Nairaland / General / SHOCKING: Woman Allegedly Turned Into Bird Landed Inside Gutter In Lagos (PICS) by kachysblog(f): 5:45pm On Jul 15, 2016
According to a Facebook user, the woman pictured below was earlier on today, around 9:00am allegedly confessed to being a witch. She was rescued from a gutter where she was trapped in around Abalti Barracks, Ojuelegba in Surulere, Lagos.

According to reports, a passerby had noticed someone stretching out her hand from a very small hole in a 6ft deep gutter just in front of the Army Barracks and calling out for help. The passerby quickly ran into the Army barracks to get help.

Within minutes, a crowd gathered with people saying all sort of things about the lady inside the gutter and how she got trapped in it. Some said she’s a witch, that she went for her meeting transformed as a
bird. Only to end up in the covered gutter after she fell uncontrollably as a bird from the sky. That it was inside the drainage she now transformed back into her human form. Some others said she was on her way from Oshogbo and got sucked in the gutter, and so on.

Weeping ”Please I need water, help me”.

A senior officer of the Nigerian Army reportedly asked the soldiers to get her out, a welder around the environment was called in and she was finally brought out by a good Samaritan who entered the gutter to help her out.
She was brought out naked, covered up and then she said:

My name is Amudat Jimoh, It was God that sent me here, He (GOD) said I should confess my sins so that I don’t die, please I need water to drink, help me, I don’t know how I found myself here, please help me..

A Lagos State ambulance arrived and she was taken to away for proper medical attention…

Laments from the deceased friend
Just that he has a little misunderstanding with his girl friend and she planned and gathered all their Togolese brothers and accused him of stealing and stoned him to death without any reason, and started Re-grating crying, saying she never plan he will die. Since then till now I am still afraid is this how this World is? Just Like That Otto is No More.

Politics / The Bad State Of Major Roads In Akwa Ibom And Abia State by kachysblog(f): 5:00am On Jul 06, 2016
What can one make out of this? That two rich oil-producing states cannot boast of good major roads. Is it that the barber does not know how to trim hair or that the razor blade is not sharp? Obviously, people's businesses must have been affected so badly by the horrible state of these roads and to think that they are link routes to rural areas. See pics below....

Politics / Kwara Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Non-payment Of Salaries - Vanguard by kachysblog(f): 5:12am On Jan 05, 2016
By Demola Akinyemi

ILORIN—Teachers in public primary and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in Kwara state yesterday carried out their threat to go on strike despite pleas from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The teachers, who had threatened to commence indefinite strike action yesterday over unpaid three months salaries, deserted classes in public schools in the state.

When Vanguard visited some junior secondary schools along Offa road, Zango road and Saw mail areas in Ilorin yesterday, pupils who resumed from Christmas/New Year holiday were seen playing around the compound without any teacher to attend to them.

However, teaching and learning activities were going on in Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) because it was gathered that the state government did not owe SSS teachers.

CC: Lalasticlala

Speaking with journalists, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Alhaji Abubakar Musa, said the strike became imperative following non payment of October, November and December 2015 salary of the affected teachers.

Alhaji Musa noted that teachers need to be motivated to carry out their duties as motivation is one of the indices of teaching which the teachers presently lack , “there is no way the hungry teachers could deliver effectively, it is better for teachers to stay at home until the Government is capable of paying them.” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kwara state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has appealed to the striking teachers to suspend the strike.

In a release by its Publicity secretary, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, the party said, “as a party, we wish to state that we feel the concerns and share in the pains of primary school teachers in Kwara State. Quite unfortunate, this issue is chiefly caused by the dwindling allocation from the federation account.

“Therefore, it is not about non-payment of teachers’ salaries but non-availability of funds to pay salaries. It requires collective efforts to address rather than strike action, if the resources are available today, the Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed-led Kwara State Government will pay all teachers like it has always done in the past five years.”

Politics / Buhari:“my People Are Useless,my People Are Senseless,my People Are Indiscipline by kachysblog(f): 6:38am On Oct 11, 2015
By Obi Nwakanma

A wise man once told me: “Nigerians are mules, everyone who can, kicks at them.” The thing is, the more things change, the more they feel the same. In 1984, Major-General Muhamadu Buhari as military tyrant diagnosed “indiscipline” as Nigeria’s national malaise.

The sexy power word in those days was “summarily.” Buhari promised that the military government of which he was head would “summarily” deal with any Nigerian who was found wanting in “discipline.” He quickly launched a “War Against Indiscipline.” It caught on fire.

Nigerians were pressed to “behave.” They began to queue for buses and other services in places like Lagos, notorious for jumping queues. That was the greatest achievement of WAI: Nigerians learnt to queue. Military governors sometimes arrived the gates of government secretariats very early, and waited for government workers who arrived late.

Late-coming civil servants were humiliated, made to kneel down irrespective of their office or positions, or age, and frog-jumped as punishment for coming late to work. In some cases, they were “summarily dismissed.” Buhari’s government authorized armed soldiers to raid warehouses, and seize the goods of traders accused of “hoarding essential commodities.” That was in a period, of course, when “ESSENCO”was very scarce. Buhari’s War Against Indiscipline, stemmed from his genuine convictions that Nigerians were an undisciplined lot, and had to be forced to obey the simple laws of the land, and of courtesy.

Recent evidence suggests that Buhari continues to believe this as a fundamental problem with the Nigerian character. Last week, our friends, Dr. Barry and Claire Mauer had us all over for a party for Claire’s birthday at their College Park, Orlando, home. We were all going at it, with a little wine and sherry, and that good stuff, when Shanti, another friend of ours said, “I hear your president say all you Nigerians are unruly, and you need to stop being unruly!” I too had heard that the previous day on the BBC.

It was big news for the BBC that president Buhari’s Independence Day message to Nigerians was that Nigerians were “unruly.” It triggered their fancy so much that they made such an event of it. They brought a Nigerian, whose name I do not now recall, and Ghana’s Elizabeth Ohene, to talk about the “unruliness” of Nigerians as claimed by a president who increasingly seems really disconnected from the Nigerian reality. In the symbolic moment of Nigeria’s 55th anniversary as an Independent nation, more sober considerations should have been made regarding the trajectory of Nigeria’s journey, the transitions that have been made, and the true reasons for the failures of Nigeria.

We should rather celebrate the hardiness and resilience of Nigerians in the face of a terribly confused administration as Buhari’s is turning out to be.Ordinary Nigerians must not be made to carry the can for failed political leadership this past fifty-five years, of which Buhari has been a distinct part. The President had not much to say to Nigerians except that Nigerians are unruly and discourteous, and must change, in order to achieve development. Actually, this is the worst Independence Day speech I have heard of any Nigerian president. It had no concrete facts. It simply was high on the weed of self-indulgence. On such a symbolic day, President Buhari should have celebrated Nigeria, and offered it hope.

There are ordinary Nigerians laboring heroically to turn the disadvantages of being Nigerian into something hopeful, and meaningful. Nigerians are not unruly. The Nigerian child I know is taught, right from the home, to be courteous, and respectful of people, especially, older people. Nigerians know to “throway salute” when they meet you. They say, “Afternoon, sir!” “Enlee ma!” “I boola chi e!” and so on. Nigerians are not, by their very nature, or even by acculturation, unruly or discourteous.

Our political leaders have been unruly and discourteous. Those are the real culprits and makers of our national malaise. They have very little regard or respect for the civil and economic rights of Nigerians. Anyone who suddenly arrives at political office, begins immediately to see the rest Nigerians as adversaries and enemies; people who must be contained and repressed, and garrisoned.

Nigerians are constantly infantilized in the minds of the men and women who arrive at power. That is the true meaning of unruliness: to ride rough-shod on your county men because you have the privilege of the protections of public office.

It is unruly of public office holders to capture the road on a hot, uncomfortable, tropical day, with sirens and a long convoy, and horse-whip people to the sideways, and travel freely while the rest must deal with congested traffic. It is unruly to shield political power holders behind the barricade of high walls inside government buildings, while the rest of Nigerians are left to the vagaries of crime. I think President Buhari must first, look inward.

As president, propriety demands that he be accompanied by no more than his police orderly in public, while the secret service organize his security with unseen and invisible agents, who mingle with the crowd, without harassing Nigerians with an overwhelming image of armed power. It is the image of overwhelming force, especially modeled by the military that has created the psychological crisis that has reduced Nigerians to its current social miasma. Nigerians, subjected to force rather than governance, since 1966, are suffering from the trauma of social violence, and are reproducing that violence. They know nothing else but the unruliness modeled by the makers of the public system: the government, and political leadership. It will not do merely to preach order, curtsey in society, when the conditions in which Nigerians live make it possible.

If there was a well-organized public transport system, Nigerians would have no need to “rush.” But in a city like Lagos, with a population over fifteen million, to have only one means of moving that population is madness in itself. It is nightmarish, and the social pressure of moving about in Lagos which ought to, like cities even half its size, have an underground system, a surface metro system, a water transport system, as well as well-kept roads that do not clog up movement, makes courtesy difficult, and unruliness only a means of survival.

A man who has no access to clean public toilets, must defecate, and if he cannot find any will be forced to the indignity of relieving himself in public. To prevent that, it is incumbent on governments to provide clean public toilets in strategic places, to prevent such unruliness. The government itself must model the meaning of courtesy, by treating the public with the highest respect in public.

A government officer, like a policeman or soldier or tax collector, who harasses any member of the public is modeling unruliness; a government who keeps armed soldiers and police on the highways and streets where they harass Nigerians, is an unruly administration, and will reproduce an unruly nation.

A government that offers, not work, but whips to Nigerians, will create the kind of social pressure that will make civilized conduct impossible. So, President Buhari should for a moment, get off the back of Nigerians. Nigerians did not elect him merely to preach, they elected him to act. So, to make Nigerians more courteous, the government should begin a work program, strengthen internal regulations and enforcement codes in the public service, provide public infrastructure, enough to make an aggressive search for it redundant. That will reduce the kind of social pressures that make Nigerians unruly.

Health / World Egg Day: An Egg A Day Keeps Malnutrition At Bay - Vanguard News by kachysblog(f): 8:00am On Oct 09, 2015
By Gabriel Olawale & Jeffrey Ogunyinde

Everybody should eat eggs, children in particular because eggs are not just good to eat but very nutritious. So good are eggs for nutrient health that the World Health Organisation, WHO, recommends that every healthy individual should eat one egg daily for optimal health.

Latest data released by UNICEF shows that about 1.7 million Nigerian children under the age of five, are severely and acutely malnourished, accounting for 10 percent of the global total of malnourished children.

With prices of foods skyrocketing, more hard times await Nigerian children as statistics have shown that two out of every five Nigerian children are chronically malnourished. According to 2011 World Global Hunger Index, Nigeria contributes 58 per cent of the global hunger problem, and may worsen if urgent measures are not taken to reverse the trend.

However, the Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN, says it has a simple and inexpensive solution to the problem – eggs

Disclosing this during an activity to commemorate this year’s World Egg Day with the theme: “Benefits of an egg a day for the Nigerian child,” President of the Association, Dr. Ayoola Oduntan, said immediate measures needed to be taken to prevent further negative impact on the nutritional health of the vulnerable population (pregnant women and children).

Oduntan said World Egg Day is globally marked every 2nd Friday in October to highlight simple steps that can help to address some of these challenges. He identified the egg as God’s natural pill that can conquer hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, and noted that it contains best proteins, vitamins and minerals.

“It contains natural vitamin D, useful for calcium and phosphorus absorption for strong bones and teeth. 1

“Eggs are the best follow up to breast milk in children as they contain the richest mix of essential amino acids. An egg contains the perfect combination of protein, 12 vitamins and 12 minerals. Eggs help to regulate the brain, nervous and cardiovascular system since one egg yolk has about 300 micrograms of choline, helping both memory and mental capacity.”

Also speaking, Director General of the Association, Onallo Akpa, said having eggs for breakfast, assists dieters to lose weight because of the feeling of fullness or satiety reflex an egg meal stimulates.

“Studies have proved that eggs may prevent breast cancer, as women who consume at least six eggs per week reduce their risk of breast cancer by 44 percent. Eggs prevent ageing of the skin and help in increasing the Red Blood Cell count in infants as well as in their brain development. “Eggs are best brain and body food for pregnant women, their unborn children and lactating mothers. Egg improves a child’s concentration level, attention span and scholarly performance for ‘eggcellent’ grades.”

Akpa recalled that in March, 2002, the American Heart Association guidelines were changed to allow one egg per day into the average healthy American diet thereby ending the Association’s 30 years old campaign that limited egg consumption to three eggs per week.”

“In the same light, the Harvard School of Public Health published that moderate egg consumption which is defined as one egg per day is not associated with increased risk of heart disease and does not have a negative impact on cholesterol neither does it affect a person’s lipid profile.”

Eggs do not contain saturated fat, but contain dietary cholesterol that does not harm the body.

Politics / We‘re Committed To Making Nigeria Work—saraki by kachysblog(f): 7:04am On Oct 09, 2015
By Levinus Nwabughiogu

ABUJA—President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said yesterday that the legislature was committed to making Nigerian democracy work for the people.

He said the National Assembly had a shared affinity with the executive arm of government to realize the objective.

Saraki, who led the leadership of both chambers of National Assembly, Senate and House of Representatives, to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, spoke to newsmen yesterday night after a private meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He stated that the meeting was at the instance of the President to interact on ways to meet the expectations of the present government.

He said: “The meeting was an initiative of the President for an interaction with the leadership of the National Assembly. It was a very useful session, being the first one. This kind of interaction helps in ensuring a smooth relationship between the two arms of government.

‘What we discussed’

“We discussed a number of issues. The general commitment is that yes, the National Assembly has legislators from different parties but now we are representing Nigeria. We have a common goal to see that we work together for the interest of the country as a whole.”

On whether his ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, featured at the meeting, Saraki said Nigeria was the topic of the meeting.

According to him, “we are talking about what will make Nigeria work. We are talking about the promises we made during elections. Those are the big issues we are talking about and to ensure that there are no distractions.

“The focus is to ensure that the executive arm does things in the interest of the county. It is normal in democratic setting: from time to time, you see the parliament talking with the executive. That is how to make things work.

“What we are taking away is for Nigerians to be confident that government is working. It is a good development. We are all committed to what we are all elected to do: to make Nigeria work.”

Roll call

Some lawmakers, who made it to the meeting, which took place at the First Lady Conference room, were Senate Leader, Ali Ndume; Deputy Majority Leader, Bala Ibn N’Allah; Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Senate Minority Whip, Phillip Aduda.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, led other members of the House, including his deputy, Yusuf Lasun, and House Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Asked why Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekwerenmadu, was absent at the meeting, Saraki said: “Two people are not here because they are attending a conference. The Deputy Minority Whip in the House too is not here. It just happened that they are not in the country.”

Vanguard was informed that the deceased was in his early 30s and the cause of the minor squabble could not be ascertained at the time of going to press.

It was gathered that the deceased, who was attached to the state security outfit, code named “Fast Strike Squad“ entered into a shouting match with the wife on the ill-fated day.

Shouting match

The shouting match reportedly degenerated into the use of foul language and subsequently a physical fight.

Eyewitness account said the suspect rushed into the kitchen in the height of the argument only to return with a knife with which she stabbed her husband in the neck.

Report had it that immediately the havoc was committed, the wife came back to her senses and rushed out of the house to inform their neighbours of what she had done to her husband.

By the time the neighbours would come to his rescue, the deceased had reportedly lost so much blood and was gasping for breath.

It was learned that all efforts to save the life of the Inspector were not successful as he reportedly gave up the ghost after he was rushed to a nearby private hospital.

Vanguard gathered that detectives were invited and the suspect was arrested and detained at the Ijapo Police Station where she was interrogated and detained.

He assured that Police detectives would soon unravel the cause of the squabble and bring the culprit to book

The Police spokesman said that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the state Specialist Hospital in Akure.

Meanwhile, a police corporal in Ogun State, whose identity was not disclosed by the state Police command, on Tuesday, shot dead a commercial driver, identified as Likinyo Olumide, at Sagamu toll gate along Lagos-Benin expressway.

An eyewitness, Folake Egbeuwalo, who was one of the seven passengers in the vehicle driven by the late driver, explained that the driver was shot dead after he was stopped by some policemen.

Vanguard gathered that the driver, 42, is survived by six children and a pregnant wife.

Egbeuwalo, who spoke with newsmen at Police Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Wednesday, said the incident occurred at 9:45 pm on Tuesday as they were coming from Lagos where they went to buy some goods, retuning to Okitipupa in Ondo State.

The late driver

The witness said: ‘’The late driver was our permanent driver who used to carry us from Okitipupa to Lagos. The man carried us from Idumagbo, Lagos Island. As we were coming, we met many policemen and soldiers on the road, we stopped and settled them.

“ When we reached Sagamu toll gate, we did not know that there were policemen on the road, they asked the driver to park and immediately he parked. The driver came out of the car and as he came down, he stood beside the vehicle and the police moved to the other side of the road and gunned him down immediately.’’

Egbeuwalo further said the policemen ran away immediately the man died and later came back and took away the corpse in one of the Hilux vans, marked NPF104 OD.

She, however, lamented that all the passengers were abandoned and were made to sleep on the highway as none of them could drive the car after the death of the driver.

The late driver’s younger bother, Likinyo Solomon, lamented the death of his elder brother, who he said was survived by six children and a pregnant wife.

He said: “I demand to see the person that killed my brother and to know what actually happened before he was killed.’’

Asked to comment on the incident, the Assistant Inspector General of Police zone 2 , Balade Hassan, who was on a visit to Ogun State on Wednesday, said the policeman would face the wrath of the law.

AIG speaks

The AIG said: “The regulation is clear and the Constitution is clear about the right to life of all Nigerians, so, if anybody takes the life of anybody, be it a policeman or civilian, not as provided by the Constitution, you will get the full wrath of the law.

“You know the present Inspector General of Police and previous IGs do not take things lightly when things like that go wrong.

“You would recall that something like this happened in Lagos, the policeman was arrested, tried, dismissed from the force and arraigned in less than 24 hours after the incident.

“The police is trying to say anyone who flouts the rules and regulation will get his case in court as the case may be. This case is not an exception from other cases, the person would be tried as prescribed by the law,. After he is found guilty, he would be dismissed and charged to court.

“We wish something like this does not happen again. In the last six to seven months, there has been a lot of improvement and that is why the IG banned roadblocks in order to reduce the interaction with the members of the community where this kind of problem would happen.”

“The safer highways was initiated to allow Nigerians move around the country without any hitch. Before you block the road, you must get permission from the IG in the case of a stolen car.

“The order is clear and the IG is making sure that this does not happen again and when it happens, actions are taken against the men.’’

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command was aware and had arrested the perpetrator.

According to him,the DPO informed the CP that a corporal attached to one of its teams at Sagamu toll gate fired at the driver of a commercial vehicle, the driver sustained injuries before giving up the ghost.

“We have arrested the corporal and he would face the full wrath of the law, we are going to treat the matter departmentally before it would be charged to court for proper prosecution.

“The command is not happy with the situation because we have not recorded that for a very long time,. We assure the public and relatives of the deceased that justice would be done. The command sympathies with the family of the deceased.

“We’ll have a meeting with them to know what the command can do to ensure a good relationship with the family and to be with them in this trying time. We want to assure them of adequate justice. The remains have been deposited in a public morgue,” he said.

“The things lightly when things like that go wrong.

“You would recall that something like this happened in Lagos, the policeman was arrested, tried, dismissed from the force and arraigned in less than 24 hours after the incident.

Police warn

“The police is trying to say anyone who flouts the rules and regulation will get his case in court as the case may be. This case is not an exception from other cases, the person would be tried as prescribed by the law,. After he is found guilty, he would be dismissed and charged to court.

“We wish something like this does not happen again at all. In the last six to seven months, there has been a lot of improvement and that is why the IG banned roadblocks in order to reduce the interaction with the members of the community where this kind of problem would happen.”

Politics / Buhari Romancing With Politicians Who Destroyed Nigeria For 16yrs- Shekarau by kachysblog(f): 7:15am On Oct 07, 2015
…vows to remain in PDP (Vanguard)

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA—IMMEDIATE past Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, said yesterday, that President Muhammadu Buhari was romancing with politicians who destroyed Nigeria for 16 years.

Shekarau, who spoke in an interview with newsmen in Abuja, wondered why the President was now romancing former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who, according to him, ruled the country for eight of Peoples Democratic Party’s 16 years of administering Nigeria.

Reacting to President Buhari’s claim that he came to right the wrongs of 16 years mess created by the PDP, the former governor, who is also a member of the PDP review committee, described all the political parties as necessary evil.

He said: “Buhari has said that he has come to right the wrongs of 16-year mess by the PDP. So, I said, ‘Mr. President you are welcome, but reminded that 10 of those 16 years belong to ex-President Obasanjo.

‘’He had his eight years and by indirect remote control, two years of late President Umaru Yar’Adua was Obasanjo’s. And Obasanjo was the one who produced Yar’Adua and Jonathan. Until three years ago when they fell out (Obasanjo and Jonathan), Obasanjo was in charge.

“Obasanjo today belongs to those who are chief advisers to President Muhammadu Buhari. Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, was one of the major hit men of Obasanjo, my former governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, was one of the boys of Obasanjo as well as former Governors Bukola Saraki, Goje and all the rest of them.

“They were part of those 16 years which President Buhari was saying that PDP messed up Nigeria, and today because they are APC, they are saints. They are now surrounding the President as his chief advisers. The Amaechis are all part of the PDP.

“All the election crisis that President Buhari was accusing PDP of perpetrating were a creation of these people, the same who are with him now.

“So what sense does it make that I said you are thief for 16 years, I have come to correct the wrongs that you did and now I am calling you the chief adviser in order to right the wrongs that you committed.

“Does it make sense? We are waiting to see how they will come out of this.”

Politics / Buhari 'll Be Distracted, Overworked As Petroleum Minister - NACCIMA by kachysblog(f): 7:07am On Oct 01, 2015
By Michael Eboh (Vanguard)

Abuja—The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NACCIMA, yesterday, faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision not to appoint a Minister of Petroleum, saying the President would be distracted and overload himself with excess workload.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard in Abuja, Mr. Billy Harry, National Vice President, NACCIMA, stated that the President already had too much work to do to saddle himself with a ministerial appointment.

He said if Buhari really wants to bring the change dividend that Nigeria voted for, he should focus on administering all the ministries from a vantage point as President, not as a minister and a President.

He said: “It will distract him and not give him the required space and work time to be able to administer facets of the economy and policies.

“We have so many more issues other oil. Agriculture alone can swallow everything that oil is doing.”

Agriculture alone can give us over 500 per cent of income stream of what oil is doing. So, does it mean that if he wants to curb corruption in that sector, he has to also be minister of agriculture?

“The President has to be very focused on job of supervising the entire economy as a polity. I don’t think I will advise him to saddle himself with additional responsibility.”

Also speaking, Mr. Peter Esele, former President of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, stated that President Buhari would be saddled with a huge volume of work which might likely hinder him from concentrating on some sectors of the economy.

Esele, who is also a former President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, said, “Theoretically, he can get away with it to a level, but what I am also looking at is the volume of work, because I think that the president has so much clean up to do, not only in the NNPC; with institutionalizing transparency and best practice, not only in the oil and gas sector, but in the entire economy, so that we can move on.”

However, he said the President should be given the benefit of the doubt, stating that, “But no matter what happened, we should give the President the benefit of the doubt. If it works, we all clap for him, and if he fails, he will be criticized.

“I think the bottom line is that he is the president and he is going to appoint minister of state for petroleum, from what I gathered. And between the minister of state and the GMD of the NNPC, they will report to him.

“What we have during the time of Obasanjo, there was no minister of state. He was the minister of petroleum ,and he only had a special adviser on petroleum, which is not the same office as a minister.”

Politics / Buhari’s Cabinet: Cleanest Dirty Shirts In The Laundry? (1) PUNCH by kachysblog(f): 6:36am On Oct 01, 2015
In a bid to ensure that Nigeria is in safe and secure hands for socio-economic and political regeneration promised during his campaign, President Muhammadu Buhari has spent the better part of four months into his new administration scurrying around the country for Nigerians, incorruptible and professionally competent, to serve in his cabinet.

For a country located at the bottom rung of the Transparency International, global corruption perception rating index, finding 36 good (wo)men to fit the lofty expectations of the President in consonance with his high integrity persona is akin to identifying the cleanest dirty shirts in the laundry.

Although the task is as arduous as seeking for a needle in a hay stack, it would appear that Buhari may be on target to accomplishing his mission as he prepares to roll out the list of the change agents that l would like to refer to as his economic “husband men” anytime from now.

Already, security agencies have put the potential candidates in the crucible and quite a number of names floating around in the main stream and social media seem to have passed the litmus test.

In a country where people are judged based on ethnic bias and religious inclination rather than from the prism of their character and content, the President, the All Progressives Congress and indeed Nigerians should brace themselves for the flurry of criticisms that would trail the official release of the names of the “few good men” to the National Assembly for scrutiny and approval as ministers.

One way of vitiating the associated agony and stress is for Buhari to take solace in the wise counsel of the philosopher, John Adams, that, “Politics, as a practice, whatever its professions, has always been the systematic organisations of haters”.

The quote above underscores the fact that political hate is not peculiar to Nigeria.

While the aphorism that one can never be prepared enough holds true in almost all instances, a counter strategy against the aforementioned onslaught of ethnic jingoists and religious bigots that would seize the media space to literarily slay the President as soon as the list is released, may not be a media management masterstroke. But suffice it to say that the initiative would evince similar benefits realisable when measures are put in place to mitigate an anticipatory response to an uncommon policy.

By that l mean that President Buhari’s spokesmen and the APC’s reputation managers should proactively hedge against any backlash by preparing upfront, information underpinning the principles behind the choice of the candidates and the values they are bringing to the table.

As image and crisis managers would agree, the efficacy of pre-emptive actions is undeniable and one way of justifying the appointments is by engaging their principal, rigorously in dialogues that would elicit reasons for his choice of the candidates for the cabinet positions-professionally, ethnically and religiously. In a highly polarised country where divisive factors such as the tongue, tribe and worship pattern of candidates were freely used as commodity, currency and fuel during campaigns for the general election, appointments into public offices have assumed an equally combustible dimension, so one can never be too careful.

For instance, two of the recent appointments made by President Buhari that generated the most public opprobrium are the military service chiefs and his choice of the Secretary of Government of the Federation and the Chief of Staff. While the appointment of his Chief of Staff and the SGF were later explained, he chose people he can trust having worked with the appointees over the years which was deemed treasonable, his explanation that professionalism was purely the criterion applied in choosing the top brass of the three arms of the armed forces- Army, Navy and Air force- has been received with scepticism. Dissenters believe that it is unlikely that in the entire armed forces of Nigeria, no South-East or South-South candidates were qualified enough to fit the bill.

Against the foregoing background, it would be deft if detailed professional competence and political balancing factors that came into play in selecting the proposed cabinet members are availed members of the public to enable them judge for themselves, the rigour invested in the exercise by Mr. President and how altruistic his intentions are.

The idea that the National Assembly should also be furnished with the proposed portfolio of the list of nominees being sent for clearance( recently canvassed in an editorial by a newspaper) should also be given due consideration as such facts could serve as public enlightenment that could take the wind off the sail of critics or those who may have some axe to grind.

As we all know, putting a round peg in a round hole can hardly attract sustainable criticism and fundamentally, facts are antidotes to rumour mongering.

Expectedly, there would be the tendency for some hawkish advisers to contend that Mr. President does not owe Nigerians such a detailed explanation, but such people would be misguiding him because the ultimate objective of any good politician is to carry the populace along in his policies and programmes. In my experience from studying politicians over the years from Winston Churchill’s (1940-45 and 1951-55) war time exploits in Great Britain encapsulated in his “Battle of Britain” speech to the parliament before the war against Germany; Franklin Delano Roosevelt, (1933-45) “New Deal” to Americans during the Great Depression and Deng Xiaoping’s (1978-92) introduction of “Four Modernisations” in China after the Cultural Revolution, nothing engages the mind of a great politician and leader more than how to get his voting stakeholders to buy into his programmes and policies.

To achieve that objective, a lot of what is today referred to as Emotional Intelligence had to be invested.

Emotional Intelligence being the ability to recognise one’s own and other people’s emotions is the skill required to better understand, empathise and negotiate with others.

Churchill relied on it in Great Britain, when he made the famous speech to parliament that Brits should prepare for “the battle of Britain” that enabled the country hold out against Germany and thus led them out from the brink of defeat to victory; Roosevelt deployed it in the USA when he re-established hope during the Great Depression through his pursuit of the three Rs policy of Relief, Recovery and Reforms conveyed in the New Deal and Xiaoping adopted it in China when after the calamitous Cultural Revolution, he had to deftly negotiate with the communist party leadership to allow a bit of openness in order to introduce the “Beijing Spring” that allowed criticism of government and enabled him pursue the policy of “ Four Modernisations” which entailed the opening up Chinese economy to foreign investments in the economy, agriculture, scientific and technological development and national defence.

Now, Buhari had mentioned in his Chatham House presentation last February that one event that significantly inspired his change of ideology from autocracy to democratic system of governance is the fall of the Soviet Union. So, l assume that he has abiding interest in the history of how nations leap forward or collapse. That’s why l choose England, the US and China as references in my analogy as models for success .

To be concluded

Politics / El Rufai 'insults' Osinbajo - Déjà Vu (Vanguard) by kachysblog(f): 6:00am On Oct 01, 2015
By Ochereome Nnanna

ALL is not well between Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the man widely referred to as the “unofficial vice president”, Mallam Nasir el Rufai, the governor of Kaduna State. Proof: after a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held on 17th September, 2015, el Rufai showed up in Osinbajo’s office and both took a photograph, all smiles; and splashed them all over the internet. Purpose: to debunk the “rumours” making the rounds that they had exchanged insults. To confirm the story further, a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC) a couple of days ago tabled as an item for discussion/resolution the “face-off” between Osinbajo and el Rufai.

El Rufai has been throwing his weight around since Buhari emerged as President of Nigeria. He is widely reputed to have been behind the double shuffle we saw on the last day of Professor Attahiru Jega as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Remember, Jega at the expiration of his tenure, had handed over to Alhaji Ahmed Wali as the Acting National Chairman. Barely six hours after that a letter from President Buhari ordered Wali to hand over to Hajiya Amina Zakari, a perceived close relation, to act as National Chairman. This was in total contravention of the law; an illegality that subsists till today when Zakari is preparing to conduct the Bayelsa and Kogi State governorship elections. Fingers pointed to el Rufai for carrying out the “coup” which is liable to compromise the independence of the INEC. It could feather Buhari and his APC’s political nest and compromise the integrity of our future elections.
El Rufai is also believed to be the brain behind the appointment of Mallam Abba Kyari as the Chief of Staff to the President. He also reportedly got the founder of the #Bringback Our Girls campaigners (one of the outfits used to hound former President Goodluck Jonathan out of power), Hadiza Bala Usman a seat on Buhari’s Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption. There is hardly any trip Buhari considers important that el Rufai does not abandon his governorship job in Kaduna to accompany him to. And there is virtually no important meeting that Buhari convenes that el Rufai does not attend as a close confidant and adviser. El Rufai is having a time of his life as the younger Northern brain that Buhari draws from to rule Nigeria.

This is not the first time he is enjoying this run of power in Aso Villa. Remember his days with former President Olusegun Obasanjo? He came into the Obasanjo government through the good graces of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who made him the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE). But when the power struggle between Obasanjo and Atiku turned nasty and no-holds-barred, el Rufai nipped over to Obasanjo. His influence rapidly grew, and the pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, once described him as ‘the de facto No. 2 official” in the Obasanjo presidency.
In turn, el Rufai disclosed that Ribadu would be appointed Minister of Power when Obasanjo’s handpicked successor, Governor Umaru Yar’ Adua, won the presidential election in 2007. Incidentally, when Yar’ Adua assumed office, el Rufai fled to Boston/Baltimore in America while Ribadu went into self-exile in the UK. They both returned under our dovish former President Jonathan. But while Ribadu found his place in that regime, el Rufai, after being ignored by Jonathan for “too long”, joined the Arewa army for the return of power to the North by all means as a propagandist. El Rufai became a foot soldier for Buhari when the latter broke his resolve not to run for election again and started the journey with Bola Tinubu toward the birth of the now ruling APC.

If the constitution and the political behaviour of Nigerians had allowed it, Buhari could have preferred to have a Northern Muslim as his vice president, just as he did when he and the late Major General Tunde Idiagbon, a fellow Fulani Muslim, paired for head of state and deputy in 1984. But for political expediency and to brighten his electoral chances, Prof. Osinbajo, a Christian cleric, was ‘foisted” on him. I remember the day Osinbajo was unveiled as Buhari’s VP late in 2014. He said he was “proud” to be Buhari’s running mate.

He must have since discovered that he was merely a “burden of necessity”. On June 5th, 2015, barely a week after he took oath as Vice President, Osinbajo was reportedly barred from attending a national security meeting where the anti-Boko Haram strategy was discussed. He was ignominiously referred to by newly-installed Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki as “a mere commissioner”. And when he went to Aso Villa Chapel to worship, he found it under lock and key! It was only the media uproar which this generated that got it reluctantly opened for him to worship in.

The latest humiliation of Osinbajo came at a recent meeting presided over by Buhari. El Rufai, still being true to himself, reportedly used “rude” words on Osinbajo, who, in annoyance, told him off and walked out of the meeting. We hope the APC will be able to mend the fence between the elected Vice President and the kitchen cabinet “vice president”, one of Buhari’s “long suffering disciples”.

Down memory lane: IBB Boys disrespected Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe as Babangida’s No. 2 in 1986 and the Abiriba-born sea warrior resigned honourably from government. Al Mustapha and Abacha’s Boys humiliated General Sani Abacha’s Deputy, Lt Gen Oladipo Diya in 1998 when he was condemned to death for coup plotting. The Katsina “Yar’ Adua cabal” trampled former Vice President Jonathan underfoot and we had to invoke a “doctrine of necessity” to promote him to President when Yar’ Adua died in 2010. The French say: déjà vu: Nigerians say: nor bi today.

But the only Northern Vice Presidents – Atiku and Namadi Sambo – enjoyed dignified tenures of office without harassment by Southern “underlings”. Why? Answer that.
