pleep: You can help yourself who gives a damn. in talking about helping my country nigeria. U forgot to mention that the average American makes 50k a year while the average Nigerian makes $700.
I don't know were u live but the magority of nigerian immigrants are middle to upper middle class in the U.S. We are also The most educated immigrant group in the country. (I may provide a link later).
By all means Nigerian who are stuggling should get their act together first before anything. But those who have enough free time to post on nairaland should atleast make plans to go back home and help fix their broken country. Even if I had a $1 million tomorroww, not a single kobo will go towards fixing a broken country, bribing illiterate punks left and right just to do legitimate business in Nigeria ?HELLLLL NOOOOOO.TUFIAAAAAAA. . |

What additional responsibilties do diasporans owe to Nigeria ?LMAO Billions spent every year sending money back home, not even addressing the fact that some of them are languishing and overworking to pay back their smugglers. You gotta be kidding me,how bout your politicians ?Aren't they accountable ? Nigerians DESERVE the government that they get.It doesn't take much to say no to corruption, dishonesty and ignorance.Cry me a river all day but the onus is on,the soldiers at hand to get the job done not call oversees for some mercenaries!!! |

Why we barred females from wearing trousers in offices – Plateau govt On July 27, 2011 · In News
BY TAYE OBATERU Jos—The Plateau State Government has said the barring of females from wearing trousers at the state secretariat and other government offices was part of the campaign against indecent dressing. Head of Service in the state, Mr. Moses Gwom who gave the clarification in an interview with newsmen said it was also in line with the 10-point agenda of Governor Jonah Jang’s administration of which ethical re-orientation was one. He said indecent dressing by females should not be condoned in offices where government business were conducted hence those considered not to be properly dressed were turned back from the secretariat. The policy which started over a year ago has seen many women sent back from the gate of the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat and other government offices for wearing trousers or other dresses considered indecent. A woman who was once turned back from the secretariat described the experience as “embarrassing” arguing that she did not consider wearing of trousers as indecent. She told Vanguard that rather than a blanket ban on the wearing of trousers by women, what was considered indecent should be well defined so as not to embarrass people unnecessarily. She said: ”On the day in question, I was wearing a trouser suit which is an acceptable mode of formal dressing anywhere in the world, but I was turned back and could not transact the business for which I went there”. What a backward and primitive bunch of rascals in Plateau state, Government does not have the right to regulate "MORALITY",Have you numbskulls ever heard about "SEPERATION of CHURCH/MOSQUE and STATE" Nigeria IS not a Theocracy, and by the way trousers actually are more decent than women wearing some low cut skirts or short pants, Plateau has been overrun by HEZBOLLAH and BOKO HARAM for all we know, and the voters there have to get rid of these Ancient apes next time election comes by. |

Iyke-D: Una don come again. . . beauty will always be in the eyes of the beholder, so here are a few things that I see. . .
1. US - Clean toilets just about everywhere you go. Only God know what they call toilets in Nigeria 2. US - High life expectancy in the US (this is where good roads, access to healthcare, power, "CLEAN WATER", etc. comes in) 3. US - The power of the blue passport. Can't compare to anything else 4. US - Respect for human dignity (at least for its citizens). Not perfect, but its in the country's DNA. 5. US - Tough and requires hardwork to survive. 6. US - Slow and steady, very little or no loopholes for quick money 7. Nigeria - By and large, those doing well are really doing well due to the emerging market. 8. Nigeria - Cash heavy society due to numerous loopholes in both private and public sectors for fraud 9. Nigeria - Culture and tradition heavy, though that is also part of the reason why there is lack of accountability 10. Nigeria - Negative perception of nationals all over the world. 419 seems to be in the DNA. 11. Nigeria - Very unstable and unpredictable. 12. Nigeria - Definitely more family oriented
Disclaimer:
I have lived in the US for almost 20 years now and I do visit Nigeria regularly - I was just there a few months ago. I don't know what the future holds, but if I have a choice, there is just no way I can live in Nigeria again. Yes, I have been to friend's houses that are worth N60 million or more in Lekki, etc. Truth be told, those houses are in no way better than a $100,000 house in most part of the US. Yes, we drove through Banana Island few months back and its lovely, but I have seen better houses and landscaping over here in neighborhood where the most expensive house don't even cost more than a $1million.
That said, Nigeria can be a fun place - I guess it has to be if you consider the fact that you have to go to through major hassle to get the most basic of things done like taking a flight, going from point A to point B, etc. I can only imagine what its like to go for a medical emergency - God forbid!
Its pointless comparing Nigeria to the US. For all its shortcomings and it has many, the US is still the greatest country on earth and still has a long way to go. When millions of people are looking to migrate to a particular place on earth, there has to be something special about that place. For every Nigerian that is struggling in America, there are 2 or more that are doing very well. Of course the US is not a bed of roses, but neither is Nigeria for many Nigerians.
Whats the point of this diary again? I agree completely the only one thing about naija which is a good and bad thing, depending on how you look at it are the lack of certain laws and restrictions, you can pretty much do what you like if you have money and pull in most areas but at what cost though ? that IS the big question .Anyone who has a medical condition would be better served living in the US,you sure cant depend on getting to the hospital within minutes in Nigeria, heck in some towns the dont even have ambulances,oh and getting lost in the woods or forest in naija , lmao, babalawo helicopter will come and rescue you Hilarious |
Politics › Re: 5 Reasons Why America Is Worse Than Nigeria by kabukabu(m): 7:00pm On Jul 23, 2011 |
Theblessed: Hey, Mr Norrisman there's no need to be insultive and we all know how to do so, but restrain ourselves from it. You too, can exercise some restraint here.
The writer had not insulted anybody here. To you and others in your shoe, all he did wrong was to ask your opinions and you should not have given it if you felt, his asking was too irritating, than embarking on your trailer load of abuses.
The writer has a point - some I agree with him and some I don't but that does not mean that he is what your claim he is.
You see, I am not here to address that rather, an issue I'm passionate about - SLAVERY AND OPPRESSIVE PRACTICES.
And I ask, you who claim to have the spark of Solomon's wisdom, the writer hadn't - why is it you'd been unable to see the evil your own parents are perpetrating on the poor who are serving them? Is it because, they have the power - the money therefore, they can enslave
You, yourself knows that they are enslaving them, don't you? You even talked about people working long hours and knows it's wrong that your parents servants are subjected to this kind of slavery yet, you support this wicked and evil act of your parents. By their fruit, we should know them, don't we
Look, I don't even blame your parents rather, you who claim to be smart but unwise.
Imagine, someone working from 06.00hrs to 23.00hrs for just under #13,000 (13,000 Naira or whatever!) and you are here, proudly telling us about your fathers ego, to be driven somewhere he could not drive himself and your mother's entrepreneurship at the expense of the needy, shame unto you!
You can drive your own father, can't you? Obviously, you can't even get out of bed at that crock of dawn - 06.00hrs to drive him where ever he directs you, and then come home at 11pm and be happy, would you? To that I say, may be this Scripture holds both you and your parents guilty unless you all repent and treat people well.
"Do unto others the way you'd like them, do unto you." Would you or parents like to be treated that way, just because, somebody has 'power' over you Your parents could easily give them the money without even asking for their service - think about that!
It's all about doing good and doing the right thing. And I don't think they are doing good or even the right thing enslaving their servants with these oppressive terms/conditions of Service that, they imposed on them.
The poor servants work and live in bondage at the mercy of your parents who are taking advantage of their weakness, needy state and poverty stricken life.
But, can't you help them? Of course you can, at least by highlighting this evil to your parents, maybe, they'd change their ways. However, you chose not to do something rather, came here and sub-consciously promoting your parents financial powers, in their oppression of the poor and needy.
But, here's the promise the Lord made to the needy perhaps, your would now, do something.
"For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help them. He will take pity on the weak and needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight" Psalm Chpt.72 v.12 - 14
Obviously, you can see what your parents are doing is wrong and according to the above Scripture, they are guilty. So help get them out of this behaviour, if you love them for there is nothing fun in abusing another human being simply because, you can.
Remember this, the Lord, gave us the skill to make money and he can equally take it away, at will. ^^^^^^ whoever let this tool in here ? |

It might be the same english, but the terms are very different.
There was a film that I wathced about a Nigerian who went to America for the first time. The guy thought that everyone in America was on drugs because they asked for "soda" which has an alternate meaning in Nigeria. Spelling is a thing to take into consideration too. And yes of course as Bugzee stated. All this talk about culture difference,is not that big of a deal, most small towns in the US are no different from small towns in Nigeria especially in the Southern states. Most are close knit communities where alcohol, and other vices are frowned upon.Nigerians tend to get caught up in the hype of what they watch on TV about the Us,most Americans are quite frankly about as ,or even more conservative culturally than Nigerians.Nothing experienced in the US is that different from what you would experience culturally if you grew up in urban Lagos,Port Harcourt,Benin or Calabar. |

odumchi: ^^^ No one is comparing the US governemnt or economy to that of Nigeria. We are simply discussuing how well the US accomodates new Nigerian immigrants and what the pros and cons of living in the US are. Nigerian immigrants to the US have a leg up on most other Asian /Latino or European immigrants because we speak ENGLISH.Unless you come from some remote town in Nigeria, adapting to life in the US is not that hard. But again it depends on personality type,a lazy, good for nothing groaner is probably going to get wake up to having their dreams of lofty living crashed. |

Too often, posters on here will present the skewed view of the 2 percent of Nigerians who ARE living comfortably in Nigeria as an example of just how easy it is,which we all know is very far from the truth, yes, they are not paying taxes, but guess what, they are paying for basic water, diesel generators, expensive private schools and paying to come to the US for healthcare. |

Only on nairaland would you find such an asinine comparison between a first World country and a Third World country and have so much slobbering going on .Oh and Im going to give a wild guess that Buguzee is on here, every 2 or 3 weeks,in some form or another this topic rises again from the ashes of "nairaland post wasteland". No matter how many times we have this argument/debate,you folks won't simply put it to rest, you can't compare the US and Nigeria, without having lived in both places, now some of you posters who have had a terrible time abroad will of course be biased in their posts/opinions.but certain facts are there that can't be ignored. The US system works because it generates revenue efficiently, same as most westernised nations including Japan.US residents pay much less for services compared to ALL western nations,US also has floods of illegal immigrants surging across the Southern border by the thousands every week,a huge population of dependents who receive checks from the govt for retirement, welfare ,susidized food, healthcare and child care. Nigeria would not last 3 DAYS if she had to bear the financial responsibilty that the US does .Nigerian govt does not pay Social security, does not subsize a single dime of anyone's expenses in Nigeria. And yet,the countrys infrastructure is in ruins from lack of simple basic amenities to a non existent emergency response management plan. |

Dating a guy who isn't on her level financially, emotionally and mentally will only end up in breakup, abuse and divorce, most men like that are inferior and will end up mis treating her to make up for their low self esteem |
