The US is tightening its screening of international students, its first security change in response to the Boston Marathon bombings last month.

The move comes after a student from Kazakhstan - who did not have a valid visa - was accused by police of hiding evidence for one of the bomb suspects.

The Department of Homeland Security has ordered border agents to automatically check the visa status of every student.

Azamat Tazhayakov had returned to the US despite being dismissed from school.

The 19-year-old appeared in court on Wednesday, accused of helping to throw out a backpack belonging to his friend, Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
No second check

Mr Tazhayakov's student visa had been terminated by the time he arrived in New York on 20 January, following his academic dismissal from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on 4 January

The Department of Homeland Security will "effective immediately" verify that every international student visa is valid, according to an internal memo obtained by the Associated Press news agency on Friday

Under the new procedures, border agents will verify a student's visa status before the person arrives in the US, using information provided in flight manifests.

If that information is unavailable, they will manually check the visa status through a US database.

Beforehand, border agents would only verify a student's status in a database, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, when the person was referred to a second officer for additional inspection or questioning
The results of this lottery will be only announced online. Unlike several years ago, the Department of State won’t send mails and notifications to lucky winners. Checking ESC promptly is important for selectees, to provide ample time for next steps in the Diversity Visa application process.

Currently there is a debate in U.S. Senate to change the regulations of Diversity Immigrant Visa. At this time, only lucky entrants are able to obtain United States Permanent Resident Card. Base on recent proposals, a new system will be introduced by 2017 in order to rank entrants, and give away Green Card according to merit.

The Department of State has also advised entrants to keep their confirmation number until at least June 30, 2014. Additional entries may be selected in October 2013.
Any official link to that claim?

bigfrancis21: My initial concern for him was knowing if he was/is under 21 years. And he said he's 19. He has no problem at all. All his mother has to do is simply include him as her son. The guy has no problem whatsoever.

Even when he was not included when the lottery was played? So the mother forgot that she has a child or the child that played the lottery for the mother forgot that she is her mother?
..i dont have any paper documentation for dis..also we are starting d contributions dis may so i might just tell d guys to deposit same in an laternative acctt to b safe as i would still have the 1million+ contract pay off in my account..got paid dis money in april..by contract pay off i mean a gratuity from my former employer..a company labour provider..sorry no one mention was made of my chances or any other additional documents or comment on d main body of my post..does dt mean am good to go?..intend applying last week of dis month but plan d trip for mid July..am i on course?..many tanx again.
Don't put money into your account for visa purpose if you can't explain the source with paper evidence(s).

It will not do your application any good. Use only the money you can account for.

spikes C: Not sure the one am gonna use yet, but it'll be my dad's or my brother's account.

Is there anything i need to provide because of that?
Like, how they earn the money?

You can only use ur Daddy or mum's account, not your brother or sister.

You don't need to proof how they earn it but you have to attach your birth certificate.

spikes C: Pls, oga justwise...

I read you say one day that money lodging does not apply for Tier 4 student visa. Therefore, one can just deposit a lump sum in his account and apply after 28 days. Pls, can you confirm this.
Note that the account is owned by a direct relative (Dad or brother)

Yes that is true but who owns the account?

Very selfish attitude, you want answer to your question to be emailed to you, why not have it here so that others in similar situation will learn and benefit?
