PoliticsSABOTAGE: Army Col, 10 Officers Set Nigerian Tankers Ablaze, Pave Way For Boko H by jimmayoy(op): 3:25pm On Apr 15, 2015
Therewere shocking revelations at the weekend that an Army Colonel, some junior officers and soldiers who were taking part in the military offensive to reclaim communities taken over by the Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa State, have been arrested for sabotage.
Top military sources said that the colonel (a Muslim) who was Commanding a team of three Armoured Personnel Carriers, APC’s, with the capability to fire up to a range of 1.5kilometres or even more, had instead of pursuing the terrorists, deliberately set the APCs on fire between Gulak and Madagali, before running away with his team of soldiers into the bush.
Saturday Vanguard gathered that the Army authorities were outraged over the development and ordered the arrest of both the commander, the junior officers as well as the soldiers under his command.
Narrating how the ‘’embarrassing incident occurred,’’ a source who was privy to the development noted that until the latest development, the Special Forces of the Nigerian Army who commenced the putsch to rout Boko Haram terrorists from Bazza, Michika, Gulak and Madagali from Vimtim, had successfully dealt with, and inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists up till Gulak.
It was said that between Gulak and Madagali, the Colonel who had all along been prided with air surveillance reports, was again informed that Boko Haram terrorists were approaching his team in six Toyota Hilux Pick Up vans from the Madagali axis.
“However, rather than blasting and taking out the terrorists in their pick-up vans; he ordered his soldiers to jump out of the APC’s and set the armoured tanks on fire, without realising that he was being monitored. This was shocking because the terrorists were armed with weaponry which were grossly inferior to the firepower of the Nigerian Army Amoured tanks. After accomplishing the sabotage act, the Colonel and the junior officers and soldiers ran away into the bush, claiming that they were overpowered by a better armed group of Boko Haram terrorists,’’Saturday Vanguardwas told.
Military sources said that the action of the Colonel and soldiers under his command had given vent to the disclosure by the top hierarchy of the military that there were so many fifth columnists in the military working against the country’s determination to flush out Boko Haram terrorists in the land.
Consequently, Saturday Vanguard was told that a Board of Inquiry, BoI, had been set up by the Army authorities to investigate the Colonel and his soldiers after which a Military Court Martial would be set up to try them for conspiracy, treason and willful sabotage among others.
Also speaking on the development, a senior officer confided in Saturday Vanguard thus, “You can now see why the Military Court Martial which is currently sitting is inevitable. The uninformed would feel that soldiers who are fighting the nation’s battle are being unjustly punished. But the truth is that many of them are sabotaging Nigeria and making the insurgents look formidable for reasons that cannot be explained. Some of them appear sympathetic to the insurgents.
“How can it be explained that several APCs that cost up to $1million each in some cases or more will be willfully destroyed by Commissioned Officers, COs, who swore to defend the territorial integrity of their nation, just to help terrorists? That is treason of the highest order.”
The source added that the new vigour and determination with which Nigerian troops had been prosecuting the war, resulting in the killing of several commanders of the sect as well as hundreds of the insurgents, was the fallout of the new position of the military high command to deal with those pursuing a different agenda from that of the Federal Government.
The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh said last week that the death penalty imposed on the 12 soldiers who were tried for treason was lawful and in accordance with military dictates. He spoke at a three-day conference organised by the National Security Adviser in collaboration with Trim Communication Nigeria Ltd on Media/Security relationship in crisis management.
According to him, “The day you join the military you have signed off, whether life or death, and it isobey before complaint. How can a soldier just jump out of the APC because you want to donate APC to Boko Haram; and somebody is there talking about constructive mutiny.
“The laws are there, if you run away from the enemy, you will die and that is what the military law says. Apart from the old Nigerian law, we abide by the military law. Nobody forces or conscripts anybody into the military. It is a voluntary service, and so if we have this type of challenge, you should be able to confront it and not to run away.”

PoliticsHillary Clinton 'to Announce 2016 Presidential Campaign' by jimmayoy(op): 5:05pm On Apr 10, 2015
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is to announce she is running for president on Sunday, various US media report.
Mrs Clinton is expected to make the announcement on social media.
The 67-year-old will then travel to Iowa and New Hampshire, two early primary contests in the 2016 race.
The former first lady previously ran for president in 2008 and is already considered a strong contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Mrs Clinton is expected to release a video outlining her campaign themes but will put off a large, formal speech.
Mrs Clinton has already made a trip to Iowa, where she came in third in the state's 2008 nominating contest
Analysis, Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter
Hillary Clinton is ready to run. Are voters ready for her?
In 2008 she came close - oh, so close - to winning the Democratic nomination, falling to the once-in-a-generation candidacy of Barack Obama.
Despite her near success, however, her effort exposed some worrisome flaws - bickering among her advisors, a veil of guarded aloofness that was only occasionally lowered and the perception that she lacked an explanation for why she sought the top office.
With a Democratic field devoid of compelling alternatives, Mrs Clinton likely has a much clearer path to the Democratic nomination this time.
This gives her the luxury of time to find her footing on the campaign trail after a long hiatus.
Come next summer, however, a battle-hardened Republican candidate will be waiting. She came up short last time. Soon we'll learn what, if anything, she's learned from past mistakes.
She recently faced criticism over using a private email address to conduct official business as secretary of state and having personal staff decide what emails should be given over to public records.
Mrs Clinton was a politically active first lady during her husband's two terms as US president and then served in the US Senate for several years.
She lost out to President Barack Obama during the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries.
Mr Obama later named her as secretary of state, a position she held until 2013.
Mrs Clinton signed a lease for campaign headquarters in Brooklyn, New York earlier this week
Two major Republicans, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, have formally announced their campaigns, but many more are expected to run, including former Florida Governor Jeb Bush - whose father and brother were both president.
Another Clinton-Bush election - the first was won by Mrs Clinton's husband Bill in 1992 - would revive the debate in the US about powerful political dynasties.
The Democratic field looks more narrow than the Republican one, but Mrs Clinton could face former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and possibly Vice-President Joe Biden.
Many in the left-wing of the party are urging Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren to run.

PoliticsBuhari Nicknamed “okechukwu” In Imo by jimmayoy(op): 9:01am On Mar 28, 2015
The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Muhammudu Buhari, was nicknamed “Okechukwu” Monday, when he travelled to campaign at the Dan Anyiam stadium in Owerri, Imo.
The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, described Mr. Buhari as the general’s general, who has zero tolerance for corruption.
He nicknamed Mr. Buhari, “Okechukwu”, translated as God’s portion in the local Igbo language.
He also prayed for the demise of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“May the soul of PDP rest in peace. May they never rise again,” he said as he welcomed ex-members of the PDP who defected to the APC.
Those who attended the rally included Chris Ngige, a Senator; Mr. Buhari’s campaign director and Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi; a National Leader of the party and former Abia State Governor, Ogbonnaya Onu.
Addressing the crowd at the stadium, Mr. Buhari said it was his first time in Imo State and encouraged the crowd to vote APC at all levels.
He told the crowd to reflect on the state of the country including the collapsing naira and therefore vote out PDP.
“It is in our interest individually and collectively to vote PDP out,” he said.
He thanked the crowd for their patience even under the sun and assured that the party will emerge victorious at the polls.

PoliticsOkorocha’s Aide Arrested For Arms Possession by jimmayoy(op): 6:24pm On Mar 27, 2015
The Imo State Police Command has arrested a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Rochas Okorocha, Mr. Okechukwu Okorocha, for illegally being in possession of arms.
Briefing newsmen at the State Police Command Headquarters in Owerrion Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, said Okorocha was arrested after operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, who were acting on a tip-off, conducted a cordon-and-search operation at his residence onFridayand recovered three pump action automatic rifles with 24 live cartridges and a Kenwood walkie-talkie.
He said the command had received information that some top government functionaries were stockpiling arms with the intention to disrupt the general elections in Imo State.
The police spokesman noted that Okorocha had acted contrary to an instruction from the police to all residents, particularly members of the State Vigilante Service, to surrender all the arms and other dangerous weapons in their possession before the general elections.
“We have been announcing that the vigilance group will not be part of the security beef up at the polling centres during the elections. As a result, we have been warning them to return the prohibited firearms in their possession to the Divisional Police Officers nearest to them,” Enwerem said.
In a similar operation by the State CID in Owerri, three automatic pump action rifles with 14 live cartridges were found in the security post of Ebuada Housing Estate in the city.
In the process of recovering the weapons, Kelechi Onuoha, Chigozie Uzowuru, Osita Obiako and Linus Aka were also arrested.
“It is believed that these arms were going to be used to disrupt the coming elections. The arrested suspects are currently in the custody of the police and they are undergoing interrogation. This is what we have done in preparation to ensure that there is a peaceful, credible, free and fair elections in Imo State,” the PPRO said.

BusinessWe’ll Only Return To The Nigerian Stock Market If Buhari Wins, Int’l Investors T by jimmayoy(op): 6:16pm On Mar 27, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan left the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange after a visit two weeks ago to traders singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”. Some investors would prefer that he keeps walking.
Since rising to a five-year high in July, Nigeria’s benchmark stock index has plummeted 30 percent and is now only 11 percent higher than when Jonathan took office in May 2010. Stocks in South Africa and Kenya rallied 90 percent in the period, while those in Zambia and Ghana more than doubled. The naira fell to a record in February, and domestic government bond yields of almost 16 percent are the highest among 31 emerging markets monitored by Bloomberg indexes.
“It’s been horrible,” Ayodele Salami, who oversees $200 million of Nigerian assets as chief investment officer of Duet Asset Management, said by phone from London on Feb. 23. “Foreigners have been getting out of equities and fixed income. Bond yields in Nigeria are now astronomically high.”
Jonathan’s failure to wean Nigeria off its reliance on oil, and save surplus revenue when crude prices were trading at record highs, is coming back to haunt his campaign for a second term in office. A plunge in crude of almost 50 percent since June risks slowing economic growth in 2015 to half the pace set over the past 15 years. A win for his opponent, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, may tempt foreign investors back to Africa’s biggest economy and spur a rally in Nigerian assets, according to Holger Siebrecht at Boston-based Acadian Asset Management.
The election was delayed by six weeks after security forces said they needed more time to defeat an insurgency by Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which killed 4,700 people last year, according to U.K.-based risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft. With lower oil prices slashing export revenues, the International Monetary Fund forecasts growth of 4.8 percent this year, about half the average of the past 15 years.
Buhari, a 72-year-old former military ruler, is seeking to unseat Jonathan, 57, in what is set to be the nation’s closest election since Nigeria ended military rule in 1999.
Standard & Poor’s downgraded the West African country on March 20 to B+, four levels below investment grade, citing loss of income from oil and rising political risks. Nigeria, which has long had a reputation for endemic graft, ranked 136 of 175 countries in Transparency International’s 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index, level with Russia and Iran.
Buhari’s APC aims to boost economic growth to 10 percent and increase employment by providing cheap loans to small businesses, according to a manifesto on its website. Jonathan said on March 12 he will sell more state companies to the private sector if he wins and encourage oil, power and telecommunications firms to list on the stock exchange. His spokesman, Doyin Okupe, didn’t respond to Bloomberg’s telephone calls and text messages seeking comment.
“We think the market may welcome a win by General Buhari,” Siebrecht, who helps oversee $360 million of emerging-market debt at Acadian, said in an e-mailed response to questions on Tuesday. “Buhari is likely to be more effective than Jonathan” at tackling corruption and Boko Haram, and managing the government’s finances amid falling earnings from oil, he said.
Acadian joined investors including Morgan Stanley and TCW Group Inc. in cutting exposure to Nigerian assets in the last quarter of 2014. Foreign investors have reduced their holdings of naira government bonds to 14 percent of the total from as much as 27 percent in 2012, according to Standard Chartered Plc. Outflows from the equity market were the highest in November since at least 2012.
“If the government had saved substantially during the period of high oil prices, the nation would have had buffers to cushion the slide in the naira and by extension the stock market,” Sewa Wusu, head of research at Sterling Capital Markets Ltd., said by phone from Lagos on March 20.
The main problem for investors remains the naira, which has weakened 18 percent against the dollar in the past six months. While the currency rebounded 1.9 percent this month to 199.05 per dollar as of 3:32 p.m. in Lagos, trading restrictions imposed by the central bank mean it is overvalued and will probably weaken after the election, according to Investec Asset Management.
“Investors are waiting for the election to pass, and they’re also waiting for the naira to devalue,” Joseph Rohm, a money manager at Investec, which oversees $107 billion, said by phone from Cape Town on March 20. “Once you see the naira devalue further you’ll see foreign portfolio flows back into Nigeria again.”
Forward prices imply the naira will weaken to 244 against the dollar in six months and 261 in a year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Nigerian stocks trade at 7.9 times forward earnings, the lowest level after Zimbabwe among African bourses tracked by Bloomberg. They will probably rally whoever wins the election, but will be more buoyant if Jonathan is voted out, according to Lanre Buluro, head of research at Lagos-based Primera Africa.
“If Buhari comes in we believe the rally will be much more sustained,” said Buluro. “It would be a breath of fresh air. The country’s been ruled by the same party for 16 years.”

PoliticsCourt Remands Two For Importing N10bn Expired Drugs by jimmayoy(op): 4:52pm On Mar 27, 2015
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday ordered the prison remand of one Kennedy Okereke, alias Agama, who allegedly imported into the country 49 different brands of fake drugs and products estimated at N10bn.
Okereke was remanded alongside one Uchendu Oledibe, his accomplice, with whom he allegedly committed the offence on March 2, 2015.
According to the charges filed against them, the accused operated at five different bases in Lagos, from where they allegedly labelled and circulated the counterfeit and expired drugs to innocent or unsuspecting members of the general public.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control listed the bases as Mosco Shonubi Close, Shangisha; Okunowo Street, Ikosi, Ketu; Bello Street, Ikosi, Ketu; Iddo Terminus; and Consolidated Warehouse, Oyingbo, Lagos State.
Okereke and Oledibe were, on Friday, arraigned before Justice Mohammed Yunusa on 12 counts bordering on importation, labelling and circulation of counterfeit and expired drugs to the public.
The NAFDAC prosecutor, Mr. Umar Shamaki, said the offence contravened, among other laws of the land, Section 1 (a) of the Counterfeit, Fake Drug and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap C34, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
He added that the two accused were liable to be punished under Section 3 (1) (a) of the same Act.
But when the charges were read to them, Okereke and Oledibe pleaded not guilty.
The agency, however, listed among various other counterfeited proprietary brands of drugs allegedly imported and labelled by the accused persons, Tarivid 200mg tablet; Augmentin 625mg tablet; Proviron tablet; Novasc 10mg tablet; Glucophage 500mg tablet; Cotecxin tablet; Rectin – A Cream; Regroton tablet; Clomid tablet; Loratyn-10 tablet and Cytotec-200mg tablet.
Also listed were Lexotan tablet, Tegretol tablet, Nizoral 200mg tablet; Analgin injection; Vitalas Tetanus injection; Viagra 100mg tablet among several others.
Shamaki alleged that the accused loaded the products into a container measuring over 20 by 40 feet in dimension.
Following their arraignment, the prosecutor said, “My Lord, in view of the not guilty plea of the accused, may I humbly ask for a day for trial. But before then, My Lord, may I ask the court for an order remanding the accused persons in prison custody pending trial.”
But the defence counsel, Mr. Michael Imonah, urged the court to turn down the prosecution’s prayer to remand his clients, saying he had already filed bail applications and served on the prosecutor.
Imonah said, “My Lord, we would not be opposing the prayer for a date for trial but with due respect, we have filed an application in respect of their bail and the application is dated March 27, 2015.
“In respect of the first accued person, we have served the prosecuting counsel and I wish to plead with your Lordship to move the application.”
Shamaki, however, said he was only served with the bail application on Friday morning in court, adding that he was opposed to it and would require time to file appropriate response.
Yunusa consequently ordered the prison remand of the accused persons and adjourned till April 1, 2015, to entertain their applications for bail.

PoliticsBuhari Planning To Build Prisons —patience Jonathan by jimmayoy(op): 7:23pm On Mar 25, 2015
Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has warned women against voting for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, saying the retired soldier was planning to build prisons if elected into power.
Speaking at a rally organised by the women wing of the Peoples Democratic Party, in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday, the President’s wife said Nigerian women should reciprocate the gesture of her husband, who ensured that a large number of women was appointed into political offices during his administration.
She said the APC was a dying party that thrives on propaganda and lies, saying that women should not be deceived into “returning to bondage.”
She said, “If you vote Buhari, you vote for prison. When the PDP is busy building schools, they are busy thinking of building jails.
“We will not allow our children to be put in jail, God forbid. We pray for oneness, we pray for unity, we pray for peace.”
Patience urged the women to come out on Saturday and vote for “the government that has provided more access to education and health care and brought down by 50 per cent the maternal mortality rate.”
“He was a former Head of State, he did not build Almajiri schools. It was Goodluck Jonathan that built the schools.
“Ask him what he did for women when he was Head of State. It was Goodluck Jonathan that remembered women,” she said.
She also noted that the PDP government would increase the number of women in government to 45 per cent if returned on Saturday from the current 35 per cent.
“They said we should change, we can only move from bad to better, not from better to bad. Jonathan has done well and will do even better if returned. They have nothing to show,” she said.
She also promised to revive the works done by her predecessors, Mrs. Mariam Babangida and Maryam Abacha, in their efforts to better the lot of women.
Speaking earlier, Governor Olusegun Mimiko, said the President would get the maximum votes because of the impact of his programmes on the lives of the people of the state.

PoliticsEbonyi Women, Youths Drum Support For Buhari, Osinbajo by jimmayoy(op): 7:15pm On Mar 25, 2015
Thousands of women and youths in Ebonyi State on Wednesday staged a rally in support of the All Progressive Congress presidential flag bearer, General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo.
The rallies took place simultaneously in Afikpo Local Government Area and Abakaliki, the state capital.
The women and youths marched through major streets in the two cities chanting songs in support of the APC candidates.
The leader of the group that marched in Afikpo LGA, Eluu Vincent, said they were in support of Buhari because of his stance on corruption.
Eluu said corruption was the biggest challenge the country was encountering, and stated that it worsened during the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
He said, “Nigerians are tired of it and want change. The kind of change we want, only Buhari can guarantee us. He was a former governor, former minister and former president. In all these positions, he left with an enviable and unblemished record.
“His unblemished record of service becomes more surprising and unprecedented, especially when one takes into cognizance the fact that he held these positions during the military era when he could have logged the treasury and got away with it. But he didn’t.”
Eluu said that the reverse was now the case with the Peoples Democratic Party government. “Massive corruption with impunity is now the order of the day and we need someone to lead us out of this quagmire.
“He has garnered years of experience in these positions which he will deploy to solve the socio-economic problems bedeviling the country, which many years of PDP misrule has worsened.”
