docjuli: Ngozi Okonjo-iweala Among Candidates For World Bank President

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and former Colombian Finance Minister Jose Antonio Ocampo are set to be nominated to lead the World Bank, sources with knowledge of emerging market efforts to find candidates said on Tuesday.

The candidacies of Okonjo-Iweala and Ocampo, who have credentials as both economists and diplomats and according to sources the respective backing of Brazil and South Africa, pose a challenge to the United States, whose hold on the top post has never been contested.

But with its majority of votes and the expected support of European countries, the United States is still likely to ensure that another American will succeed Robert Zoellick, who plans to step down when his term expires at the end of June.

i have been to Transcorp Hilton in abuja and some other hotels in Lagos with friends and the cost of our meals on average is just as the one under discussion. although i did not have the option of collecting the cash, i ensure i enjoyed the meal.

this price for a meal is fair. remember that it is not a continous thing; it is once in a while. she must have been there for a purpose which may not be compared with the cost of her meal. if eating a meal with receipt is corruption, then there is no corruption in nigeria.

talking about food, consider over one billion naira budgetary allocation for food at asso rock, for 2012 alone, which translates into millions of naira per meal. that is not receipted. no break down. that may be a potential a source of corruption.

jonathan and his media adviser are just playing the ostrich. this press release is an attempt to distract nigerians from the real issues on ground. the critical challenge of weak leadership, systemic corruption, inept politicking and so forth. gej's administration has exhibited, and continue to show, lack of focus, initiative, will and determination, first to unravel, and then, find solutions to the challenges daring the nation, in that order. thats just it. no two way about it governance is not by mere talking and whipping sentiments on major issues at stake. by the way who are the 'northern leaders'? are they not the ones that wine and dine with him daily? why cant he talk to them at the appropriate forum? why cant he call them to order as c-in-c ? is he afraid of them? why use the media to speak to your bosom friends? have other avenues been explored and they failed? if gej must report the 'northern leaders' to the court of public opinion, then we also deserve to know what has been going on before now.

is gej already finding alibi for an eventual woeful failure?

why is the government shouting and insisting on dialogue if they dont know who they are talking to? who is the government fooling? the government may fool some nigerians, but hardly boko haram, who have brought govt's woeful security weakness to open glare.

govt either get serious with security or they shut up their big mouths and concentrate on looting the nations resources, a sport they are best at.

away from govt's shortcomings, how did SCIA, or Datti Ahmed qualify to mediate between FG and BH? i'm just wondering; they have access to the leadership of BH. they can talk to them. they can assuage the BH. which means BH is not faceless. if Datti Ahmed knows BH and govt knows Datti Ahmed, then govt knows BH.

Nigeria: FG to Hand Over 100 Almajiri Schools By June
By Bukola Olatunji, 29 February 2012

About 100 of the 400 almajiri schools, promised by the Federal Government are to be handed over to the 19 Northern states by June, Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike has said.

Wike, who disclosed this, during a courtesy call on the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, at his Palace yesterday, said this was in fulfilment of President Goodluck Jonathan's campaign promise of ensuring that Almajiri children were educated to contribute their quota to national development.

"The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the federal and state governments are therefore being worked out," he said. The minister was in the state to inspect the on-going construction of the Almajiri schools in Lambar Tureta and Badau communities in the state.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of work, saying the contracts were awarded last December and one of the contractors assured that the project would be handed over next month.

Responding, the Sultan said: "What the ministry is doing is what we have always thought of and what we believe must be done. Education is very important because this Sokoto caliphate was founded on knowledge. Our great grand fathers established this caliphate purely on knowledge. It is now our responsibility to foster this knowledge and clamour for it because without education, you cannot even practice your religion."

According to him, "he Almajiri issues has been a problem to all of us because people hide behind religion in the past. We should handle the Almajiri issue more seriously. We believe we have to educate people that Islam was never in support of Almajiri. Islam was never in support of begging."

Islam is a religion that believes that an individual must get up and work for himself and be a better person and not to depend on anybody. Issues of Almajiri and others must be eradicated and it can only be eradicated through knowledge. We want to commend the Federal Government for the initiative."

The Sultan also drew attention to the reported scrapping of History from primary and secondary schools curricula, saying "Only people without identity will forget their history." He also stressed the need to make Religious Study compulsory in order to tackle corruption.

http://allafrica.com/stories/201202290319.html
What is the point of this poster?

take a good look at the emphasized part of this write up. GEJ promised almajiri schools during his campaign. let him fulfil the promise. the 19 state governments did not promise almajiri schools. they promised other things according to their needs. let them fulfil their promises. the state governments do not have budgets for this "promised schools". GEJ should not make a promise and impose it on the state governments. will he fund the running of the schools?

This is a scam by GEJ and his cronies.

out of 400 schools promised "one of the contractors assured that the project would be handed over next month" haba GEJ!

what of the airports promised by GEJ in each state of the federation? will he also hand them over to the states?

GEJ wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously Nigerian youths know very little about their country. The OP's write up is a muddle of errors deliberately sensationalized to create a hightened sense of injustice. Alhaji Indimi is Kanuri from Maiduguri & not a Hausa-Fulani as purpoted by the OP. The OP's knowledge of geography and Nigeria's geo-politics appeared, at best, shallow. He kept mentioning Kano & Niger states as part of the North-East. He apparently couldn't decide if to take on the North-East or the entire Northern establishment. In spite of all the identified errors, the story is basically true in terms of existences of the various companies named as well as the ownership & line of business. But the OP still stand accused of deliberate ommission of individuals & companies of Yoruba & other origins who are equally if not more guilty of the theft in our backyard. Why mention Conoil yet fail to mention Mike Adenuga? I think the bottom line is that a thieving cabal has hijacked Nigeria for decades & this cabal cuts across every nook & cranny of the country. Any attempt by @Beaf & fellow mischief makers like him to paint a regional color to this madness is silly and baseless. Such accusations can only help to keep Nigerian youth separated in an elite inflamed "divide & rule". Wake up Naija! The Hausa man is not your problem. He's a victim like you. He's probably more of a victim than you. Focus your strenght on our worst enemy, the ruling elite!!!!
i guess i'm not impressed by the myopic, incoherent, and totally nonsensical views of most posts in this thread. the OP must have once again record a temporary success  in his mischief campaign against the north and northern elements.

i have lived in almost all regions of Nigeria except the north east. i am not convinced that the north is poor while the south is rich; whatever that means.

my observation is that there are rich people in the north as well as in the south; there are poor people in the south as there are poor people in the north. there are thieves in the north just as there are thieves in the south; there are a few good people in the south and there are few good people in the north.

Nigeria is a weak country with weak leadership and docile followership; thieving leadership and clapping followership. weak traditional institutions, weak administrative institutions, weak judicial institutions, weak political institutions.  exploitative leadership and defending followership. actively religious people yet morally weak people.

what good can we expect from this pathetis scenariohuh?

What's the use of this thread?

I honestly believe discourse should be on content of the subject not the headline which bears no relationship whatsoever with the diatribe.

I will also advise that those posting replies should read the content of the article to the point of minimum reasonable comprehension before throwing out the contents of their dirty thoughts.

After going through this shallow and simplistic write-up, i can only but cry for Nigeria if this is what some people are scrambling for space to comment on. it does not make sense and does not deserve any response at all.

I can't find where Sanusi was quoted verbatim, or even by implication as saying 13% derivation is the cause of northern underdevelopment. So why this senseless headline? because it does not qualify to be sensational.

in any case how does money that does not belong to you ab initio lead to your underdevelopment?

can we now say that the states that receive 13% derivation are developed? or even better than the so-called north?

i smell a calculated attempt at ridiculing the north, not Sanusi alone, in this nonsensical write-up. and the writer, being foolish defined it at the beginning of his incoherent diatribe.

the supposedly writer has betrayed his driver of his hopeless attempt at Sanusi and the north. it is sheer political phobia. IMAGINARY POLITICAL FEAR OF THE NORTH.

Dr. ANTHONY MUDIAGA if you want to contest for presidency in 2015, you are free. I can see you already have some myopic followers, which are not in short supply in nairaland anyway. so goodluck for you and your followers.

My organisation started implimenting the new tax regime last

NO SIR, because the tax of your organization crashed by half does not mean that the total tax revenue accrued to the FG has crashed. the objective of tax reforms is to remove impediments to tax payment so that more organizations/individuals will pay correct taxes and revenue will increase. The tax reform is targeting greater number of tax payers, not higher individual taxes. one of the ways to minimize the apathy to tax payment is to remove multiple and arbitrary taxation as much as possible. this will curb tax evasion and other sharp practices and of course, raise tax revenues.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

President Jonathan Did Not Contest for AU Chairmanship

It has come to our attention that some media houses are alleging that President Goodluck Jonathan was "defeated" by President Yayi Boni of Benin Republic in the “contest” to elect a new African Union Chairman at the 18th AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This report is false and is only the latest in a series of sensational and fictional reporting in a bid to cast the administration of President Jonathan in bad light. Let me make the following clear:

1. It is not true that President Yayi Boni “defeated” President Goodluck Jonathan in an election; there was no contest in the first place and President Jonathan was not a candidate for the AU Chairmanship position.

2. It is also not true that President John Atta Mills opposed President Jonathan at any time. Ghana and Nigeria enjoy excellent relations.

3. It is true, however, that in the last week, some newspapers have been speculating that President Jonathan may be adopted by the ECOWAS Heads of States and Governments to be the next chairman of the African Union, since it was the turn of ECOWAS to produce the AU Chairman for 2012-2013. Mr. President was indeed approached by leaders within and outside the West African sub-region to take up the challenge of leading the AU for the next one year.

4. While appreciating this kind gesture, President Jonathan resolved that he needed time to focus on domestic affairs in Nigeria, and that it would be practically difficult for him to combine the three positions of President of Nigeria, Chairman of ECOWAS and Chairman of African Union. He therefore rejected the offer.

5. In order to make his position clear, President Jonathan, in his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, summoned a mini-Summit of ECOWAS at the AU Commission Headquarters on Saturday, January 28, 2012, to ensure that there was a meeting of minds on the position of AU Chairman. His preference, he noted, would be for ECOWAS to adopt the leader of another country, in order to promote a sense of belonging among member-states. Nigeria, having occupied the position of AU Chairman four times in the past, would readily support any such country.

6. As it turned out, the President of the Republic of Benin had indicated interest in the position, which paved the way for his unanimous adoption by the ECOWAS Heads of State as the sub-region’s candidate for the AU Chair. Thus, it becomes obvious that President Jonathan rather than being “defeated” by President Yayi Boni of Benin actually facilitated his emergence as AU Chairman.

You have chosen an onerous task indeed. defending the indefensible. jonah has never claimed to have a clue in what is going on in nigeria; and it is obvious. your attempt to make cosmetize jonah, into what he is not, will only amount to a sheer waste of time and space.

by your continuous meddling into jona's normal affairs, your state of mental and psychological confusion is becoming glaring to those who otherwise thought you were normal.

for the discerning rest of us, we are not, and can never be, surprised at the level of mischief you can attain. we may only be surprised if you fell short of proving your true position as the irreducible minimum imaginable level of a fool. that is to say, when you neither live indoors nor stay outdoors because of the shame and regret you have unsolicitingly  invited upon yourself by way of trying, unsuccessfully, to defend the indifensible jonah, after your overt mischief is further let loose by jona's incompetence will ultimately land him into the Guinness book of records.

You will always abuse because you are empty, sir. It doesn't change easily verifiable facts.

Buhari has spent 90% of his political life being chairman of the NNPC. He formed NNPC into what it is today. Indeed, Buhari was its first head in 1977 during the period corruption set into the oil industry (Decree 33, NNOC & MPR extinguished).
He was also petroleum minister under Obasanjo, PTF chairman under Abacha (whom he claims never stole a penny).
With Buhari under Abacha, there was rampant removal of the "subsidy" and award of importation contracts to cronies, Buhari became the chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) that disbursed monies accrued from the removal of "subsidies."

So tell me, is Buhari being honest, or is he just flying an ugly populist kite?

Abacha did not remove subsidy totally as you are trying to insinuate.

"In October 1994, General Sani Abacha hiked the pump price of petrol from N3.25 to N11 per litre, promising, with Decree 25, to set up a Petroleum Trust Fund to distribute the gains from the increase on social and infrasturctural projects"

he increased the pump pice of fuel to generate money for holistic interventionist infranstructural development wich worked very well until OBJ decided to rubish it and heaped the ugly consequences in hapless spineless and docile nigerians.

I agree with the Governor that 15 year old coaches are good enough for us in Nigeria; at least for now. majority of the cars/buses/trucks/trailers/aircrafts/boats/ships/okadas/power bikes/shoes etc tec are not less than 15 years old. it is left for doubters to prove otherwise.

the issue of six years manufacturing/delivering period is debatable. do not forget that it is an EPC contract. it takes about a year to consumate (sign the dotted lines). it is not a piece of yam yo pick and pay in the market.

I sincerely doff my hat for Governor Fashola for telling the truth on this issue. others at the centre would be denying, shamelessly and annoyingly, and trying to pass the buck to imagined political enemies (opponents); or detractors, by what ever name called. i feel this project will work, unless proved otherwise.
