Oh, I was at the Iberekodo some 13 years ago. I love the serene environment. I mostly enjoyed the beach and the fresh fish.

Awori descendants of Lagos (and Ogun) love to fondly remind ourselves that we’re Omo Olofin.

A Brief Historical Note:
Oduduwa was the first Olofin of the Ife country; and his base was in the country’s capital city — Ile-Ife.

His earliest descendants established kingdoms at far and near places within and outside the Ife country —e.g. Lagos.

Some of these kingdoms founded by his earliest descendants adopted and have retained the same title — Olofin.

The first and principal kingdom of all Aworis (which is based in Lagos till date) adopted this title and have retained it till date.

The word “Alaafin” is a dialectal variation of the word “Olofin”. They mean exactly one and the same thing.

Some Yoruba kingdoms (in parts of present-day Kogi state) use the dialectal variation “Alaofin” which are all the same.

In sum then, all kingdoms descended from Oduduwa are ruled and inhabited by persons who identify as Omo Olofin.

However, some persons have identified as such more loudly than others. However, the Aworis appear to be the loudest in this specific regard.

Some honorable mentions who have loudly identified as Omo Olofin are, in no particular order, as follows:

The Olofin of Isheri-Olofin (the principal monarch of all Aworis); the Olu-Mushin of Mushin; the Osolo of Isolo; the Elegbe of Egbe; the Oni-Iba of Iba; the Oloto of Oto-Awori; the Oni-Ijanikin of Ijanikin; the Oni-Igbesa of Igbesa; the Oni-Itire of Itire-Awori; the Olubeshe of Ibeshe (Ikorodu); the Elegushi of Ikate; the Olota of Ota; the Ajalaye of Ipetu-Ijesha; the Deji of Akure; and the Ooni of Ife among several other to innumerable for me to recall.

We, Yorubas, were instrumental to these two dark and horrible moments of their modern history.

Yet we are asking them not to be bitter (‘in peace’). I think we are asking them for too much.

Yes, their bitterness will fizzle out naturally over the course of a few ndi-Igbo generations to come.

But in the meantime, we must be Yorubas enough to allow them be bitter (‘in peace’).

I used to lash out at whoever I heard committed suicide until I found myself in that evil shoes, then my view about them changed from disgust to pity and sadness whenever I read someone committed suicide.
