In 1998 when INEC was registering new parties , the criteria was that each party should have a prescence in all the states. Based on that criteria....PDP, APP and AD were registered.

Gani Fawehimni, the Senior Advocate of the Masses, then went to court...the Supreme Court, and got a court ruling that threw out the 'prescence in every state critierion' and made INEC register any willing party provided they paid the registration fees.

Hence the 73 parties we have now.

And Lord knows the kind of noise that would erupt if the National Assembly attempts to pass a law to restrict the number of parties.
