Urbangrow:
Thanks for your swift response. How big and how much does a space and a sack go for?
Secondly when you say per head, what do you mean?
If you can, please send pictures to help with visualising what you mean.
Thanks again
Thanks for your Questions, the answers to your question depends on who is buying from you. If you plant say 1 plot of Ugu, you can decide to sell 1/2 plot every week...that's what I mean by space.

As for the sacks, I advise you visit any of the Ugu markets across Lagos: Oyingbo, Sabo-Ikorodu, Igando, Egbeda, Ajah, e.t.c anyone near you, you will see how big the sack is and know the cost from them too. Sadly, I don't have any pictures of the sacks.

NOTE: ONLY the buyer of the Ugu can tell you how much(price per quantity) she will be willing to buy, so you have to negotiate well else you will be cheated.
AgricultureRe: Make 200,000 Naira Or More Monthly Growing Indigenous Vegetables this Dry Season by Kalusam(op): 6:02pm On Mar 02, 2016
There are 2 ways to sell ugu leafs, if grown in commercial quantity (1) Join the Ugu sellers association, register and make all due payments. Then supply your Ugu to the market from your farm and sell at retail prices at the market. (2) Contact several market women who sells Ugu and are already association members, they come to you farm and buy either per space or per head of arranged Ugu, tied with a sack bag. .

You can also sell to several family friends or affinity groups at retail prices and/or supply to grocery stores and Food vendors and make even more money.
Urbangrow:
Hi Kalusam,
read your thread and I must say well done on the good work and information you share. I will like to know how do you sell your Ugu to your customers i.e how do u bunch them for sale? I am looking to go into Ugu production as I currently do it for personal consumption.
Thank you

AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 12:48pm On Mar 02, 2016
While I appreciate your comment, it does not negate the facts I posted earlier. How many farmers can afford doing drip on 10 acres this season?

Second, contrary to your opinion Sir someone on this forum uses Rain Gun connected to a large water tank.

Are you also telling me you will use less labour to install drip irrigation on say, 1 acre?

As regards the distance of the Rain Gun, I agree with you on the fact that it is pump dependent however, you can move it around the farm until it covers the area you won't it to...you can NOT try that with drip, you know.

If you have used both Rain Gun and Drip Irrigation tell us the pros and cons(based on your experience), we will love to learn.
Paulordiah:
drip system is a lot better then rain gun. any system that still needs labour input will not help, rain guns require large water source . and the distance covered by the rain gun ( which is it's advantage),is dependent on the pump.
AgricultureRe: Thinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op):
What is the advantages of Rain Gun Sprinkler over Drip?

*Rain Gun Irrigation plays the role of Nitrogen fixation. One of the major nutrient plant requires is Nitrogen. Atmospheric air contains 78% of nitrogen. As the Rain Gun resembles Rain, the water dissolves the nitrogen from air and gives it to soil, thereby adding nutritive value to soil. This is one of the reasons for increase in yield.

* Reduces pest and insects attack: Pests and insects get washed away during Rain Gun irrigation.

Other advantages over drip irrigation are:

Less Cost: For one acre of installation of drip cost around NGN240,000+/-, whereas by using Rain Gun System, the cost comes round NGN50,000 only. If a farmer owns 10 acres of farm land if he is interested in drip, he has to install drip for the whole 10 acres at a cost of NGN2,400,000+/- where as if he use Rain gun, with a single Rain Gun of NGN50,000 he can irrigate at least 2 acres of land by shifting the gun properly. Drip irrigation cannot be shifted.

*Clogging problem In drip, the water oozes out through a small hole less than 1 mm, which gets clogged by the calcium carbonate and other chemicals available in water. So, after a period of one year most of the drippers get clogged. In Rain Gun, there is no clogging problem irrespective of the quality of water.

*Less Maintenance.

AgricultureThinking Of Dry Season Farming? Your Irrigation Questions Answered Here! by Kalusam(op): 7:11am On Feb 26, 2016
This post has been long overdue, been thinking of helping fellow farmers on this forum by giving advise on the best kinds of irrigation for their farm for FREE. Yes that's right for F.R.E.E, no strings attached. I have been doing that via phone calls or whatsapp but decided to bring it on here.

Irrigation farming is indeed profitable but you need to make sure you put things in place before you start. You need to understand that by doing some feasibility studies to be sure the crops you will irrigate is worth investing in irrigation for, in terms of the value the crops accrue during the dry season.

Next you need to look for an irrigation solution that suits your budget as well as will give you the results you require, buying an irrigation technology for say 100k won't automatically give you additional income, its the results that matter not the amount of money you put into irrigation.

Make sure of the water you will use to water the crop, testing the PH and/or heavy metals content is very important else you might be feeding your crops with poison which ultimately mean you are growing poison to your consumers!

Also make sure you install your Irrigation kits properly using a professional plumber, you can DIY sometimes cheesy

Please feel free to drop your irrigation challenges or questions here, let's discuss...#RemainBlessed

Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba said "The worst people to serve are the Poor people. Give them free, they think it's a trap. Tell them it's a small investment, they'll say can't earn much.

Tell them to come in big, they'll say no money. Tell them try new things, they'll say no experience. Tell them it's traditional business, they'll say hard to do.

Tell them it's a new business model, they'll say it's MLM. Tell them to run a shop, they'll say no freedom. Tell them run new business, they'll say no expertise.

They do have somethings in common: They love to ask google, listen to friends who are as hopeless as them, they think more than an university professor and do less than a blind man. Just ask them, what can they do. They won't be able to answer you.

My conclusion: Instead of your heart beats faster, why not you just act faster a bit; instead of just thinking about it, why not do something about it. Poor people fail because on one common behaviour: Their Whole Life is About Waiting."

So what kind of person does this make you?

The best time to act on any Agribusiness opportunity was the time you heard of it...the other time is NOW. Don't wait for any government or person because delay is dangerous, your destiny in your hands.

Apply for the dry season indigenous farming training today and be glad you did!

OluchiDelly:
Bro what is the right pump in hp that can supply the right pressure to the 50m Rain gun, how much can such a pumping machine go for?
Do I need to improvise for the "stand" or it is included in the pack?
As for the right pump in H.P. required to operate the Rain Gun, the Minimum requirement is 5 HP. This even depends on the Kg/Sq. cm (KSC) the pump generates.

The standard minimum requirement for the Rain Gun is 2 KSC pressure. No pump less than 5 HP will generate 2 KSC Pressure. So, the requirement is >5H.P and up to 20 H.P. Better result can be obtained at KSC more than 2.75. So for best results, choose any pump higher than 5 H.P that you can afford.

I don't sell pumping machine and do not know the current price, you can get this info from a plumbing store where things like these are sold.

I ONLY pre-order the Rain Gun, pictures of previous orders are on this thread(Stand not included in the 'pack'). Hence, you will have to construct the Stand locally(a welder can help you do this) . Thanks and #RemainBlessed

Read the ideas you've got there; great we are thinking in the same direction even though we've not discussed about this previously . Was chatting with my friend last week on how his journey to his Dad's farm went...he told me something that let my jaw dropping! His Dad harvested and stored about 9 bags of Cocoa pods and they sold for 450k...my guy got a gift of 100k from Daddy for his 1 week stay, end of story. Now, Imagine if they were exporting them?
AgricultureRe: Why I Want To Quit Farming This Year And My Plan For 2016 by Kalusam(m): 10:34pm On Jan 29, 2016
Following keenly my brother!
jasper7:
I want to quit farming this year... I want to go into processing and marketing of food products. I want to manage farmers. Not because farming is not profitable but because some really good farmers I know are suffering. Really suffering. And that is not down to the abundance of food but because they lack the right management practises. It's a big problem and I want to put in my quota in solving it.

I have been restless for a while now. Very restless. Nigeria's economy is sinking with the price of oil.

Statistics show that Nigeria spent 35billion dollars on food importation in 2015. And made a meagre 350 million from food exportation. This is a serious problem. Nigeria is in Trouble

I am speculating that more Nigerians will die of hunger than boko haram's terrorism in the next 10 years if we do not save our economy.

How can we save this economy of ours... There are areas of agriculture that is sweeping in foreign exchange for the country on a daily basis. And there are other areas that we can close up shop. And stop sending our precious cash abroad.

I have been doing some research. I think every well meaning farmer irrespective of his farming interests should have a level of export product to gain some foreign exchange.

We can turn this economic problem to our favour. We can make it the best thing that has happened to us. Believe me, a lot of attention will be transferred to people with exportable product. Considering that Nigeria is desperately scrambling for ways to revive its economy.

Let's set up plantations, farm settlements an farm estates for exportable products.

Hotmas911 already caught the vision as he is setting up a cashew plantation in ogbomosho (Land of Cashew ).

With this I have tried to streamline what I will do in 2016.

I'll be sharing them in 2 posts. You are welcome to partner, copy, criticize (constructively) or give your own view point or idea to improve what I already have.
