Politics / FG Has Not Increased Price Of Petrol - Okupe by Joeadamu86: 7:02am On Oct 31, 2012 |
ABUJA — The Federal Government, yesterday, decried the increase in pump price of petrol in many filling stations across the country, warning that any petrol station found to be selling above the normal pump price of N97 per litre would be tagged a saboteur and such station will be sealed. In an interview with Vanguard, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, said government was doing everything to check the trend. Dr. Doyin Okupe He was reacting to the sale of petrol in many filling stations above the official price of N97 per litre. According to Okupe, “the official price is N97. Any one who sells above that is a sabotoeur. The Federal Government will continue to seal off outlets where such happens. Very soon the Federal Government will clamp down on those who hoard. “We also appeal to those hiking prices and hoarding to stop. It is wrong and the interest of the masses should be considered. The Federal Government is doing everything to stop the trend. Nigerians are assured there is no hike in pump price any where.” Explaining why some marketers sell above the official price, chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, Delta State, Mr. Akpoviri Edafevwotu, who spoke to Vanguard said: “We sell at government approved price of N97, but the problem at the moment is unavailability of the product. “Sometimes, people buy from owners of private depots and the landing price is N110. By the time you put together all the logistics expended and under such a situation, it is difficult to sell below what you purchased.” Edafevwotu, however, said filling stations that get supply at official price normally sell at N97, adding that in PPMC, they might programme that they would load 50 trucks, but at the end of the day, only five to six trucks are loaded and the scarcity remains. The Delta IPMAN boss explained that on the average, an independent marketer spends about N3 million to buy a truck of fuel with a profit margin of between N5-N6 per litre allowed by the NNPC. “ He said: “His total profit on a truck of petrol is about N180,000 and he sells at N97 per liter because he bought at the official price, but when the petrol is sourced outside PPMC at higher price, it becomes difficult. “That is where the problem is. If you go to some private depot owners, I do not want to mention names, but whatever names I mention is verifiable, they sell at N100 per litre to independent marketers. Therefore, an independent marketer cannot buy at that price and sell at N97 after incurring other expenses. He then appealed to the government to ensure that more refineries come on stream to meet the demand for petrol in the country. Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Matrix Energy, Warri, Mr. Abdulkabir Adisa Aliu, denied the allegation that, as a depot owner, his company was selling above N100 to independent marketers. His words, “We have not sold above government price to any person”. He, however, made a disturbing revelation when he said: “Matrix has not sold petrol since August. That was the last time we got product from PPMC.” An industry source told Vanguard: “You can imagine what it means if a major depot owners got supply last in August.” Mr. Aliu said: “We sold our last product at N87 and the last time we imported petrol into the country was in May. We have stopped importation for now and the same goes for most other companies because of non-payment of subsidy for the ones we purchased previously.” He said it was a known fact that there was no scarcity of petrol in the country in the years, 2010 and 2011, but the scarcity became outstanding this year because of the removal of subsidy, the corresponding strike by the union, which lasted until March. The Matrix Energy boss said the Federal Government Technical Committee on Payment of Fuel Subsidies, led by Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imokhuede was subsequently set up in April, but even at that, companies, which imported fuel the previous months were still groaning under debts from loans taken from banks because they had not been paid. He said it was uncertainty and huge debts that made most of the companies to cut down drastically on their fuel importation, adding, “If I borrowed N3 billion to import fuel and the banks are after me to pay N50 million interest monthly, you know what that means”. With the huge demand of fuel in the country, he said he commended the present management of NNPC for being able to sustain the present level of supply. He said, “At the moment, Matrix Energy Limited does not have petrol in its stock, so it is not even a question of selling above the recommended price. When we have, we sell at ex-depot price of N87. It is wrong for any person or company to buy at official price and sell above pump price of N97”. “I do not see why government should pay subsidy to those who sell at above official price”, he added. |
Politics / Jonathan Vows To Recover Stolen Subsidy Funds by Joeadamu86: 7:58pm On Oct 30, 2012 |
Abuja - President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday vowed to recover all funds stolen by marketers from the petroleum subsidy scheme. The president also warned that corrupt officials and fraudsters in Nigeria would not be spared as culprits would be severely punished to serve as deterrence to others. President Goodluck Jonathan Jonathan gave the assurances and warnings in Abuja at the launch of a Book titled; “Reforming the Un-reformable” written by Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy. According to him, government is taking every measure to recover all stolen funds from those who defrauded the government in the Petroleum Subsidy Scheme. Jonathan, who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, said his administration was committed to various sectoral reforms aimed at creating jobs for the unemployed youth across the country. “Let me assure you that my administration is not only committed to reform, we are indeed building on some of the reform measures initiated by my predecessors. “On the governance front, we are going after those who commit various economic crimes and corrupt practices with impunity. ”As you may be aware, government is taking every legal measure to ensure that those who defraud the government in the petroleum subsidy scheme are made to pay back the stolen funds, and also are severely punished.” He further restated the administration’s commitment to diversifying the nation’s economy, with particular emphasis on agro-business and value addition in the exploitation of other resources to generate employment and create wealth. On the Book launch, Jonathan commended the author for documenting some of the important reforms embarked upon by government. “On a personal note, I see this publication as an attestation of patriotism on the part of the author. As an administration, we shall always support such enterprise, for the purpose of setting the records straight. “The central message of this important book is hope - hope that Nigeria can reform, and grow to become one of the world’s most dynamic economies. “In the past, there was a lot of cynicism about Nigeria. Many people claimed that the political and economic institutions of this country could never be reformed. “I commend this book for documenting some of the important reforms, which have occurred in Nigeria since our recent democratic transition.” The president frowned at the situation where Africa’s history, economic challenges and progress were being written and narrated by foreign authors. He, therefore, stressed the need for African leaders to invest more in writing about their experiences for the general good of the continent. Jonathan congratulated Okonjo-Iweala for contributing richly to the advancement of governance scholarship. “I am aware that many people may have read about Nigeria’s debt relief from the Paris Club, about the privatisation programme, or about the establishment of the excess crude account from newspapers. “In this book, you will find a concise, well-organised discussion of all these policy measures without the big, technical, ‘grammar’ and jargon.” He, therefore, urged State Governors and Local Government Chairmen to avail themselves copies of the book for smooth implementation of the reform programme at the sub-national levels. Earlier, Okonjo-Iweala stated that the essence of the book, which took her four years to complete, was to engender hope in Nigerians. She said the book was also meant for Nigeria to learn from her past experience to shape her future, saying that the book was not her biography. Professor Paul Collier of the Oxford University, South African Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan and Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra, who reviewed the 198-page book, all identified sound rules and effective institutions as the important pillars for sustained economic development. Terrorism is a global phenomenon its not only peculiar to Nigeria, its a fight for all and sundry we must be careful how we make some careless comments abt the govt cos we are also part of the govt, almost all the countries in the world are battling this evil menace called terrorism,i dont know what we always expect the govt to say whenever there is an attack. We easily forget things here in this part of the world, there are some successes recorded so far if we are to be fair,we must learn to encourage the govt to do rather than to be criticizing it.We must all stand and fight this evil.. 1 Like |

Politics / Re: Many Travels Of President Jonathan- dailytrust by Joeadamu86: 10:58am On Oct 15, 2012 |
taharqa: @OP d problem wit this kind of criticism is that they are too general and meant to be loud, wit little specifics to go wit - the purpose is just to criticize, which on its own is usually not very helpful. For an article this long, no analysis of d travels and why they are unnecessary, hence wasteful was made. The general theme running tru is that the amount of money spent by d president was too high( according to the writer) without giving us d critical info on whether the travels( or at least sm of them) are necessary.. Anyways, since the article seem to be suggesting that d president tk cognizance of the monies spent on these travels, I want to agree wit d writer only to dat extent since am a very very big advocate of cuts in d costs of governance ( ie a Lean govt) AS LONG AS IT IS NECESSARY. Already, one notes that sm cuts hv startd with reductn of Overhead from about #500billion to a little above #200 this yr; and of course stopping d rising thrend of an increasing Recurrent budget before 2010 and then reducing it from 77.5% in 2010 to 68.7% projectd nx year. Much still needs to be done though( and am thinking particularly of d Oronsaye Committee and odas)Don't mind the bush, that is how Sahara reporters do their shallow reports, looking for loopholes from all directions, I have never seen Demdem and his cohorts Sahara Repoters say any good thing abt Nigeria, only negativity,u cannot tell me and any reasonable Nigerian that the President is just travelling for nothing I won't believe u for once. |
