ksabid: Well done Jethro, keep up the good work. Is it possible to lease government land in Oyo town (Oyo ile)?I don't know of any government land in Oyo town. There could be but I don't have any idea. Most lands in Oyo area are leased through the bales and the Obas. |
FarmTech: ..There are lots of question involved with land leasing especially that you will be far from the farm. The points are: What do you need the land for? Is it livestock or cropping? How do you intend to manage it? All these should be put into consideration before leasing land. Soil types and climates changes are also factors to be considered before leasing land for a particular type of crop or livestock. |
Pavore9: @jethro2, thanks for d highlight on standards. Even for farmers here in Kenya to supply fruits & vegetables to supermarkets, d supermarket fresh food division must come inspect ur farm, type of fertilizer used, source of water etc b4 any negotiation! You are welcome sir. Our supermarkets are importing fruits and vegetables from South Africa. The complain is on quality and food safety. Some organizations are already keying into that. We planned to copy a lot from Kenya and some African countries that has key into exporting. Its a gradual process but we hope to get there. |
Hardly would a day pass that one will not come across threads that read thus: "Advice needed for my idle funds" "Two million idle funds what can I invest in? At first glance what comes to mind is: " Was it an inheritance?" " Did one actually work for that money? or " Could the OP be seeking attention? Except for funds gotten from inheritance, its a sudden and possibly unexpected gift which one has no earlier plan for the utilization. My thinking is a hard working dedicated fellow, that sweats for the hard earned currency would have be planning along as he works. Most times I tends to think most idle funds advice write up might probably be seeking for attention. Its also possible I could be wrong in some cases. Expressing my opinion |
However, there is an EU organization called COLEACP. They have been sending expert trainer to Nigeria to train the organizations that are working with farmers. We call it ToT. Training of the trainers. A lot of underground work is going on how Nigeria can key into fruits and vegetable exporting. COLEACP partners with AFGEAN and IFDC in Nigeria |
kart042000: Please i need to understand why you said it is not realistic, most of the vegetables been eaten in america is from kenya. Please could you answer the question if assuming i was exporting to cameroon for instance. There are quality and standard to be met before exporting. Food safety standard which no one is practicing in Nigeria. Vegatables are airlift in every countries. It requires a certain limit of exposure to sunlight that is required. The planting method in Nigeria is not hygienic. A lot of pesticide residue are found in our fruits. I can keep on and on |
FarmTech: Pls hw much does registration cost?I think you should have idea of what we do before registering. This can be done when you attend a meeting. You can participate as an observer or visitor first. |
Please meet a nearby farmer in that area. They know the terrain better. You can get the beat advise from interned. Its not necessary a farm is fenced.. There are still lots of home work for you to do. Farming is not something you rush intoo |

Enough of the farming farming, farming where are the processors? Let those that can afford venture into processing. Visit sny rural area as we speak, there is gluts in the farm for cassava, for maize and some veggetables. Though processing is quite expensive to start up but its more lucrative than farming. A truck of cassavavthat use to be between N40,000 - N70,000 is at present been sold for between N15,000 - N25,000 in the hinterlands. I think youths should consider more of processing to end products. For instance, repackaging garri into smaller satchet and distributing in the university campus, possibly adding sugar and groundnut to the package can fetch lots more Packaging plantain flour and supplying suprrmarkets, and chain stores Vegetables are daily imported into our country because of the preservation methods and packaging There are a lot of things to be explire in agribusiness. Raw material are readily available in the rural areas. Find the location that suits your purpose Plaintain is plenty in Osun state, Cassava visit Oyo State, Rice visit Anambra and Part of Ogun State, Yam is there in Ekiti and Oyo. |
soladel: Every improved varieties will give you good yield and makes you profit by one year, if anybody tells you lesser than that, let him or her demonstrate it.Thanks for this Some people visit our farmers in the village with the story of 6 and 9 months. I was not in the farm during their visit. It was difficult to convince the farmers that its not true. Thanks a lot Do you work on SOYABEANS? |
Every maize farmer during the last season know there was a great fall in markrt price. Maize price per bags usually starts low and gradually rise to reach the peak. It was not so during this just concluded season. A lot of farmers, investors make a big loss by not selling their products on time Speculations were that some big men imported millions metric tonnes of maize into the country. This imported maize were considered to be of very high quantity , aflatoxin free and comes in at a better price. THE CAUSE OF THE GLUTS The maize we plants here have AFLATOXINS. Aflatoxin is a living fungus that mainly afects maize and groundnut It a cancer causing organisms that kills overtime. Its highly toxic. Most of the food that are destroyed during exports has some trace of aflatoxin. There is a specific level /percentage of the toxins that must not be exceeded. IITA Ibadan has been working on how to eliminate/reduce aflatoxin in our food products for the past 10 years. It was discovered that this fungus contamination starts from the soil, right from the farm. IITA has developed a biopesticide called AFLASAFE. Aflasafe is a biopesticide for application to maize and ground nut to displace aflatoxin producing strains of Aspergillus flavus Aflasafe is to be applied to maize farm 2 to 3 weeks before flowering at the rate of 10kg /ha. Trainings/enlightement programmes are now been given to farmers on the use and application of Aflasafe IITA has been meeting with major Feedmillers, poultry farmers and the stakeholders involved. Market for aflatoxin maize will continue to decrease while aflatoxin free maize will be the order of the day Maize farmers should please ensure the use of aflasafe on their farm. You can visit IITA in Ibadan for more details. GOOGLE will also provide a lot of answers |
