l would s appreciate definitive action if possible today. treament without food wont make hamed get better like he should. we read that his mum had to join lawma to feed them having exhausted money for trade on his treatment earlier. so the assistance should be expidited and not give corporate response like " duly noted" without exact promise.

Do you know what it took for him to still come out to admit he wanted to ask but doesnt know how too? After treatment, wont he eat? abi doing little things that would reduce unnecessary worries too wont improve his morale and fighting spirit.

Earlier this month, I had a dinner with a group of friends (14 of us) and we were chit-chatting about Nigeria. One of us, an associate of President Jonathan veered off to repeat a propaganda mantra that Jonathan had outperformed his predecessors. He also reminded us that Jonathan re-based the GDP and that Nigeria is now the biggest economy in Africa; etc.  
It was fun listening to the response by others. In sum, the group agreed that the President had ‘outperformed’ his predecessors except that it is in reverse order.  

First, my friend was educated that re-basing the GDP is no achievement: it is a routine statistical exercise, and depending on the base year that you choose, you get a different GDP figure.  Re-basing the GDP has nothing to do with government policy. Besides, as naira-dollar exchange rate continues to depreciate, the GDP in current dollars will also shrink considerably soon.

We were reminded of Jonathan’s agricultural ‘revolution’. But someone cut in and noted that for all the propaganda, the growth rate of the agricultural sector in the last five years still remains far below the performance under Obasanjo.

One of us reminded him that no other president had presided over the slaughter of about 15,000 people by insurgents in a peacetime;

no other president earned up to 50% of the amount of resources the current government earned from oil and yet with very little outcomes;

no other president had the rate of borrowing;

none had significant forex earnings and yet did not add one penny to foreign reserves but losing international reserves at a time of boom;

no other president had a depreciating exchange rate at a time of export boom;

at no time in Nigeria’s history has poverty reached 71% (even under Abacha, it was 67 -70%);

and under no other president did unemployment reach 24%.

Surely, these are unprecedented records and he surely ‘outperformed’ his predecessors!  What a satire!

what would now make the relationship degenerate to this level seeing she has genuine interest in tehn. having divergent views shouldnt have degenerated to this level.

Update 20th December ‎

First and foremost we would like to thank each and everyone for the concern shown in the past few days. We understand and appreciate the interest shown in the getting of DJ back to his feet and appreciate this as we all have equal stake in it.

We have listened and will continue to listen as success to us is seeing him pain free.

Having said the above, DJ has had to check himself back into the hospital this morning as he felt a bit of discomfort over the night. 


Our field worker was able to meet with him at the hospital and spoke to the doctor.

The results from th‎e cytology and the CT scan has been examined and they have referred him to an oncologist.

They said we have two choices in this case, we either use the teaching hospital (in which case he will have to wait until they end their strike) or we use Lakeshore Cancer Center(LCC) in VI.

Upon this we took the results to LCC to make enquiries 

‎These are the results of our enquiries at LCCs

• Their oncologist is not around and wont be around until Monday so we have booked an appointment for noon on Monday which we will have to bring Hamed ‎ along

• we have dropped the test results and our details  and they said they will call u‎s later to confirm our appointment.

• They are majorly an out patient facility and so they do not admit except in cases where the patient needs chemo

• They charge 10k for registration and 60k for consultation and palliatives.

‎We have been requesting for steer and direction on this case but only the following have been gotten so far

1. Ask the doctors for the probability of a cancer diagnosis . This is done now.

1. Since the consensus on the forum is that the first hospital is not satisfactory, we need a place where he can be stabilized pending when he can be flown abroad for treatment

2. Should we start treatment at the LCC

 3. Funds are needed for this venture either at LCC or abroad

UPDATE!!!


As promised, we visited the hospital on Monday (15/12/2014) to express our growing concerns with respect to the perceived slow pace as far as getting a definitive diagnosis is concerned.

We were able to extract the following Information (Please see summary below) from his doctors:

‎Hammed was first brought in from Eruwa about a month ago, he presented with progressive weight loss, abdominal swelling and lower back pain.

Based on the combination of the swelling and lower back pain, there were four options which were considered

1. malignancy
2. Advanced retroviral disease
3. Liver Disease
4. Abdominal Tuberculosis

The first thing was to do a retroviral test which showed no viral disease.

The next step was a test of kidney and liver functions respectively which showed they were about average more or less and thus that was eliminated

In addition, other tests (both routine and sophisticated) have been held and so far were only indicative.

The next step was to refer Hamed to a gastroenterologist for the liver biopsy where it was decided he be drained first.

After draining and before the biopsy (which was not held), a surface lump was sighted via physical examination and scans.

The thought of the specialist was then to do a laparoscopy (a minimally invasive procedure) to remove the superficial lump.

However he was brought back to Life Specialist.

Based on the drained fluid, a cytology of the fluid was held.

In the meantime, a regimen to embattle abdominal tuberculosis was embarked upon Tuesday which has accounted for the improvement in his physical condition

The thinking here is that while the results of tests are awaited, this is a no risk step which will pay dividends if the diagnosis is abdominal TB and at least provide some healing if not.

The result of the cytology  showed a presence of cancerous cells but no idea of the primary source just yet

NEXT STEPS

A. the results of the CT scan on the abdominal area is awaited. he hopes to follow up with the lab and get this tomorrow

If this does not provide the primary source, there is need for additional scans so as to identify the source and then the stage

B. Once the primary source, the relevant course of treatment can be embarked upon

 
Immediate Challenges:
Hammed is now feeling stronger than ever and in turn wants to return home as he is growing bored of sitting about the hospital doing nothing. We do sympathise with him as well as happy that his condition has at least gotten better if compared to the way it was weeks back.
 
As much as we feel the best way to approach this is by him getting a definitive diagnosis and in turn proceed on an agreed treatment plan, we understand his growing frustrations and thus might have to reluctantly allow him to turn into a day patient. He has assured us that he will present himself as of when needed and we will continue to work with him to provide a lasting solution.
 
PS: We are impressed with the visual state of Hammed as he now looks much better. His face looks fresher and he is generally more optimistic for the future
