, adding it would impose further sanctions on any group that took power unconstitutionally.[/li]

WHAT LESSON(S) FOR SICKLY NIGERIA? INCURABLY GREEDY POLITICIANS? UNREPENTANT ETHNOCENTRIC NAIRALANDERS? GRUMBLING DOCILE SIDDON-LOOK NIGERIANS?
BusinessRe: Amnesty: Nigeria Earns N18b From Oil Daily by jaybee(f): 4:21pm On Oct 13, 2009
mantiete:
that Nigeria now produces between 1.6 million and 1.7 million barrels per day (bpd) and is sticking to its quota allocated by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
That translates into earning N18 billion a day.
your responses are laughable. they betray your individual and collective ignorace. that's how writers (rabble-rousers, insinuators, provocators, inciters, speculators etc. ) program you to think, feel, talk, behave and probably act; like robots.

now 1.7million barrels per day translate to N18Billion a day. do you know how much it costs to  produce one (1) barrel of oil ? do you know what constitutes the cost of production? do you know what percentage of the cost is paid by government? do you know what percentge of the profit goes to the government? do you know what percentage of the cost is paid by the producing companies? do you know what percentge of the profit goes to the producing companies? do you know the incubation period for oil and gas field development? these are just few tips to let you know that oil and gas business is far more than just number of barrels times number of nairas (dollars).
SportsRe: Bid For Chicago 2016: And Obama Was Humbled by jaybee(f): 11:25am On Oct 05, 2009
edoyad:
This stupid PDP mentality that's becoming prevalent will get us no where. Is the USA not inhabited by two legged human beings like those in other parts of the world. So because It's the US their below par preparation should be given consideration over Rio. The best prepared city won and to be honest south America deserve the 2016 oly.
Pele was dazzling the world long before Obama or Michelle were born so Let's forget that star power thing. If you notice, the IOC members are usually middle aged and Pele would appeal more to them than the Obama's who are Facebook/ Nairaland generation idols.
either you did not watch the voting or you were not attentive or you are just a bit mischievous.
if you listened to OIC at the event, it was clearly stated that all the 4 cities were equally capable of successfully hosting the games. all the cities had equal chances of being voted. it had nothing to do with adequate/inadequate preparations. there are other reasons behind the vote. for example, the 2012 Olympic would be hosted in London, Europe just next door neighbours of Spain this puts Madrid in disadvantage; China just hosted the last games and put fellow Asian country japan in disadvantage; while Rio had a lot of sympathy because no south American country had hosted the games. these days sport bodies think it expedient to rotate hosting of games to among all the continents, that explains why the 2010 fifa world cup is viewed as "African, not necessarily 'South african'. that is what affected Chicago (USA).
Obama did what he was suppose to do. he couldn't afford to sit on the fence on issues like this. he is not a president that runs away from responsibility. it would be cawordice for him to be passive on something that americans are passionate about. If president Obama remained passive and Chicago losses the bid, then the whole world would be calling for his head because he did not give his support. now he die what is proper for his office and you are calling him fool? a failure? this is not Obama's personal failure, it is America's due to no fault of theirs. "winners never quit and quitters never win".
pls have a rethink.
PoliticsRe: FG Reverses On Warri PTI Upgrade by jaybee(f): 5:38pm On Jul 28, 2009
naijatoday and your co-travellers. i hail you for a poor job of wasting a limited resource, time.
why are you so daft to have fallen prey, cheaply, to the the deceits of an insensitive and conscienceless mischievous writer. the distractful writer must be the happiest man (or woman) in nigeria now, and by extension, on earth  ( because nigeria still holds the record of the happiest people on earth), having achieved his goal of charging  you ignoramuses into frantic massaging of your crooked brains in search of adjectives to qualify (or disqualify??) president Yar'adua.
haba; nairalanders, are you so gullible that you must swallow every bait hook, line and sinker??
are you so confused that you can not differentiate facts and fiction even when a lie is in 3D and tangible??
can't you wait a split second, take a look before you leap? apart from nigerian leaders (most of them anyway), i've never been so disappointed in my life like your blind overaction to a figment of an amateur writers imagination.
you must earnestly seek for forgiveness, from God, or anyother sources, for all the abuses you have raned (or you are still howling) on president Yar'adua and others on account of the ill conceived newspaper article. (on other counts i don't know).
now this is the bottom line: Fg Reverses Warri Pti Upgrade. mothing can be farther from the truth. think about it. if you ca not think, be patient and wait for time to tell you what you ought to know.

And we Yorubas say NO to Ethnocracy form of goverment. Ethnocracy is not democracy. It is two different thing. We say remove the Yorubas, edo, delta and bayelsa into Benin republic and make the north have 70% of the oil and 90% of the land.
are you speaking for the yoruba race or for yourself?
i think it is high time people like you learnt to know the difference between personal opinion and collective opinion. in the elementary school we learnt it as 'singular and plural'.

i think nairalanders should be a bit more serious on issues raised at the forum. so far very very few meaningful contibutions have been posted on this and other topics under discussion. most nairalanders are just feeding themselves with the evergreen ethnic thrash. if the rambling in the nairaland represent the how the youth think and act, then there is no solution for nigeria's problems or challenges however we may like to view it. at least we should be profering (or postulating, where we can not profer) some possible (and probably) practical/workable solutions to the problems/challenges of the society whihch we are highlighting (even though they are glaring). permit me to join the religious in saying 'na only God go help niger'.
God blees nigeria.

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) is non-governmental,
non-profit legislative advocacy, lobbying, information sharing and research
organization. It arises from the felt need to address defects in the
legislative advocacy work of civil society and open the window through which
legislators can also access civil society groups.  It aims to strengthen the
work of Civil Society on Legislative Advocacy and bridge the gap between
legislators and the Civil Society.
