Me choosing not to dig further is because it would be easy to misconstrue my position based on my love for Saliba and I don't want this debate to degenerate into a White bashing because he deserves better. White was not the best Brighton defender. When he arrived, he was better than what we had except for Saliba who had to go on loan.

Off the top of my head, I remember the loss to Southampton where he had a horrible showing, you can look for the highlights but this is why I am choosing not to pick instances because it would not be fair to White. I don't think anyone is saying he is bad but don't make him out to be more than he actually is.
Lol... How do I put it? Lemme see

White Is not a 50m defender ... Agreed

White wasn't what we needed since we have Saliba... Agreed

White probably wasn't Brighton best defender... Agreed

But we signed him so we have to move forward;

So the question I'm asking are:

1.. As a whole of his First season, Was he Very Average?(Ignore the 50m we spent on him or whether we needed him and look at solely his performance at the 2021/22 season). Was it an average performance?

2.. During Saliba's injury, would we have felt Saliba's absence much if White Is to stand in during Saliba's injury while Tomi played RB towards the deciding fixtures last season?

This are the two pertinent questions I'm asking that needs answers and I would love to hear your (and other arsenal) thoughts on these

NB: Blueray.dick said "YES" to the first question while "No" to the second question, While me and Mostob was a "No" and "YES" respectively.

Lets be clear, White playing RB exposed us a lot and limited us offensively. Again, the reason White is benching Tomiyasu is because he plays better to Arteta's instruction and he is always available. This is why I have advocated for him to return to the CB role and compete for a place. Is he a good player? yes but don't hype him to be the 2nd coming of Lillian Thuram in his prime.
Lol, I'm not hyping him, infact I don't think my post portrays such.

My plea is simple: How was White first season with us. Good, average or bad?

I feel we can answer that without comparing him with Saliba since that season Is an isolated season?

Moreover, Him displacing Tomi is due to Arteta fixing him there as you said. Does that mean Tomi was average the previous season? No

That's exactly the point I was passing to iamoyi.ndamola

I am with Blue.RayDick on this one. He is Arteta's best student because he plays to Arteta's instruction better than anyone and that is why he is a first team player. I want to careful so I don't denigrate our player because I want to make a case. I will let my screenshots speak, pay close attention to the dates. This isn't even about Saliba because Saliba is levels above him, no cap.
Lol, the dates I'm seeing is prior to his signing and the match against crystal palace (2-2) where the team is still struggling for stability.
During that time his signing is being met with consternation especially as we all felt attack needed to be strengthened instead of defence.
I even join attack him and Rammy signing during the early months

Can you please bring me receipts from November upwards where he's being slated for consistently being average or underwhelming that season?

If you don't mind please

I wasn't capping when I said I remember these things.

By the way, Roland17 was proven right that Saliba better pass White Las Las
Lol, this was just his first few months na.
Seeing as he wasn't a popular signing and most of us wanted attackers, he signing (alongside Ramsdale) was met with heavy criticism, coupled with the fact that we collect for our first 3 matches scoring zero goals.

Maybe I go like see receipts deep into the season especially November upwards if you don't mind(cos that's the time arsenal and Arteta really stable)

I remember perfectly well how his first season was. And yes white gets beaten aerially. The edge white has over holding is the ability to play from the back.

At a point holding was better than what he displayed last season, he got March rusty and unfortunately had to start playing at a time we were under immense pressure to perform.

If I don't remember anything I remember how Iamoyindamola used to cuss at white when he fumbles in his first season.
Hmmm... same White?

I'm surprised to see say White was average in his first season as Rcb sha

I watched White played in his first season at RCB, he's not who u are portraying him to be here.
White and Gabriel was good in the first season. Saliba was better than him as an Rcb but White was no Average at all.

The only Reason we capitulated was because of Tomi injury which didn't make White drift to Rcb. White is no slouch passing out from the back, under pressure or evading press In Rcb position. Neither is he hardly beaten aerially or physically (even one on one contest). Most of these things Holding lacked them especially that passing out from the back or transitioning.

Maybe we've forgotten how White first season was due to Saliba

Even if white was put in to replace Saliba we would've slumped. There was nothing spectacular about White's first season at Arsenal to suggest he would've offered anything close to what Saliba offered us.
Nahh.. I doubt this.

Tomi injury scattered everything except Arteta just wan stubborn. If Tomi didn't have an injury ending season, White would have effectively replaced Saliba without much drop in quality while Tomi would have played RB.

If this have happened, I doubt we would have even capitulated against Liverpool sef

I think it has to do with Partey's form though. Baba was playing rubbish after that Westham match. Also, could be due to tactic. Jorginho understands the use of space better.
I even doubt even with the form he would have benched Partey same way I doubt he'll bench Saka if same thing happens.

The thing is that he likes Jorg(it's not a secret) so it was understandable he does such.
Even if Saka go bad form like Partey last season, I doubt he would have benched him for Nelson or anybody

Rice playing for West Ham made more interceptions, tackles, forward passes, forward ball carrying, and created more chances than Partey last season.

The only player that did better is Rodri. He is by no means a downgrade to Partey.

Jorginho and Partey has a year and two left on their contracts respectively. So I think we are using the opportunity to get a very good player for cheap for the future. Lavia is at the level of Camavinga. He will come for less than 50m.
If we can get Lavia then we need to dispose one at least.

Keeping Lavia, Rice, Jorginho and Partey is not healthy for Lavia at all.

If we get him, either we loan him out immediately so that he'll come here next season or we sell either of Partey or Jorginho

You'll now turn around and say you knew he's a CB and not a DM when he was bought and you thought we'll swallow it?

I won’t even hide my fear, this midfield trio looks really really soft.

I had to go back and watch some clips of Rice and it’s looking like Rice is a downgrade to Partey if he’s going to be tasked to play Partey’s role. I fear all those teams wey dey like bully person for midfield like last season’s Newcastle
Everyone knows Rice is a downgrade on Partey but it's just because he's young and there's also a potential that he'll improve at least to be better than Partey. Partey himself don old and with him African age, we suppose dey expect any sharp decline from him anytime soon.

My fear na this Havertz for that midfield sha. But something is telling me that Arteta would probably want to use him as a CF for aerial threat and presence. Something we lack with GJ and Nketiah
