Every new technology is like a new journey; it usually harbours an unknown destination to be unlocked by realities if anything go wrong.
It is very interesting as Google with other high-tech companies like Microsoft recently announced and are working to phase out passwords and introduce only passkeys in the nearest future. But I see a new wave of dangers ubiquitous to the new technology.
Passkeys are reliable and are sometimes faster as most of them are based on biometrics like fingerprints, face unlock, iris scanners but there must be a unique hardware (sometimes external) to read or use them to gain access to computers, phones, websites, apps or programs.
Hackers or criminals will follow up immediately by disguising a fingerprint scanner with a doorbell waiting for their expected guest to press it and unknowingly log him/herself in to any app or website whose data is already requesting for a passkey to log in.
Likewise using a tampered visitors door cameras will fraudulently scan your iris or face to log you in unexpectedly, if you are being expected by them.
Fingerprint scanners may also be illegally embedded in armrests, light switches or door handles waiting for a particular target.
To avoid this scenario, because of Zero Trust, people may be wearing a fingerprint protection gear. The fingerprint is the most vulnerable because an unconscious man's fingerprint maybe used to do everything against his will.
Lastly, in total password less settings, an authorized third party usage may not be available anymore, in the case of absence or incapacitation, users may authorized colleagues, family members or loved ones to access their private data but biometric passkeys are not simply used on proxy.
Hence the concept of solving an old problem, introduces a new one, kicks in. Apart from mobile devices, so many computers, televisions, IoT don't have biometric gadgets, for example Google and Microsoft need to add biometrics in TV remote controllers for them to be used to log in on Android televisions.
