Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has claimed the media reports of a bomb explosion in Lokoja on Tuesday, July 26, were “untrue” and “misleading”. His reaction follows media reports that a loud explosion was heard in the premises housing the office of the Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Dr Folashade Arike Ayoade. The office premises is next to Lugard street, housing the Kogi State council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat. The loud explosion was heard around 8.30 am on Tuesday as journalists gathered to prepare for the day’s assignments. But the governor in a statement signed by his Chief of Press Secretary, Onogwu Muhammed, described the report as “fake news,” claiming there was no bomb explosion in the State. “The attention of the Kogi State Government has been drawn to a false and misleading publication in the media platforms captioned: “Explosion Rocks Kogi Government Office”. “The government is miffed and views this publication as malicious, false, misleading and a calculated attempt to cause panic and undermine the already improved security situation in the state. “May we, at this point, state the true facts surrounding the incident that actually occurred earlier this morning of 26/07/2022 around the Ministry of the Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, opposite Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre, Lokoja. “There was a distressing call to the police regarding an object that looked like an IED placed on the fence of the Ministry of Local government and chieftaincy Affairs, opposite Mohammad Buhari Square, Lokoja. “The Bomb Disposal Unit at the Nigerian Police Force Command located a minute away from the scene was immediately deployed to the area. “On arrival, they found out that it was a plastic bottle and a can of insecticide wrapped together with a power source to look like an IED. It was discovered to be a hoax and the object was removed by operatives of the Bomb Disposal Unit. “However, there was no explosion around any government premises in Lokoja as reported by some media platforms. “The state government considers the publication as not only unprofessional but also believes it’s at variance with the ethics of the profession of journalism. “For the sake of emphasis, we would like to put the record straight that there was no bomb explosion whatsoever in Kogi Government House or offices in Lokoja metropolis. “The government commends the good people of Kogi for their unalloyed support given to the security agencies in the state and enjoins them to disregard false news as it is capable of causing palpable tension as well as instilling fear in the state, while urging them to go about their normal businesses as there is no cause for alarm,” the statement read. Verification Quest Times findings show that the State Commissioner of Police, Edward Egbuka, confirmed there was an explosion as against the governor’s claim. “Yes, what happened was that we were informed of a package that looked like a bomb was left on the premises and I immediately deployed the bomb disposal unit there to assess the object. “The object was immediately blown up. The explosion you heard was the handwork of our bomb disposing unit brought about by their efforts to blow up the object,” he told PUNCH. An insider (name withheld) who spoke to Quest Times reporter via telephone also confirmed there was a bomb explosion adding that “I don’t know why the governor (Yahaya Bello) denied it”. Conclusion Relying on available data, Quest Times can confirm that there was a bomb explosion at the government office, which was detonated through the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kaduna, Senator Shehu Sani has called on Nigerians to elect leaders that will restore the glory of Nigeria in 2023. Nigerians have expressed deep worry and concern following the news of the attack on soldiers of the Presidential guard brigade by terrorists in Abuja on Monday, July 25, 2022. The Quest Times reports that terrorists ambushed soldiers attached to the 7 Guard Brigade who were on a patrol along the Bwari-Kubwa road. The attack was confirmed by the spokesman of the 7 Guard Brigade, Captain Godfrey Anebi Abakpa, who disclosed that the attack was successfully repelled, stating that a “few” soldiers who were injured had been evacuated to the hospital for treatment. “They were attacked, and the attack was successfully repelled. We had a few (men) wounded in action who have been taken to the hospital and receiving treatment,” Abakpa said. But in a report by Daily Trust, three soldiers were said to have been killed in the ambush on Sunday night, with Lieutenant Ibrahim Suleiman and Captain Samuel Attah identified as casualties. One of the clergymen seen at the unveiling of Senator Kashim Shettima has opined that a Muslim-Muslim ticket was not a crime, saying God can use anybody to fix Nigeria. President Muhammadu Buhari has donated 10 rams, two cows to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC ) members serving in his hometown, Daura, in Katsina. He also donated a sum of N1 million to the corps members in a bid to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir. The President made the donation during the Sallah celebration with the NYSC members on Saturday in Daura. He commended the scheme for keeping up the dreams of its founding fathers as it was established to ensure unity and national integration. Buhari said that the scheme was one of the weapons to unite Nigerians, saying that most of the corps members serving in Daura are from far away southern states. He said that none of the corps members serving in Daura is from Katsina State, and if there is any, it must be on health grounds. The president urged the management of the scheme to make frantic efforts to sustain the objectives of which it was established in 1973. He advised the corps members who he described as true patriots to be vigilant and be security conscious anywhere they find themselves. Dare-devil gunmen suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist group, around 10 pm on Tuesday laid siege to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje Abuja, attacking the facility with explosive devices and sophisticated assault weapons. The gunmen numbering about 300 according to eyewitnesses, rode motorcycles invading multiple military and police checkpoints in the city to successfully overpower a garrison of the Nigeria Army personnel and a contingent of Police formation who were deployed to provide perimeter security for the facility which holds high-level convicts and dangerous criminals awaiting trial, Quest Times can authoritatively report. Residents of the sleepy town raised alarm around 10:20 pm Tuesday when they started hearing gunshots and explosions that shook windows and curtails blinds. They scampered for safety and fled for their lives in the attack that many initially thought was targeted at the resident of Elrufai Estate, Kuje NSCDC officer killed in defence of the facility The attackers invaded the facility with high calibre weapons, maiming, burning, and bombing their way through obstacles and attempts by armed personnel on duty to repel the attack. At the end of the siege, a statement by the Correctional Service Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, revealed that a total of 879 inmates escaped from the facility, though 443 have been recaptured. 551 inmates are currently in the facility with 4 inmates dead and 16 inmates sustaining various degrees of injuries and are being treated at the moment. An officer of the NSCDC also paid the ultimate price, while at least 8 officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service sustained various degrees of injuries. Kuje has experienced a high level of insecurity in recent months. Kidnapping for ransom, armed robbery and ritual killings are now commonplace. Just two weeks ago, the body of Hussani Aliyu Takuma, was recovered by the police from his farm after he was brutally murdered. The Nigerian Police and Military have since doubled their personnel stationed in and around Kuje, and other adjourning satellite towns coming into Abuja. However, the attackers of the Kuje Correctional Facility in their numbers evaded the watchful eyes of the security apparatchik, who operated for an hour and escaped arrest by the state. After the attack on the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Abolongo, Oyo state, the leadership of the Ministry of Interior which supervises the agency, directed that all Custodial facilities in the country be fortified by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC. It also wrote and sought the cooperation of the Nigeria Army and the Nigeria Police Force to provide additional security coverage of the facilities across the country. Stationed permanently at the Kuje Correctional Centre are, an Armoured Tank, platoons of soldiers, and Mobile Police Operatives, with armed officers of NSCDC, men of the Department of State Security, and NCoS providing support on perimeter security. At the time of the attack, 38 military personnel were on ground in addition to men of the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence, DSS, and armed squad of the Correctional Service. Defence Minister, who supervises the military and other top government officials paid an inspection visit to the centre on Wednesday, stating that the attackers came in with high explosives to attack a section of the perimeter wall. “The incident took about 30 minutes, then reinforcements arrived. The inmates here are about 994. And when they broke out, because this people came specifically, we understand they are Boko Haram, they came specifically for their co-conspirators, in order to get them, they broke out other people in the general population so they can escape,” the Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Bashir Mgashi (rtd) was quoted. A security expert and retired intelligence officer, Mr. Mohammed Bashir, noted that the attack on the Kuje Custodial facility goes beyond the ability of the Nigerian state to properly secure inmates, but calls to question, the entire security architecture of the Nigerian State. “I understand the Guards Brigade takes charge of the security of the seat of power. Even whilst driving into Kuje, Kubwa, Gwagwalada and its environs, you see them setting up check points, so how are the attackers able to sneak in with their weapons undetected and leave unscratched? The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, on Tuesday cautioned corps members posted to Gombe against accepting ride from strangers as a way of ensuring their safety. The Director-General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen Mohammed Fadah, gave the advice at the temporary orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, during the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Stream I Orientation Course. Fadah said it was important for corps members to be security conscious at all times and avoid acts that could endanger their lives. He listed some of the acts to include acceptance of ride from strangers, staying out late, attending night parties, visit to dangerous places amongst others. Fadah, who was represented by Mrs Ada Imoni, the NYSC State Coordinator, however, said the scheme was committed to ensuring the safety of all corps members. He noted that the corps members have the responsibility of complementing the scheme’s efforts by not exposing themselves to danger. “The management remains committed to your security and general welfare. Accordingly, we are in constant liaison with security agencies and other stakeholders. “This is with the view to ensuring your safety as well as addressing other essential needs for a fulfilling service year,” he said. A yet-to-be-identified Nigerian woman has called out the United Bank of Africa, UBA, after a sum of N1 million was allegedly debited from her account “within 30 minutes”. According to her, the transaction was done “through OPay POS on a fateful Friday (date undisclosed)” and she reported the matter to the bank but all to no avail her money was not refunded. In a video clip obtained by Quest Times, the woman who spoke in Yoruba parlance was heard calling out the bank for not being able to find a solution to her predicament. “On the norm, I can’t withdraw beyond N150,000 on POS daily but they removed N1,000 000 from my account within 30 minutes. “I came to report the matter to my bank (UBA) and I was told there is nothing they could do to salvage the situation. They could have at least stopped the transaction even within the period I was in the bank hall if they wanted to. “I reported the matter on Friday but was told to go to their headquarters that they are the one that can rectify the issue,” she alleged. The Ondo State Police Command has released the children and other members rescued last Friday at The Whole Bible Believers Church in Ondo City, Quest Times can authoritatively report. The children and teenagers were released to their parents by the police. Recall a total of 77 persons including 26 children were rescued from the church after parents of the children petitioned the police. The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Funmilayo Odunlami disclosed this while featuring on TVC news Breakfast monitored by Quest Times on Monday. Odunlami however said the two pastors in charge of the church are still in police custody. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a flat rate increase by N100 in bus fares for all Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Standard Routes with effect from July 13. The Assistant Director, Corporate Communication, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mr Kolawole Ojelabi confirmed this in a statement in Lagos on Thursday.
