jl115: if that was the definition of an AH then every helicopter that has ever carried a gun is an AH.
Here's the actual definition of an AH:
An attack helicopter is an armed helicopter with the PRIMARY role of an attack aircraft This is the primary role of this aircraft. You too dull.

jl115: I corrected you..... A person who thinks an A109 is an attack helicopter You're hopelessly delusional. I said what defines an attack helicopter is simply it's ability to provide close air support. That's the definition of an attack helicopter. Any helicopter that can do that is an attack helicopter. |

jl115: Role You have lost the plot. As the Kenyan MD-530F shows, the role of the helicopter defines it's designation. AW-109K's in the Nigerian air force are used primarily as CAS platforms, hence the designation as an attack helicopter. The A-109e is used as a utility, MEDVAC in the Nigerian Air Force hence it's designation as a utility helicopter. Military equipments across the world have different designations according to the roles they are used. Japan's IZUMO class aircraft carries are called helicopter carries, despite the fact they can deploy F-35s. The Nigerian army refers to MRAPs with heavy machine guns as armoured fighting vehicles because they are not used as troop transports, instead fire support vehicles. The 45 meters vessel the Nigerian navy is currently building is referred to as a seaward defence boat, other countries refer to it as an IPV or MPV. In Algeria, their 60 meters locally built vessels armed with anti-ship missiles, CIWS and 76mm gun is referred to as a Corvette, but in other countries they are missile boats. In Nigeria we would refer to a 60 meters vessel as a seaward defence boat. Designations for military equipments are not cast in stone, equipment designations change depending on the country using them. |

Anti-terror war: Nigerian-made mine-resisitant vehicles perform wonders
The Nigerian Army said its locally manufactured mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles are performing wonders in the on-going counter-insurgency war in the North-East. The vehicles, nicknamed Ezugwu, after the manufacturer, Major General Victor Ezugwu, and deployed to the North-East were said to have dealt a heavy blow on Boko Haram terrorists who tried to attack some military locations in Borno State, with heavy casualty. Scores of the terrorists were killed and several arms and ammunition, equipment, food items, drugs and improvised explosive devices (IED) recovered by the soldiers. The army said the indigenous pro-force MRAP employed during the encounter proved to be a reliable fighting machine, as it provided the required mobility, protection and firepower for the troops. It noted that the lethal war machine has proved beyond reasonable doubt that Nigeria was successful at local defence equipment manufacturing. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/army-trains-452-commissioned-officers-in-regimentation-leadership/

Stargate254: For future reference
This is Manda Naval base where Camp Simba and Camp Kiboko are located,
That area they are patrolling, you see that grey stuff on the pic you posted? that's the ballast , found in and around the American camp (you can see it up-close on the last pic)
The Naval base itself is very expansive, Its about 4km lond and 3km wide so thats 12km.sq right there, and it goes all the way to the beach, As you can see about 70% of the naval base is under-developed... That whole area needs patrolling and that job fell solely on the Kenyans, I suspect that's gonna change now and we will start to see more joint base protection, or atleast the Americans will want to be assigned some shifts on the base security.
(This is Fidha254 BTW, the other account has been telling me to wait a few hours to post... its been 2 days now so I decided to create another account.) Your analysis has been in depth. Now I understand better. |

LTGEN: I just want someone to tell me when the HELICOPTER is used to fire its mounted guns is it still regarded as a transport HELICOPTER or when it makes its first kill it becomes a NON- DEFENSIVE HELICOPTER. It is what the service intends to use the helicopter for that defines it's designation. If a service intends to use the A109 primarily as a Close Air Support helicopter, that's what it is. If a services intends to use the helicopter as a transport helicopter, that's what it would designate it as. Take for example Colombia, UAE, Belgium just to mention a few countries. |

jl115: It's an A109 mate.... Not an attack helicopter.... Mounting a gun on it doesn't change the fact that it's a transport helicopter Please read. An attack helicopter is an armed helicopter with the primary role of an attack aircraft, with the capability of engaging targets on the ground, such as enemy infantry and armored fighting vehicles. Due to their heavy armament they are sometimes called helicopter gunships. What's the primary role of the helicopter in the NAF service? |
