So is Holding a massive drop off in quality? Everyone knows Holding is a massive dropff in quality when Chasing for league. It's Facts!!! When we were using Nketiah/Trossard when Jesus was injured, shebi na Brighton we dey pursue for league abi na Man city? |

We have goal scorers in our frontline and in the squad, but at the backline, tell me if we have options like we had at the frontline? So you see that a drop in quality from the backline can cost a lot Lol... You don dey give excuses na So you're saying we would have still being in title race from that December (post world cup) if someone like Werghost is playing CF for us since according to you, we have goalscorers across the frontline? |

ObaIgwe1: Except you have problem understanding my logic, so saying not winning "player of the match" is not the only way to determine if a player is good or bad means I am "belittling" Saliba and others that won it, even after I have clearly written all over here that I rate Saliba more than White? I only asked you if not winning "player of the match" makes other players that didn't win it not good players also?
I never asked you to trust me or claim that Saliba is overrated, I simply disagree with your belittling of White as a just good/okay player. If you have facts or figures that claim otherwise bring them. Otherwise let's just keep to our different opinions. For me I repeat, I will always prefer Saliba in his current form ahead of White, but should Arteta in any match bench Saliba for White, I will not worry too much. QED. Gbam!!! Like e no hard!! |

mostob: You just buttress my point the more. White is not an average defender. If Arteta want to rest Saliba, he would do so without much tension. This is why I think he is benchable when required. Another example is Martinelli. With Trossard, we are covered so Martinelli too is benchable. Now compared this to the like of Gabby, Ramsdale and Saka. That's what I'm trying to say since. Lol, na your point I dey buttress since na. Wetin you think say I dey do all these while? |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Jodera: 7:54pm On Jun 29, 2023 |
ObaIgwe1: I am surprised to read many of these posts underrating White...Honestly.
Apart from the 1st 2 matches during his 1st season when the team was yet to stabilize, I cannot remember anyone blaming White for underperforming in any of the matches he played for us till date. C'mon guys, Tomi, White , Gabriel and Tierney brought stability to our defense that season till injuries came calling on many of them.
I mean almost everyone in England blamed Southgate for not using White while parading Harry Maguire, because he is that good.
At the time we got White, only few will even think Saliba can bench him. Saliba improved the season Arteta sent him back on loan, thanks to Henry's advice to him; to use the season to make a case for himself.
If the options is to bench one and use one between Saliba and White, though I will pick Saliba in his current form ahead of White, I am not sure Arteta will and if Arteta pick White ahead of Saliba, I will not worry too much or feel bad...cos White is also very good!
PS: Who were the better defenders at Brighton when we bought White for 50M? Cucurella that was bought for 63M or who? Simple!! People will point to Saliba injury that cost us but I'll always say it's Tomi. If Tomi had been fit, White would have seemlessly slotted with Gab for Rcb and everything would have been settled. In fact, that also robbed us of our "Holding" padlock towards the end of the game. Mostob go understand wetin I mean |

Shegzdave: White wasn’t really average per se but he wasn’t what was needed to bring composure to the defense line until the inclusion of Saliba, if you could remember vividly, the media commends Arteta for making good use of him as a RB cause if he was what we really needed, Saliba won’t make Arteta drift him to the RB position.
He is decent no doubt but I think I’ll appreciate Arteta playing him in that RB position cause he is playing well to Arteta instruction in that position. All these composure in defence you people are attributing to Saliba Is not fair. That team was already on the ascendancy. This was a team that people thought might relegate (even though it's a bit far fetched) to a team that people finally blamed for not making Top 4. You think a team that lost 3 straight matches that turned to a team that almost made top 4 (infact blamed for not making Top 4) is lacking composure? We should not only be thinking Saliba, we should think Partey too. |

Spy360: I don't think anyone is arguing that Saliba is better than White. The question Mostob is asking is if you were to risk a player among the four considering the quality of their backups who would it be?
Saka -Nelson Gabriel -Kiwior Ramsdale - Turner Saliba - White
I think it would be Saliba all things being equal. Hence he is least untouchable. The most untouchable is Saka. It's like going from Porcshe to Camry. Gbamsolutely!! Na me and Mostob point be this. Nobody is also saying White is better than Saliba. |

BlueRayDick: Lolz
U made a wrong analogy with this Odegaard issue and I will tell u why I said so.
Before Odegaard arrived Arsenal once had Ozil whom everyone knows his quality and that explains why most people didn't get excited when he was pre-cooking prior to last season. The people expected close to what Ozil is known for. It was only last season when he brought that A-game everyone had to give him his flowers.
Now to White issue, most people expected him to bring that Van Djik level of stability to our defence line and that was the reason the pro-attack debators kept on dragging us in his first season when he was partnering with Gabriel.
NOT: At no point did I ever consider white poor, just that he's not that Knight in shining armour Ur argument seems to suggest he was.
Saliba was and is! Lol...now I see your issue. You've already set a bar for "so so" player and how you want them to perform? No wonder you think people aren't excited for Odegaard because they expected him to do close of what Ozil is known for No wonder you're expecting White to be like Van dijk even when almost all the fan base never knew who White was before coming to arsenal in contrast to Van dijk who almost everyone knows as one of EPL best defenders before his switch to Liverpool. No wonder you say White is average in his first season. Expecting Absolute Van dijk performance from him |

Roland17: Look at it this way..
Saliba has made the team of the season.
Gabu won player of the month 3 times during the period under review
Show us where White won player of the month as a CB during the period.
His only player of the month has come as a RB for Arsenal.
This proves that he did not have consistency in performance to win one as a CB partnering Gabu. Really? Team of the season? Player of the month? Partey hardly makes team of the season or player of the month, In fact he's hardly top3 contender most times if I'm not mistaken but you and I know that "a fit Partey would walk into any EPL starting 11" |

BlueRayDick: Just see it this way:
1. White was an upgrade to the defenders we had at the time he was signed. Those defenders were actually poor at that time he was signed.
2. White did not bring the level of stability Van Djik brought to Loserpool. Even though he was an upgrade to what we had at that time, his performance was not above average. As in it wasn't exceptional unlike what we had with the introduction of Saliba last season.
3. Saliba was clearly way above average to the extent that rival fans, pundits and sports news blogs kept on showering encomiums on him. Even we the fans could not hold our joy anytime we see the team list and Saliba is on it as expected. Lol... Saliba was like a 90/100 performance while White was a 70-75/100 performance. Let's use Odegaard as an example. Odegaard was very very impressive during the 20/21 season but few pundits nor rival fans showered encomiums on him. In fact the only rival fan whom I knew praised him was Popi from Chelsea thread and this is me who's mostly moving from one sports thread to another. But this past season, the way pundits and rival fans were raving about him, one would think it's just this past season he started cooking. While I wouldn't doubt he raised the bar and put in world class performances, I would deny that he was class the previous season. And that's the same thing with White |
