PoliticsDeadman’ In Court To Stop Rivers APC Congress by kcmichael(op): 7:59pm On Oct 23, 2019
Late Jonathan Nkpumeh is among 23 aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress, APC that dragged the party to court to stop the planned Ward Local government and state congresses from holding in Rivers State.

This is according to the Counsel to Nkpumeh’s family, D.U Ekesu.

Ekesu made this known in an affidavit tendered before Justice G.O Ollor who presided over the suit filed by Ibrahim Umar and others against the National Working Committee of the APC.

He wondered how a dead man gave his consent to be added in the suit, stressing that Jonathan Nkpumeh died over a year ago before the suit filed in August.

Ekesu, therefore, asked the court to strike out the matter seeking to stop the Ward, Local government and state congresses of the APC in Rivers state.

According to him, “We are perplexed as representatives of the family to learn that a dead man gave consent for a suit to be filed on his behalf.

“So we have filed an affidavit of fact deposing those veracities that the Late Jonathan Nkpume could not have from his grave given consent to those who filed the suit.

“As a matter of fact, his death had occurred about a year ago before they came to file the suit.”

Reacting to the development, Counsel to Ibrahim Umar and others, Henry Bello told newsmen that the court will determine if the documents meets the requirement of the Evidence Act.

“The affidavit of death was sworn on the 17th of September but Umar’s suit was filed on the 12th of September so it appears that the affidavit was filed contrary to Section 83 of the Evidence Act because it was made in contemplation of the suit,” he said.

DAILY POST reports that the development and the decision of another set of 19 aggrieved members of the APC stalled hearing on the suit instituted by Umar.
PoliticsOCTOBER 23, 2019 Bayelsa Guber: APC Planning To Rig, Unleash Violence, Diri Tell by kcmichael(op): 5:24pm On Oct 23, 2019
Diplomats seek credible governorship poll

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has alerted the United States and the United Kingdom about plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to collude with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to rig the November 16 governorship election in the state.

Senator Diri also raised concerns over intelligence reports indicating that the main opposition party in the state was planning to intimidate voters and unleash violence during the election.

Diri spoke yesterday in Yenagoa after separate meetings with officials of the US Embassy and the British High Commission.

The US delegation was led by the Consul General, Claire Pierangelo while the Second Secretary (Political), Mr. Sarabjit Singh, led the British High Commission team.

The Director, Media and Publicity Committee of the PDP Campaign Council, Dr. Jonathan Obuebite, in a press release, quoted Diri as saying that the APC is not planning for a free, fair and transparent election but rather plotting to intimidate, threaten and kill voters.

“They are planning to collude with INEC to undermine democracy in our state. All that we hear is that the APC already has the result sheets, which will be filled in and that INEC will only announce those results already written.

“We also hear that the APC will use the military as they did in Rivers State during the governorship election where soldiers were drafted in to intimidate voters and a lot of people were killed. We hear that the APC will collude with INEC to ensure that Bayelsa is taken by force whether the people like it or not.

“These are very serious concerns for us. So, we urge you to send your observers like you have always done. All we are asking for is a free, fair and transparent election. This is why we are connecting and campaigning with the people as well as lobbying them. We do not want violence or crisis. Elections are not for the use of guns but the ballot.”

The PDP flag bearer further alleged that the APC was recruiting militants and criminals within and outside the state to unleash violence and ensure they get a result that is favourable to them.

He emphasised the importance of a credible poll, noting that the PDP was a peaceful party that has produced a former president from the state, produced all the governors of the state and is poised to repeat the same feat on November 16.

“All that we are appealing for and want is a level playing field, for INEC to be fair and the security agencies to be professional in handling the electoral processes,” Diri said.

He said the United States and the United Kingdom were known for freedom and democracy, which he noted had grown to a level that is stable while Nigeria’s democracy is still fledgling and growing but appears to have been damaged and under threat.

Diri cited the elections in Osun and Kano states where it is believed that the PDP won but was denied victory even as he drew attention to the plight of his party’s members that have been displaced in Nembe-Bassambiri in the state and the need for the military to leave the community, saying they were aiding and abetting the APC.

He called on the international community to ensure that democracy was not hampered in the country. According to him, democracy was hemorrhaging in Nigeria and if not quickly checked, it could lead to its disintegration.

Diri also appealed to the diplomats to impress on INEC to be fair as anything short of a credible election could spark violence that may affect the entire country, which he said is already bedeviled with security challenges.

In her remarks, the US envoy, Claire Pierangelo, commended Diri’s disposition and commitment to a peaceful electoral process.

She said they were in Bayelsa to meet with all the political players to discuss the upcoming election and expressed the hope that the poll would be peaceful.

“It is our sincere hope that we see free, fair, credible and peaceful election. These are important tenets of a successful democracy and this is what the people of Bayelsa want. We will come back as observers in November to help document and hopefully be a positive presence,” she said.

Similarly, Mr. Sarabjit Singh said they have been meeting the candidates of the different political parties, talking about how important it is that the election is free, fair and credible and for the people to refrain from engaging in violence.

“We came to Bayelsa to meet you, your main opponent, David Lyon (of the APC) and other candidates as well to get your thoughts and opinions on how and what you think about the election and its process,” he said.
PoliticsCourt Orders Army To Pay Neighbourhood Watch Applicants N398m As Compensation by kcmichael(op): 11:13am On Oct 18, 2019
A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, ordered the Nigerian Army to pay N398m as compensation to the state Neighbourhood and Safety Corps applicants for disrupting their training and also tagging them members of a militia group in November 2018.

The 3,998 shortlisted persons, whose training was disrupted by soldiers in Nonwa in the Tai Local Government Area of the state, had approached the court and demanded N20bn in damages from the Nigerian Army.

The Court ordered the Nigerian Army to pay each of the applicants N100,000.

Defendants in the matter were the Nigerian Army, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, and the General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Port Harcourt.
The court, presided over by Justice S. C. Amadi, declared that the disruption of the training and recruitment process by soldiers was illegal and dehumanising to the applicants.

The court also held that the army’s claim that it acted on a tip-off that the agency was illegally training a militia group was misleading as evidence before it proved that it was duly informed.

Justice Amadi ordered the defendants to pay a general sum of N100,000 as compensation to each of the applicants

PoliticsAPC Cannot Score Up To 20% Of Votes In Kogi, Bayelsa – PDP by kcmichael(op): 8:06pm On Oct 10, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the rejected All Progressives Congress (APC) and their unpopular governorship candidates cannot score up 20 percent of the votes in the November 16 Kogi and Bayelsa states governorship elections, respectively.

The PDP says the APC will also fail to attain the statutory 25 percent of the votes in two-third of local governments of the states, as it cannot boast of genuine followership having failed to consolidate any foothold in the two states.

This is so because it is overwhelmingly evident that the PDP has the highest demography of members, supporters and volunteers in all the electoral units, wards and local governments, ready for the polls and not even the APC’s recourse to violence, blackmail, manipulations and rituals can sway the resolve of the people in both states.

Moreover, there is already a consensus that APC’s candidates; the anti-people Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state as well as unskilled David Lyon of Bayelsa state are no match for PDP’s versatile Engr. Musa Wada and cerebral Senator Douye Diri’s popularity in their respective states.

For the people of Kogi state, the November 16 election is a determined march for freedom; for inevitable emancipation from the stranglehold of the repressive, vindictive, exploitative and corrupt APC administration.

The Kogi election is a direct referendum against Governor Yahaya Bello whose administration has become synonymous with deprivation, poverty, violence and death, most times by suicides.

November 16 is a date Governor Yahaya Bello must keep with the millions he viciously deprived of their means of livelihood; a date with millions who have suffered untold hardship over unpaid salaries and pensions; a date with Kogi youths whose common patrimony he squandered in his reckless wasteful misgovernance; indeed, nothing will deliver Governor Bello from the crushing verdict of the ballot box.

Our party therefore counsels Governor Bello to desist from his crude blackmails and resort to thuggery, as he would soon realize that he is now alone.

In Bayelsa, the APC, having no toehold, is almost non-existent as the people are already rallied behind our candidate, Senator Diri, in their collective quest to consolidate on the good governance entrenched by Governor Seriake Dickson.

The APC should know that there is no way the people of Bayelsa will contemplate allowing a party which has proven to be anti-people, ideologically vacuous and corrupt, to be any where near their government house.

The PDP therefore counsels the APC to end its pipe-dream of winning in the two states as such is completely unattainable under the prevailing reality.

PoliticsRivers: APC Humiliating Me Despite My Sacrifices – Senator Abe by kcmichael(op): 2:37pm On Sep 18, 2019
A former lawmaker representing of Rivers Southeast Senatorial District in the 7th and 8th Senate, Magnus Abe, has cried out over what he described as “miseries, humiliations and attacks” he is alleged suffering in his party, the All Progressives Congress APC.

Abe said that him and others put their lives on the line to birth the party in Rivers State.

The former lawmaker and governorship aspirant, further stated that he was facing oppression in the hands of the friend.

Abe made his claims in a statement he shared on Facebook on Tuesday, said: “I have chosen not to be bitter towards anyone and not to teach bitterness to anyone. I know that if I teach people that Mr. A is the source of every failure and poverty, I will absolve myself and those I teach of all responsibility for whatever challenges and the difficulties that they are going through, then I can be a super leader, because I have provided a convenient scapegoat and I can absolve myself from scrutiny responsibility.

“Whether it is the South African leaders telling their people that it is the fault of foreign nationals that they are poor or white people in the United States saying Mexicans and immigrants are coming to steal their country, the end result is always the same: bitterness, violence, misery, failure and more poverty.

“In my world, bitterness towards anyone is a sign of failure. It means you admit that the other person has the power to make your life. No one has that power over my life.

“Rather than tell my supporters of all the miseries, humiliations and attacks that have been my lot in the APC, the party that we put our lives on the line to birth in Rivers State, rather than tell them about the oppression I am facing at the hands of the friend for whose sake I wept on the floor of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I tell them that their life is their responsibility and that no man can alter their destinies. It is our responsibility to identify what we want, where we need to be and how we can get there. I tell them to come and let us move mountains, if need be.

“We will enjoy our journey, as challenging as it may be and we will not just travel hopefully, but we will get there. I do not know your destination, but I know that the ultimate objective of bitterness is violence. No amount of violence can help you, if you do not know where you are going.”

Abe, a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), when Amaechi was governor, also recalled how a friend sent him a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson, stating that life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well.

He said: “No matter what anyone else may have done, we must start any honest and meaningful evaluation with ourselves. What did I do, what have I done and most importantly, what can I do better?

“Examining yourself honestly is not an automatic admission of failure; it is rather an opportunity to improve. Money is important, but leaders should not be judged only by how much money they can give.”

He also stated that he believe that inspiring people and motivating them to reach within themselves and not to focus on anyone else would give them the will to examine themselves and their leadership in the areas in which action or inaction could be reviewed and improved.

He noted that such model of leadership was difficult, tasking and could not provide leaders with docile followers, who would do whatever the leaders asked them to do, but would provide them with committed associates, who would understand exactly what was at stake.

“They (the followers) cannot blame you (the leader) or blame anyone else, because they understand exactly where they are going, why it is important to go there and they know it is their responsibility to get there.

“Leadership which emphasises individual responsibility is tedious and painful, but ultimately it stands a chance of achieving what bitterness and scapegoating others will never achieve.

“It can actually help move the society in the direction of unity, peace, progress and prosperity. We must all realise our fallibility and the fact that no matter how good we may be, we can be better and no matter how well we have done, we can still do better

PoliticsRivers APC Stakeholders Reject Caretaker Committee, Says They Won’t Take Part by kcmichael(op): 6:59pm On Sep 11, 2019
Rivers All Progressive Congress APC Stakeholders has rejected the caretaker committee says it is clearly an orchestration to deepen the woes of the party.

In a communique issued at the end of an extraordinary APC stakeholders meeting held on the 11th of September, 2019, at Port Harcourt.

After a strenuous, no holds barred deliberations and situational review of issues affecting the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), we arrived at the following decisions:

1. That as critical stakeholders of the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who toiled and sweated under very difficult and dangerous circumstances to build the party in Rivers State, we are appalled and dismayed by the current situation of the party in the State.

2. That Nigerians are aware that the crisis in Rivers APC was set off by the manner in which last congresses were deliberately mismanaged in 2018, resulting in catastrophic and unprecedented consequences for the party.

3. That various efforts by different leaders of the party across the nation to find a solution to the challenges of Rivers APC before the 2019 elections were all rebuffed by the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, meaning that all well intended efforts came to nothing.

4. We note with concern that the party is yet again threading the same route of exclusion and disdain for the rights and feelings of party members that plunged the Rivers chapter of the APC into needless crisis resulting in the party being denied participation in the last general elections in Rivers State.

5. That as critical stakeholders, and bearing in mind the circumstances of Rivers APC, we were not consulted by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in its decision to appoint a caretaker committee in Rivers State nor does the Committee reflect the diversity of the party in the state. The so called caretaker committee members are simply cronies of the Minister of Transportation, their objective and purpose is clear, they were parties and participants in the actions that brought the party to its knees in Rivers State. Apart from being unknown to the constitution, by all rules of justice and fairness they cannot provide a solution to our present challenges.

6. We therefore reject the caretaker committee as it is clearly an orchestration to deepen the woes of the party, and we urge all members of the APC in Rivers State to remain steadfast in the pursuit of justice.

7. Based on extant judicial pronouncements, and the report of the Governor Lalong Committee as adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great party which stated clearly that where congress could not hold, the existing executives were to manage the affairs of the party; Chief Peter Odike by the rules of the Party should have been consulted as Chairman of the APC in Rivers State.

8. Therefore we will not take part in the congresses announced by Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, and sanctioned by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party for the reasons that we were not consulted and all the issues raised by the various judicial pronouncements, and the internal contradictions within the party in Rivers State, have neither been addressed nor resolved. There appears to be no political will to tackle these issues in order to rebuild the party in Rivers State.

9. Let us urge all members of our great party to remain committed and steadfast and to keep faith with the all Progressives Congress (APC). Hopefully, the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Presidential Election Tribunal should rekindle our confidence that justice will be done, and our party in Rivers State will be rebuilt. Let us stay the course, after this darkness will surely come a glorious dawn.
