As the debate over a potential Muslim-Muslim ticket rage on in the APC, informed sources indicate that the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo is counselling against it, Quest Times reports. Accordingly to the sources, ” the VP’s advice to the party is to avoid a Muslim – Muslim ticket.” The sources disclosed that the VP explained “that the logic, fairness and justice of a balanced ticket is unassailable. The argument that merit should be considered above a Muslim- Christian balance presents a false choice. It is not one or the other. You can get all the merit you want in a balanced ticket.” Also, the position of the VP is that anything “short of a balanced ticket creates a needless tension and further aggravates some of the country’s fault-lines. But a balanced ticket certainly sends a positive signal.” https://www.thequesttimes.com/osinbajo-counsels-party-on-balanced-apc-presidential-ticket/

Presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu on Tuesday said the President’s role in the recently concluded presidential primary of the All Progressive Congress was a major boost for the country’s democracy. Shehu said contrary to speculations in the media, President Muhammadu Buhari had no intention of imposing a particular candidate. He disclosed this in a statement he signed personally on Tuesday. “When it is election season we all expect speculation to reach fever-pitch. “The press pores over every word spoken, scours every photo taken, and reports every indication suggested, seeking signs of who is supporting who like private investigators – or fiction writers. “There’s no greater intrigue for this kind of speculation-journalism than a party flag-bearer primary. “But it only comes around once every four years – or every eight following President Buhari’s second term. Therefore, the media must make the most of it. “So, what a disappointment the All Progressives Congress (APC) party flag-bearer primary must have been for those who assembled to witness a catastrophe? “No intrigue, no division, no disagreement, no defeated candidates rejecting the result, no splits, no third-party runs. “Only determination to rally around the chosen flag-bearer to deliver victory and an APC third term in February 2023. “The opposition reaction to this successful nomination convention has come by way of a counter offensive, so that we do not go on the offensive. “In some instances, there is clear evidence of a conspiracy to destabilise the governing party and defame the President. “The media are being inundated with made up stories– speculating about the role of the President in the flag-bearer contest: whether he had a favoured candidate, and whether manoeuvres were made to install them; whether the chosen flag-bearer was the President’s choice, or another. And on and on. “Speculation is easy. But facts are simple. The President always said he had a favoured candidate. He said that candidate was whoever was chosen by the APC in a democratic primary to lead the party at the election. “Those still assailing the APC and the President expounding conspiracy theories and making all manner of speculations about who did what or did not need to understand the important point about the country’s leader: President Buhari takes his own decisions and carries them out without the backup of a so-called “cabal” or back room boys. “The strong leader myth in Nigeria has lasted far too long. “People make assumptions that if you are a leader, you dominate everything, and even determine electoral outcomes. “Luckily for Nigeria, President Buhari does not suffer from such constraints. He refuses to act as the elected autocrat. “The President had a clear purpose leading up to the primary: to ensure a transparent, free and fair process that will bring back people’s faith in democracy by taking good governance up to the grassroots level. “By this alone, people’s faith and that of the international community in our democracy has received a major boost since the completion of the APC nomination. “The flag-bearer has been chosen. He has the President’s unwavering support. The journey to victory continues,” the statement read. https://www.thequesttimes.com/journey-to-victory-continues-presidency-finally-speaks-on-buharis-role-in-apc-presidential-primary/

The former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, on Monday blasted Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC. According to him, the APC standard-bearer is no match for the People’s Democratic Party flag-bearer, Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election. Twitter went berserk after Lionel Messi netted five goals for Argentina against Estonia on Sunday in a 5-0 friendly win. The forward’s scoring performance equalled his career-best between club and country for a single match, tying the mark he set in the Champions League against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. Messi has enjoyed a fantastic couple of weeks for the Albiceleste, as he played a lead role in their Finalissima victory over Italy last Wednesday. Highlight of the match He opened the scoring after eight minutes from the penalty spot, smashing the ball into the bottom corner past Matvei Igonen. On the stroke of half time, he made it 2-0 with a brilliant finish from a tight angle. Minutes after the break, he completed his hat-trick with a beautiful volley from a Nahuel Molina cross. With 20 minutes remaining, he scored his fourth to make it 4-0 in bizarre circumstances. Estonia’s defence thought the referee had blown his whistle and appeared to stop as the ball fell to Messi. But Messi didn’t stop as he calmly sat the goalkeeper on the floor before finishing. Minutes later, the ball fell to him kindly inside the penalty area and he finished for the FIFTH time. https://www.thequesttimes.com/international-friendly-twitter-explodes-as-messi-scores-5-goals-in-76-minutes/

Two days after President Muhammadu Buhari indicated a template for his successor in the forthcoming APC Presidential Primaries, Governors of the ruling party are beginning to rally behind the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo who is believed to fit the President’s description. As of last night, several of the APC Governors have been seen in the Villa meeting with the VP and also the Chief of Staff to the President in what sources say is a move likely to result in a Consensus presidential candidate for the ruling party, Quest Times can authoritatively report. Governors cited in the Villa include Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; Gombe State Governor, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya; Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule; and David Umahi of Ebonyi State. The 22 governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the aegis of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), appear to have agreed on a consensus candidature of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, ahead of the party’s long-awaited presidential primaries on June 6. The governors who held a series of meetings at the Kebbi State Governors Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja on May 31, after their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, were initially deadlocked on a consensus arrangement. However, after reconvening, a top source in the know, hinted that the governors have agreed that the Presidency of the party should be zoned to the South and that the candidate should be Prof Osinbajo. According to an impeccable source in the Villa, the governors failed to reach an agreement on a consensus candidate in their first meeting because different governors were working for different aspirants and they were all pushing for their aspirants to be accepted based on a North-South divide. Said the source “the heroes of this whole thing are the Governors of Borno, Nasarawa and Gombe who even though are from the North, argued that the VP from the South fits the bill perfectly. Kaduna Governor also of the same view but he has not been seen in the Villa this week. He was represented by his deputy at the meeting with the President on Tuesday.” The source said that some governors had first insisted that the party’s Presidency should be zoned to the North because the main opposition party had settled for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at their convention. “It was a very heated argument between the governors. Some governors wanted a Northern candidate to challenge the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate but some other northern governors kicked against it. They said that the it is morally right for power to return to the South.” https://www.thequesttimes.com/2023-apc-governors-begin-rallying-around-osinbajo/
