An influential traditional priest aged 63 has sparked an outrage in Ghana by marrying a 12-year-old girl. The priest, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, married her in a customary ceremony held on Saturday. In the face of criticism, community leaders have said people do not understand their customs and tradition. The legal minimum age to get married in Ghana is 18 and the prevalence of child marriage has declined, but it continues to happen. According to the global campaigning NGO Girls Not Brides,19% of girls in the country are married before they reach 18 and 5% get married before their 15th birthday. Videos and photos of Saturday's elaborate event that was attended by dozens of community members have been widely shared on social media, triggering an outcry among many Ghanaians. During the ceremony, women speaking in the local language Ga told the girl to dress teasingly for her husband. They can also be heard advising her to be prepared for wifely duties and to use the perfumes they gifted her to boost her sexual appeal to her husband. The statements fuelled the outrage, as they have been perceived to mean that the marriage was not merely ceremonial. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-68692997

Nigerian oil production, beleaguered by rampant theft and sabotage, hit its highest in more than three years amid a concerted effort to crack down on targeted attacks and organized theft rings. According to OPEC data, the country’s production hit 1.476 million barrels per day (bpd) in February, after hitting a decades-low in the second half of 2022, when it dropped below 1 million bpd. Since then, the government has pursued a more efficient and aggressive policy for cracking down on theft and pipeline sabotage, hiring private security firms to bolster military efforts to guard facilities. As of this week, Nigeria is pumping more than it has since December 2020. Nigeria has consistently failed to produce to its quota in the OPEC+ agreement. The combination of pipeline vandalism and oil theft with a lack of investment in capacity has made Nigeria the biggest laggard in crude oil production in the OPEC+ alliance. Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have long plagued Nigeria’s upstream oil and gas industry, driving majors out of the country and often resulting in force majeure at the key crude oil export terminals. Nigeria’s oil production is around 1 million bpd below its capacity. https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Nigerias-Oil-Output-Closes-in-on-15-Million-Bpd.html

Israeli special forces, dressed as civilians and medical staff, infiltrated the Ibn Sina hospital in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Tuesday and killed three Palestinian men, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials. CCTV footage shared on social media appeared to show around a dozen commandos disguised as nurses, women in hijabs, and others, with one pushing a wheelchair and another carrying a baby car seat, as they stormed a hospital corridor carrying assault weapons. Hamas said the men were Jenin Brigades fighters, an umbrella group of armed Palestinian factions in the West Bank city. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they were terrorists linked to Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and an Israeli government minister praised the operation. The disguised special forces “infiltrated the hospital individually, headed to the third floor, and assassinated the young men,” Palestinian state news agency WAFA reported, citing sources from inside the hospital. The IDF said it targeted Hamas fighter Mohammed Jalamneh who “had recently been involved in promoting significant terrorist activity and was hiding in the Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin.” Two brothers were also killed in the raid, the IDF said: “Mohammed Al-Ghazawi from the Jenin Camp, a terrorist operative of the Jenin Battalions who was involved in numerous attacks including firing at IDF soldiers in the area, and Basel Al-Ghazawi from the Jenin Camp, Mohammed’s brother, an Islamic Jihad terrorist organization operative involved in terror activities in the area.” https://www.aol.com/news/undercover-israeli-troops-dressed-medical-094403767.html

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has solicited the support of Lafarge and other multinational companies operating along the Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos Expressway for reconstruction of the road. The governor said reconstructing the road will have multiplier effects on the socio-economic development of the state, while companies who have their base of operations along the route stand to benefit more. He spoke when the management team of Lafarge Africa Plc paid a courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The governor regretted the deplorable state of the road, even as he recalled the various palliative interventions by the Ogun State government to lessen the pains of motorists. He said: “Ogun State has secured the permission of the Federal Government to reconstruct the road, which cost was initially put at about N70 billion, but it would now be in the region of N150 billion or more due to high cost of asphalt, diesel and cement as a result of inflation. “It is important we sit down and identify what portion of the expanse of that road Lafarge and the likes are going to contribute because the truth is that you are one of the biggest contributors to the condition of that road.” “Your trucks are causing damage to the road. They are carrying cement and raw materials, and most of those trucks are even above the capacity of the road’s design. Abiodun also called on the firm to employ global best practices in disposing industrial waste in its areas of operation. Acknowledging the company’s longstanding commitment to the local economy, he emphasised the crucial role of collaboration with the private sector in addressing the challenges of sustainable economic growth and job creation. Responding, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lafarge, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, highlighted the company’s 64-year history of contributing to the economic growth of the Ewekoro axis. According to him, the company’s commitment to sustainable development is nested in four pillars: circular economy, climate, energy, and people. He added that Lafarge Africa Plc has played a pivotal role in the state’s economic development, exemplifying a commitment to sustainable growth and community https://guardian.ng/news/multinationals-tasked-on-reconstruction-of-abeokuta-ota-lagos-expressway/

Good job in Oyo. Evidence of infrastructural development when your capital city is well invested. Ogun has been static with almost zero development as evidenced by lack of investment in the capital city. |

Aman was found dead inside a big cat enclosure at a Pakistan zoo on Wednesday by staff carrying out routine cleaning, officials said. The body was found at Bahawalpur's Sherbagh Zoo in the eastern province of Punjab after staff spotted a shoe in the mouth of one of the big cats. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/body-found-after-zoo-staff-see-big-cat-holding-a-shoe-in-its-mouth/ar-AA1l69VX?ocid=winp1taskbar&cvid=29180ac801384b33904964ebfb6a5e26&ei=55 "When they cleaned the zoo and the dens, they found the (animal) holding a shoe in its mouth," Zaheer Anwar, a senior government official in Bahawalpur, told the media. "The staff got suspicious and then they found a body inside the den," he said. The official described the big cat using a word that in Pakistan can mean tiger or leopard, and both are believed to be housed inside the zoo. "Our assessment so far is that this appears to be a lunatic, because a sensible person would not jump into the den," Anwar said. "You can see that the den is secured. There are stairs behind the den, maybe he jumped from there." Anwar added that the zoo staff are accounted for. Zafarullah, an official of the rescue service 1122 in Bahawalpur, told AFP that the victim's legs had been heavily mauled. "It is yet not known who he is and how he got there. It is being investigated. The body looked several hours old," said Zafarullah, who goes by one name.

The recent battle and media war between the duo was ignited on Thursday when Dangote, in an advertorial in the dailies accused Rabiu of sponsoring false reports against him and his businesses. The Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) sharply refuted allegations that it is engaged in illegal foreign exchange deals, warning those peddling the allegation of economic sabotage against the company to desist from such underhand practices. It even mentioned the name of Rabiu in the said advertorial. The company described the report as a rehash of a similar report peddled out of malice by a “competitor masquerading as a concerned Nigerian” in 2016. But BUA Group, in a sharp response attacked Dangote, accusing him and his company of trying to ruin its cement and sugar businesses over the years. The DIL made reference to unfounded allegation making the rounds in some online media, suggesting that the Company is being probed over alleged illegal foreign exchange laundering running to $3.4bn allegedly perpetrated by the Central Bank of Nigeria under the leadership of Mr. Godwin Emefiele over the years. Dangote’s company said as an organisation, it was not in its custom to respond to any spurious allegation, but that “since it is a rehash of a similar report peddled out of malice by a competitor masquerading as a concerned Nigerian in 2016, we are constrained to provide context to this issue.” “The reporting of this spurious foreign exchange allegation by some media houses was turned down by some credible traditional and online media news until it was featured as a paid advertorial in two Nigerian Newspapers BusinessDay and Leadership (Published on March 14, 2016) titled “Acts of Economic Sabotage by Dangote Cement” published in the name of David Osa Ighalo, from Benin, Edo State. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2023/11/04/the-battle-of-two-nigerian-billionaires-dangote-rabiu-lock-horns/

why Dapo abiodun got elected for 2nd term is beyond sanity. A trip from Lagos border with ogun state all the way to Oyo state would give you the worst road nightmare ever. Came in from US, for just few days home visit, I could not venture getting out. It was total disaster. I have said it repeatedly, Dapo Abiodun is guilty of criminal negligience of the entire state development. He needs to be impeached to HELL Asap. The worst governor in the country as we speak. |

The continued neglect of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway by the Federal Government has left bitter taste in the mouths of millions living in communities, towns and villages along that corridor. Beyond grinding economic activities almost to a halt, the expressway has made life brutish, short, fearful and painful. ADEYINKA ADERIBIGBE, who monitored the road, returned with sordid tales of its deplorate state. It is not for nothing that roads, which constitute about 70 to 80 per cent ratio of the mode of transportation for people, goods and services, are acknowledged as economic enablers. For one, roads are catalysts for economic growth and development, as they fast-track economic integration by opening up the interiors and connecting the rural and urban dwellers in a seamless and symbiotic manner that promote economic integration of all parts of society. Although, the Muhammadu Buhari administration claimed to have left its impact on about 700 roads across the country, apparently in a bid to leverage road transportation to catalyze economic growth and development, one such road on which it may have abysmally failed in this regard is the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, which remained, in part, one of the worst in the country. The new Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway inaugurated by General Olusegun Obasanjo, was built in the 1980s by the Murtala Mohammed-Obasanjo military administration. A dual-carriageway, it is arguably, one of the most important roads in the Southwest. It connects Ogun State to Lagos. It stretches from the Apapa Wharf running through Ijora to Western Avenue to Ojuelegba, Mushin, down to Oshodi, Ikeja, from where it gets to Sango-Ota and on to Abeokuta. Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, an 81-kilometre-long (50mi) expressway is, arguably, among Nigeria’s busiest highways, playing host to a cluster of over 300 communities and linking the people in these communities with those living in metropolitan Lagos. The road accommodates more than 250,000 passenger car units (PCU) daily (a unit of measurement frequently used for calculating traffic volume where a passenger car is taken as a standard vehicle), and constitutes one of the largest road networks in Africa. https://thenationonlineng.net/lagos-abeokuta-is-expressway-to-hell/

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A truck rammed into several other vehicles and market traders in western Kenya killing at least 51 people, police said. The Friday evening accident occurred at a location known for vehicle crashes near the Rift Valley town of Londiani, which is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital, Nairobi. Officers at the scene counted 51 bodies, but more people were believed to be trapped in the wreckage, Rift Valley police commander Tom Odera told The Associated Press. The Kenya Red Cross Society said on Saturday 32 people were injured and hospitalized, and asked Kenyans to donate blood. It also said heavy rainfall interrupted rescue efforts and people were still trapped in wrecked vehicles. Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen visited the scene on Saturday morning and said the government would relocate markets away from the highways to prevent such future accidents. President William Ruto tweeted a condolence message to bereaved families describing the accident as “distressing” and urging motorists to be “extra cautious.” Witnesses quoted by local media said the truck veered off the major highway and hit several vehicles before hitting pedestrians and traders. Witnesses shared photos of the vehicle wreckages mangled beyond recognition. Police had said on Friday rescue operations would continue into the night. The Kenyan Red Cross Society said they have set up stations at hospitals where people can report loved ones still missing and are providing psychological support to those affected. https://news.yahoo.com/least-51-people-killed-road-194118287.html (Modify) (Quote) (Report) (Share)
