Wow, my research on this is on-going. Will share them here with time. I understand you can get it somewhere in Mushin, Lagos ntyce: Also read somewhere that it can kill nematodes and parasites due to the buildup of heat beneath the nylon. Where can one get the nylons or can one modify some of the bags being sold in the market? |

The holes on the polythene allows rainfall to enter. However, you can use a drip irrigation system to grow these crops. Actually the polythene conserves soil water and warms the soil! ntyce: How about penetration of water to the soil, won't it negatively affect that? |

This model for growing Pineapple using nylon covers should be applied to other crops like water melon and cucumber to discourage weed growing. I think this will go a long way in controlling weeds, as manual weeding may destroy the vines thereby adversely affecting output or what do you guys think? |

I cannot categorically tell you whether it will have a bad effect or not. Fertilizers are meant to supplement available soil nutrients, so how rich is your soil in Nitrogen? Is it necessary to add more of Nitrogen rather than phosporus or other elements? Answering these will help you to make a more informed decision. RealChris: Thanks Kalusam.... I will buy that next time. I hv bought Urea n NPK 15:15:15 to mix them and apply. Hope it will have no effect on the vegetables.... Thanks once more Kalusam |

Hello Pappy, You mean 500 grams of Kaolack is N4,000 or do you rather mean 50grams? Pappyshoes: It's actually a mix of sandy loamy soil, water retention is very low. Hybrid seeds' costs: F1 Koloss....N1,600.00 per can of 50 gramms. Kaolack....N4,000 per can of 500 gramms. |

Hello Chris, Urea is a single fertilizer which contains mostly Nitrogen (which is essential for the vegetative growth of plants). But remember that as you want to have vegetative growth, you also don't want to have yellow leaf or weak vines, so while urea is good N.P.K will be better, I suggest you use N.P.K 20:10:10 or Urea+Farm yard manure. RealChris: pls I need to know the kind of fertilizer to apply to my ugu.... Urea or NPK which one is best? Someone said Urea is good for leaves while NPK is good for seed... I dont know how true is it... I need leaves.... Ya advice pls...Thanks |

smartoskie: Thanks. But are there companies that make use of it in Nigeria I don't know, you will need to do a research. smartoskie: Please i need your sincere advise. I am presently working in a Financial Institution with monthly pay of about #200,000 but am not really happy with my job because of the so much stress invoved. Now my issue is i have a three acre of land with borehole and generator and planning to do sprinkler irrigation system for dry season planting of vegatable (Ugwu, Green, Ewedu and Shoko). My question is, is the venture worthwhile, can it generate my present monthly pay? can i resign to face the farming business squarly. Please ur sincere advise is needed. My sincere advise is never quit your job until you have a sustainable monthly income from your Agribusiness venture. Agribusiness is a lucrative yet risky venture(if you don't get it right from the beginning) and its not a get-rich-quick scheme. Check out the blog I wrote on Dry season Vegetable farming in Nigeria to have an idea: https://kalusam./2013/02/17/growing-dry-season-vegetables-sucessfully/Have a great day. |

The thread is going nice. We should remember we are here to help ourselves and not accuse one another. Please between F1 Koloss and Kaolack which one is bought most by customers. I ask because every business is for the customers, while you may breed a water melon that's large, if your customer don't like it then you might have wasted time and money satisfying yourself, not your customers! |

Great work and your soil is indeed suitable for this. How much did you get the hybrid seeds? Pappyshoes: @ Magnam, great work, keep it up. 18-10-14... It rained heavily today, but I transplanted some water melon seedlings (F1 Koloss) and planted some seeds(Kaolack). I couldn't spray the grown ones with the Cypeforce 'cos of heavy downpour. Today's weather is favourable for transplanted ones, thank God. |
