How exactly can I be accused of emotional blackmail? I don't see how though.

Again, true, there are poor people on the streets. In fact, one doesn't necessarily need to be poor to be in need. Rich people run into needs too, sometimes needs that money can't sort out.

But, again, helpers are entirely free to choose whether or not to act in that capacity. There is no blame existing anywhere in the world to cast at them...especially when they have been helping for decades.

My natural reaction to the news of America's withdrawal as we've all read here is deep sadness. I do feel for those that will be directly or indirectly affect (note that WE ALL will be affected, directly or indirectly). But, I had to establish objectivity; these guys have done a whoooooolllleee lot for us and other nations like us. I surely cannot blame them for their decision. Nope. May I not stand any day to throw blames at anyone that once helped me in the past...yeah, it's how I see it.

What is even more annoying is that if our leaders were serious, we would most likely be able to cater for our PLHIVs. It's just a matter of proper planning and honesty; these ingredients, sadly, are lacking in the heads of our politicians. We are not like any other nation that may be truly unable to cater for their PLHIVs.

May God help us all.
I agree. In fact, our government ought to step in and take over now that the Americans are withdrawing support for these vulnerable people. But that's something I'll say to our government in another thread. This one is for calling out Trump. smiley

TONYE001:
Trump is less than a month in power. You and I would have to patiently wait to observe the ripples of his decisions before we conclude whether he is worsening the situation of poor Americans.

Giving remains an act of benevolence, not obligation. Glad we both agree on this. Any day my helper decides not to help me any further, rather than cast blames at him, I'd thank him for the years he has helped me, and probably hate myself for not working my way out of a being in need of his aid.

And, no, I am not rich; whether I help others or not is far from our current discussion. And while we are making moral arguments out of a giver's decision to discontinue in his act of benevolence, we should note that we would be found guilty in the same moral compass - feeling entitled doesn't sound like a good moral endeavour.

About the proportion narrative, you are perfectly correct here...it's biblical, as a matter of fact. But let's look at effects, outcomes, or impacts. If by the law of proportion America gives way more than others, this still proves the fact that they are mostly responsible for the positive outcomes end-countries experience; so, they still do more work. By the way, if we go the proportion way, shouldn't China (to be fair, let's not consider India) be a bigger/better giver?

As I see it, quoting morality is an attempt to emotionally blackmail Trump and his country, and this is entirely unfair. I still maintain that for the years of good America has done, they should be forever appreciated....even if they decide to re-strategize their expenditure with hopes of prioritizing their citizens.
Trump’s policy thrust involves tax cuts and tariff hikes. The effect on the poor is fairly predictable. To expect otherwise is to HOPE. Which is fine.

China has made huge progress, but no, they’re still not nearly as rich as the US. But I agree they too are paying proportionally far less than they should be doing and the Americans are right to call them out.

There will always be people who, through no fault of theirs, are too weak to help themselves. That's why we make moral arguments. I hope you realise you can also easily be accused of using emotional blackmail to get people to ‘leave Trump alone’? Yes, the poor should hustle and stop being dependent. But we know it’s not that simple. You pray not to be poor, but the poor will always be here. I’ve actually taken time to listen to homeless people in rich countries – you’d be surprised what you hear. There are lazy people who are poor. But there are people who aren’t lazy, perfectly normal, hardworking people who are poor. Sometimes, all it takes is one or two tragedies away - kidney dialysis, glaucoma, a fire incident, and you're out in the streets.

Remember who we’re taking about here – sick people. The world is what it is.

TONYE001:
Great response; I like your balanced view.

1. Rich nations helping poorer countries is not an obligatory arrangement or agreement. It's entirely up to them to decide to continue providing help, or not. As much as 55% of Americans cannot afford healthcare readily. The American housing problem is general knowledge so I won't bother quoting any stat. My point is, Trumps citizens have got major problems. I see nothing wrong if he has decided to reroute funds to prioritize his citizens. I don't get why people are blaming the man, honestly. Do note, however, that this is just HIV and related issues. Our country still enjoys other aids from the USA.

2. I honestly don't think Trump's decision, or series of decisions, in the past few days are hit backs at anti-Americanistic societies or groups. Sincerely, I do think these are frank efforts to ensure his citizens become and remain priority.
This reminds me of a conversation between a rich doctor and poor guy during the campaign.
Poor guy: Trump will lower my taxes.
Rich doctor: No, you idiot. He will lower MY taxes and cut YOUR benefits.

Trump is not even prioritizing citizens. Well, not poor citizens. Something else is going on. Note he's been targeting the Affordable Care Act (which they call "Obama Care" ) since his first term. He's simply taking and taking from the vulnerable, starting with the vulnerable of America.

Yes, giving is the prerogative of the giver. It's not obligatory. You choose what to do with what you own and no legal argument can be made against you. However, we can and will always make a moral argument. That is why, sometimes when some Americans go on and on and about how they're the biggest contributor to global agencies, they are reminded that some other countries contribute far more than them by PROPORTION. I don't know if you're rich, but does not being rich and having problems of your own mean you don't assist poorer relatives, friends or church members? That's how it is.

Blame your government who wants to join BRICS.
They should start asking China and Russia to give them the AID.
TONYE001:
I've worked with an international HIV-care-delivering NGO; I know the implication of this piece of news...and nope, I'm not celebrating it. It is indeed a sad day for our PLHIVs, their relatives, and the government as the burden of the disease is about to skyrocket.

The above is true.

But it is also true that Trump did not do anything wrong in this decision. It is not the responsibility of America to care for our sick. The man is simply prioritizing his country and citizens, and I honestly admire his moves...right from his first term as president.

We must maintain objectivity. It's hypocritical that our government take antagonizing positions in international policies as regards the USA, many of us have negative thoughts towards the country...and in the same breath, we want to continue benefiting from their policy. Why?

Our leaders and their corrupt heads should be held responsible for their longstanding failure to care for their sick populations.
I agree it's hypocritical to be cussing out America while seeking their help (instead of seeking it from Russia), but I beg to differ with your entire post.

1. Rich nations have always helped poorer nations, so Mr Trump has done something wrong. Note that there is a national interest component to foreign aid because it's how you maintain soft power, something Trump clearly doesn't get. Withdrawing help from poor and vulnerable people (which will worsen your refugee and immigration problems anyway) is unconscionable. Yes, it's the responsibility of our government to care for our sick, but we both they aren't going to do it. Even if they want to, the money is just not there. So this hurts the sick and vulnerable, not government people.

2. It's true that anti-Americanism is common in these parts but so is pro-Americanism. There is no evidence that any Nigerian government since 1999 has been overtly anti-American. They've all done their best to maintain a healthy relationship with the US. I thought the BRICS thing was a mistake, but that's a minor issue. Tinubu has been careful not to personally attend their functions (he sends his vice) or apply for full membership. BRICS isn't the reason for this action anyway. It's what Trump wanted and was bound to happen.

Well, it's complicated. Congo was never a country and no one has ever tried to make it one. It's always been a collection of mines where powerful people make money. 14 million people who're together will beat 150 million who're fragmented any day.

There are people who get away with anything. Just anything they do. Kagame is one of them. His forces are firing on UN peacekeepers (several, including 3 South African soldiers, are dead), yet no consequences so far.

The Brits have not been calling him out in recent years because they're looking at him to help with their refugee problem. The French have not been doing it because he's helped with the conflict in Mozambique, where the French have mineral interests. Only the Americans have been calling him out lately, but I guess their mind is elsewhere right now.

So Kagame carry go.
