Many thanks @KDK,

Sure I did send her mine and that of my wife ... but she said the VO didn’t even look at any of the documents she goes with.

I also suspected the same thing like you did on the issue of the period she wants to stay but that was just the truth cos she has to take care of some other family related issues back home which won’t make her stay longer.

I will reapply for her and possibly travel down just to follow her to the venue (I sure know I won’t be allowed in but just to boost my mum’s confidence a little
bit because I know she fidget a lot so that might be another reason)

Thanks for your advice bro

uwc sir,

The thing with the VO's is dat they may not prompt you for documents and even when u offer it, they wave it off most times. You will be the one that will have to find a way to get it to them. For instance, she could have passed it with her passport when the pp was requested. Even at that, there is no guarantee. Like I have said in the past, they sometimes have done their evaluations before you came in and it's just for you to come in person to refute or affirm what they evaluated.

From the bolded, I can assume she sent the wrong signals which perhaps made the VO suggested that three months may not be enough. You need to coach her very well. She has to be very relaxed and make her understand that her visiting now is not a do or die and that you can always file for her so she should relax and should pay attention to those being interviewed ahead of her. Try to emphasise the part of being relaxed and answering the questions confidently. The VO's read body language.

We have now applied for a two years visit visa and Paid for priority cos we have to attend the grad but 10 workings days with no better update . All I see on the tracker is with ukvi. Please what do I do? I paid way too much for this and don’t thinks it fair.636 pounds for the three of us

Have you gotten your passport back?

Some posts up here crack me up ...

Well, guys my mum attended her interview today as stated on here before now seeking for advice and she was denied sad.

I invited her to visit me here ... btw, I migrated to US legally so that’s out of the reasons I can think of. Meanwhile, below is her transcripts as I was told:

Mum: Good morning
VO: Good morning madam
VO: Where are you going to in US
Mum: Bleep state
VO: who is inviting you
Mum: My son, to visit him and his family
VO: How many kids did he have
Mum: 1
VO: how old is the child
Mum: 2 years
VO: what do you do
Mum: Business
VO: What type of business?
Mum: xxxxxxx yyyy zzzzz
VO: how long do you want to stay
Mum: 3 months
VO: but 3 months is too small you can stay a bit longer than that
Mum: No just 3 months is what I plan to stay
VO: how many kids you have
Mum: 3 (2 here and 1 in US)
VO: how long has your son been in the states
Mum: Bleep years
VO: sorry bla bla bla

Still trying to fathom what went wrong...

I will reapply for her one more time again, thereafter, file for her.

Guys did anyone see anything wrong with her responses or could it be the current waves of rejection going on?

I recall you asked me about parents that were invited. For some reasons, being old is no longer an advantage at the US embassy and it is sad. The only thing I can suspect here is the VO asking whether she wouldn't want to stay longer as 3 months is too small. This can be seen in two ways:
1. The VO is fishing to see if she harbours any intention to stay more than she stated. (if the VO sensed ur mum is hiding something)
2. The VO is genuinely suggesting that 3 months is too short a visit.

Did you send her a copy of your passport like I suggested? You should coach her on how to answer questions as well. If she is not looking at the face of the VO or not smooth with her responses, it could be discerned as not be truthful. I remember the case of a friend that stutters; she narrated her interview and from what i could gather i saw nothing wrong. So I told her that if she wouldn't mind risking it, she should apply again. So i coached her on how to answer questions but most importantly, I told her to make sure that she tells the VO that she stutterers and as such may hesitate or prolong words so the VO should please be patient with her (weird as it seems, she has claimed some sort of immunity in that regard). Long and short of it, she was given. i think when you hesitate, they may think you are concocting a lie.

Had my interview today, wasn’t given the visa, my interview thus went like this.

Me: hello Good morning
VO: Goodmorning
VO: what countries have you visited the last two years
Me: 2016 Southafrica, 2017 UAE
VO: why are you going to Indianapolis
Me: To attend my bestfriends wedding where am to play the role of his best man.
VO: are you married?
Me: I and my fiancée ain’t ready to commit to marriage yet.

Handed me white paper and my passport. Well I really don’t know where it went wrong, only God knows, of the over twenty persons before me, only a lady whose son is a doctor in America and one family who were based in Qatar were given.

Sorry about the refusal.
The response on reason for travelling is not very strong yet acceptable.

Your response to the marriage question was honest and that is good. However, it does not show a good tie. Like someone mentioned earlier, you may abscond if you see the yankee ladies in their scanty wears during this summer. grin . My broda, forget, the temptation is real. If i were to be the VO, I would not approve your visa.

From the above, I see he didn't ask you about your job, meaning he was not interested in proving alternative ties you may have or from your DS-160 form, he feels a job tie does not suffice.

BTW, how did your best friend enter and remain in the US?

Your comment on the number of refusals prior to yours confirms the difficulty in obtaining visas.

Pls any can help, I need urgent answers!

My friend has a UK Citizen who has agreed to sponsor her to come join him in UK from Ghana.

But the problem now is how to go about it, the UK guy is asking her to get some documents from the place she works like reference letter from her work place.

Pls I want to ask, if a UK citizen could write a letter of sponsorship for you, what other documents do you need to get you going, and what kind of visa?

At some place, I read you only need the sponsorship letter and visa will be issued to you and at other times, I'm also reading you will still need some documents like financial worthiness to get the visa after getting the sponsorship letter.

Now my friend is confused. Please anyone here with the right info?

Pls I need urgent answers.
Thanks.

Is she applying from Nigeria Or Ghana?

In any case,in addition to the sponsorship letter, let her provide proof of ties to her country like proof of employment (employment letter, letter of introduction, payment slip), statement of account with reasonable flow and balance, family ties (immediate family like kids, spouse, etc),proof of properties and any other document that she believes will support her case of returning back to Nigeria. Please have it in mind that their primary concerns are whether she will return and will not be a burden to their system.

I prepared for a long interview at the POE so I carried all my burden of proof relating to the child birth (I don’t want stories that touch). Landing cards are no longer in use at IAH.

ME: Good afternoon
CBP: Good afternoon.
ME: (Handed in my passport without waiting for him to ask.) (I also made sure I displayed my bundle of old passport which from their covers were looking very rugged. I wanted him to realise that I have travel history and USA is no big deal really)
CBP: Have you been in the states before?
ME: Yes, you can see the proof of my last visit in the old visa at the back of the passport. I was here in …..for child birth. However, I came in twice that year as I escorted them here and came back to escort them back.
CBP: Okay (Turned the passport to the last page and scrutunised it. He then turned to his screen to read for a while)
CBP: What are you here for?
Me: Business meeting in …….
CBP: When is the meeting?
Me: The meeting is for DD & DD but my company policy is for atleast 24hrs rest prior to meeting and before long haul travel. So I intend to stay 6 days.
CBP: Welcome back to the United States. Enjoy your visit sir.(Stamped me in for 6 months)
Me: Thank you very much and do have a nice day.
Time at CBP was about 2 mins max

I am back in Nigeria since. I spent just the 6 days i estimated.

I just pray the visa process will become easier and those people spoiling us for the embassy should please desist.

I wish all applicants the best.

I know people that have similar precedents and got their renewal visas denied.

I must call it a big luck and of course preparation on your part.

Thank you!
You are absolutely right. Even people with far better precedents have been denied. And this emphasises the point I have been trying to make, there is no clear cut way of having a visa approved. The US embassy interviews have no clear formula. One can have all the right boxes ticked and still get a denial. May God help is all.

This is a clear case of satisfying the burden of proof. Congratulations!!! There is nothing like over talking here, you are trying to prove your case. B1/B2 visa is a discretionary visa, so you have to appeal to their discretion truthfully. It's not rocket science. Congratulations once more.

Thanks so much. But with this US embassy, there don't seem to be a way of doing it right to be sure of getting the visa. I witnessed a lot of interviews that went well yet was refused. Some people answered their questions very well, had good travel history, had their burden of proofs, etc. But were refused. I remember the case of a lady who had a child about 8 yrs ago, she has been doing drop box, travel to the states every year (i got this from her interview as she was being asked questions pertaining to some of those travels). The VO even asked questions about her recent travel to france. Yet she was refused. This is someone that has done drop box several times. Yet one lady that has only been to Spain was issued the visa. It just shows there is no fast rule but we should try to tick all the boxes as much as we can and hope the system approves our visas.

Hello Nairalanders,
I heard a very disturbing incident that happened at the embassy very recently. According to my source,a lady's visa was approved and just as she was about leaving, she was called back by the same VO who interviewed her and guess what, her visa was revoked.

Is this possible?
This is sad. It is possible the VO saw something that was missed during the interview. This is so very sad. I saw a lady that was asked to report at the embassy when we were at the airport checking in. But i think some people have some unresolved issues that warrants such decisions.

Congrats bro and hope you enjoy your upcoming visit here.

I invited my mom for a visit and her date is in two weeks time.

Do you by chance noticed if parents who plan to visit their kids here being denied too?

Just curious sad

I have already visited and back in Nigeria.

I was not preview to parent that was invited. However, if you are have a US passport, I would strongly advise you send her the data page of your passport for her to give to the VO. I observed it swung the decision for a lady that was invited. As soon as the VO received the data page and punched some things into the system, she smiled and after further questions, she was issued.
Best of lucks because I am afraid that a lot of elderly people were not granted. Before, when you are elderly, it seems a bonus. With the US embassy these days, you just prepare as best as you can and pray God favours you.

Thanks to all the information on this thread and those on sister threads. I appreciate all contributors and information. God bless you all.
I have a longer preamble in the another thread, so if you like epistles, you can go there.( https://www.nairaland.com/4116999/usa-visit-visa-part-3/294#68927886 ).
I did drop box with my family but was asked to appear for interview. However, whilst my passport was still at the embassy , my office said i had to go for a meeting in the states. So blessedly, I got a nearer date. On the day of the interview, I decided to separate from my family since I am now going on business trip and not tourism.
Whilst on the queue i observed that there was a lot of denials even those going for business meetings from big organisations in the oil and gas sector. This even increased my anxiety as nothing seems sure with this embassy.
Anyway, I observed that there was a guy standing behind them and they sometimes, switch off their mic so as to seek his opinion on some cases. However, in all these, I had to admit that even though these VO’s were not friendly, they seemingly only followed what the systems gives as a summation of all their inputs. Or atleast that is what I believe. It even reminded me of a discussion I had with some people whilst on the queue. We discussed the possibility of them already deciding your case but interviewing to know if that decision should stand or not (Speculations).
At a time, this supposed supervisor went to a window and requested the next person. Before the other people in the three other windows had completed their interviews, this guy had sent his interviewee with a refusal. I calculated and said thank God, I am not going to that guy. This guy was not smiling at all. The guy before me went to him, same short interview, didn’t even give room for long stories. Still before the other guys has finished their interview, he sent this second interviewee away with a refusal. Then he called for the next person on the queue. I was thinking whether to say I decline to be interviewed today but when I thought of the trouble to get this interview date, I decided to proceed (what will be will be).
I proceeded with prayers to God almighty asking for Grace of God because this VO na one chance. I remembered the guy thatshared his transcript here after he was denied. He said he went to one buka to eat good food and step it down with a cold malt (he broke his fast or so). I was already thinking of where I can do same because with this kind of VO, only GOD can help your case.
Here is the transcript.
Me: Good morning Sir.
VO: Please, can I have your passport?
Me: Yes, you can but before you do, I need to update you on some information on my DS-160 form(since the guy didn’t smile, I wiped off my smile too)
VO: Okay, I am listening but pass me your passport.
Me: (Handing over the passport) The initial plan was for me to travel with my family for holidays in August so we did a drop box but whilst the passport was at the embassy, my organisation informed me that I have to attend an urgent meeting in Texas. I immediately informed the embassy but got no replies to several mails I sent (VO nodded as though in agreement as he gazed at the screen). I even tried getting an expedited date to no avail. Based on this and future planned office itinerary , I will no longer be travelling with my family for the holidays as earlier planned.
VO: (Keeping a straight face) Okay. What was your reason for traveling to the states the last time.
Me: To witness the birth of my child and accompany my family back to Nigeria just the way I escorted them when they left Nigeria.
VO: And your wife stayed for 4 months?
Me: Noooooo , she stayed 3 months (counting on my fingers).
VO: How much did you spend?
Me: $.......... (I tried bringing out the proof of payments, zero balance, etc)
VO: (Seeing my big folder) No need to show me.(I equipped myself thanks to this thread)
Me: Okay (But I still brought it out and mentioned the cents to the earlier amount I quoted)
VO: What is the DOB of your child?
Me: DD MM YYYY
One of the men from the other boxes came to seek his counsel so he paused the mic and attended to him after excusing himself politely.
VO: What do you do?
Me: I am a …….professional with ABC company (well known organisation).
VO: How much do you earn?
Me: I earn NXXXXXX but before tax
VO: Before tax ? (looking slightly surprised but regained his straight face)
Me: Yes but after tax it comes to (VO cuts in)
VO: No need. (still not smiling. I think he doesn’t have the muscle for smiling)
VO: How long do you intend to stay during the Visit to the states?
Me: Meeting is for DD & DD of June but my office policy requires a day’s rest before the meeting and before return travel for proper rest so I will stay a maximum of 6days. Arrive on Monday and return on Saturday.
VO: Typed for about a minute (I expected to hear : I am sorry, bla bla)
VO: (Not smiling) Your visa has been approved, this paper explains……
Me: (Straight face) Thank you. (but inside me, I was dancing a mixture of awilo, makossa, shoki and dabbing. Infact I was doing back flips). As Ieft I could see the expression of shock on the face of the guards and those on the queue.(Sorry to say but that VO na complete error)
So I went to meet wifey who was on the queue outside and gave her a quick coaching on how to answer the VO. I told her to ensure she passes the message of me and her not travelling together as it is key to the success if the interview.
I really thank God because if not for God, with that kind of VO, forget it.

My precedents:
1. My travel history is very solid, my former job had to do with international travel so I have been to atleast 5 countries on every continent except Australia. A globe trotter with an average of over 12 international travels annually.
2. My last US visa was for child birth and was declared at that interview. Although I had previous US visas meant for professionals.
3. I have had no international travel after my trip to USA.
4. I am well articulated and was very composed (This one means nothing to the VO although I suspect a stammerer may be misconstrued to be lieing or thinking of lieing).

I wrote my precedents so you may understand the background behind the approval.

The bolded ought to have brought a lot of relaxation to your mind after the 221g invite na, at least to a large extent.... Congrats on the success of your visa renewal! Waiting to read how your wife's own interview went too.
It is not as simple as that. A lot of things ran through my mind. Some of them even silly thoughts like was it because i paid and refused to do drop box for such a long time? Was it that my DS 160 form had some discrepancies with my last one?(i couldn't think of where i made a mistake). Was it because we didn't go to the USA after the child birth (but that the purpose of the visa was for child birth from the onset). I even regretted doing drop box together with my wife because generally, I don't have visa issues and this really threw me off balance.

Thanks to all the information on this thread and those on sister threads. I appreciate all contributors and information. God bless you all.
