Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), said on Wednesday urged the President Muhammadu-led Federal Government to sponsor a bill for the creation of special anti-corruption court for speedy determination of graft cases. He said though the Federal Government deserved commendation for its renewed fight against corruption, the anti-graft war could not be won in the regular courts which he said were already congested and prone to adjournment of corruption cases to the delight of the high profile suspects. Falana, who said this in a lecture which he delivered at an ocassion at the Faculty of Law, Osun State University, Ifetedo, added that the regular court would not be able to cope with the number of cases that would likely be filed following the indictment and subsequent recommendation of suspects for prosecution. The lecture, a copy of which was sent to our correspondent shortly after the Senior Advocate of Nigeria delivered it was titled, ‘The justiciability of socio-economic rights in Nigeria’. It read in part, “With the ongoing investigations into serious allegations of massive corruption in the office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Nigerian Ports Authority etc it is clear that the regular courts cannot cope with the trial of the many suspects that are likely to be indicted and recommended for prosecution. “It is high time the Executive sponsored a bill for the establishment of an anti-corruption court. Otherwise, a decade from now the corruption cases which were commenced 17 years ago will remain in the docket! The proposed court will specifically handle cases of corruption, terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, advance fee fraud and other economic crimes. The proposed courts should be manned by judges of proven integrity.” Falana firmed up his submission with a recent release by the Minister of Information and Culture disclosing that that cases of 55 ex-public officers and businessmen standing trial for allegedly stealing N1.3trn in the last eight years had been subjected to an indeterminable delays. He called for urgent need to reorganise the ICPC, Code of Conduct Bureau and Code of Conduct Tribunal. He also called on the Army to court-martial military officers who had allegedl diverted billions of dollars meant for procurement of arms. He said, “It is my submission that the military officers who diverted billions of dollars and naira earmarked for procurement of arms and armament are liable to be charged under section 45 for aiding the enemy and section 52 for mutiny by impeding or sabotaging the counter insurgency operations and thereby collaborating with the enemy, section 62 for failure to perform military duties and section 66 for stealing under the Armed Forces Act. Although retired military officers cannot be subjected to trial after 3 months after retirement the limitation does not apply to mutiny by virtue of section 169 (2) of the AFA. “The proposed trial before military courts will meet the justice of the case and the expectations of the public. More so, that the Rules of Procedure applicable in courts-martial have no room for frivolous adjournments, motions for bail, interlocutory appeals, stay of proceedings of proceedings and interim or perpetual injunctions.” Source. http://www.punchng.com/falana-calls-for-establishment-of-anti-corruption-court/

Am rating him 5 because he has not jailed any politician over corruption. |
Mr Cheif judge What do u expect,When thieves ll be arrested and arraigned, after getting bail they ll now approach another court challenging the jurisdiction and competence of the former court that granted them bail to hear or entertain their case, those corruption cases dies a natural death after dragging for yrs, Mr chief judge i did not hear you say anything on order of stay of proceedings which is why many corrupt politicians are walking free today, anyway when u fight corruption corruption fights back. Before now politicians were never afraid of the courts and maybe judges were always smiling to their banks, the story hv changed now, maybe Mr president is doing something right and i know some enemies of progress ll surely kick against such moves. God bless Nigeria, it's our time, one thing am sure of is that after Buhari's govt, Nigeria ll never be the same again ,let's support this govt.Thank God for freedom of speech, freedom after speech is what am still worried about. |

A new era in boxing history, this guy can jab. |
Tyson Fury is the new heavyweight champion of the world after a sensational win in Dusseldorf. The Gypsy King beat Wladimir Klitschko on a unanimous points decision having started the night as the outsider. Afterwards, he sang Aerosmith's I don't want to miss a thing to his wife, who came into the ring to congratulate him. The new champ said: “It was a tough task coming here, that’s why he’s avoided me for the last five years. People can say what they want about me, he was hanging on for dear life in that fight all the way through. “I’ve got to give the judges their fair dues as well. I thought I had to get a knock out but they showed me that love in Germany. “He’s been a great champion, but every good dog has its day. Tonight is that start of a new era. I’ll be the most charismatic champion since Muhammed Ali.”

This case will tell all of us the direction of Buhari's anti corruption campaign, we all will soon know if it's still business as usual or the change have finally arrive esp we that have been following and supporting pmb from day one. |
scofieldsimba:Excellent idea as long as it's for infractural development purpose, but USA and world Bank will be the first to shout inflation while in actual sense that's what they do. US pays all their citizens stipends still there's no inflation but let our own govt just increase workers salary and you will see them through their agencies (world Bank and imf shouting inflation, it's about time Nigeria ignore them and be to Asia what China is. |
Onitsha – Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra has called on the Federal Government to save the Onitsha/Enugu Express Road and Onitsha/Owerri Expressway from imminent collapse due to erosion menace. Obiano made the call while inspecting the erosion sites along the Onitsha and Owerri Expressways on Saturday. The Onitsha-Enugu road has caved-in at the foot of the fly-over at the New parts Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state while erosion has cut-off one lane at two points at Okija-Ihiala axis of Onitsha-Owerri road. Obiano said erosion posed danger to human lives and business activities in the area. He said he had made contact with the Presidency after inspecting the site recently. He said he had mandated IDC Construction Company to mobilise to site and start palliative works to save the road. He reiterated that the Federal Government owed the state N25billion accruing from construction of federal roads in the state. “This is the reason why we must get permission from the Federal Government before embarking on palliatives on the eroded site. “It is very clear from the gravity of the erosion that the state alone cannot handle the project with its meagre resources because it will run into billions of naira’’, Obiano said. The governor, however, advised Anambra people to bear with the state while it persuades the Federal Government to come to its aid and save the people from danger posed by the bad roads. Obiano expressed worry that the bad spots along Okija-Ihiala axis of the Onitsha-Owerri expressway would definitely create traffic bottleneck for commuters during Christmas. The governor added that the gridlock it would cause during the yuletide would be tick due to the use of single lane by all vehicles. He said that apart from the wear and tear from excess luggage which threatens the life span of the road, it also posed great risk to travellers. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/gov-obiano-urges-fg-to-save-onitshaenugu-expressway/ |

The difference between the wailing wailers and the change agents is that the wailers are always in a hurry hence they read without understanding and they rush to comment. Now let me explain to the wailers what madam ezekwesili actually said, she likened Jonathan's administration to that of shehu shagari of 1982 where politicians were looting public treasury with impunity, she even felt pity for PMB knowing how difficult it must be to handle such an economy with very little resources and skyrocketed expectations from we Nigerians, now the wailers thinks that the woman is complaining but what she actually did is to take a swipe at Jonathan's corruption administration. |
