yotade:
Mr kalusam, pls what sort of farm planning do we need to put in place, for those of us considering the rain gum. Especially so we know the cost implication.
Beds should be made in such a way that the water flows without disruption, not against or blocking any drainage channel else the area will flood automatically. Also Rain Gun should be placed in right angle to the flow of water(drainage). Thank you!

RayRed16:
@kalusam...pls I'm really interested in the rain gun... I've read up a lil about it. From what I could see here, it appears rain gun causes flooding....

Now my question is, is the flooding associated with run gun bigger than that associated with normal rainfall?

On the other hand, I was thinking one can control the amount of flooding rain gun can cause by not watering a given area of land so deep....
I want to state that for every farm setup, the farmer or farm owner should make sure the land is well drained...now to answer your question, flooding due to Rain Gun Sprinkler happens ONLY when the farm was not well planned. A well planned farmland has a space for run-off of excess water, in any case the soil is not properly drained.

The worst kind of irrigation method is an irregular irrigation(early rains), this irrigation method is becoming highly unreliable due to the effects of climate change.

Don't start your farm project this period without an irrigation plan as backup, pre-order high quality irrigation kits today. Drip tapes+kits, Treadle Pump, Rain Guns, Spray Tubes, e.t.c

How do you prevent flooding and high water impact on Soil? Answer: Place the Rain Gun in perpendicular to the farm beds such that any water is drained immediately. Second, increasing the height of the Rain Gun stand will reduce the impact of the Rain Gun water on the soil.
AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 11:55am On Mar 19, 2016
NOTE: Using Raingun Sprinkler on crops during flowering can wash away the flowers, even though it will also wash away insects!
AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 11:54am On Mar 19, 2016
Second question is when at what stage do you need Rain Gun Irrigation? Answer: immediately before planting, crops require moisture and warmth to sprout, that is why crops can grow in sawdust or other media, even just water! Subsequently when crops start emerging they need watering with rain gun(remember not all crops will need heavy impact of rainfall which the rain gun brings)! Rain gun use on sandy soils or loose soil leads to erosion and run-off, depleting soil nutrient(leaching). Heavily manure your soil if your soil is loose and you are using Rain Gun Sprinkler.
AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 11:53am On Mar 19, 2016
Big question is, should I get Rain Gun for my farm? Answer: Yes, if you have a well drained soil or can effectively manage flooding.

(2) if you have a reservoir nearby or a big water source(Dams, Rivers, e.t.c), but not salty or contaminated water o!

(3) Grow crops that support such Irrigation: Plantation crops(Plantain, Pineapple, Oil Palm, Rubber, e.t.c), Indeginous vegies or water loving vegetables like Lettuce

If there are farmers within the same farm area, i suggest you do a collective borehole(if that is possible). If not, discuss with your land lord/owner on the possibility of a borehole. I don't know how much digging a borehole cost in your location, but if you want to grow vegetables water is a must! But first, I advise you run a rain-fed vegie farm for ONLY vegetables that command high amount even in the rainy season first and when you have made something, get a borehole in the dry season so you can do all year round farming. PLEASE if you know nothing about vegetables, meet a practical farmer in benue and learn from them for at least a month. Then apply what you learnt on the few portion of land you can manage and your amount can cater for.Else that 250k can vanish in less than a month and nothing to show for it, no profit, just losses and heart breaks!
caesaraba:
Okay. The land is in Benue. It's on a lease. The budget for this particular farm is around 250k for start in up.
AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 7:35pm On Mar 18, 2016
Before I advise I will like to know the following: Where is the land located, which state? Is the land yours or you lease? What is your farm budget and what percentage did you earmark for irrigation? If you are not comfortable with sharing your budget online, you can whatsapp me that(if you are on whatsapp).
caesaraba:
Okay thanks, I want to know how the water requirements are. For a particular farm site, I'm thinking of planting vegetables, pepper etc (gardening stuff). I want it irrigated, however, the problem is that there is no water body near-by or any pipe-borne water(water board pipes). Someone (who's not vast in agric) suggested that I install a water tank(4000 litres) and have water delivered by water tanker. I think that the running cost may be too high in the long-run with that option as I'm not really sure how frequently the water will be used up. Land size is about 3 acres or more but I could use less if need be. Please I need your candid advice. Thanks.
AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 7:30pm On Mar 18, 2016
Thanks a great deal for this review Sir, you are correct...I recommend Rain Gun on well drained soils and should be used in hot afternoons.
noblefarm:
Thanks boss for this thread. I have use rain gun nd spray tube. The problem I have with rain gun is, it requires a lot of water nd big pressure engine for it to go far. Again it can cause flooding, then it looks like it hardened the soil cause of d force with which it rains. Again drip water goes in dipper that sprinkler/spray tube.

As a rule I encourage anyone who wants to buy any irrigation kit to inquire and consult well with the seller/consultant, asking them technical questions even before they buy.

They should ONLY buy after they are satisfied with the answers gotten and are sure its the best solution for them.

DON'T buy any irrigation kit simply because someone says its best you use it, remember its YOU and not the seller/adviser that bears any challenges that may arise thereafter.

Rain Gun Spray Length....Some suppliers and sellers sadly lie about the range the rain gun can deliver, This is because you cannot easily know the spray length of the Rain guns by looking at them but I will show you how to know the length based on the model.

The range of PY 20 Rain Gun Sprinkler is 15 - 20m radius(Maximum)
The range of PY30 Rain Gun Sprinkler is 25 - 30m radius(Maximum)
The range of PY40 Rain Gun Sprinkler is 35 - 40m radius(Maximum)
The Range of PY 50 Rain Gun Sprinkler is 45 - 50m radius(Maximum)

We still have the uncommon models like the 40PY2 with a maximum radius of 50m, this is the one I pre-order from a big manufacturer in China.

Thanks for your observation Sir. There are many ways to identify a good rain gun sprinkler, in fact there are different types of Rain Gun Sprinkler with different Prices. I will list the Rain Guns we can procure and the prices(though this change with time).

Ways to know a good Rain Gun
1. Quality of Material...The material used determines the price, the ones I have procured for my clients is made of Zinc alloy and does not corrode easily, some use plastics+zinc alloy or other materials.

2. Weight...An average low cost 2 inch Rain gun weighs 2.5 to 3Kg, anything lower then this is a toy. You don't want to pay so much money to get a toy that cannot withstand strong water pressure. Do you? There are quality Rain Guns that weigh up to 10Kg though, but they cost over N130,000 ooo cheesy

3. Rain Gun Length....Some suppliers and sellers sadly lie about the range the rain gun can deliver, This is because you cannot easily know the spray length of the Rain guns by looking at them but I will show you how to know the length based on the model.

PoliticsFG Warns Land Grabbers To Quit Communication Ministry’s Facility In Ipaja by Kalusam(op):
The Federal Government has called on land grabbers (‘omoniles’) who laid siege to land belonging to Ministry of Communication, International Radio Monitoring Station in Ipaja area of Lagos to quit the facility.

The 1 kilometre by .8 kilometre land of the ministry had been under siege by land grabbers who claim they have court judgment to recover the land from government. Barr. Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, Minister of Communications, gave the warning in Lagos on Thursday when he visited the facility.

Shortly after the tour of the facility where he met the Omoniles on ground, the minister told Independent that “as minister of communications, the International Radio Monitoring Station here is under my supervisory purview.”

He explained that the land was acquired by the government since 1974 and gazetted in 1975 adding that the ministry’s monitoring stations were there, while members of staff physically live in staff quarters doing their legitimate jobs. “Along the line, we understood that some Omonile sued the Ministry of Communications and Ministry of Land and Urban Development to re-acquire this expansive 1km by .8km land purportedly that the ministry had abandoned the place”.

The minister alleged that because of collusion with some officials from Ministry of Housing and Omonile, they got default ruling purportedly handing over the land to them. “We have applied to set aside the ruling,” the minister said adding that the ruling on the application to set aside the ruling purportedly given in favour of Omonile is slated for April 27, 2016. “But Omonile went ahead and started selling the land for between N10 million and N12 million per plot”, adding that they chased away the security men in the facilities as well as threatened the ministry’s workers and residents in the staff quarters.

The minister who warned those that patronise the Omonile and buying land which belong to the Federal Government from to desist, otherwise, they do so in their own peril. “So much lawlessness is taking place here. They started demolishing Federal Government Properties.

They brought in bulldozer and caterpillars and started grading the land as if they are preempting the ruling of the courts. They are boasting that they will chase our staff out of the premises. But we expect the police to protect lives and properties of the ministry, and we are doing everything to ensure the police do that.

Until the courts have taken decision, trespassers and those who bought land from them must maintain status quo ante. This is a government property, properly acquired and still in use. If all parties had been properly notified, ministry of communication will not seat back and allow its property to be acquired by Omonile. They are lawless,” he stated.

Planted about 600 seeds on 210 square meter(1/3 of a standard farm plot) so far...expected stands per plot is 1800, and 10800 stands per acre!

Having this plant population is achievable but challenging to manage in dry season...you can choose to plant 1m x 1m by which you will have 4000 plants per acre, the choice is yours.

AgricultureRe: Make 200,000 Naira Or More Monthly Growing Indigenous Vegetables this Dry Season by Kalusam(op): 9:15pm On Mar 02, 2016
I understand your point, but truth is that price varies with a lot of factors, plant density, location of farm, distance to market, volume of harvested Ugu et al...that is why I encourage anyone doing Ugu farming to do their market research(at the market they will sell their produce) first, even before planting. Also note that price changes with season.
funstufz:
Oga Kalusam, you are doing a great job here I must commend you.

On the issue quoted, I think you should try and give average price maybe per kilo or per mound of ugu parking so as to prevent the same you mentioned earlier i.e. cheating of newbie farmers... You know this would go a long way to help us plan for the unforeseen..

thank you
