theoldpretender: Then you missed the ultimate point of my missive...which, while defending religion...also points out the fact that development is based on a lot of other factors.
50-80 years ago, these countries were developed...and also very religious. Infact, many of these countries were religious during the industrial revolution.
Gay rights is a recent phenonenom. (Many European countries only got gay rights when they were long developed. Heck, Japan had gay rights in the 1950's...Europe has caught up in the 1990's. UK got there in 1968 ).
Again these are recent trends. Plus...Christianity was growing too...from 5% in 1962 TO 27 percent today.
Besides, the South's development has a lot to do with lack of natural resources and defensive purposes, plus a Confucian influenced ethos regarding education.
And then there is the US which has a high proportion of religious people. In Africa , we have South Africa that is very developed...and has high proprtions of religousity even among the white people
And throughout the Industrial revolution, most European countries were religious. Many inventors of the stuff you use were religious (Faraday who made inventions that advanced electricity was religious. As was they guy who developed anesthesia)
But to me, a country's development is not based on religion or lack of it...it is based on whether a country is willing to work hard for it. Here in Nigeria, we are poor and underdeveloped because most people have a daily bread mentality which prevents long term thinking. Many European countries are developed because they lacked enough natural resources....and had harsh climates...which meant you had to adapt or not survive (That's why they developed the theory of evolution over there...heheheh...too much adapting!). IN Nigeria, we think that we have lotsa natural resources that we can sell for money, and use to import stuff we can enjoy life with...and that makes things harder for us.
If Nigeria wants to develop,we have to work hard for it. But in a country where people somehow expect us to magically have everything the developed countries have because...we has oil..which isn't even earning us enough cash anymore.....we have a long way to go. Atheism won't change much if we adopted it. Yes, you are right. Religion is not the only problem we have in nigeria/Africa. Atheism or secularism wont solve all our problems. However, the fact remains that religion is one of our major problems. Second only to corruption and poverty. Secularism will only put us on the first step to progress. We need further economic, legal and educational reforms. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Why It Is Wrong To Tell Nigerians To Dump God Because Of The Prosperity In China by JeromeBlack: 9:35am On Feb 17, 2019 |
theoldpretender: Yes, China is developed but...
1.China has a lot of poor people, and poverty is rampant. Some areas look like they are very poor.
2.China has a culture of valuing education...but that is due to a guy called Confucius. Confucius was a religious leader who among many other things taught Chinese that education was very valuable.
3.China's education system is a strict meritocracy. (Because when your school going population is in the hundreds of millions...you have no choice).
4.China has very limited natural resources. So it is either you industrialise or forget it.
5.Under the atheistic Chairman Mao, China was severely underdeveloped due to a combination of very bad economic practices, and something called the Cultural Revolution. Why they are developed now has something to do with 'capitalisim'.
6.Nigeria is not developed for the simple reasons that Nigerians have this idea of sourcing for their daily bread...which renders us incapable of long term planning. Also the fact that we have natural resources has rendered us lazy.
7. To all those atheists out there...Vietnam is an anteistic nation...yet is poor. As is North Korea...whose budget is not up to one quarter of the deeply religious and sometimes conservative South Korea. I like how you cherry pick facts to support belief in religion. Here are some wholesome facts for you 1) The most developed countries (Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland, Denmark) according to HDI all have 3 things in common -Secularism with high number of atheists -A continuous decline in number of christians -A high investment and good attitude towards education -Gay rights. 2) South Korea is the 5th most atheistic country in the world and 56% do not follow any religion. 3) The poorest countries in the world are all very very religious |

Will still gladly come to church i.e the gathering of the brethren, if such a gathering has no chairs?
What if it has no roof and you are to get beaten by that hot 11am Sunday morning sun, or when it suddenly starts raining?
What if you are unable to hear the pastor's voice due to no electricity to power the microphone becase NEPA has disconnected the church for failing to pay bills?
What if the pastor fails to show up because his place of work where he sort sollace to make ends meet transferred him to Abuja on a weekend mission?
Keep that money to yourself if you don't want to praise God with it. But know that God is raising men who will obey his commandments. Offerings is there for the church to use to maintain its premises. There is no need for tithes |

I only compared the two movies.
You said Velvet b is creepy i agree, but that's some people were trying about hereditary but Velvet buzzsaw beats it hands down. Hereditary was creepy actually. I think I gave it 6/10 or so. I prefer Velvet Buzzsaw to Hereditary overall. However, if we are going to go with the horror factor alone, hereditary has more horror than velvet buzzsaw. In fact, velvet buzzsaw ranks at 5.8 on IMDB while Hereditary ranks at 7.3 |

Felixomor, can you decide this parable? |
Christianity Etc › Re: The Christian Chatbox ( sticky) by JeromeBlack: 3:03am On Feb 12, 2019 |
Ihedinobi3: Your questions are really one question, in my thinking: why is there pain and suffering in this life if God is just and has a plan?
But I will take them separately for simplicity.
His plan for them - as for everybody else - is for them to be saved from Eternal Condemnation and live with Him free of all kinds of pain and sorrow and regret throughout eternity. That is always back of everything that God either ordains or permits in this life.
First, God is God and is thus not subject to any questioning. That is, it is folly to imagine that God is responsible to anyone at all. What He does is entirely as He pleases. So, it is wrongheaded to call Him on the carpet. A failure to accept this will simply make it impossible for the person asking questions to even begin to comprehend God's Wisdom in all that He does.
Second, this life is really just one very large question for each individual: will you trust God and submit to His Authority confident that He does all things well? Or will you consider yourself wiser than Him and reject His Authority confident that you can do better than He? All of our experiences are designed to give us an opportunity to answer this question. So, even though God does not want us to suffer as we do, He does permit it so that we can have a real chance at deciding whether we trust Him or not. Without a real opportunity to doubt His Ability and Character, we cannot really willingly choose to trust Him.
Third, part of the configuration of the circumstances that allow us to make a choice about God is the choices that other people make about Him. Wicked people exist who are choosing to reject God's Authority and who demonstrate that choice by hurting other people. Short of removing their right to choose, it is not possible to remove the role that they play in creating the circumstances which allow their victims to make their own choices. So, although it is no fault of the children's that they were born into homes like that, it is still an opportunity both for them and for their parents to demonstrate their choices about God.
Fourth and finally, this life is painful, yes, and regrettably so. But it was not meant to be that way. It only became that way because of #3 above. If creatures had not chosen to rebel against God at all, there would have been no evil whatsoever in the whole Creation. But they did and now everybody is touched in some way by it. But God allows it to give everybody a fair chance to choose the eternal destiny they want. In the end, all those who choose to trust Him will find that all the pains of this life will disappear and be replaced by only joy, only peace, only perfect happiness. Things must be this way for now but they will not be so forever.
There really is only ever one thing to say, no matter who the audience may be: we are all sinners deserving of far worse than this world is able to throw at us. For even the least sin, the Lake of Fire is a devastating answer. But we don't have to pay for any of our sins anymore. We can look forward to an eternity completely free from all the terrible pains of this life and the incredible agony of the Lake of Fire if we choose to trust God and walk with Him no matter what.
Life is painful, no matter where we are and what we are doing. There is always something that hurts in a way that can make us call God on the carpet. But if we are honest, God is never to blame. He didn't have to create anybody. His doing so was His Pleasure. We owe Him our very existence whatever it may be. If our life is painful, He promises that if we trust Him now, He can show us a peace and a joy that cannot be touched by our circumstances and experience right now in this life. And after this life, He guarantees that we will never again have any experience like what we suffer through in this life.
This is not merely a fair deal. It is incredibly generous since it was our own rebellion that produced the pain of this life. If we say that we committed no sin to merit being born into such wicked families as your friend was, we must also remember that your friend could only be born if that family existed. As such, even though he was not suffering for something he did, being born there was his opportunity to demonstrate whether he thinks God is worth anything to him. That opportunity had incredible eternal rewards attached to it. Every labor is painful but the payout is what makes it sweet. God is always good to us even in giving us a chance to prove what we are worthy to receive in eternity. Interesting. I am summarizing your points as follows 1) The suffering any human being faces is irrelevant in God's eye. The overall master plan is to live in eternal paradise with him 2) God is not subject to us. We cannot question him 3) The original sin of Adam and Eve is also affecting us. We are partly responsible for it. (While you might be tempted to deny this consequence of your argument, remember that you said this; It is incredibly generous since it was our own rebellion that produced the pain of this life.4) We all deserve to burn in hell because as you said; we are all sinners deserving of far worse than this world is able to throw at us. For even the least sin, the Lake of Fire is a devastating answer.================================================ I really want to say that I expected such heartless and illogical thinking from you. This is the problem many atheists have with believers like yourself- you put theology before rational analysis. I will make five points in rebuttal of your theological points; 1) Facts remain facts and the important fact here is that humans are products of their upbringing and environment. This is why a son of a wife beater is usually a wife beater in future. Even the bible says that light cannot come out of darkness. It is actually an exception when an abused child turns his or her life into a good one as an adult in the future- usually the child becomes an abuser or a depressed human being. 2) Coming off from point 1, your God seems to put people in positions that make them less likely to believe in him. I want you note that some of these serial killers had some certain satanic and occultic beliefs. Now, imagine that you were born in a family that belonged to a satanic cult- would you have become the christian that you are today?3) I come from a catholic background and I can attest that no one explains original sin like the catholics do. You are a catholic. Do you know that the concept of original sin is a catholic creation? Sorry but I left the catholic church because of doctrines like original sin. One cannot be responsible for the sins of his or her ancestors. 4) As a black humanist, slavery rubs me the wrong way. I hate slavery- both mental and physical. I cannot serve a God that cannot be questioned. That is mental slavery. If God gave us brains to reason and ask questions, then he should expect to be questioned by us humans. Your point that God does not owe us answers is both ridiculous and contradictory. Furthermore, the God you present is not a leader but a slave driver. True leadership is service to one's followers. Have you forgotten that Jesus washed the feet of his followers? A God that cannot be questioned is one that cannot lead. How can you lead people if they do not understand your motives? There is a reason why atheists regard a lot of christian as brainless sheep- they just follow religion without thinking. 5) Even the catholics knew that all sins could not be counted as equal. Even in Dante's inferno, all sins do not get the same treatment. Your view that we all deserve hell because even the smallest sin deserves the lake of fire is nothing but heartless, apathetic and fatalist. Are you arguing that a lying teenager deserves the same fate as a serial killer? Your view on life is worse than nihilism. Where the nihilist believes that there is no meaning at all, you believe that there is no meaning except the choice between heaven and hell in the afterlife. Both you and the nihilist waste your lives, the difference is that the nihilist wastes his life in meaninglessnesss while you waste your own life in an illogical purpose. |
