The rural small holders farmers are complaining of no market for their cassava.
The main user of cassava eg the distilleries, starch processors are complaining of no raw material.
What could have been the issue?
The Distilleries and other cassava factories are in need of cassava with high starch content to produce starch.
The farmers, majority whom are smallholders are planting the low starch contents of Agbagba, Oko Iyawo etc.
The lower starch contents of cassava are mainly used in the production of garri, akpu or fufu and tapioca.Hence the market is vwry small
For farmers to have more productivity in terms of tonnage yield, market access and more money in their pockets, theirs need to experiments with new variety
The new variety is TME 419. It gives higher tonnage and higher starch contents
The yield can be up to 20 -40 tonnes per hectare depending on management
This variety is still limited in circulation. Its only few farmers that have access to it and is already using it.
This is the preferred variety in all the cassava using factories.
I will therefore encourage the would be farmers to seek for the better variety when ever they wants to plant.
A bundle of TME can be purchased for N400. 60 bundles will be required for an hectare. You can get the link through IITA or the farmers that has bought from IITA or some source
For the markets of cassava of high starch contents, Thai farm in Ososa,Green Tech in Agbara and lots more
Cassava are sold according to starch content. Walk into any of the companies with the sample of freshly extracted cassava, the test will be carried out right there and you know at what price to supply per tonnage

Approaching companies as a group/association/cooperative gives access to open doors
The believe is that group of people can not all abscond with their finances/products
Most of the present farmers associations, sorry to say dont have visions or plan to move their group yet they are the ear of the government
Government pumps millions into this moribunds associations every year.
Dedicated youth in group farming will inject new technologies, ideas and can move their group ahead
Collective efforts are easily rewarded. There will be access to markets, agricultural inputs, trainings and lot more. Information will be more diverse and jobs will be created

Produced by the fungi Aspergillus spp., aflatoxins are highly toxic fungal substances that suppress the immune system, and cause growth retardation, liver cancer, and even death in humans and domestic animals.

Aflatoxins also affect the rate of recovery from protein malnutrition and Kwashiorkor, and exert severe nutritional interference, including in protein synthesis, the modification of micronutrients, and the uptake of vitamins A and D.

Exposure in animals reduces milk and egg yields. The contamination of milk and meat is passed on to humans after consumption of these products. Aflatoxins affect cereals, oilseeds, spices, tree nuts, milk, meat, and dried fruits. Maize and groundnut are major sources of human exposure because of their higher susceptibility to contamination and frequent consumption.

The toxins are most prevalent within developing countries in tropical regions and the problem is expected to be further exacerbated by climate change.

In Nigeria, for instance, nearly 30% of harvested maize has high levels of aflatoxins and is prone to being rejected by the feed industry. In Kenya, last year because of aflatoxin contamination, more than two million bags of maize were declared unfit for human consumption in the Eastern and the Coast provinces. Some countries, such as Senegal, have lost groundnut export market to the European Union due to aflatoxin contamination.

aflasafe™ is a cost-effective, safe, and natural method for preventing the formation of aflatoxin in maize and other susceptible commodities in the field and also in postharvest storage and processing. It is providing hope for African farmers and opening doors for entrepreneurs looking to invest on a winning formula in the agricultural sector.
aflasafe™ is tossed on field soil by hand 2-3 weeks prior to flowering of crop @ 10-20 kg per hectare. Within 2-3 days after application of aflasafe, the atoxigenic strains sporulate on the sorghum grains which act as their food source. The atoxigenic strains continue to produce spores for up to three weeks on sorghum grain carrier after field application. The atoxigenic strains colonize the organic matter and other plant residues in the soil in place of the toxin producing strains. Spores of the atoxigenic strains are then naturally blown by air and moved by insects from soil surface to maize cobs displacing the toxin producing strains.

Application of aflasafe does not increase the total amount of Aspergillus in the environment but shifts the strain profile from toxigenic to atoxigenic strains of aflasafe. Each depends on the geographical area and the previous rain pattern.
In some parts of Oyo, Ogun and some south western states, planting is still on

In a developing nation like Nigeria where Rural - urban migration is still very rifle, I wish the government can implement policies that help create large farming areas around Rural areas in the nation, built for the cultivation of cash crops and essential animals, monetize the agricultural sector to encourage youth participation, force agricultural banks and other banks to relax stringent processes and rules of obtaining soft agricultural loans..
The government can't do this alone for sure, youths have show enthusiasm and drive, cos without passion no one can succeed in Agriculture..[/quote]

Its obvious many of our youth have great interest in one form of agriculture or the other. There are plenty opportunities in agriculture coupled with our good weather and climate.
But how many are willing to sacrifice for this? Forget about the e books that tells you how to make 100 millions from a plot of land in your backyard. Why are they selling e books and not just make the billions for themselves?
Who told you any sort of farming is easy?. Who told you a plot of land will fetch you billions of naira in a year. Don't be deceived.
Farming is a great and lucrative business, but it requires a lot of hard work, lot of sacrifices coupled with dedication
Most of us want to stay in the city, we did not want to soil our hands, we cant cope with village life, yet we claim to be farmers. We dream of making billions from the non fertile, over used land from the back yard
85% of the lands in the city or close to the city have been over used, they have lost their nutrients and fertility. What quantity or quality do you expect out of such?
The truth is , to break even in any sort of farming, one must have a large to medium size of land. Not one or two plot, not even one hectare as we have all been agitating for.
Most of the companies that make use if this raw materials want to be assure of continuous supply because they produce throughout the year.
Importation of raw agricultural materials is on the increase because they are sure if steady supply of goods.
How many tonnes of maize, cassava, soya beans can you assured them of supplying throughout the year from your back yard farming.
The farmers in the rural area are still using their old methods of crude farming. With our exposure and education, one can improve on the old methods.
The large expanse of land for farming can only be gotten for almost free in the rural area. We all come from one village or the other. There are lot of fertile land wasting away.
A word they say is enough for the wise. We should make some sacrifice to build the future
