FreeStuffsNG: Wrong pricing Basic economics asserts that when prices rice, especially for price elastic goods and services, demands fall ceteris paribus. They will learn to get their price right next time. Food prices rises are mostly fueled by cost of input and transport. If the PRICE consumers are willing to pay is less than the price at which they can break even and make a reasonable profit, many of them will stop farming. And then prices will go up some more. |

G0Oodharddick: Inasmuch as the above write up are entirely true, the language barrier is same.
In Lagos, you can't speak English because you'll get a response in Yoruba. It is logical to find northerners more in Lagos than in anambra. The SE is predominantly Igbo speaking region. Walk up to anyone and speak Igbo and you'll get a response back in igbo.
1. Initially onitsha has lots of agberos but today Lagos is leading in terms of agberos! 2. In SE as a whole, Catholic and Anglican seems to be the dominate churches there and hence must not be criticize, unlike in Lagos or SW. 3. In anambra, most people are not interested in white collar jobs, or getting government jobs they prefer doing business instead unlike in Lagos 4. In anambra and SE generally, their women are highly Manipulative and strictly in the lookout for money, they are extremely money conscious 💰 they call their SIMP men "odogwu" , while in Lagos and SW as a whole, their women are also in the lookout for money too, but too dull to manipulate a man. Lol at bolded. |

bigpicture001: Having lived all my young to mid adult life in Lagos and then being transferred by my firm to it's Anambra branch , I have now lived here for over two years... These are the differences in life style I noticed
1. Business are late to open in the morning in Anambra compared to Lagos
2. There very few or non existent road side mechanics, most mechanics are in a street inside a compound and fenced unlike Lagos
3. There is still high sense of morality and believe in God in this part of Nigeria by majority of of the people bar the student areas where culturi and believes are imported from various part of Nigeria unlike Lagos
4. There is low level of northern population throughout the state unlike Lagos
5. Most nysc corpers are southwestern and igbos
6. Inside the public transport a new entrant greets the old sittight ones... Unlike Lagos
7. In Anambra, keke driver or bike rider would give u the money to go look for change in cases of no change btw him and customer while he waits for ur return , reverse is the case in Lagos
8. In Anambra , both driver and persongers will reject money to the floor in cases of incorrect disputed price of fare... All allowing ur conscience judge u... In Lagos it results to fight...
9. In Anambra, house rents are very high just like Lagos.. but transport is cheap
10. In Anambra there is a few major fuel marketers mostly filled with unknown names
11. U hardly see anyone criticize a preist of a catholic or Anglican church...
12. In Anambra, student decision of department to follow in senior secondary Begins from SS2 rather than in SS1 in Lagos
13. The senior secondary skls in Anambra are divided to just science or art, while in Lagos it is science, commercial and art.
14. Girls in Anambra are strongly money incited...they judge u by how much u show off..maybe same with Lagos sha
15. Banks are the highest paying private jobs in Anambra unlike Lagos where unknown companies pay huge surprise wages.
16. In Anambra the predominant jobs of the yorubas is tailoring, they are better trusted by the clients than indigenous tailors... Wow. Very interesting. |

unbiasedTruth: Yorubas typically lack respect for elders that are not in their family. They only show lip service respect to family elders and when in public functions.
I was born and raised with them. Macphenson: You are so right on this. She's not so right on this. Yorubas will show you "respect" even if you're a stranger. Just be older or be an important person. The problem is that it's all performance. Just kneeling prostrating and all that. Most of the prostrating and kneeling types have no clue what real respect means. |
Food › Re: Have You Noticed The Sudden Trend Of Big Chickens In Nigeria? by JuanDeDios: 5:27pm On Jan 02, 2025 |
emmy512: December of last year marked the first time I came across a chicken so big and heavy that I had to stop and wonder. It’s not something you typically see around here, and I’d imagine the same goes for other states as well.
Initially, I thought it was just a rare exception when I received two hefty chickens as gifts. They were so massive that I almost doubted they were the regular chickens we’re used to seeing. Each one cost up to ₦28,000 a price far beyond what we’d usually associate with the common poultry we know.
However, my visit to the market recently revealed something surprising. Chickens just as big as the ones I received were everywhere! Stall after stall, it was the same big, heavy birds ready for sale. It got me thinking: why the sudden shift?
Where did all these oversized chickens come from? Why weren’t they as common before the end of 2024?
It’s curious how this trend seemed to pop up almost overnight. Could it be that something new is being used to grow these chickens faster and larger? Were there advancements in poultry farming techniques that suddenly became widespread? Or is this tied to some kind of new feed or growth-enhancing practice that wasn’t used before?
More importantly, should we be concerned about potential health implications? If these chickens are being bred or enhanced in ways we don’t fully understand, could there be side effects for consumers down the line?
I can’t help but wonder if others have noticed this trend too. Does it feel suspicious to you, or do you think it’s simply a result of improved farming practices? Share your thoughts have you encountered these big chickens recently, have you been seeing them often before ending of last year? and do you know what might be causing this sudden boom?
Maybe it's only me that's noticed this
While you are here, you can check out my other topic I think you're a very smart person to be asking these questions. The fact is that food production, processing and sale are not regulated in Nigeria. So farmers, wholesalers and market women use anything in any quantity and at time - which they feed to the unsuspecting public. Ideally, someone needs to investigate this and assure the public that nothing untoward is going on. Anyway, I'll stick to my local chicken for now. |

Family › Re: Bride Price And Dowry Are Not The Same Thing And Can't Be Used Interchangeably by JuanDeDios: 10:07am On Jan 02, 2025 |
Mynd44: I have heard Nigerians use "bride Price" and "Dowry" interchangeably and they seem to think they are the same. People just assume the bride price is the dowry or that they mean the same thing but this is a wrong assumption.
I knew this in Social Studies when I was in Primary 5 and it shocks me when people who I think went to school around the same time (not the current era where I don't understand the curriculum) make the same mistake. Perhaps people just think because they are both possessions and gifts exchanged around the time of a wedding they mean the same but nah. They are very distinct things.
So here is the major difference
From the definition above
1. Bride Price is given to the family of the bride by the groom and/or his family and this is mostly set by the Bride's Family.
2. Dowry is the property or money given to the bride by her family when she marries and she takes these things to her marital home.
In some cultures, Dowries cannot be sold by the couple as it is wealth that passes through only the female line so only the bride's daughter can inherit them. Thats why you see where some families have jewelry that their great grandmother used and a female descendant still wears it. It can even be shares of a company etc.
There has been cases in India and Northern Nigeria called "Dowry theft" in these cases, they grooms family (mostly committed by the groom's family) tries to convert the properties of the bride and steal them. I know India had to pass legislation against it. Sometimes, the husband himself tries to steal these possessions.
Note also that in a divorce, the husband cannot lay claim to the dowry as these are personal gifts and are mostly acquired before marriage so are outside the purview of shared items.
In Nigeria, dowries can include, Kitchenware, livestock, land, jewelry and in some parts of the north, the father actually buys furniture.
Note that Dowry is not wedding gifts given to the couple. These are gifts for the two of them. Na today? There are many words we use like this. |

turmacs: Nigeria is the last remaining major Western strong hold in West Africa. If Nigeria manages to fall into the hands of an Anti- western government, just like Niger, Chad and the others have fallen, mark my words, that would be the end of Neocolonialism and Western imperialism in West Africa. And that is also when people will begin to understand that all these useless terrorist groups are backed by the west because they'll be dealt with very, very, quickly. What's the groundbreaking argument here? That the West is behind terrorism in West Africa because Africans are beholden to the West or that anti-West elements are terrorising W Africa because W Africans are beholden to the West? And do you mean the way terrorism has been dealt with quickly in Niger and Burkina Faso and the others who severed ties with France? Anyway, if freedom for you means freedom from foreign interests, then the countries you've mentioned are not free. They have new overlords in Moscow. Soja go soja come. The idea that Nigeria is a vassal of the West is mouthed by people who don't understand international geopolitics. It also arises from a poor sense of history that fails to see how being isolated kept us backwards in centuries past or that the disadvantages arising out of our current relationships with the outside world are best dealt with through negotiations rather than firing bullets at the problem the way the uniformed guys in Niger and Mali are attempting to do. |

2023, same experts said Naira will be 700 naira to Dollar.

But today they are saying it will be 1,500 naira to a dollar will be stability.
700 naira to 1,500 naira is progress? Right. But I think the fundamentals are better this time. If all those refineries work, we'll be spending less on PMS importation, may even achieve zero importation. That'll save a lot of forex. Remittances are also getting better. Then there's increasing crude oil output. Many state govts are paying attention to agric, that should mean less food import and better pricing also. |
