Since you've got a background in Business and a little knowledge of DBMS, why don't you look at something related to Management Information Systems. Read extensively on it, then if you like it, look for courses that are similar to that scope (mostly in Business schl)..

Yeah. I did MIS as a course also in school. But I can't find schools doing MIS in Dublin or Limerick

Hi everyone.
I'm a graduate of Business education. Graduated with a 2.2.

After my research, I found out that there are little to no opportunities for business graduates in Ireland. So what do you suggest I do? Should I switch to IT by first going for an IT diploma or apply for a masters directly?

PS: I did some basic IT courses during my undergraduate days. I did DBMS, Data management, file management and introduction to computer.

Lastly, I have no sponsor. Can I sponsor myself by tendering my bank statement?

I'm currently in Nigeria, hoping a day will come when we travelers can travel without having to isolate for 2 weeks. I look forward to putting everything together to present to people as the good and ugly side of Asian countries but it definitely won't be complete without experiencing a powerhouse like Vietnam.
Frankly of all the experiences Thailand takes the cake as it is where i have spent most of my adult life.. one thing is for sure no one can really hate the country. The key to navigating Asian countries is to just submit your Ego at the airport before entering anyone of them because going with an open and clean mind will open doors you thought were impossible to open.
One thing I can advocate for is if you're qualified, brave and diligent you won't suffer and truly we the guys have it easier in these countries than the ladies. So, that's why I especially salute Whyna because I know how tough it can be for women over there and how even most times your own brothers are the ones exploiting you.

Definitely at the turn of the year I'm packing my bags, looking to spend even more time in Singapore (cleanest place by a mile). So stay tuned maybe my lazy hands will get typing soon with pictures.

That would divert from the purpose of this thread... I would create another thread for that but I'm like everyone here genuinely curious about Vietnam.. But I've taught in Thailand, Cambodia and i've gone on trips to Singapore, Malaysia (best food of all) attended conferences in the Philippines, oh and also a few visa runs to Myanmar and Laos( beautiful women). Unfortunately I've not had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam, I remember visiting the embassy last year Siam, Bangkok and they exclusively asked what passports I was applying to and told me I had to join a tour group to visit Vietnam or have a company or individual vouching for me before entry, this turned me off and I was frankly angered by the restrictions which only seem to apply to Nigerians only (I mean Cameroonians, Ghanaians are welcome without much scrutiny). I instead chose to visit visa free Maldives and had a good time with friends.
One of the ladies I was traveling with suggested visiting the visa free island "Phu Quoc" in Vietnam but you won't be allowed into the mainland I calculated visiting Maldives was the better choice of island.
As for teaching (especially in Thailand) I can tell you the pay is decent, you would make your bills but you won't be anywhere near upper middle class unless of course you have your own side business to move things along. Students are extremely cooperative and willing to learn but you gotta deal with the pay gap between NNES and NES (which somehow they think it's anyone with a white skin).

A guy here once created a thread of his experience in Thailand and it was really an eye-opener. I'll trade anything to read about your odyssey and exploits in these Asian countries. Should we look forward to reading your thread? Are you still in Asia?

Great job Whyna, for this wonderful thread and especially for highlighting your efforts in securing a job in Vietnam. I am personally looking to visit and scout vietnam for opportunities, having travelled around and worked in Asian countries for most of my Adult life till date, I will like to know just how friendly vietnam is to those who wish to go the business route (1), having worked as a NNES teacher before, I don't especially fancy it because of the wage differences with the NES teachers but how easy is it to really secure this job as a NNES and what is the expected salary (2). Thanks for your time. And either way I will make my way soon to Vietnam as it remain the only South East Asia country I haven't been.

Why not tell us about your experiences in the SE Asian countries you've taught in. It'll be useful for prospective ESL teachers in this forum and it'll help in choosing. You know since VT is not opening borders now, they might switch to other SE Asian countries. Thanks.

Hello. Firstly, I suggest you read up past pages, and research the school(s) you're interested in to see how you meet the eligibility requirements. Your 'chances' for admission are determined by the school and your profile.

Secondly, I'm not sure about which waiver you're referring to, that you say is now a requirement for Visa issuance. Whether it is application fee waiver, tuition fee waiver, or GRE waiver, it's hard to tell. You probably need to be more specific. Again, reading up past posts will likely answer most of your questions.

The gurus in the house may be better positioned to respond more comprehensively.

I graduated with a CGPA off 2.82 in Business administration. What are my chances of getting admission and probably a waiver(since that's now a requirement before visa is issued)?

Then sent my documents
They sent the COE via mail
I took it to the embassy and got the visa

Ma'am, did you submit TEFL? And which site or SM did you use in applying. I thought Japan don't accept NNES. This really brightened my mood

This is the power box I was talking about. You’d find this virtually everywhere around the cities, all you have to do is scan with your wechat or Alipay and one of it will pop out, when you’re done you just find a similar box and put it back in

This is unpopular opinion but I got to put it here. Some Asian countries are lightyears ahead of America and all European countries. This is a wonderful initiative. Let me put more effort into gaining admission into any Chinese school.

That's the best advice. You don't need to be told.
70% of Lagos state private school teachers earn less than $60 a month. That's our bitter reality, but who are we to narrate our plights to? The reason why teaching job is not profitable here is that, it's the only available job and schools prefer employing quack teachers so as to pay underpay them. It's saddening.

Wetin you wan use lesson note do?? The school provides a detailed syllabus and lesson plan. Some even provide the ppt.

Yes you're absolutely right about your first statement. However, if you're smart, you will teach yourself and learn fast

Edit: Forgot to mention you can actually choose the level you want to teach. You will be limiting yourself and may have to wait for specific opportunities but there are people here who for example only teach kindergarten

From my findings, after the border has been opened, the teaching market competition is going to be stiff! Native speakers are making teaching the English like their birth rights and Non native speakers are not ready to accept that. I envisage that the VT government will want to make teaching requirements more stringent. Let's brace up and expect the unexpected.

I'm sure tourism is just one of their major exports, they should have something else stabilising the economy. They make and export clothes also

I'm truly sorry for the silence. Twas due to the following reasons....

1. Work load. I'd honestly say this month is the first month I really workee and made good mula as in 7 figures. Also means less rest but man pikin don dey rest since so we good

2. I've been ill. Guess it's the change in weather but after taking drugs, I'm better now. This is the second time I'm under the weather and having to take medication. I noticed their drugs work faster than what we have back home and they don't pack plenty plenty drugs. Just the necessary dosage required to make you well again

The first time, I had malaria like symptoms, went to the pharmacy and explained the symptoms, was given just one dosage of drugs. Sh** knocked me out and had me sleeping for almost 24 hours and I felt better

3 days ago, I was down with flu, cough, sore throat and fever. I'm better now

3. There really is nothing to update as it's just same old. Work, borders still closed etc. But I understand the need to drop in every once in a while to encourage you guys. If I don't, please drop your questions and I'll answer in the meantime. My schedule is thankfully crazy now


In other news, some people have started entering the country. These people are those their company presented and processed all documents required for entry to the government. They also paid $100 a day for 14 days quarantine when they get in. Quarantine used to be free but no more. So only these experts are the ones able to bring in people. They are very big companies and some international schools

I'm still envisaging that borders will remain closed until after TET holiday in February as they wouldn't want to risk it. Hoping for April/June thingy will change

The VT government are not going to open the border anytime soon...maybe after there's a covid vaccine sha. The closed border means less teachers, more jobs. Milk the opportunity ma'am.
