Every coach makes mistakes. He will learn from it. follow his reaction to the loss-- epic Humility017: don't mind rohr. .he so swift not to alter the defense but did otherwise in the midfield we need to stop all these experience players thing... the best should start and that's it if Agu proves better let him start likewise in the goal keeping options |

I was about to give a shout out to all forumites on this thread for not calling for the head of Rohr until I saw this. Sir the midfield has proven personnel. Rohr will improve with his combination there. We need to learn one word -- patience. Famocious: But unfortunately, Rohr didn't see it that way. He thought his problem was with the attackers . He did nothing to fortify that pedestrian midfield. I honestly query Rohr credibility. |

Agu, Ogu and Ndidi would have been a better combo. Humility017: God bless you my brother... the midfield was the problem I read somewhere the shameless onazi blaming the loss on inexperienced players the SE parades .. rather than speak the truth...that his ineptitude cost us the match....he has refused to up his game all this while... still can't make good passes expected of a midfielder... he has been wit the team for a very long time and still could not stand in to deliver.... |

How do you rate the standard of the competition compared to the previous? komekn: I concede that I had not rated Solanke very highly on account he hasn't been able to make a huge impact on his loan moves.
But in his teenage years he was outstanding seeing him in this tournament I do U turn, the guy has something in reality he is true No.9 which KC is definitely not.
I'm sure some will even suggest that Osimhen is better than him imagine. |

Yes. most times we focus on individual abilities. We should rather focus on who plays better together, not this versus that. You have a point. I think the game was lost in the midfield not because we have poor midfielders, but because we lacked good combinations. Moses Simon may be rated highly today. But that's how he always plays. Never helps the team. We need more team work at the front as well. We would have taken precautions. Starting Awaziem would require having a defensive midfielder who can also play defensively. Maybe Agu or Omeruo as DMs in front. That gives support to our CD. Yes Echiejile is not just it. TheGoodJoe:
I feel Onazi coming into the team caused an imbalance. His gaps were the problem. I do not get why he is so stubborn and caused the team so much problem.
I did not watch the Togo game but I wished I did. Deep down I believe the balance of Mikel Agu, Ndidi, Awaziem and Ekong would have worked better today. The gaps today we're atrocious.
I hope Nura Abdulahi is good because I am tired of Echiejile's calamitous plays. |

Yes French Open title definitely gives him the momentum going into the Grass season. Nadal in four sets. It will be a BIG BIG upset (no disrespect to Stan), if Stan wins. come Wimbledon come.. Icon79: Nope. Never lost a finals there. It's gonna be a competitive match but I don't think that Stan would have enough to stop the king of clay. I will say Rafa in 4 sets. But I won't be surprised if he wins in straight sets either. He's that good.
And I will put him as a favorite for Wimbledon as well, along with Roger.

Come to think of it a Latvian. Yes Nadal has all the advantage. The Freshest because he has played the shortest matches coming into the Finals. Stan just played a 5-setter. But let's not write him off. Has Nadal ever lost at the Finals in Philippe-Chatrier Court? The Grass season will be interesting. Icon79: Yeah, I was glad that Ostapenko won. I like Halep but I can't stand her coach - Darren Cahill, the Australian guy. He's an opportunist ... big time.
As per tomorrow's finals, it's gonna be all Nadal. He's just in the zone right now. The only question is: can he win the French Open without dropping a set.

Okay not to say Ronaldo does not deserve his accolades. Well back to Tennis it's already old news that Nadal vanquished Thiem just as the latter did Djoko. it's Stan versus Nadal for the championship match. Hey and in the WTA, an unseeded player just won the French Open. I can't remember when last this happened. I probably was not born then. Icon79: I can't stand that dude. The British and the American media wants to make him the best thing since slice bread. Murray didn't even win a major before the media starting building castles in the sky for him with that silly "the big four" crap. Then they were grouping Murray in the company of Roger, Rafa, and Novak who had all won majors in double digits!
He's the media's tennis golden boy just as Cristiano Ronaldo is the media's golden boy in soccer.

When South Africans have been saying they will deal with Akpeyi, that already spells doom. They should know best the quality of Akpeyi. He plays in their country. Icon4s: All attempt to give a dog a bad name.

how many goalies in the word can save that kind of close header?

We built this young team around Mikel. Hence we missed him badly today. AIG07: I won't want us to go back to that kind debate Sir. You saw how smooth our midfield was in absence today.
Mikel may not be your everyday midfielder. But the stability he brings to the team is second to non. So he is in his OWN CLASS.
To those calling for his head. Se you see what baba beji de do for that midfield? Mikel is slow, Mikel can't pass, Mikel can't initiate attack. Se una all see. An half fit and a match rusty mikel will stabilize that midfield. |

I believe I have agreed with you more times than I have not. In this one also, I do. These players have strengths and weaknesses. And that's Rohr's job to do. Studying them and bringing them together to work as a unit based on their qualities. No wonder it's called chemistry, because in actual Chemistry you have to mix substances at the right amounts to produce the desired result. Here, Rohr needs to improve. I personally think we need less individualized players in the team. For me, my forwards will have an above 70% success rate of completing a good pass to their fellow forwards. I will only allow one slot for an individualistic player. And he has to be very very very good, especially his finishing. Osihmen is warming up. Kelechi is already there. If Success can get back to his best. He would complete the perfect pair. Musa is good in his own right. He plays best as a 9. But not good enough as a 9. Sounds contradictory but true. Moses Simon should never start. I don't care about his trickery. we need delivery TheGoodJoe:
It was definitely a midfield problem and I think I will have to throw Ndidi under the bus here. I can excuse Onazi's reckless style of play because he has the tank to mop up the gaps he creates. However, Ndidi should bear the responsibility of protecting the defence. The central pair were exposed all day. It is also time we fix the left back role. We were lucky we were not up against someone like Gervinho in his good days. He would have destroyed us.
We need someone in the mould of Oliseh who is more inclined to defend than attack. Also have the ability to pick players in spaces with long gaps.
Ndidi has the quality but it is time he takes that responsibility. |

I blame that GK coach more than Rohr for that. I think we need to change our GK coach. We want a scounting GK coach, not a lazy one. We have better options in the NIgerian domestic league. They have to be tested. TheGoodJoe: I hope this is the last we see of Akpeyi. His footwork is delightful but his goal keeping skills is awful. He has no command of the eighteen yard box and the idea of him not training with the defence is atrocious. How will he have understanding with his team mates if he trains separately from them.
My biggest fear today was us paying for our decision of playing a weaker goal keeper due to his experience a devoted we paid dearly for it. No disrespect to Akpeyi but he is not just up to it. |

I agree it's more of a midfield problem. Also South Africans are not scared of Akpeyi -- bad choice by Rohr. TheGoodJoe: There is always a lesson to learn in defeat and the German tactician and his technical team needs to study the tapes carefully and know where we lack. We missed Mikel Obi today and our defensive midfield was too disorganized. It is a mistake blaming the defence because they were all over the place. We lost shape, especially in the second half and we paid dearly for it.
Awaziem and Ekong did their very best. They made loads of interceptions and won the ball repeatedly. With the wide gap in the midfield, we were going to pay for it with time and it happened. |

Pair understanding is very important. These SA players know themselves very well. Look at their cohesion and Baxter just got employed. Most of our players are good in their own right. But to work as a team, they have to complement each other. Mickael2: I have said it before, Onazi and Ndidi will never work together and forget the fact that Onazi has been working hard, his passes especially the long ones still need a good deal of work, and he should stop trying it every time he gets the ball |
Sports › Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Joebie: 7:16pm On Jun 10, 2017 |
Okay my brothers and sister(s)
Let's calm down. It's okay to take a defeat. What Rohr learns from it is what matters most. Let's take some positives: 1. It is not impossible to pay south africa back in their own coins in the reverse fixture 2. It's better we get a reality check before we face Cameroon. This was just it. 3. We expect that Rohr will be even better in player selection and formation in future
Remarks: 1. Having a good domestic league is very very important. It played to SA's advantage. 2. Baxter knows us too well. He boasted about what they will do to us. And they did just that. It doesnt look like Rohr spent a considerable amount of time studying the opponent. I made comment about the playing style of South Africa. We lacked a cohesive midfield. That's very important when playing South Africa. 3. Our forward line are too individualistic. We need more team players in this team. Moses Simon may be good in his own right. but how many link up play can he pull up?. 4. Iwobi for once should be tried in the number 10 role in the absence of Mikel. That's his preferred role. in fact in my dream starting line up, I had him play behind Onyekuru or musa and Iheanacho (the former more individualistic, the latter more surpotive). Because Iwobi is great at link up plays. Musa should have got the nod from the start if not for fasting. I think he needs time against South Africa. They are scared of him and he can be a distraction. 5. Iheanacho will offer more to the team if we stop playing him as a 9. 6. The team is lacking the right experience. It was somewhat built around Mikel. Should I say we just paid the price? 7. We must return back to 4-2-3-1 8. Etebo was the most lively today among the forwards. Outlines his quality. But today was not his day.
MODIFIED 9. Awaziem needs more experience. Should not be a starter in an important game. I was wrong judging from the non-competitive friendlies. Omeruo would have done better than last time against South Africa. 10. Our defensive options is still a problem. And MUST be fixed before our next game.
MODIFIED AGAIN 11. So you still think we have safe hands in Akpeyi and Ezenwa? |

I was late to the game. I will make my assessment after the match. TheGoodJoe: The central defence pair is simply romantic. Awaziem and Ekong are amazing on the ball, defensively strong and aware.
Onazi has been brilliant tracking back. Almost flawless. He has made tidy long passes but some terrible final balls.
Etebo showed brilliant skills running but his final ball has let us so down. Iheanacho has made some brilliant runs to give us the edge but the final balls to him have been awful and laid us down.
Ndidi showed some good sides but his running along with Onazi put the central defence under a lot of pressure.
Echiejile showed good work rate but he is leaving a lot of gap. He caused Awaziem to leave his zone to help cover the wide gaps on our left side. |
